My i7 940XM is about 1 year old and is still running strong even it constantly hits 90C due to high OC on all core :D.

Having a look on ebay for a PSU, as I plan to have a crack at 7970m upgrade over Christmas when I am visiting the States. Just upgraded the CPU to a 920xm so will definitely need the 240w. Will order soon and then have all the parts waiting for me. Would one like this do?

Original Genuine 240W AC Power Adapter Charger/Cord for Dell Alienware M17x | eBay

Also, do you have an example of a plug/cord that is suitable? Would rather not take apart my old one!

I presume you just split the adapter open, then switch the cords over, though I haven't done a mod like this before so a guide would be handy... hopefully someone will have one up by Christmas.

HELLO, I also bought a 7970M CLEVO with enduro disabled by the seller ...
I have not yet installed the card in my laptop because at this time I'll be away from home a month, because they are enlisted in the Navy ...
    I have an i7-940XM CPU and a power supply of 240w .....
Your problem may be the power supply ....

I highly doubt it would be a power supply issue since the card is not stressed at all at boot up (only 2D graphics) thus it should not demand much power from the battery/supply. I would venture that the vbios that was flashed on the clevo card may not have completely disabled enduro support and the laptop is trying to switch to an integrated GPU instead of the graphics card. Have you tried reflashing it (blind flash) with the vbios that is mentioned in this thread (I believe sosa has a version that works). Otherwise it may be a DOA card?

Hello ... you can have the VBIOS of sosa106? someone ... has it?
posted the VBIOS of sosa106 so that everyone can install ...
maybe also posted the method as flashing the VBIOS Czech ....
In November, when I come home I'll try to update with a 7970 m with enduro disabled by the seller.

I'd also be highly interested in doing this mod, due to the low cost of buying just the CPU (i'm thinking i7-940xm) + GPU + Power adapter vs a whole new computer. However, I have a few questions :
    - Is it fully functional ? When I read the topic about upgrading to a 6990M, there were quirks like no fan control and no HDMI video. So I wondered if there were such issues with this version of the mod.
    - What would be the recommended 7970M version / vBIOS ?
    - Is there a need to mod the GPU cooler also (mounting "fix", clipping the end of the radiator, putting smaller radiators on the memory chips ?)
    - Any specific way to adapt a 240W power adapter, or is there no better way than to get one, open it and solder the G73JH's power cord to it's insides?

Thanks in advance for your help,

Here's the vbios for the 7970m with enduro turned off. it's zipped so just unzip it and atiflash away. i've also included an autoexec.bat

As always, if something goes wrong, not held responsible for it. There's always risks when doing flashes. :)

Hello Hax .... this is what has flashed VBIOS Sosa106?
the AUTOEXEC.BAT file becomes simple flash czech?
Basically, it saves u most of the trouble in typing the commands in blindly. As soon as the DOS environment is loaded, just type in "flash.bat", hit enter and wait for your laptop to reboot automatically.

i have two vbios from different sources (one from sosa, one from another part of this forum), both have identical md5 hashes. fear not this vbios is identical to the one sosa used. that's why i have included the md5 hash for reference.

The Clevo 1 of eBay will not work strate away with are g73jh as they are co op bios as I like to call them they only switch the enduro off on a Clevo - sager laptops eg not disabled on the card itself just tells the motherboard not to use the hd 4000 on the CPU die though the motherboard

Ull have to use the bios that has the enduro support fully disabled as I had to and like sosa106 did.

Also princeblack please please message me again as I only got half of your message

One more. thing people I have got my i7 940xm in and its a beast I OCED it to 3525 mhz across all 4 cores max temp 92c won't do that again lol. Going to mod the CPU heatsink 2 me thinks n the OC the he'll out of it I want 4ghz per core lol

Any chance we can get some actual gaming results from running these beasts? If I may, I'd like to request a game. I know it may sound silly, but Combat Arms on max settings would be an interesting one for FPS. A friend of mine gets 150-300 FPS (Very map dependent.) on his G74. Where as I get roughly 45~ avg with max settings and a wavering 60 at medium settings.

    I just ordered a Clevo 7970m for my g73jh. I have a few questions.

Guys is it safe to use IC7? I read somewhere here that some users were against using IC7 because it would damage the card.
Can anyone direct me to a guide to flash the 7970m for my g73.

ICD7 leaves permanent scratches on the GPU die after about the 3rd repaste, only good for gpu with poor contact between the die and the heatsink.

please try this people i think ul like the results and its so easy to work with

right people here are 2 benchmarks devil may cry 4 and resident evil 5 will do more tomorrow as i will need to get downloading or i can just run the games and get software to record the fps most lightly the best idea

Well I will probably stay away from IC7 then all together.
How about just using just plain old Artic Silver 5? That work good enough?

Someone suggested that I get a 240w Alienware ac adapter because my 150w ac adapter will not be enough to power my laptop. I have the stock CPU, 720. He also suggested I need to mod the ac adapter. In what way do I need to mod it?

I see there are a few version of the alienware 240w ac adapter, does it matter which one I get? The amps are significantly higher then the stock ac adapter. Would that not hurt the system?

Well amps x volts =watts Lmao. So the answer to the question is no it won't hurt the laptop and to mod the PSU you will need to change the powercord that goes into the laptop simple to do will upload pics for you as its easy to do Ull need a soldering iron though all of the PSU from alienware are pretty much the same. bar where the power light is Lmao

I'll be a good sport lol glad your having a kick out of my questions. You have to understand though, I have been told, higher then recommended amps will damage components. I am not an electrical engineer but that's always been the rule of thumb I have been told. But I had to ask to be sure ;)

Yeah if you can upload a pic please, that would help a lot!

I went to Amazon, saw a few 240w alienware ac adapter, I was told flextronics had a high failure rate. I read pretty much most of the 6970m upgrade, originally I was going to do that but I bought the wrong kind video card ;/ So I just went with a 7970m.

Question, blind flash, does that mean doing what is sounds? Flashing without been able to see what your doing?

Sadly blind flashing dose mean what is says isn't that hard just horrible didn't enjoy it at all but that's what has to be done. As of the alienware PSU they only have so many failures due to the fact that the retards that are Dell are pretty much pushing the PSU to its limit on the m18x etc 2 Gpus, 2 hard drives , 4 sticks on ram , CPU motherboard , CPU fans , and people overclocking . the gpus alown pull a whopping 140w - 150w CPU is close to 30w ram pulls about 1.5w each from the PSU thats 186w without the fans or harddrives and motherboard you could probably add 10w for that so 200w without overclocking and overclocking is what pulls loads of watts who ever told you that higher amps on a PSU will damage the laptop is a TOOL . higher voltage will eg 21v + would go into detail but not much point it gets complicated lol laptop psus are only made to achieve a 85 - 90% load so a 240w PSU should ideally be max loaded at 215w now you see why they have so many so called failures people overload them it will last you years on the g73 max pull was 160w on my power pack on my bench but get the biggest PSU you can as it will be better for you laptop n the PSU and the laptops power regulating circuits as the power in to the laptop will be smoother again would go into detail but no point lol if you want me to explain please ask but rest easy as electronics are my thing my advice will NOT DAMAGE YOU LAPTOP WORKED WITH ELECTRONICS FOR ALMOST MY HOLE LIFE FROM THE AGE OF 5 MY FARTHER TOUGHT ME !! Hello Robtherob.. I have Problem with heatsink the VGA G73JH, FOR hd 7970m
    I bought the HD 7970m,.
How did you change the heatsink? How did you cool the chips?
How did you cool the RAM?
If you managed to complete this work, as you flashed the VBIOS?
have you experienced problems with instability caused by temperature or VBIOS?
    Can you help me?

    sorry for my bad English...

I don't have any extra heat pipes. Do I have to do it like this, can I just use how the original heatsink as is with the obvious modding that it needs done to it (cutting certain parts of it)? Or can I do what they did with the 6970 and add smaller heatsinks around the video card heatsink?

    hi there guys,

I´ve got an awesome G73SW-A1 for about a year now, and its getting outdated with the old gtx460m.

As i see lots of you upgrading your GPU's i was wandering if i can do this with mine too, change the GTX460M
and put the brand new HD7970M.

Is it possible?? do i have to make lot's of changes?? Can someone help me out??
I will do too the color mod on the keyboard, and will use USB Wifi and put msata drive on the pci-e slot (this is possible??)!!

I really apreciate for any help, i love my G73 and don't want to waste lots of money on a new note!!!!

From what I recall, the only successful GPU upgrade that was done on the G73SW was the installation of another ASUS Geforce GTX 560M. I believe the SW did not boot to windows with an AMD/ATi card.

Alright I know what to do now as far as needing a dell 240w ac adapter. I found the stock dell ac adapter but then I found this alternative 240w ac adapter that looks like its bigger, better ventilation, and doesn't seem like its been crammed in a tiny box.

What do you guys think of this??

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/AC-Adapter-...=Laptop_Adapters_Chargers&hash=item3a793c349d

As far as modding the heatsink, can I use the same mod as the 6970m and just attach smaller heatsinks?

So as far as a blind flash goes, does that mean I need to create a bootable usb, while running dos, type in the .bat and then what? If thats how I need to do it, how long would I need to wait after launching the .bat file?

Just ordered the PSU in preparation of this mod. Should be here this week. Also have a WTB thread for the 7970M. If I can't get it here, then I'll get a new one on eBay.

Do you think modifying it with another heatpipe is necessary?

Hmm i see, well with some bios modding it can work, or change something, i'm looking for someone who tried it... because if anyone can guarantee 100% that going for a better gpu works for sw (i dont mind nvidia or ati) i really want something stronger, and the GTX560m isn't thaaat strong in comparison!!

But thanks for the help :D

I'm going to think about it. I have everything I need sitting in my Amazon shopping cart. I plan on getting a spare gpu heat pipe like Rob did.

I got the one that was listed in the 6970 thread. I'll desolder my plug and attach it to the new one.

Hell if the laptop breaks I'll just get a new sager, but I hope it doesn't I love this little guy.

Hi guys, i was looking around and asking a lot of guys from here (by pm's) about the possibility of upgrading the SW too, but it seems that the upgrade in the SW isn't possible (till the moment), i was thinking it could be something in the bios (like capping or something)?? or the chipset (incompatibilites with the HM65)??

What your guys think about it??

The install might be a bit delayed.....have to wait and see what happens after that scammer played me for a fool.

Either way everything else is on its way. Guess it will just give me more time to get everything ready for the install. I plan on doing the same modification as rob did to the GPU heatsink. I might even purchase a second one so I can keep my orignal one. I plan on taking it to the mill at work and seeing if that will work.

    Card is ordered off eBay.

    WOOT!

Question, why was evgasr2 ban? He helped me quite a bit with this project, answered my questions, was very helpful. I was going to reply to a message when I notice he was banned.

Well luckily all the money that was taken has been returned. Evgsar2 is only 16 years old. He has a lot to learn.

Back on topic. Just got my shipping confirmation for the thermal pads, and the 5870 heatsink. I'm going to try and use the 7970M heatsinks that comes with the GPU. Otherwise I'll just order another 5870 one to rob from.
