Hi everyone,
I'm a new G73H owner too, and I'm having some serious problems with the thing locking up whenever it likes... I can't nail it down.
It's happened when I play games...
It's hard enough to get anything installed, since it likes locking up during installations as well... Games, programs, Firefox, you name it.
It also locks up when I try to copy/back up stuff onto it.
Yes, it locked up even when I copied the 8mb Firefox installer onto it... Sometimes, it locks up when I right click, or even just when I'm not doing anything with it
It also likes locking up when it loads W7, with the cursor in the middle of the screen.
Once, it locked up even before it hit Windows.
I'm quite noob, so I don't know what's going on! It just keeps locking up, sometimes I can still move the cursor, most times I can't, and the only way out is a hard reset.
I've tried uninstalling all the Creative stuff and installing the RealTek drivers, I've updated the BIOS from 2.09 to 2.11... I need more help.
Please, if anyone has any suggestions how I could troubleshoot this and hopefully solve it, I'd be much obliged. I really want to like this laptop!
Edit: I also don't get any BSOD or anything. The G73H just decides to stop doing anything, in the middle of copy/pasting or installing something or whatever, and that's it... no more responsiveness, no three fingered salute, no nothing... Just hard reset...

Did you try disabling the Soundblaster enchancements under sound devices? That is explained at the beginning of the threat.
Also, the first time I installed the new touchpad driver that is posted on the ASUS site I was locking up after several minutes of each reboot. After I uninstalled it, rebooted, then rebooted again and reinstalled it I was working fine. -
Lol, I removed all the Creative software (including Soundblaster stuff) when I read the opening post. It worked for a while, but I still lock up.
I haven't installed any touchpad software, so I don't think that's it either... -
Here it is Lock up solution -
Oh, cool... It sounds good Jeprira!
By the way, i read your earlier post about updating the Power4Gear... well, it wouldn't let me update, so I just got rid of it... and immediately, the laptop behaved MUCH better... instead of locking up every 3-10 minutes randomly, it locked up only when I tried installing Bioshock2, and it locked up at the "Updating DirectX" phase of the installation.
Hard reboot, tried again, and this time it worked. I tried playing for 5 minutes, it worked like a charm (so far)
I'll try your patch too, it looks very promising!
Very much thanks to you, but i dont forget Fadeus too -
also, the solution to creative is just to update to the latest realtek drivers. If you have any other problems, I have a huge list of goodies in my signature. -
I just tried to install the patch, it says "not applicable"...
So that's out
I'll try the things in your siggy next Xellon.
Thanks for all the help
Edit:
Ok, after a whole day of testing various things, I've got it to a point where it crashes a lot less, although it still misbehaves...
Here's what I did:
- update BIOS to 2.11
- uninstall Power4Gear
- disable all UAC, including from anti-virus software
I dunno if it matters, but i also install the latest physx driver for games
It's gone from randomly freezing/hanging/crashing at the drop of a hat to:
- taking it's sweeeeeeet time installing things... it would "hang up" over a point in an installation for +15 minutes, no progress bar movement, no blinking lights, nothing, THEN suddenly, when it feels like it, it wakes up and continues
- still crashes occasionally, but not so often... I'm hoping I'll be able to sort this out somehow, but I may have to live with this T_T
I've got some games on, and when they do work, dang, they're so beautiful... -
How could we turn off the Turbo boost up on Asus g73jh ? please show me
-
moonshiner1985 if you have the time id just reinstall the whole OS and just load the needed drivers without all the junk Asus preinstalls. There are a few threads on what to install, but if you decide to do it i can also list what you need here if you want.
vinh2910 there is no option to disable turbo boost in the G73JH Bios sadly. -
so, how about on windows ?
-
Will move to the G-series subforum and sticky it there.
Thanks -
Appreciate the sticky work coriolis- finally getting a bit more organized in here.
Vinh- are you talking about Intel's turbo boost or the ASUS one- if it's ASUS, you can just hit the button in the upper left that looks like a gauge. -
Quick question, how do you know which version your VGA drivers are? I updated to 10.8 (cleaned the old drivers). I just want to make sure my install was successful.

Great thanks. So is it recommended to upgrade to the new vBios if you do not get GSOD?
-
yessir
-
if it still crashes with testing it with one of each of your chips.
then do a surface scan of both of your hard drives.
this is only if you tried all the g73 fixes. -
Hey guys,
Another known issue, my new G73jh-a1 (2 days only) is freezing at the boot screen, it ALWAYS do it. I can do nothing, buttons don't work, i cannot even enter the BIOS setup.
I cannot upgrade the BIOS, i can do litterally nothing, and i'm in Brazil, but I bought it in US. . . that means I have no support here.
Is there any solution ? -
The warranty is global, so just take it to your local Asus service center...
Only thing i can think of is pressing the bios reset button (the little hole next to the access panel on the underside of the laptop) otherwise i dont think theres anything else you can do. -
Nice, I didn't know about the warranty. . . . Thanks
I tried to press it, but same thing happens.
It passed through the boot screen twice, on the second chance i booted into Live Ubuntu, with my USB Drive, and it worked fine, i could even use the hard drive and the files normally, but when I rebooted it, it's still freezing =P -
OP updated.
Ive added links to needed files and the simplest guides i could so you dont have to go to searching for them in other threads. -

Start regedit.exe. Go to
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Intelppm\
and
modify the start value from 3 to 4.
This disables that driver service. Reboot and notice your speed always to be 1,6 GHz or 1,73 GHz. -
So thats what Intelppm does...
Not really a good tweak for SSDs then, but i will add it to OP anyway, since its the simplest one if people prefer SSD speed over turbo boost. -
Alright, thought i m good with my asus g73jh but no. It decided to fk up.
this morning i wanted to turn it on and i was getting constant BSODs or startup freezes. I, then, unplugged and replugged the power cable. It could start afterwards but guess what, i simply couldn't enable wifi. What am i supposed to do? Help me please. Wifi would be really important for me. (FN+f2 does NOT work although every other function buttons do!) -
Try to reinstall ATK first, if that does not work try reinstalling the wireless card drivers.

It entails about 7 or 8 registry modifications and then setting those values in Power Options. One of them is disable core parking. I could write those all down here if you want. -
Please do so, youll save me some work
.
-
Any ideas? Thanks in advance. -
-
Make sure its not disabled in device manager too.
-
Device manager is not showing the card.
Edit how can i check what wireless card i'm having if i cant see it in device manager? -
Open up the back cover and look at it. Should be written on it or at least some part number from which you can find out.
It is possible it died and youll have to replace it... -
Sry i was blind.. my device manager is showing it: Atheros AR8131 (NDIS 6.20)
I have disabled and reenabled it. Nothing. I have deleted the driver from here, manually and reinstalled it. Nothing.
What am i supposed to do? -
Try uninstalling it from device manager and then reinstalling the driver, also windows update has a good upgraded driver that I used if you have not already installed it.
-
Nothing. Btw is the Atheros AR8131 (NDIS 6.20) a wireless controller? Since it says gigabit ethernet controller.
-
NM, Read you already did this. Hmm.
I didn't read the whole thread but are you up/did you do a fresh Win 7 format/install? -
After the BSODs and the problems? No, not yet. I'm going to do that next but unfortunately i can only do that when i am at home which means 4 days more.
edit: in network and sharing center in network connections i can only see lan but not wlan.. any thoughts? -
-
Hmm. Either it is dead/missing/loose or you have a issue inside the system. Have you tried going into safe mode and checking to see if there are any ghost drivers/devices in the device manager? (old school but worth a shot) if not a nice reformat/refresh can tell you if its hardware. If it is hardware then you can get a replacement Intel 6200 Wireless card off e-bay for around $20.
I had an issue similar to this with a Acer netbook a while back, the cards they came with had a bad batch. Either way a replacement Intel card made it run like a champ.
For the short time I did get to play with this it did seam to have the best range of any wireless card I have used. The thing was picking up networks 1000ft away. -
i suggest u try doing a clean reinstall or a system restore to factory settings.

My g73jh is finally arriving! In 4 more hours! After a gruelling 15 days wait!
And I really wanna ask other than flashing of bios, vbios, update of realtek drivers, usual windows updates, what do I still gotta do? Where do I download the latest power4gear utility? And do I have to uninstall the stock one or I can just install the latest one right away?
Out of curiosity, why can't we use an external harddrive to flash the vbios instead of a thumb drive?
Please be patient with a newb! -
Remove all the useless software that Asus installed. You only need power4gear if you intend to twin turbo, but in most games it has a negative effect since it somehow messes up turbo boost, so using setfsb is much better if you know how to do it.
You could theoretically use an external hard drive, but i dont see why youd want to format it as a boot device just for this (and FAT32 can only take 4GB if im not mistaken you need NTFS for larger ones, which isnt an option for creating a bootable drive the way described in the guides). -
Thanks for the prompt reply!
I really do wanna keep the turbo, so do I have to uninstall and install? Or can I just install over? Please advise! -
You can just download the latest and run the install.

Ok. I don't have to write the settings down anymore. I did what this guy did:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/har...ssd-performance-intel-series-5-jjb-tweak.html
WITH 1 ADDITION!!!
I also disabled core parking. Got me a little bit higher scores.
I'm still tweaking a little. -
I'm really curious to see just how much better these tweak are. So let's see some current numbers.
Mines fully loaded with the original factory image with all the bloatware still loaded. It's an Ocz vertex 120 gb. The only tweak is superfetch off.
I want to see how far behind my drive is. Thanks. -
There are CDM tests in the post he linked.
Will add the link to the OP PulsatingQuasar. -
Can someone please direct me to the latest power4gear download site? My G73JH just arrived but it's like 3am and i need to sleep
-
Its on the Asus Support Site.
-
sorry to keep bothering you with all these small matters, HellCry.. but I can't locate it from the Asus Website, I selected G73JH>Win7 64bit>Utilties...
