Did you ever do the vBIOS update?

No, I've only had my laptop for a couple of days, and I'm not even sure if I know how to. Only thing I've updated manually is the video card driver.
Edit: Just wanted to add that the grey vertically striped screens didn't result in a crash, they were just regularly popping on for a few seconds at a time. I freaked out and turned the game off. :p

You should do the BIOS to 211 and the vBIOS update from Chasity. I had same issues as you before doing that.

The vBIOS update addresses this very problem with newer drivers from AMD. Just follow the instructions. It's real easy once you have a bootable flash drive.

Checked my system information, and as far as I can understand, my BIOS version is already 211. (American Megatrends Inc. G73Jh.211, 27.07.2010).

I guess this means that I can safely skip that step, and get right on following the instructions in the op?

Never done anything like this before, and I'm terrified that something might go wrong.

Yep, continue on. Its really simple honestly. The hardest part for me was making a bootable USB drive, which seems like it should be the easiest part. I had to do a full format and then make it bootable. PITA. But the actual flash was quick and painless and went exactly as explained.

Yeah and the DOS files were hidden on mine so I wasn't sure it did anything but it booted correctly.

Same here. Also make sure you use the ESC menu to boot from it because going into the BIOS to add the USB as a the primary boot drive didn't work so well for me. The ESC method is pretty fool proof tho.

    Hey guys!

    First post.

This is not a problem really. I just wanted to ask, if someone can be kind enough to point me to the thread where a step by step guide has been given to change the color of the backlight of the keyboard to red, green etc.

I was on youtube. The guy from Gen Tech PC has posted that he has put a guide here.

    Thanks for the help.

Looks very cool. I hope it's just a software thing ....

No. There is a guide. That is not the guide. It just shows how it looks. I just came from that video to this forum to see if there was a guide.

    EDIT:
Hey GamerzXtreme, it is not a software thing. It is a hardware thing. Done with colored cellophane paper, I think.

The youtube video you posted (and then removed) just gives the end result.

I posted a modification to TouchFreeze in another thread. If you use my DLL instead of the original TouchFreeze DLL, the software also ignores mouse scroll events in addition to mouse click events. It's a big help for people using the standard MS mouse driver because the Synaptics driver screws up their keyboard.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...043-keyboard-lag-debugging-3.html#post6728328

I'm not trying to cross post. I just realized this was probably the right place to post a workaround instead of where I originally posted.

    Hi all.
Awesome list of issues and solutions in the first post.

I seem to be experiencing the GPU overheating issue. It's been like 4 months since I bought the G73 and I'm more than pleased with it. It's just this last week that problems started to show up.

I could hear the fan (right side from the front, I believe it's the GPU side, right?) louder than usual, but I did not paid much attention to it. But then last weekend I played a couple games, and all of a sudden, instant shut down in the middle of the action. I happened with PES 2010. Then I experienced the same issue on GRID.

I looked online, everything started pointing to the thermal paste in the GPU. I downloaded CPUID Hardware Monitor, and confirmed that the GPU is at 66C right after booting up, goes up to 75C-80C while browsing the web or working on programs, and shoots up to 95C-105C while gaming. I assume at some point the GPU gets above that and shuts the PC down to prevent damage.

Now, since I relocated to Argentina since I got the G73, RMA is pretty much out of the question (shipping rates would be astronimical, plus customs issues I'm sure....) I think I need to take the other route, of repasting myself.

Has somebody already done this, and can share some tips with me, and most of all, boost my confidence before opening it up (I've never opened a notebook before...)? I was considering sending it to a local IT guy, but I'm scared they mess it up even worse...

Also, would it be any other reasons the GPU heats up like this? What would be normal operating temps?

    Thank you all in advance!

Chastity has a very good repaste thread. Several of us repasters have posted in there. There are actually three threads that I can think of. There is disassembly thread that has some or all of the service manual posted. The thing I used to do my repaste was the BTOTech video.

I'm not trying to be rude... I'm too lazy to search up the threads :), but do a few searches and you'll find some good threads. The video I linked is invaluable.

Go slow and be patient. Be slow and careful peeling up the keyboard and it will be fine. The other thing to be careful with is the speaker cable. It is tight and delicate. Pry it gently from both sides several times until it lifts out of the socket. Don't put needle nose pliers on it and try to pull it out or you will break it.

Still having trouble with my computer locking up here. If a big program freezes I cant close it and especially if its a full screen application trying to bring up the task manager when pressing ctrl+alt+del locks up the computer and I have to do a forced shut down (Holding the power button). Also if I leave it on to download over night I usually wake up to the display turned off, which its supposed to do after an hour, but the computer is locked up, the screen wont turn on and the light at the front doesn't flash to say its thinking.

Also I uninstalled the audio driver.. I forget the name, I think it begins with an R though. I thought it wasn't doing anything important but that sure f*@#$d up. >_>
Any ideas how I can get it back or reinstall it?

    Thanks for your help.

Im sorry to say that going from your description we cant really say whats wrong with your laptop, but it sounds like your windows install got messed up by drivers/software. Your best bet is to format and do a fresh windows install (theres a nice thread telling you which apps you need and which are useless so you dont install bloatware that might slow your laptop down or cause unnecessary problems, just search for it).
Before that you can try updating (or downgrading) the video drivers to 10.7a which seam the most stable, realtek drivers to 2.52 and installing the windows 7 freezing hotfix if you havent done all that already.

Thanks for that, got my speakers working again thanks to the driver thread. How would I backup windows to disk though, using the AI recovery burner? I've always had a disk before so I've no idea where to start with this.

    Hello everyone!

I have an Asus g73jh and Im suffering from the following problem under W7 64 bit

Every time I leave the Firefox 3.6.10 open for a long times in crashes whenever I use a Fx function such as muting the computer (Fn+ F10) and sometimes it crashes by itself with no Fn pressings

Funnily enough that doesn't happen with the Firefox 4 beta 6

    any insight on the problem??

    thank yo very much!

Thats more of a firefox related problem, not really a G73 related one...
Perhaps your previous install got messed up. Im using 3.6.10 and i have no problems with it.

It is a firefox problem..google chrome is the way to go.
Option B: would be to reinstall firefox.

question about the GSOD....I just updated the driver for ccc to 10.8 but have not flashed the bios or vbios..should I do it soon or wait and see if i get the gsod?

I use Firefox 3.6.10. I use Firefox exclusively and I don't have that issue. I have had Firefox get slow and weird over the last few months at different times causing me to clear history/cookies/etc.

It could be one of your addons. Are you using Personas, Firefox sync, ad-blocker, or anything like that? Those can cause problems such as what you describe.

One of your add-ons is probably causing a memory leak and being naughty. Update them or remove the offender.

Just did the vBIOS-thingie, and so far results seem positive. Will try more games in the next few days, just to be sure.
Thanks to everyone for helping me out. You were all correct, once I'd managed to create the bootable USB drive, the rest was child's play. Surprisingly easy. Let's hope that's the end of all my GSOD-troubles.

i have some new kind of problem:
every time i plug in my subwoofer cable or a ms pro duo/sd card/etc the "windows explorer has stopped working" message appears.
windows restarts very fast but it's annoying.

EDIT: problem solved. typing 'Sfc /scannow' in cmd helped me to get rid of the problem.

I'm not following the second part of your comment. You got a line through your screen similar to PSOD, I think. Psychedelic Screen of Death. The way I have seen this here is at least half the scree has crazy colors and the other half has something different. That is a bad LCD. That is what Asus replaces when you RMA.

If you had one line and you could put a window over it and the window "erased" the line, then that is a software thing. If the line wouldn't go away until reboot, it may be the beginnings of PSOD. Others reported that their screen would "glitch" like that every once in a while before it completely crapped out. :( Hopefully it was a one time thing.

Start googling the crash information. Dump the crash information as well, use the MS analyser (forget the exact name).

It's likely a software incompatibility - game cracks, antivirus acting up, driver update that was corrupted ...

    Hello Ladies and Gents.

I recently received a G73jh A1 as retirement gift from an old friend. To say i am not a computer savvy is an understatement.

I was hoping if someone would be kind enough to direct me a user friendly guide that instructs me on how to:

    1. Update my drivers
    2. Backup my system ( I have used my PC for the last four days and yet have to back it up. Is this bad and how much trouble am I in)?

Last, the only thing i have done on this PC is surf the internet and play Civ 5 (to my disappoint at a low setting, since changing to higher setting does seem to make a difference). But my god, this laptop is fast.

I think i have ask too much questions to the point of being impolite. Thanks for you help.

1). The normal default drivers should be fine in general. The only one you may want to update is the HD5870 drivers.
    - Go to control panel
    - Open Programs and Features
    - Click on ATi Catalyst Installer. When it runs just choose express uninstall.
    - Download: https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/920...mobile/10-8_mobility_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc.exe
    - Install

    2. Backing up your system would just be backing up your important files. You can do that by transfering files onto a CD/DVD, Flash USB drive or external drive. A lot of external drives now come with software to do system backups.
    - Or you can find software to create disk images. These software will make an "image" of your harddrive so if something happens, you can reinstall everything as your harddive was before. Acronis True Image is the most popular one I know of, it's not free though.
    - Also there is a hidden partition on your HDD by default from Asus that allows you to do repairs if something happens to Windows. I am not entirely sure how that works since I deleted mine.

Personally I just back things up on DVD and external drives.

Thank You ziddy123, The Hidden Partition concept seems very interesting, I will look into it :) .

One more question before we part ways. When i started my laptop, i makes this weird "durd" noise for five second before it runs silently. I have been ignoring for sometime now, just wandering if this is unusual.
