I'll post this here, as I can't seem to get an answer any other place. I've heard that the minijack out on the g73jh is in fact an optical port, is this true? If so, what kind of optical cable do I plug into the minijack port? Should I use a so-called toslink - miniplug cable? The reason I'm asking this question is that I'm looking at the Tritton ax pro headset, and I want to use it with both my ps3 and my g73. And as far as I can see the optical route would be the only possible way to go with the g73. Thanks for all the help! :)

There is a thread about it. Search a bit and you'll find.
From my recollections, it is indeed an optical port.

    This is what you need...

Amazon.com: Toslink To Optical Mini Adapter: Electronics

Or this if you want a cable plus adapter all in one...

afaik this is a known bug with the catalyst driver. have u tried installing the whole software suit in one package and not just the driver itself? when i upgraded yesterday, this helped me.

what im talking about is the first option from this list:

    http://support.amd.com/de/gpudownload/windows/Pages/radeonmob_win7-64.aspx

plz note that this was the correct driver for me, it might not be the correct one for your machine.

Hey guys. I recently purchased a G73JH-RBBX05 which came with the 209 BIOS. Unfortunately, it randomly powers-off roughly twice a day, regardless of usage.

I've been watching my temps, and it does not appear that it is overheating.

When I check the event viewer after each shutdown, three items tend to appear:

    1. Kernel-Power (Event ID 41) (63)

    2. HECIx64 (Event ID 3) "Intel(R) Management Engine Interface driver has failed to perform handshake with the Firmware."

    3. ACPI (Event ID 10) "ACPI BIOS is attempting to write to an illegal PCI Operation Region (0x4)" (This last one appears irregularly)

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Do a full uninstall of all things ATI. Reboot, and then do a custom install of the ATI drivers ONLY. Reboot, and then install CCC, and other apps.

This helps often when the drivers / OS gets pesky.

guys i need help, when m playing mw2 or any other game my g73jh-a2 sometimes gives me BLACK (BSOD) the sound works for 30 secs or so but the screen just goes black and after 30 secs the sound just keep repeating itself and then i cant do anything besides force shutdown. M sure its not overheating issue as the temperatures on max is 85C (just got repasted from RMA). I dont have any drivers from Creative, I have bios211, i have done everything except updating my Vbios. Do u think that will solve my problem? oR do u think my Video card is becoming faulty? Should I Send it to RMA or try new vbios? I have realtek old version do u think, that is causing this problem?
    Thank you

I would most definitely try playing games with an updated vBIOS and 10.8 Catalyst before RMA. No sense in going through the hassle of an RMA without at least trying a vBIOS update. If it goes wrong, you haven't lost anything because you were going to RMA anyway.

It will not. If you are worried about it... assuming you brick it, which you won't... ;) all you have to say is my laptop won't boot. The screen won't come on. They will troubleshoot it with you for five minutes and issue an RMA number. You'll get it back with a new GPU.

Today I got the exact same problem with my A1: last night I was playing Assassin's Creed 2, Dragon Age and Supreme Commander 2 with no problems for about 3 hours. Then today when playing AC 2 for about 20 minutes I got the VSOD, the after that any game would show the exact black screen described above with the sound thing. DA started showing some graphical artifacts after 5 minutes of play, which would be carried to the desktop when I exited the game.

I'm going to try the BIOS and vBIOS reflash, along with a clean install. Any advice on how to perform the clean install and which drivers download? Thanks.

No need for a clean install, unless you are doing it for other reasons. Just update the BIOS to 209 or later, vBIOS to the updated one, and finally your video drivers.

Can someone help me please? I created the bootable drive and all set to flash the new vBios, but I can't figure out
how to get the 93vBIOS.rar file to extract the atiflash.exe, BR3852.001, and Vflash.bat files. Or is that how it's done? I'm terribly confused.

You need a utility like 7zip to extract the rar file. 7zip is free. rar is just like zip files if you are familiar with those. It's just a compressed archive.

    Hey all,
My Asus G73JH power brick just stopped working; there appears to be a small grove etched into the base of the metal part of the plug that inserts into the computer, and the wire that runs from the computer to the brick appears to be a little loose at the brick end. No idea what's causing the failure, but I just tried to move the laptop and the power wire caught on something and then the power stopped.

As this seems unsalvageable, can you recommend a new brick for me to purchase? I haven't been able to find the one it came with on Newegg. Thanks!

EDIT: I saw someone link this on the forums:
    http://www.centrix-intl.com/details.asp?productid=9572

Does this seem like a viable alternative charger for the G73JH, and is this a reliable website? Thanks!

    The G73JH charger specs are:
    Input-100-240 V~2.0A
    Output- 19.5v ~7.7A

You can pickup a generic kit (ie Targus), it's more important to make sure you get one that can support between 150w (the standard asus brick is 150) and 180w (better). So yes, the one you linked is just fine.

Did you try turning off DEP for regsvr32.exe? (I wouldn't advise it, but it seems to be the old common "fix")

I would find the offending installer/auto-updater (could be malware!) and eliminate it!

Thanks for the reply Chastity, last night I did this, no problems were encountered with any of the reflashes, turned out I had BIOS v206 vBIOS 26 or something (its now on 30 or something, dont remember exactly :p). Uninstalled my video drivers and used clean sweep in safe mode to wipe any remaining dlls, then reinstalled ATI Catalysis 10.8.

I played AC 2 for about 40 minutes and SupComm2 for 20 mins with no problems, however this didn't solved my previous problem with the OpenGL games of KotOR or Scratches, the latter still gives me the Blue Screen of Death when I try to launch it (I still have the memory dump file of it), KotOR is... odd: Sometimes by pressing Esc in the Lucasarts logo it takes me to the main menu with no sound playing and unable to click any option, then I have to use the task manager to close the game, sometimes doing the same thing will take me back to desktop with the game minimized in the taskbar and unable to click it back; leaving the intro running its course without pressing anything always takes me to the desktop, and very ocasionally pressing esc in the intro takes me to the Bioware logo and then to the main menu with no problems.

    Why is this?

I've heard about KOTOR and ATI having issues with recent drivers. I haven't tried it out yet, but I would think that it's possible that running it in emulation mode may offer some benefits. (Perhaps XP mode. Pro Users have that full XP Virtual Box emulation capacity.)

I bought the game on sale a few months ago but I haven't played it, yet. I just fired it up to see if there are problems. Of course I only spent a few minutes with it. It launches just fine. The graphical options only allow fairly low resolution 1024X768 or one notch higher so it doesn't take up the whole screen.

It looks good and seems to run fine. I have the steam version. Perhaps there is an issue with the patch level he has or something like that? If it's a retail disk copy it may need an update.

There may be a way to get it to run at native resolution. I haven't investigated that yet.

You can punch in resolutions by editing the .ini file. I remember doing that to get Widescreen support. WSG.com I believe has a tool for this.

I have the Steam version too (in fact I think I bought it in the same sale Jody did for the price of $5.00), like I said very ocasionally it does load fine and Im able to play it at 1028 x 1024, videos are displayed in a small window on the screen, I am wondering, are you using Alchemy on it?

As I heard of, the solution mentioned by Chastity works only with the retail version of it, since the Steam executable is encrypted.

Edit: BTW the game Trilby's Notes (found for free here) displays a weird color scheme when played in fullscreen, this doesn't happen to me in windowed (640 x 480) mode, which is odd since it has very old-school graphics. (Yeah, I'm a retro gamer too :b)

OK. Thank you for the information. I will poke around a bit and make sure when I start playing it. I'm just finishing up a run through of Torchlight right now and it's awesome. Maybe KoTOR is next. I've got a backlog of probably fifteen games to play when I have time which I don't.

I just wanted to let you know that it works fine on a G73 so there must be something wrong with your drivers. You should be able to play it. I will sit down and spend some time actually playing the game. If it messes up like yours, I will most definitely post back or PM you.

Doe anyone remember the thread from a day or two ago where the user was reporting that you lose a speed bin on Intel Turbo Boost if you enable VM support in BIOS? I wanted to respond and I don't remember what thread that was.

Anyway I screwed up my virtual machine that I use for work. I had to restore it from a ghost backup image today. Ghost Explorer is a single threaded piece of junk. It took forever and banged out at 100% on one core the whole time. My machine ran one thread the whole morning. It mostly stayed at 2.66GHz but it occasionally jumped to 2.8GHz so that is definitely not true. Disabling VM support in BIOS does will not gain you a speed bin because you never lost one to start with.

On a positive note I did repaste my GPU with ICD7 like many of you did. I did not repaste the CPU because I didn't want to tear the sticker. With one thread running 100% for hours my CPU never exceeded 70C so I think that is very good. Either they use a different paste for the CPU or the paste on my CPU was applied much better than it was on the GPU. :)

Well.. I've updated to bios 211 and Chastity's version of the vbios along with Catalyst 10.8. Still having problems with random freezes which occur only when I'm running Windows 7. Ubuntu works perfectly without issues. The freezes are unique in that they are accompanied with a harsh droning sound. I am running a clean installation of Windows and have installed the freezing hotfix. No creative drivers installed. I'm debating sending this in for rma.

Uninstall 10.8 and all things ATI and try 10.7a Hotfix.

Or you can uninstall everything ATI, then do a driver only install of 10.8. Then do the CCC and other items. The installer I find can be flaky.

    Hey guys,

I got the new charger and it works great. My only concern is that the keyboard LEDs do not appear to be functioning, on power or on battery. When I hit the Function + F3 or F4 there is no on-screen popup saying I've changed the LED brightness, and the keyboard won't turn on. Can anyone help? Thanks!

EDIT: I looked at the threads on keyboard failure after flashing BIOS and things like that, and I have done none of that. All that happened was the keyboard was working fine, my charger got stretched and broke while in the computer, I got a new Targus charger, and now the keyboard won't turn on. It was functioning fine before the charger incident.

Any ideas as to why, and if not, would this be covered under the 2-year limited warranty if I have to send it in?

If there is no on-screen popup, it could be that your ATK package is screwed up. I would uninstall ATK and install the latest version from Asus support site. Even if the lights don't work the popup should work. Do you see the popup for other function key combinations?

Without a properly working ATK software package, the keyboard backlighting does not work.

There are the popups for everything else, yes. What exactly is ATK? Sorry to bother you, I just don't want to screw around with stuff I don't know about lol, and I don't know what it is or how to install/uninstall it.

Also, the screen feels a little dimmer on the new charger than it used to be; is that actually a possibility, or is that just me seeing things? Brightness is on at max at the moment.

    Thanks for the help!

If you are getting the blue pop-up icons for the other functions like brightness and volume then I don't think ATK is your problem. ATK is a driver that is loaded on your laptop. It operates the special function keys. If the keyboard light icons don't display but the others do, it probably isn't the ATK driver that is causing the problem. I'm thinking that if you don't even get the icon, the keyboard is not passing the key presses to the operating system. You may have some sort of electrical problem going on.

I'm not sure how jarring this power cord stretching incident was but it sounds like it caused some damage to your machine. You should be able to send it in for warranty repair. I wouldn't mention the power cord thing, though. I would just tell them what isn't working and ask for help. Let them run through their troubleshooting steps and if it isn't resolved they will issue an RMA number. I don't believe that you are even asked to send the power supply with the laptop when you RMA. All they need is the laptop itself. That is what I was told.

I have in the last couple of days experienced 5-6 of these freezes, exactly as you describe it. I also have the 211 bios, updated vbios and 10.7a drivers. Just installed the hotfix and I'm downloading creative drivers right now. Hope this solves it.

I find it odd that I have only recently stated experiencing this, and the frequency of the crashes make me suspect that it must be something I've done recently. But I've been running with all the aforementioned updates for around 1 month now without any problems.

Will let you know if I stop experiencing it after freeze hotfix and creative drivers.

For those of you still dealing with StarCraft II freeze ups and/or GSOD issues, I offer the following:

My G73 was freezing during SC2 with a black screen. I also had one GSOD after downloading the more recent CCC ATI driver and all Windows updates. So, I did a system restore of Windows and disabled Windows updates and kept the default ATI driver. I have been playing SC2 now for two days with no issues.

Conclusion: The GSOD and black screen freeze up during game play does not at all seem to be hardware failure. Some people have suggested it's a conflict between one of the Windows updates and a newer ATI driver. It's lame that we can't feel safe updating Windows but my system is running great. Hopefully ATI can figure this out and get a solution to us soon.

Are you saying you think that using windows restore point would return a bios to a earlier one? Very odd as I have never heard of that. But for what seems to be best on the g73jh is bios 211 with the unoffical vbios 93 with or with out OC and ati driver 10.8 there is alot of helpful walk throughs for all these on this forum.

Did it do that before? If it didn't perhaps it is a motherboard issue. Did your motherboard get replaced?

I created my bootable USB on my desktop PC so yes.

Close any opened window that show the contents of the USB, I got that too.
