What's the GPU clock setting in Jx? nVidia factory? OC'd? or underclocked like J?
-
havent known yet but i guess its the nVidia stock clock with TDP about 50W
-
Hope that further test results available will prove that it is indeed better than the G51J-A1!
-
550/1375/950. ill do one more on asus clocks this afternoon.
-
Someone made an unboxing but I think they have the older version not the x??

Someone make an unboxing video. I want to see this beast. -
3D vision version::
ASUS G51JX-3D -
Does the 3D version have a 1080p screen? Or is it still the crap 1366x768?
-
Justin@XoticPC Company Representative
The 3D is only 1366x768.
-
Yeah, I just saw that this morning too! Assuming they didn't remove RAM slots or something, it's basically $150 cheaper and just dropped one mis-matched DIMM, plus the backpack and stuff. Pretty tempting except for the resolution (and of course I'd rather have Blu Ray built in, but I'm doing okay with external right now if I have to).
I noticed Amazon has a G51Jx-X3 listed today too. It's $1200, and swaps the 1.6GHz i7 for a 2.26GHz i5...so for the price difference of only $100, that's not worth it. It's max turbo mode speed is actually less than the i7's! Still, it's cool to see more options.
The lame thing continues to be that Intel's not making 32nm QUAD Nehalam chips. THOSE can benefit most from the smaller die process. These ones they are...ugh. Dual core with integrated video that's probably blowing some power even in systems that won't/can't use it, and much worse memory performance because they moved the memory controller off the CPU again. Still, at least they're better replacements for the Core 2s, it's just sad to think what COULD be right now.
Nice! Thanks so much for that link! I'd guess Best Buy will carry it? It looks like EXACTLY what I want (aside from the lack of Blu Ray at least). Slightly larger screen and much more reasonable resolution, with everything else basically the same.
Darn it, now I'm going to be even more frantically refreshing Best Buy's page :-D (Click, click, click
)
Technically, but it looks much worse. You wouldn't actually want to use it like that at the Windows desktop. You can also play around with DPI settings. In the past lots of things don't display right like that, but supposedly 7 does a more advanced job of it. Still, that would be a HUGE pain for me too. Even if I could find a setting that would make that crazy resolution usable, unless 7 stores DPI/etc. adjustments SEPARATELY per display, I would have to change those settings twice EVERY SINGLE DAY when I hook it up to my external monitor. Just a total pain to deal with.
The cheapest I've seen so far is the one I mentioned above-the G51Jx-X3, which swaps the quad i7 for a dual i5 for $1200 instead of $1300. Worse deal IMO, but still a better CPU than what that G60 has.
BUT from the info brochiller posted, I'm guessing that G60 update may have some less expensive models too. There could be something closer to $1000 at Best Buy or the like, although that $900 model was discounted at least $100 (maybe $300?)
I'd guess the GTS 360 uses less power, and the i5 CPUs that will probably be used in the lower end G60s will use less power too, so that's another nice bonus. -
They should really do away with this lid. Its not so appealing to me as the older white one was for some reason.
Wonder if they fixed the cooling issue on this refresh. -
I know, I really liked the white lids to, but you can't have everything I guess.
As for the cooling, people are expecting the GTS 360m to run cooler than the GTX 260m, but we'll have to wait and see for sure. Shouldn't be long now though since retailers have them in.
-
I think thats' because the core speed of the GTS360M is a bit lower than the GTX260 M
I really like the notebook but at first i could'nt choose between the asus G51JX and the alienware M15x reconfigured to match the specs of the asus.
But now i've seen the benchmarks on the GTS360M, I really want the asus.
Just waiting for a second confimartion
-
I just called Newegg about Item #N82E16834220700 and the model they have (G51JX-X1) does not come with a backpack or mouse.
-
Any idea how short supply the initial units are? I'm hoping they last long enough for me to order on Friday when our tax return arrives... {edit} this computer is really dying. :\
-
Justin@XoticPC Company Representative
At this time there is plenty of stock available.
You can always order from your preferred seller ASAP and they can delay processing payment until Friday, that is no issue with us anyway.
-
@Justin: What is the stock wireless radio in this machine? Is it something like Atheros or Broadcom, or is it just a lower-model Intel?
-
Justin@XoticPC Company Representative
In the last G51J it was a Intel 1000 Wireless. I believe this new model it is the same, but will have to confirm.
-
all stock (except windows),
http://service.futuremark.com/home.action?resultId=1855671&resultType=19
3dmark vantage trial. win7 will be getting replaced by ubuntu 10.04 A2 (or nightly), so hopefully i'll be seeing some 3dmark06 and game results. -
Hi, sry for my english.
Have this model problem with BSOD like G51j and problem with throttling like my XPS 16 with i7 CPU? A have one piece in box in my work. I thinking about selling my XPS 16 and changing him for this ASUS.
thx -
We don't know yet - we only have one benchmark number and very little info for this system at the moment. It may be that it shares the same or a very similar BIOS as with the G51J and has that same fix, or it could come back to haunt us. It depends what nVidia/ASUS consider ready for sale to be. If you want that info, you need to wait for some more thorough tests.
I want to hear good things about the JX as much as anyone else, but if it isn't perfect I'd rather know that now than later... Of course we can find fixes and tweaks over time, but good to know what we have to start from please
Peter -
The BSOD problems were apparently just fixed a week or two ago on that previous model, so this one's probably pretty darned safe. I don't think anyone has it yet though.
It's definitely a better system than the Studio XPS 16 though IMO. -
Throttling is a question, but I'm leaning towards no throttling. If it's true GTS power consumption is 50w (compared to GTX260M 75w), then there should be less to no throttling issue.
-
Benchmark with turbo mode off:
-
4 ROPs lolz... at least the clocks look accurate (and the name). seems that it's under spec, right at the gts260m level. synthetic performance looks right on for our first predictions. now to see if it can hold the equivalent of a 500 -> 600MHz oc
edit: 600 is as high as i can go, both clock and edge-of-throttling wise (screen at 10/15 just in case).
+1 -
Wuhuu You're the best!!!
GTS 250m had 4371 points from Vantage, what do you think?? Worst than GTX 260m?? And will you try 3dMark06 too?? And how turbo mode effect to results?
-
Interesting, Turbo Mode being off brought the CPU score up nearly 1500 points - GPU score went down about 80 or so
2 hours 40 minutes - sounds great
Thanks for posting this, more, more
Peter -
So, Is it good or bad??
-
if you saw my results a few posts above, it's the same as a gtx260m with asus clocks. from those i can oc 20% to 600MHz.
-
Yess,i checked your previous post now. You mean oc'ing gtx260m or gts360m? . Do you know if asus software will let us to oc GPU?? Like at G73j, twin turbo feature??
-
It's Atheros:
And G51Jx has 3 antenna wires:
-
the stock config from asus. probably no twin turbo.
edit for confusion: gtx260m -
I've been searching around to try to find direct comparisons with the G51J-A1 doing the same tests including the Battery Life one - but I haven't been able to find it. It would be good to have a baseline to know the differences between the two apples to apples.
Does anyone know where such releases can be found? I have different types of tests and under overclock and so on, but not the same - like a battery life reading on 'Reader Mode' for example. Since a lot of these benches are screen shots it's really hard to search for them...
Thanks,
Peter -
Temperature while playing Crysis demo:
-
Mmh 79 C...is not much different from the 85-89 C of the 260m GTX...however is better
What is the FPS number of Crysis in ultra-high details?? *_* -
Thank you!
-
Were you playing at very high settings??
-
At 1280X960 all settings high and AA off.
-
How is that the high setting? The Jx is supposed to do 1080 ?
-
... High settings as in he set the graphic options such as shadows textures high.
-
Cool then...what about if anti-aliasing was turned on?
-
..…… aa was off.
-
It was off - I think he was asking what if it were on.
-
Oh. I was gonna say.
If AA was on it would decrease the fps, around maybe 5? -
Thats what I figured... but I am curious about temperatures. what will they be when the gpu is pushed harder? Like a game set at 1920x1080 AA on...basically using everything this box has got..
I'm hoping it will be better than th J..
Just got my email ..mine ships out tomorrow!!! Cant wait! -
The number in the corner the framerate? Or something else?
Everyone throws Crysis Warhead around a lot... is that the defacto high-end title to test with now? The main title I'm buying this thing for right now is Dragon Age, though I intend to throw TOR on when it comes out. -
cooler, maybe. better, maybe not. a 20% oc on a gtx260 is 25% on the gts360 (based on cores). performance is around the same in synthetics on asus factory clocks, games hopefully coming soon. when i see something to compare to, ill try and get that title off a friend (books and university rob you dry
)
should handle DAO native/maxed with maybe 2 or 4xAA. i still prefer crysis, but warhead and farcry 2 seem more popular now. -
Alright, I picked up my G51JX-A1 at a local shop on a price match for ~$1487 US + tax - headed home now with the box in my hand. Planning to test it out and write a short review tonight and fill it in over the next few days.
Peter -
ZOMG! Look at what I was posting as I got an e-mail that there was a new reply to this thread:
-------- snip --------
So these are in stock, but no one has one in their hands yet but ASUS suppliers?
I guess it doesn't help that everyone looking for this kind of laptop already bought the G51J-A1.
No one is waiting on their shipment, though?
-------- snip --------
LOL! -
Temperature with Crysis @1600x1024, 8X AA all settings at very high:
-
The CPU cores are a smidge higher but still I'd say within respectable limits. How long was it running before those measurements were taken?
Asus G51Jx-A1 w/ GTS 360m (GDDR5), now available for pre-sales!
