I do have the benchmarks tested with Sager NP8690, 460M with GDDR5 should perform little bit better than GDDR3:

it doesn't make any sense, how come the laptop with the same GPU and better CPU get much lower scores ?
And thanks Gentech for the info -
They are of different settings? They do have the links to the source where they get the data from, and the settings are explained more in detail in the source, for eg, the XMG7.c's 117.5 FPS is because it's ran in 1280x1024 resolution rather than the native full HD resolution.

So.. were disappointed, Right?
-
I am not sure, notebookcheck.com sometimes has strange numbers. GTX480M for example, on notebookcheck.com it shows GPU-Z of 480M's spec is GPU: 425MHz and VRAM 600MHz:
Notebookcheck: Review NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480M "Fermi" in the Clevo D901F
But on nVidia's official specs it says the 480M clock speed is GPU 850Mhz and GDDR5 1200Mhz:

just wondering, the G51JX with 3D had a built in emitter... right?
so pretty much, you could use 3D with the laptop, but you would be technically unable to use it with a desktop too...? -
Huh???
Can you rephrase the question because you lost me.
Pretty sure you need a 120Ghz screen for 3D if that's what your asking. -
Desktop 3D Vision Package = Shutter Glasses + Emitter
just wondering how that's suppose to work from a laptop. from some random source, I read that the G51JX has the emitter integrated onto it, so if it's integrated, you can't just rip it off and put it on a 3D-Vision capable PC. -
Any info about switchable graphics or Optimus?
-
It comes with i7-720QM so no, unless the mainboard can support i7-620 dual core or i5 and i3 CPU.
-
Thanks for that. O, I nearly forgot, whats the audio gonna be like 2.1 set up like in the G73?
-
I thought it will come with 740QM since it will be released soon and cost the same price (HP or Dell got them already i believe)
-
I just hope it's no PITA to change the CPU like it's bigger brother the G73.
-
The only difference is the GPU, without any design change, so I doubt they will put the CPU slot underneath.
-
Well its a dual cooler, new chassis.... style seems to be very similar to the G73, so i would guess it might also be similar inside... then again its gonna be hard to maintain dual hardrives + a reference card on 15'' chasis.... so who knows. Then the G51 was a lot different from the G71, and the refresh mantain the style, so we might more of the old.
-
Not sure if 15.6" will have subwoofer like G73, but hopefully it'll have Bang & Olufsen speakers just like N53JQ and N73JQ.
740QM is not confirmed and most newer upcoming models with Core i7 are still 720QM so we don't know till received more detail specs. -
It's real and already available in HP website (i just checked) available for the envy laptops
Also all of the new cpus already benchmarked Google Translate
-
Great point.
While they look the same they hopefully are setup slightly different for easier access.
I'm just shooting easy upgradability. -
any chance either the new g53 or g73jw will have better battery life than the current models?
-
Yes I know but on Asus price list that new models with i7 CPU still saying it's 720QM, I do not see a single model that say it will have 740QM CPU. So I guess we just have to wait for Asus to announce G53 to see if it will have the 740QM CPU.
-
No.
Given the power requirements of the GTX460, battery life should be slightly worst. -
So both laptops, G53JW and G73JW will have the gtx460.
Whats the difference between the two then, besides screen size? -
Not saying your wrong, but it really will come down how this cards behaves on downclocking and undervolting on 2d/idle.
-
So you know the TDP?
-
Fudzilla reports a 25% lower TDP compared to GF100 o.o
http://www.fudzilla.com/home/notebooks/gf104-geforce-gtx-460-mobile-to-come-this-summer
-
Hah. I wanted to ask the same thing before but I decided to let it slide.
Yeah but which GF100? Without knowing the relation to the core count and clocks 25% lower doesn't tell you anything definite. -
Lower is better though, anyways
-
It doesn't work that way. Just because one undefined instance of GF104 has a 25% lower power draw than an undefined instance of GF100 doesn't mean all derivatives of GF104 will have a 25% lower power draw than all derivatives of GF100. What's more is none of that gives us any info on how much juice the GF106 pulls.
Saying GF104 has a lower power draw than GF100, tells us absolutely nothing about how a GTX460M based on a GF106 relates to the power draw of the Mobility HD5870 in the current model ASUS G73 or the GTS 360M in the current model ASUS G51....and that is what the original question was. -
anyone have an idea of pricing on the g73jw with and without 3d?
also, is the gtx460 1 or 1.5 gigs dedicated? -
Think so. It's gonna be weak though, they say. Something around the range of 5870, which is a disappointment considering its late arrival.

SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
Ken's mentioned that the GPU in the G53, whatever the name is, is going to have 1.5GB of DDR5.
-
Since when did g53 release??
-
it didn't.
im surprised that both the g53 and g73 will have the same video card. I would think that the g73 would pack more heat to cover 3D gaming in full HD -
It is odd to get the 17". Since they both the same its more convenience to get the 15"
-
any chance there will be sli gpu?
-
Well its not that wierd... the G51 and G71 had the same GPUs, the G60 and G72 also had the same GPUs, so usually Asus had the same gpu on both 15'' and 17'' till the G60/G51JX and G73 where they used 360m and 5870.
I really doubt it... the chassis aren't not that big to fit dual cards.... can only dream of W90 succesor... but my guess is asus wont touch xfire/sli in a bit. -
might be odd to get the 17", but I'm considering it myself. 1920x1080 native on a 15.6" screen will make things a bit too small for my taste, and lowering the res deprives me of screen estate (and upscales everything too, worse quality). for me, the 17.3" makes sense now o_o
nah, I doubt there'll be dual GPUs. one, there really isn't that much space to stuff in a second one. two, that'd involve pairing up both GPUs or one GPU and the CPU to a vent (keeping with the original F117 inspired design), annnd that'd really diminish the cooling properties of it...Could add a third vent, but really, considering the airframe design of the F117, there really isn't a practical place to mount a vent, especially an exhaust. -
Sli would be really expensive in this rig anyway considering how much more Nvidia cards go for than ATI cards.
I prefer single card setups, SLI and XF are great but not worth it in my opinion, never mind the extra heat generated by the extra card. -
I've always wondered this, you know how some laptops possess two onboard GPUs that are switchable? not as in Optimus' IGP/GPU switching, as in how a macbook pro uses a 9600M and a 9400M.
so, you know how desktops are capable of using one primary beefy graphics card such as a GTX 480, and then adding on a weaker card like a GT240 just for PhysX acceleration? can you do that on a laptop that possesses two GPUs also? would be a nice alternative to using identical card SLI setups, just turn on the lesser card to accelerate PhysX. -
Sounds great in theory but bound to fail.(didn't some DELL 13" laptop have that with crappy results??)
I'm guessing you would need special drivers just for that.
Just give me a powerful single GPU and I'll be happy
-
So has it been truly confirmed that it's going to be a GTX 460M 1.5gb GDDR5? And where does it lie on the gpu chart compared to 5870, 5850, etc.?
-
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
We don't know the exact name of the device other than the codename is GF106somethingsomething. Ken has informed me that it will use 1.5GB of DDR5.
As for performance, it should be at around the level of the GTX 280m, which I think is above a GDDR5 5850 but below a GDDR5 5870. -
Yea i think (hope) the performance lands between a 5870 and 5850... hoping closer to the 5870
, but wondering about 6870 early next year also.
-
@Forge + Abula,
Meh, that's truly disappointing. It better goddamn have Optimus then, if it's gonna be a sucky video card in a brand-new machine. What's the deal with having 1.5gb anyways, if it's gonna be between 5870 and 5850? -
Well not all need the highest and fastest... in 15 is rough though, only Sager 8690 can claim to have something better, M15x comes with 5850 and the MSI GX640 also comes with 5850, so something in between a 5850 and 5870 seems acceptable for me in 15'', else only sager to look forward in this size for better performance. Now if you are talking about 17'' then there are other options and maybe the G73JW might have tougher time to compete, but i see no fault yet on G53 against whats available in the market.

SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
And, all things considered, I'm more used to nVidia GPUs, so I'd prefer their GPUs as long as pricing isn't outrageous (which it usually is). Thankfully, Asus is good with budget, high-powered machines.
As for the 1.5GB, I think it's there to help out with the 3D tech. I'm not going to be touching 3D glasses for my monitor, but I guess a 120MHz screen would be nice.
In any case, I've never owned a computer with the best graphics solution, single-GPU or SLI/Crossfire, so I don't mind at all. Moving up to a 460m is a perfectly fine upgrade for me... and since the cooling should be noticeably better, that means more overclocking headroom. -
Ah, good point. Since this same card will be in the new G73, then that's bound to be a disappointment.
Could you explain the need for more memory in a GPU? What's it actually do, since the card itself isn't faster? -

Although if you want a technical "why" explanation, I'm not the person to ask.
