Just got my G73-A1 replacement y'day. I've just found out about the G53 recently too. Now, I'm debating whether I should return the G73 and wait for the G53. :-( The only thing I dun like about G73 is its humongous size. If G53's performance was close to, or even better than G73's performance, then my dream gaming laptop would be complete. I'm still allowed 14 more days to return the laptop. Hopefully, there will be some reliable news about G53 so I can make up my mind. :)

Nvidia GTX460 should be slightly below the your ATI 5870 in gaming performance but nothing earth shattering.

How come I've never heard of BTO until now? Are they reputable?

Btw, what's the actual specs of the nVidia 460M anyway?

Man, been trying to configure a desktop setup on Newegg, and got really interested in the Gigabyte GTX 460 768mb card. Anyone know anything about the mobile version (specs, etc)?

I definitly like the price, 1500 dollars would be like €1200, but even if this asus comes at €1500 (sadly 1dollar is still 1 € on the computer market) it would still be better than anything else on the market here in Belgium.

you know, the desktop version just reminded me of something. did we ever decipher what the memory bandwidth on the mobile 460 is? desktop came with two different mem capacities with varying bandwidths, if I remember correctly.

192-bit for the 768mb one, and 256-bit for the 1gb one. I don't even know what these numbers mean, lol. But people on Tomshardware recommend the 192-bit 768mb as best-bang-for-buck for my needs. Hoping that the mobile version will be similar in performance.

Eh, I would never recommend having less than 1GB of video memory. There's just no logical reason to take the 192-bit chip.

I doubt Asus will upgrade a line with a lower performance graphics, but even so I'm still waiting for the G73jw as nvidia would be much more stable and with better driver updates. Thats important in a in a country where Asus doesn't have official support (Cyprus-go figure...) SC2 on a 18.4" full HD looks more than great, so I can afford a bit of wait.

    Hi,

First time poster here. I have been following this forum and espically this thread for quite a while.

I was quite interested as i'm after a gaming laptop that is quite powerful and as Sager dosen't sell in my country and Alienware is incredibly expensive, this seems to be the way to go.

I am trying to decide between a 15" and 17" notebook. I like the extra portability of the 15" but i am going from a desktop with a 24" screen so that might be too much of a change for me at this stage, and i probably won't be moving it around that much anyway so 17" might be the way to go.

Anyway i was a little confused about the g73jw having the GTX 460m. If it's performce is not quite as good ATI 5870 this seems like a strange choice as it's effectively a downgrade performancewise from what i understand. I can understand in the g53 and that does seem like a very good system.

So if i was looking at 17" for gaming then i would be better off with the G73jh right? Is the G73jw effectively going to be just for 3d (which i imagine very few gamers actually want)?

Does anyone know if it would be upgradable to a 480m or if there are any other manufacturers that are planning on releasing a 15" or 17" with the GTX 480m (other than sager/clevo 8850)?

I really doubt a G53 or even the G73 will be able to deal with GTX480, and probably not even worth the $$$ difference for gain performance, as with the past gen, where Asus didn't touched the GTX285m only Sager n Alienware did (and MSI late), i feel this might repeat again, I think asus is gona stick with GTX460 till ati released 6XXX or Nvidia next gen.

Why don't you keep the 24" screen? You can plug the monitor up to the notebook when you are at home and you have the freedom of being able to carry it anywhere with you.

Imo, even with a 17inch screen, it's going to be a big difference when you compare it to a 24inch.

Is it confirmed that the g73jw is going to have gtx 460? Or was it only official for the g53? If not any possibility of the g73jw having a 470m or 480m with a more efficient chip?

Yeah, i probably will do that. If they have the same card dosen't seem like much point in getting the g73jw unless i am missing something.

    Either way bring on september!

nothing is confirmed yet...a french website have 73jw for preorder and claims it is going to be with the 460, but also with intel 720qm, which I don't think is possible, as intel upgraded the line.
my bet is that it'll be offered with both cards- 460 as a regular priced and 480 for those who can afford to pay the premium. news should be coming very soon if asus wants to have a chunk of the back-to-school sales.

I am still window-shopping for a good gaming system (laptop or desktop parts). I really want to have the portability of a computer that I can bring anywhere with me, and was wondering a few things... With a gaming laptop, I know that battery life prolly dosen't exceed 2hours on a stock battery, which is fine for me, since I'll be hunting for a plug or be plugged in most of the time, regardless of where I'm at. But, what's better: 2nd (extra) battery, or a bigger-cell battery (let's say I purchase through xoticpc/1toppc)? If I get either option, how much more battery life should I roughly expect from each?

    Thanks!

I really hope they say "Q4" only because they don't want their current sales hurt.
this EU website claims that it will be available in aug 23rd

    www.WebConneXXion.com | It s all about RAID

ok, I just found an Philippines' seller who is saying that he just got the packaging lists for the G53jw, available aug 17th

Unfortunately Asus don't make bigger battery than 8 cell for G53JW, 8 cell battery is the only battery available.

    g73jw's listed as $1699, fyi

and personally, I'm just going with an extra battery. Soon as the batt runs out, hibernate, swap batteries, and I'm good to go to take another 2 hours of game time.

Do mean a smaller model 13"-14"?
    I doubt it.

Like I stated before BB will carry this model but more than likely come with 1366x768 res and a lower powered i5.
I seriously doubt the BB model come with full HD and the i7.

I agree with Ikas, i think bestbuy is gona try to aim at their replacement of the G60JX, which was a $1k low budget gaming laptop, but to take down this will require low res screen($50-100), dvd instead of blu ray ($100), 4gb instead of 8gb of ram ($100), 1 hdd ($80), i5 instead of i7 ($100), that probably should put it close to $1000 which more or less been what this series have been moving around.

Im wondering though, on an amazon/newegg version like the X3, which on the G51J was a $1100 with 1080p screen, kinda to compete with GX640.

If you think about it still a great deal if your not adamant about having a 1920x1080 screen res.
If BB can sell this setup for under or around $1100 it would be a huge hit.

USB 3.0 port inspired me to get one for my desktop. My desktop isn't gonna lag behind my lappy :D. All I need to do now is swap my dual 9600s for a decent DX11 card, can't decide whether to pounce on a GTX 470 or sit it out for a GTX 475 though.

Scanning around right now for a bigger backpack to hold this thing, that 2.36" height is KILLING it XD
