I wasn't aware.

Those are some hideous LED lights.
-
But for features, this trumps G53 easily. -
Is the 660 better than the G73jw? I don't really see any difference, but maybe I'm missing something.
-
The other difference is the 660 has the HD5870M which is the 2nd best GPU after GTX 480M. Face it, the 460M will not be as fast as the HD5870M.
- Nvidia's answer to HD5870M is GTX 480M and 460M is answer to ATi's HD5850M/HD5830M.
So comparing the 660 to the G53... the 660 will likely have better warranty, better performance, better cooling, better battery life and all the ports and slots G53 doesn't have. 660 has easy access for maintenance, upgrades and modifications.
Don't take my word for it. Do the research. Look at the 660. We are talking about $1,500. IMO one should look at every option before spending that kind of cash. 660 in my personal opinion/view is the best 15" notebook for the money beating the G53 handily. -
Is the GX660 a 1 fan or 2 fan setup?
Judging from the pictures it looks like a 1 fan setup only like the GX640 -
K. Thx. I'll let you return to your G53 now
-
Geez people. 2 fan cooling systems are becoming the new 256 bit GPU stubborn answer haha.
It doesn't matter if it is 2 fan or single fan as long as it does its job well. The MSI handles the component's heats extremely well and does compete and outpace several 17inchers when it comes to cooling.
As for looks, maybe you should wait for my review to see different pics than the reseller. The case itself is essentially the same as G50/G51 and does not look bad at all.
And Thanks to God and MSI, the freaking LEDs can be turned off! the important things are the features and performance it packs, which are superior to the G53. Why do they keep putting weird LEDs on the machines? It was midly amusing with my G50vt but damm did it become obnoxios soon
Sadly, my review will take a bit of time, probably until weekend because my new workplace is quite more demanding than my old job, so I hardly have time left. -
Well to be honest, the gpu doesn't bother me that much. If I can run my rts' and some games at max graphics I'll be happy. I don't buy every new game that gets release, so top of the line best gpu in the world doesn't really do anything for me.
-
Sure it does, that's more eyecandy you can enable.
-
Only a little hijaak, more like a can the G53 do better...
Based on these two pics:
660
G73JH
The 660 is running 11C hotter for about the same frame rate. This seems like a lot to have on your lap. Can anyone do an outlet temp on these two at about the same load? My little laptop that I want to seriously upgrade gets toasty and the G53 sounds like just the ticket from a temperature standpoint.

Asus just announced the release of two new laptops in the UK. Both are N series, but I'm hoping this means that we really are getting closer to hearing about the release of the G53.
ASUS N53JN and N73JN with Blu-ray and SonicMaster sound now available in the UK -- Engadget -
Homer S, pics don't mean nothing without all the deatails.
Could be that one has stock thermal paste and the other uses a quality aftermarket thermal paste.
Any way both temps are more than acceplable. -
When your customizing most computers and it has the two Wireless Network options, what difference is it between the standard 802.11 G/B/N Wireless Lan Module and the Intel® Advanced-N 6200 - 802.11A/B/G/N Wireless LAN Module?
-
For gaming and general use, you won't notice any difference. You'll only notice a difference if you are on a wireless network and transferring a ton of data at a given speed. For example maybe streaming HD video or something. If you don't do that, you won't notice any difference at all. -

why are people so fixated on laptop temps? If it works it will be hot. g73 has a better cooling design. That is not to say that those tests are acurate or that it makes a difference in performance. when it comes to laptops the bottom temps means little. Those tests show 3dmark not running, which is why the gpu temp is rated 54c. What is important is that your laptop does not sound like a hover craft. G73 is almost perfect except it is bulky and missing a few essential ports.

I agree completely. People need to get it through their heads. Having something running at 65C or 75C won't make a difference to the life of the GPU. It won't affect performance. But having a notebook you can't hear while you are gaming vs a notebook you can, is a massive and significant difference.
Plus are any of you going to be gaming with the G73 5 years from now? Pretty sure 100% of you will have upgraded by that time.
There is nothing more annoying than gaming with loud fans IMO. -

Seriously after 1000 posts i realized that this topic will always resurface and i gave up arguing and started selling as5 and ICD upgrades like everyone else. I can without any shame say that i make money on misinformed individuals who think ICD or AS5 is an upgrade worth 25$.
P.S. the people who want icd mostly come from forums odly enough -
-
So the 660 is better than the G73jh?
-
People buy the G73 because it is 17", people buy the 660 because it is 15"
The 660 has less ram and less HDD space. But the 660 comes with much more ports, eSATA, USB 3.0, Expressport, etc.
But what sets the G73 apart from ANY gaming notebook is that it runs quiet. It's quieter than my g/f business class notebook, it's quieter than my co-workers MacBook Pro when he actually has to do work... -
K. I was saying this cause by seeing the 3d scores from those pictures, I noticed that the score of the 660 was higher.
-
And as others have said, every die is different. No two HD5870s are the same. The highest score I've seen from G73jh is 10,000 for example. Highest I've gotten without using a cooler was 9,100 with safe temperatures. -
2) G73JH owners are interested in repasting because of the really lousy job a few of us are getting from stock installation. ( -23C on load difference IS significant )
I grant you that if the unit is assembled well with decent paste done properly, yeah, repasting is a giant waste of time. However, idling at 71C and getting load temps of 104C is running a bit hot. -
You tell em Chastity!
From my personal experience every time I opened up one of my laptops the application of the stock thermal paste was done very sloppy. It was always to much and looked like it was done by someone that was paid by how much paste they used.I agree charging anything more than $5 or $10 for adding ICD or AS5 is just stealing money from those that are a little intimidated by doing themselves. I've always done it myself and it's well worth it.
If Geared2play thinks it's a waste of money for adding thermal paste maybe they should offer the upgrade free as a goodwill gesture considering most gaming laptops sell for well over $1000. -
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
Hmm. Waiting for more resellers to compare a G73--which should be as loud as a G53, I assume--and the GX660R fan noise.
Ken's been telling me the MSI is quite quiet for what it's packing, but I don't know how 660 "quiet" compares to G73/G53 "quiet". I'm assuming we won't be hearing Clevo-esque hurricanes, at least. -
I don't think anyone should be paying that much to have thermal paste applied but it doesn't mean u shouldn't do it in the longrun. Stock thermal paste tends to dry out much quicker and plus no matter how much cooler it makes ur system run, any amount of cooler sounds pretty good performance increase or not.
-
Hopefully the experience with G73 tells Asus that their design isn't stopping anyone who has experience with gaming notebooks from taking it apart and make the next (G74?) generation more accessible. -
I am loving it. The only real disappointing part is the screen, since it seems to be the same AUO screen with very limited viewing angles.
Other than that, the machine is amazing.
Oh, forgot to mention how incredible the sound on this thing is. I am amazed at the quality and loudness that these speakers pack. -
OK, I am so lost now, are you guys saying that I should or should not get the as5 and ICD thermal paste upgrade when customizing g73, whenever I am going to buy it?
I have no experience in applying thermal paste, and I do not intend to void my warranty by experimenting with it. I would rather just pay extra while I am customizing it at the website!
Is it really worth it from stock to another brand thermal paste? -
I will only wait uptill max labor day, then screw it, I am getting the g73jh. I am tired!! Nvidia can take its super delayed 460m and jam it up their........
-
Maybe there needs to be a second dedicated thread for G73jw? I mean the title for this one is clearly G53, a 15" notebook.
When I saw the description and videos for the 660, I was blown away. Truly an amazing machine for 15" notebook. As said, glad you are loving it and congratz!
XoticPC has it listed with over 2 hours battery life. What's your experience been? -
How did you get your laptop so fast, didn't they just come out a day or two ago?
So the screen is it just the viewing angles?
How is brightness?
You have to give us the low down on the fan noise.
Good Luck with your new laptop and I'm waiting for a review -
I agree with a lot of your points. My main concern is that the laptop I use now is at the top end of what it can do to play... Dragon Age. My hands get hot as the design of this one puts the hard drive directly under my left palm. To add insult to injury, the main vent is on the same side, right in the middle.
I'm wondering where the "hot spots" are on the 660 and if the cooling design on the G53 relieves these. So less about absolute component temp and more about where the user perceives it to be venting. My laptop is for when I'm not in the traditional PC on table, buns in chair, scenario. The thing is in my lap and if I'm playing a game, I will be doing it for a long time, not days on end long but you get the picture.

I neither care about over volting, nor do I know how to. I just want to run it stock without all the flashing of Vbios (which I dont understand anyway).
My question is, should I buy a G73jh or wait for G73jw (stability is all I care for). I am only in USA for another 10 days( extended flight already). I will be running everything at stock speeds. Will I have problems of GSOD and VBIOS errors others have mentioned, if I only use stock Asus GPU drivers without over volting or changing to 3rd party drivers? I will only update gpu drivers when Asus them selves releases them(stock drivers)
I also donot care about any features at all on the G73JW. I just care about stability. -
If you're only around for another 10 days, it is kinda urgent, isn't it, lol. All I know is the G73jh has had some problems with the gsod, which asus is currently fixing if the authors of the previous posts are correct, but I don't know enough to give any advice for that.

I was waiting for the g53 3d. I want something to run high end games and to give me 3d & full HD. Are there other options out there, does the 640 or 660 have the needed 120 hz screen required? Any advice greatly appreciated.
-
BTOTech said for them it's 10 out of 1,000 sold and among those 10, some just return not because of defect they just didn't like the notebook. These 10 include everything from PSOD, GSOD, screen, or GPU issues.
How stable is the G73? There is nearly 100% chance of stability. Less than 1% of having an issue.
BTO and other resellers have continuously said the issues over G73 are blown completely out of proportion and the hysteria is absolutely unjustified by the actual number of cases with issues.
And also the resellers do stand behind that the G73 is cooling is excellent contrary to some very outspoken G73 bashers on this forum.
I hope that answers the question.
You really want to know? Don't ask the few unhappy G73 owners who complain everyday on this forum. Ask the people whom you would purchase a Asus gaming notebook from. Get it straight from the source.
- Ken at GenTech
- BTOTech,
- Powernotebooks
- XoticPC
- PC Canada
All of these sources answer by phone and email promptly and fast. All are credible and well known reputable resellers. All of them have their loyal customers who return to buy another Asus gaming notebook. -
GSOD only happen if you use no-asus drivers...
-
It came out like 2 days ago, but I odered next day air shipping because I needed the machine for work related reasons. Which is why I havent finished the review at all and I have little time during the week to do so.
The brightness is excellent, the only bad part are the viewing angles that are rather limited to about 15-25 degrees before colors start to show distortion. For individual use, I am always in the sweet spot so that does not bother me much at all, but can make viewing from sides or turning the screen quite a pain to see.
Fan noise has been rather silent during office hours. battery seems to last about 2 hours and 40 mins on office mode. Thats over twice I could muster from my G51J haha.
Ill try to have my review done by Saturday. -
