wow.. more ppl r jumping into the msi boat! ur making me "Undecided"
-
If they both were available at the same time I would more than likely go with the G53 but now it's only vaporware. I needed to upgrade now not maybe in a month or two.
-
Well im not 100% sure im upgrading atm.... still want to see laptops out on user hands and see benches n temps. My G51 still holding fine, i mostly play WOW n SC2, both games arent that demanding, and atm have no plans into moving to any other game this year, would like to 900p/1080p screen, but will see.
Looking forward to your reviews n modding on the MSI. Hope your machine is worth the betrayal.. jk, good luck.
-
I'm still here with you Abula. I'll likely get the G53 unless the reviews come back that the screen is terrible, or that fan noise is unbearable.
I'll likely get a SSD upgrade but keep most of the other specs at stock. Im currently using an ati 5650 at 1600x900, I'm guessing the 460m will run better even with the higher resolution. -

The best thing that could happen is that asus and nvidia got scared of the competition and is adding some minor tweaks to bring it up to par. Doesn't make sense for asus to introduce their next flagship laptop knowing their competitor has a so called "better" one with equal price. It's like saying ta da look at the best we got, it's not as good as our competition but yay!
-
What really doesn't make sense if Nvidia releases 460 being only about 18% slower than their flagship which costs 3X as much. Now that would make no sense at all. Especially if they have a GTX 470M in the works as well.
What I really can't believe none of you seem to factor in the cost of a 120hz LCD. That alone will impact the cost of the G73jw again. As I said these notebooks focus most definitely be on 3D. -
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
Then again, I'm installing stuff and the cores are at high 60s low 70s. I'm not sure if my pasting job was bad or what.
-
But I hope you are enjoying the most powerful 15" beast at $1,600. -
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
I am. I'm just wondering if my pasting job was bad, thus making the CPU hotter, thus making the fan spin faster/louder. Oh well. I'll have to give it a looksee.
-
Keep in mind Core i7 on these 15 inchers don't run that cool. My G51J had high 50s when normal work, and heavy use reached 76 to even 85 depending on the work done.
My current temps are bewteen 55 to 75 depending on light and heavy use.
My GPU temps with normal fan match those temps too. -
With no information on the G73jw, I'll wait, because my opinion of buying something will be based on speculative specs. The light is near, I don't see why bailing out now is a good idea, when in a week to 2 weeks we'll have ( I assume) alot more details. Heck, the 460m is supposed to be announced, and just that will indicate the future of the G73/G53.
-
G73JH-A1 =$1549
G73JH-B1 =$1749 (133MHZ CPU UPGRADE)
G73JW =$1645 (133MHZ CPU UPGRADE, USB3.0, 120HZ SCREEN, WIRELESS HDMI, 460 M 1.5GB VRAM, 1333MHZ RAM AS STANDARD, BETTER INTERNAL COOLING TO PREVENT GSOD)
what does G73jh-B1 have? a measly 133mhz cpu upgrade??
for which, it costs $200 more than the g73jh-A1
g73JW with 460m may be slower, big if, but the reason its more costly than g73jh-a1 is because g73jw has many new features like 120hz screen, usb 3.0, WIDI (wireless HD streaming with 0 latency), 1333mhz Ram standard(as compared to 1066 in g73JH), newer internal circuity to prevent GSOD's
then why is g73jh-B1 so much more expensive than the g73jh-A1 model or the upcoming g73JW model?
discuss -
I honestly dont even see the point of why they released the B1. Seems pointless for just a minor cpu upgrade and a price hike.
-
However you are right; 133mhz difference in processor does not constitute $200 extra, IMO. -
So only the G73JW is 3d capable? I want the 3D one! I hate waiting for stuff!
-
The point is, are we willing to buy the g73jh-B1 & pay $200 more, without even knowing that all the GSOD issues are fixed. Till this point it is just assumptions and hopes that g73-B1 will solve the issues.
Asus did say that B1 will be sold at the same price point as A1, I think it is so expensive right now is because it is in short supply and the fact that it is just released! -
We will all have to just wait till Sep 3, when G73JW pre order starts & the price is stated, to see in which direction this fiasco of a circus will move towards!
-
Lol big storms are brewing for my part of the world, due on septembre 3rd. If If I loose power on septembre 3rd, ima kill someone.
-
So in theory, without knowing the GTX 460 benchmark and judging by the difference in price between The 73JH-B1 and 73JW.. 73JH would be better than both G53JW and g73JW?
-
Not really, it's not only the gpu worth looking at. It's getting a 120hz screen and better ram. The processor is a 740qm which is equal, memory wise it's equal, but the G73jw has more features such as USB 3.0 and sibeam. We won't know the full difference between the G73jw and the G73jh until the 460m is released and we start seeing some unbiased reviews and benches on it.
-
isnt 1.5gb of 460m vram going to make even little difference? as compared to 1gb of 5870m
-
- What this means ATi's memory controller feeds to two quad render output units per each channel, for GDDR5.
As above, the G53 and G73jw you are buying not just for a decent GPU. It's the 120hz monitor, the USB 3.0, and the WIDI.
You just have to use common sense, there is no way Asus can afford to use a direct competitor to the HD5870M and sell the G73/G53 at the same price.
Put it this way, when you configure a desktop gaming machine, and choosing between a normal LCD and a 3D LCD, the cost difference is about $400-1000 depending. -
1.5 gb VRAM does make a difference tho.
-
So with the upcoming Sandy Bridge CPU's, their processing power will be superior to current i7's but will the integrated GPU be good enough for serious gaming? Or is it just serviceable and the advantage is its lesser power consumption/increased efficiency?
Would it be still better to have a discrete GPU? -
discrete GPUs are more upgradable, YESSS discrete rocks.
and I'm still on the G53 bandwagon with ya guys -
In order to go beyond we now have tessellation, but that is still just increasing polygons.
If you read some theories of future tech, believe people want to evolve beyond Polygons.
We are in the cross roads because we have the ideas and theories to go beyond polygons, but the current hardware is not capable and still limited to rasterizing polygons.
Someday when CPU becomes powerful enough, I believe GPU will be obselete. -
But until then, yes , discrete graphics are better.
-
-
Depends on the specs. If there good enough, then no upgrades. If they suck then possibly upgrades or G73jh
-
I think I'm going to wait for either a Sager, MSI, or Asus notebook to come out with Sandy Bridge CPU and a 5870 or 460m sometime in the first half of 2011.
-
Uh dudes. It seems the benchmarks for the HD6xxx are starting to come out. And the news is very good, so good that I don't believe that even a refresh of GF104 based GTX 485 will have anything on it.
Vantage score of xtreme 11K+. Most scores are with performance.
And we know for mobile use ATi will provide 256 bit GDDR5 with improved memory controller. IMO, before you buy your G53, wait a month and see what HD6xxx has.
G53 IMO in October. Wait a month in November and see what an HD6xxx is. It's a HD5xxx refresh, but the performance seems like an entire new beast. -
Thanks for the info - cant wait to see how the numbers come out. I've had good luck with ATI thus far, but I'm not sure I can wait until november. Work bought me a computer which I returned so I could gets something better, and in the meantime I have the return money in my account, which is slightly shady because it appears I'm ripping them off. I'd like to buy a replacement ASAP.
-
- And I'm going to assume for 2,000 more score, it will still cost half of the GTX 480.
This is good news!! Very good news!! Current HD5870 is about 8,800-9000. This is about a 33% boost in performance. And if this holds true down the line...
I'd say expect a HD6870M to be cheaper than a GTX 460M and about 50% faster. Based on that HD5870M is about 30% faster than a GTX 285 (same # cores as 460M). -
Hmm interesting but wouldn't the Mobile 6870 be a lot of money? And I thought the ATI mobile cards would come out after the desktop cards? So when is everything supposed to be released? And is there a chance the mobility 5870 will be cut in price?
So many questions haha -
Hope asus makes the G53 at least a little easier to take apart. Non of that stupid doublesided tape behind the keyboard.
-
How bout you link us the articles and we check those benches for ourself? Those are alot of facts, and I'd rather see sources. Plus I'm not waiting cause these cards aren't going into any laptops. And if I wait till November, it'll be the sandy bridges. And by january it'll be new nvidia cards just around the corner, and ziddy will attack those new nvidia cards in every way and say that the ati cards are better. Then something will come around and we'll all be waiting for a hell of a long time. Plus, if 2 GTX 460 cards beat the ati 6xxx cards, and the two 460s cost 450$ and the 6xxx card cost 500, what's the point?
-
Ha - so true. But I do have to agree that ATI has been putting out much better products for a lower price lately. I'm guessing it will be 2011 before we get too much on the mobile ati 6xxx cards - releases in 2010 would suprise me.
-
The point is, there will always be better cards that will keep coming out! -
Sandy Bridge+6870>Current Slow i7 Quads with GTX460m
A GTX 460 refresh wouldn't release before 2011 Fall heh so if you are dying for a new laptop get the G53 but if you already got a decent laptop paying 1500$ for a laptop that will be murdered in performance after 3 months doesn't look wise -
There, you have the truth, If you can give me one good reason not to upgrade from my current xps 1710 with a "7900go GS" to this beast of a machine to be happy for the next 4 months in peace, say it so or forever hold your ground!
-
in Q1 2011 people will get +100% extra CPU performance (Sandy Bridge)
And +30% Extra GPU performance (256bit 6870 over the current 5870
Sandy Bridge = 2.2Ghz+25% over current i7 Which means +100% CPU power when you do the math combined with the higher turbo boost 2.0 over the curent i7 1.600Ghz
I know people keep saying "there is always new tech around the corner you will never buy anything if you keep waiting) but there is always times when there is HUGE jump and Q1 2010 is worth waiting.
I keep checking the thread hoping G53 would be released soon but it doesn't seems like it, I'll buy one if it get released in sep (For FFXIV at the end of sep) so we will see what happens :/
Hopefully more info will be available at sep3 -
But what if the sandy bridge is just a 480? What if it just sips a bunch of power and is overpriced? Same for the ati cards, by the time they release the mobile versions of the 6xxx cards, it'll be well into 2011, and then we'll have to wait for a laptop to launch having these specs in it. I mean it's more of a gamble than anything. Might pay off real well, but might keep you waiting for a long time. What happens if the nvidia 500 series come out next summer and have leaked benches showing that they're way better?
-
Don't get me wrong, I see your point and understand it. 100 percent CPU upgrade is not always very near and it's a major upgrade. I'm just worried to make the wrong decision.
-
They say Intel might preview sandybridge in CES 2011 so that's awhile for a preview
