I was hoping to order an Asus G53 by the time I arrive in America (January-ish), however, Sandy Bridge / Ati 6xxx will be right around the corner.
Any chance of a pricedrop on the G53 by then?
-
Well it's not like you're going to get a direct answer but I'd say no. This thing is going to be in huge demand; I'm pretty sure the first shipment is already sold out. Asus is aware of the 6000 series and sandy, so they most likely will not make the same mistake of their older models and make too many of them.
People are saying that the g73jh is getting sold out now, and they aren't making anymore. I'd predict the same thing to happen with the 73jw and 53jw, but then again, I could be totally wrong. Time will tell... I however, cannot wait any longer! -
There might be clearences or even some sales, but i doubt it. I share the thoughts of fgocards, specially the G53 imo is gona be in huge demand since its the first real refresh to their 15'' line. While Sandy bridge is close so is the ATI 6XXX for desktops, might take a while for the mobile versions, AMD Radeon HD 6800 series might launch in 2011?, i kinda think ATI is doing the same as Nvidia did this year early on, predicting they are coming soon, when in reallity still some time, if the desktop versions are delayed specially the 6870 then so will the mobile version, i think sandy bridge might make it before, thus maybe even an Nvidia G53 refresh with same gpu and just new cpu/mobo/memory, like it happen with G51--> G60, idk for real its just specualation on my part, the only reason that should be waiting is if you dont need it right now, else just get this or the MSI GX660R.
-
What kind of fps should we be getting from this on sc2 ultra?
-
Pretty much the same scores the ATI 5870 gives +/- 5%
-
around 36 fps

Hey guys, as I was looking around yesterday I noticed that powernotebooks.com now has the G53jw-a1 available with one plus though... comes with a 750gb HDD 7200RPM with the option of adding another hard drive all at the same price ($1499 stock). I'm thinking jackpot?
http://www.powernotebooks.com/ASUS-G53JW-A1-gaming-laptops-notebooks-sys-3562.html -
nice, but you'll only get the secondary 750gb HDD if you get a SSD drive as primay one... or correct me if i'm wrong.
750GB SATA II 3GB/s 7,200 RPM Hard Drive (Getting Primary SSD) -
Oh, missed that, you're right. But still the single 750gb over the 500gb is nice. Unless it's a mistake, then back to square one. =(
-
Remember ur also paying for service so 250g might not be a good trade for the other company compared to let's say gentech!!! Could be wrong, dunno about powernotebooks
-
What are your thoughts on ssds? Is it worth it to get a SSD, and a 1TB hdd as a secondary?
-
To me it is, makes the laptop much more responsive, but this really depends on each. And there are no 1tb 2.5 drives that i know, the highest i seen is the 750gb which is 12.5mm so it might not fit any slot, for me its enough with 500gb, i have an external 2tb in case i need more, but i rarely use it.
-
External 120Hz monitor or HDTV will work, that is why the non-3D version comes with HDMI 1.4.
-
Now that I've used a SSD I'll never go back. Its much faster (my load times in some games went from over 2 minutes down to 30 seconds), uses less power, produces less heat and noise, and is resistant to dropping. I plan on only putting a SSD in the system and using a large external drive for backup.
-
Using a G2 Intel SSD here and i will never ever go back to the slow crackling HDD. I am using SSD for programs, games and OS. And have an external HDD where i put my movies, music and tv shows on
SSD is the future, but too bad its so expensive. If you have the money, buy it. No doubt
-
what you think about the seagate hybrid driver
-
Just look up some Youtube videos, and get on newegg and check out the customer review. It falls between a SSD and HDD basically.. Yes the SSD is faster, but not by a huge margin. A 500gb version is only $120... 500gb of SSD? lol... That's like what? $1500 just for the drive?
-
According to notebook check benchmarks 5870 was only 2% Faster than 460m
That's pretty impressive, however 5870 is a very hot card (Some people pass the 100C in this forum) i wonder how hot 460m gets, if it was not that hot then G53 turned out to be a very cool laptop to buy
Only thing that can ruin it if it's still getting GSOD, other than that it's the perfect laptop anyone can buy now. -
Isnt the ATI drivers linked to the GSOD?
-
Like fgocards pointed out, it is faster than HDDs but a little slower than pure SSDs. So it is an upgrade from standard 7200 RPMs
-
From what I have read in forums, SSD's are causing stuttering in games to save power, this can be turned off at the registry which would make it smooth again but causes the space under the hard drive to become very hot. Apparently Intel is working on the driver to solve the issue!
-
Both cards should be around the same in temps due to the cooling solution. Performance may vary with drivers for both cards, as well as notebooks.
For example, I use my radeon HD5870m at 820/1030 to game, and my max temp is less than 80C most of the time with auto cooling.
Since G53 is the small brother of G73, expect it to be silent, but it may run a bit on the hotter side. I doubt it will have GSoDs this time around, because that was more of an especific Asus HD5870 problem, that got fixed with an update.
Lastly, performance can't be determined yet, as notebookcheck often uses settings like 1024x768 res, which is not really representative of either card/system. -
SHADE FROM ANOTHER THREAD POSTS:
Although I donot believe the benchmarks posted on gamestar.de as they have Desktop gtx460 beating or equal performance to Desktop HD5870. Atleast we have the tentative release dates -
I am wondering and wondering what the difference the intel 1000 wireless card is to the old asus atheros in g73jh, I was planning on upgrading to the intel 6200, but is it worth it now?
-
so does this mean the non 3d version will not have a 120hz screen?
-
Correct, if you want a 120hz screen you'll need to wait til nov/dec or later and then buy a (more expensive) 3D version.
The intel 1000 appears to be related to the 5100, so it should be about the same as the atheros and worse than the 6200. -
So i plan on buying the G73jw, with a momentus xt 500gb hybrid drive as the primary drive, stock secondary drive, thermal paste applied, and an intel 6200. And since the CAD is almost on par with the USD, it won't cost me much more, xept for 60$ shipping, but there's no taxes. After looking at reviews here and there, there was alot of complaining of this drive having problems. Does anyone know how reliable it is?
-
Anyone know if the Asus G series has Dolby Headphone support? I have some PortaPros lying around and I would like to get 5.1-7.1 virtual surround sound without needing a Astro Mixamp/Dolby soundcard.
-

The small upgrade price on the 6200 is worth it IMO. The 6200 is Dual Band and has MyWifi (PAN and Wifi hotspot). If you would like these additional options. -

Be careful about no taxes. You will still have to pay the GST and PST if applicable in your location. You will also have to pay brokerage is you select Canada Standard shipping, although brokerage is included if you select Expedited shipping. -
I'll probably take the expedited shipping, but how does the taxes work? What will I have to pay?
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
You have to pay whatever you would pay if you were buying it in Canada. Canadian Customs will see to that. UPS will handle the brokerage for you and show up asking for whatever PST & GST is due.
-
Justin@XoticPC Company Representative
If you are not familiar with your local GST/PST here is a good table for it -
If i get the non 3d version of the G53, would I still be able to hook it up to a 3D tv to view 3d content and games?
-
ten characters -.-
-
Yes, it has HDMI 1.4.
-
Lol dammit I didn't want to pay the hst, oh well. I wonder if they'll charge me the Eco fee. And also, screw getting the 3d model, by the time I buy myself a new tv, I'm sure we'll be at the point when 120hz screens are common.
-
Justin@XoticPC Company Representative
Since it comes with the software to run 3D on a External Monitor, you can get a nice big 3D External Screen
.
-
Lol, that's a certainty
-
Hey guys, been reading the topic for a while now. Really want to pre-order G53, but prob going to w8 until somebody who already preorderd posts their first expressions.
Since this is going to be my first desktop replacement/ gaming laptop I am really curious if i need the termal compound that is offered by gentech and xotic. I am not planning to do any OC. $75 price tag is not cheap, but I never had powerfull gaming laptop before so I have no idea if benefits outweight the cost (maybe thats a necessity for a powerfull 15" laptop).
Also wanted your advice on retailers. From what I read before Gentech, Xotic and BTOtech were all praised for their customer service, maybe Gentech a little more (I guess their propaganda better =). So I thought to go with Gentech. But then I heard that Gentech does not offer full price return policy and BTOtech doesnt seem to have any discounts for G53. Do you know if that info is still true? -
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
It depends on the cooling of the individual laptop. I've never hit 95C yet, even overclocked to 840/1050, and testing with furmark. Most users of the MSI MX600[R] are reporting very good GPU temperatures, too.
And I think the GSOD was an Asus-specific problem. I haven't lurked in Alienware or Clevo, but I haven't heard about [insert color here]SODs from them. The 5870 in my own machine is going on error-free, too.
Still, I want to see what the 460m is capable of. I was drooling over it and the G53. Huh. I wonder if it'll be possible to upgrade--downgrade? sidegrade?--my GPU when it comes out. -

For individual reseller questions it is always better to contact the resellers themselves. This way you avoid hearsay and get the reliable information.
The IC Diamond added to CPU + GPU has shown from 7-12 degrees Celsius cooler temps under heavy load when compared to the ASUS factory compound.

Does anyone know what the GTX 470 is supposed to be like? power hungry like the 480? Apparently alienware is getting it?
i know some of the clevos are starting to offer then in sli as well.. pricey upgrade.... but its not to much more expensive than the 460... -
Totally different architecture. The 480m was a rushed card, the 460 and 470m are based on the same architecture. When comparing, consider the heat and power requirements to be more like the 460, not the 480.
-
Okay folks, the G53 and G73 is now officially shipping!!!!!!!!!
Republic of Gamers G53 and G73
Enjoy... like hell ya! (sorry just way too excited on my end)
I was correct, G53 supports optimus
. Sorry to those stuck with the PM55 motherboards. I do envy your express card slots though.

That is a press release, but I fear you misinterpret the language.
Neither are actually shipping yet, but when they do they will have the just released nVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M w/1.5GB GDDR5 -
Well the first paragraph says it all, but you're right. It doesn't say 'now shipping'. But, it likely refers to shipping to resellers if not today then soon. I mean, it's still a press release, right?
Nice to see that they actually posted this on the ROG site first like they stated.
Oh, there's no subwoofer in the G53, which should be okay since it wasn't much of a subwoofer anyway.
It seems that THX TruStudio (Creative) will be superior than Dolby Home Theater. Can anyone confirm? -
Can someone explain to me what optimus is, Seems like a big deal to some of you here! Does G73Jw have it and does G53 have it? Also when configuring the G73, it says"$15 for recovery disks"! arent they included as standard?
-
Does anyone notice the dimensions and weight between the G53 and the G73 they have only 2cm and only 250 gram differences, isn't that weird? Shouldn't the G53 to be a bit smaller and lighter?
Dimensions
G53
39.1 x 29.7 x 2.00-5.00 centimetres (W x D x H)
3.6 kilograms (with 8-cell battery)
G73
41.5 x 32.0 x 1.89-5.69 centimetres (W x D x H)
3.85 kilograms (with 8-cell battery)
Edit: Can anyone explain how a 15inch laptop and a 17 inch laptop have such small differences? Shouldn't the the width of the 15inch laptop to be about 5cm smaller than the 17inch laptop? -

For a good read on Optimus go to Optimus Technology.
Neither the ASUS G73JW-A1 or ASUS G53JW-A1 have Optimus technology.
No, ASUS stopped including the OS recovery Disks with their laptops in about March of this year. They do have a utility called A1Recovery where you can burn your own set of 6 DVDs to restore, but that will only restore it to factory settings including all of the bloatware and scamware. The ASUS OS recovery Disk that you see for $15 is a single DVD that will give you a clean OS install without any bloatware or scamware.
