I pre-ordered a couple of days ago with Powernotebooks and confirmed they will be honoring the specs as ordered. So far they have been great to deal with. Getting the cash discount by going to a bank branch and depositing a bunch of large bills was an interesting experience. The teller definitely thought there was something shady going on until I answered her 100 questions on the laptop specs![]()

what cash discount and why deposit bills to bank to get it?
I donot understand -
So, if i read the Google-hash of the German page right it shows the 460M having it's lunch money taken by the 5870M. Is that right?

All you have to do is visit our website to see:
1. Our 3% and 5% cash discounts
2. Our sales special on the ASUS G73JH-A1 w/free upgrade to 8GB DDR3/1333
So, that makes the ASUS G73JH and even better deal for you according to what you posted earlier. -
anyone know if it has a SPDIF input for optical out?
-
Pretty similar specs. Mine is 1.83 GHz core2, same RAM and HDD. The video card fried about 3.5 years into a 4 year in-home warranty and was replaced with a 7950 Go GTX. Dell service was great btw (once I got through the phone maze). They replaced the video card and then saw a few other things they fixed for free (frayed battery cable, palm rest). This ASUS will be my first non-Dell laptop. I had been buying from Dell since 1998...
-
my friend got an xps 13 about 3 years ago... pretty nice for the size, but he said the glue was literally coming off his laptop.
-
Usually, I am quite careful about these things, and I still think that XoticPC is a wonderful company! I was not intending on spreading false information.
I did read Justin's reply, but I also did speak with an official sales rep from the company and I have been told that, at least in my case, those of us who pre-ordered the spec changes (be they upgrades or downgrades) are being given a choice between these two options. (Or simply upgrading at a remarkably low price.)
Again, it is not my intention to spread false or harmful information about the company, and I don't regret purchasing from them because the customer service, IMHO, has been phenomenal.
If the information I've been given is incorrect, I'd love to hear from Justin about the mixup. But, overall, it's not a big deal. It is a slight bummer, but I'm not ticked off and it isn't a deal breaker for me. I'd probably just upgrade if it bothered me too much.
*EDIT*: I could provide the email exchanges, but I'm not trying to prove a point. I really just wanted the advice of all you laptop savvy folks.
If I came off as whiney, I do apologize.
-
No Widi/Sibeam is a deal breaker for me. Absolutely no point in waiting for the 3D model which is released in November when Sandy bridge with integrated graphics and Optimus is released late 2010 or early 2011...
-
And dont forget that Intel will be releasing new SSDs for laptops Q4 2010 and Q1 2011. 300 GB SSD, yes please
-
When can we expect to see Asus laptops with Sand Bridge BTW?
-
This is not a guarantee though, i feel they have no interest atm on doing it, they could have released a i5 version with it already, specially since the GTX460m could support it, but i dont think they believe its a good asset in high end gaming laptops, i wish they would, but i dont see this happening even in sandy bridge, at least on on high end gpus. MSI could also done switchable with their GX640 since it comes with i5 (like they did with their GE600), but but they didnt bother either.
My guess is Q1 2011, but probably might come after the release of desktops, so could go to Q2. -
But what must be done to be able to use the Optimus? Sandy Bridge/Q620m, GTX 460m all support it. Are there any software restrictions? If so, would`nt a simple update from Asus do the trick?
Yes i also wish they could see all the benefits that Optimus have: Less heat, more battery time etc.
From several sites on the internet they say that Sandy is ahead of schedule and could be with us this year. Intel's Sandy Bridge CPUs to arrive ahead of schedule, could be with us this year -- Engadget
I am just wondering how long it took for Asus to release a laptop with the I7 when it was new? Maybe there is some similarities between that release and this.. -
That's it, asus, you give me no other opions. I'm gonna hold my breath until you release it!
-
I'm still waiting for Asus to release the G53. My current laptop is so old that even my grandmother commented on how slow it is. It's time for asus to release the G53 already and then we can start speculating about future technology.
-
I agree, I haven't been anxious for anything I've ordered in a long time but I'm ready to get a new laptop. The one I'm working on is by no means a slouch and is still fairly speedy for being 3 years old, but its time for a replacement.
Plus, once I get the new computer I can use it at home and keep the current system at work, which will mean less to lug around during my commute. -
did asus ever think that someone might be getting a gaming laptop for something other than gaming? im crossing my fingers that they got excited about sandy bridge and reneged on all of these upgrades and are going to do a massive refersh in january. heres to hoping...
-
I was ready too. With Civ 5 coming out soon and Diablo 3 coming out one of these days, not to mention the backlog of games I'd like to try like Dragon Age, SC2, etc - I am done waiting.
The key is to pull the trigger, then like Keyser Söze, vanish from the boards (e.g stop reading about laptop technology) until you are ready for the next plunge. I am sure the machines people are looking at now, like the G53/73 and MSI 660 will keep their owners happy for a while. I actually like buying old games since they are a lot cheaper, its just now my laptop is straining to run even old games. -
It's a minor downgrade for DX9 and 10 but an upgrade for 11. So in the long run, as more games are DX11 friendly, it will be an upgrade. Majority of my games are DX11 ...well, and some of the old Command & Conquers, but it's nothing to get upset about if the entire 2011 year will be DX11 (for the most part).
Someone was saying last night it's:
-3% in DX9/10
+3% in DX11
Not sure of that data, just passing what I saw on these forums. -
No way to tell. But based on the NotebookCheck's website, using Vantage score, for DX10, the HD5870M under normal OC 800/1100, it's 30% faster.
As for DX11 it depends. The Tessellation on the 460 is better by such a small margin it's not even worth mentioning. If HD5870M can't do tessellation on extreme @ 1080p, the 460M will fail also.
But for DirectCompute, using GPGPU power... HD5870M should swamp the 460M by about two-three times the performance. That's significant.
As for Shader Model 5.0, HD5870M wins again.
So out of the many features of DX11, HD5870M wins in landslide. 460M wins in one for Tessellation... by a margin as said not worth mentioning IMO. -
wait wait wait, you mentioned standard overclocked 5870. are you comparing the real-world tested specs of a moderately overclocked 5870 to a 460's theoretical real-world performance at stock speeds?
-
?? , i am confused
-
Yes, he's comparing apples to oranges. The post is pretty bias. He's marginalizing any advantages the 460m has while over exaggerating the 5870m. I have yet to see any post(german site or notebookcheck) that says the 5870m winning by a landslide. In fact, they look to be running neck and neck with the 5870m ahead by a few percent in non-DX11 games.
I think don't think you can go wrong with either cards and I can't wait to see what this 460m can do. Hopefully, we can overclock it quite a bit but only time will tell. -
And about that 300gb SSD from intel, right now their best SSS is 700 bucks. I imagine a 300 gb ssd to be like 1000. Ssd is just way too expensive right now to consider for me. It's faster, but trading in a 500 gb drive for a 80 gb drive is just not worth it. And about the 460m, most benchmarks I've seen put it par to the 5870m. I have no idea where you see your 30% increase and the 5870m winning in everything by alot. It's slightly better in dx10 in some post, sometimes it's equal, but the 460m was down right the victor in the notebookcheck benchmarks for dx11.
-
You could say he is comparing the 460m so hist particular H5870m. I can simpatize because I personally run the GPU quite overclocked with no issues, but still, both machines on stock will end up being the same. The 460m is no more than a 285m in DX9 and DX10 anyways. Whic is pretty much on the same level as HD5870m. And well, it should be, considering the 460m is the rival of the HD5870 haha.
In the end, they are about the same. Any performance advantage will come from the particular notebook you buy, and how much one can be overclocked. -
Agreed. The 30% increase seems to be rather fictional. All the reviews I've read show the 460m almost on par with the ATI in DX9/10 (ATI beats it by a tiny bit) and the 460m comes out superior in DX11. We'll have to wait for more data, b/c there just isn't enough yet. Give it a couple weeks.
Also, I wouldn't touch SSD's b/c the price is just too damn high >< -
Read somewhere (Anandtech?) that ssd memory is coming down in price at the end of this year to about a dollar per GB, or so they say. hope it is so.
-
******** EH, Gentech show the G73jw in stock! Arg!
-
Spam refresh! F5 is your friend
-
good news everyone, today we are going to be delivered g73jw
-
does anyone know why the g51 has a intel centrino 6300 and the new jw's dont?
-
Yeah like swburton, I've seen a few sources stating the the new Intel SSD's will be much much cheaper. I can't remember exactly, but my a 300gb for similar prices to the current 80gb? or maybe it was 160gb price.
I think these dual drive laptops are the perfect opportunity to run 80Gb SSD OS +750GB for storage. You can always buy external drives, or setup a HDD farm like I did
Once you use an SSD on Operating system you wont ever want to go back, my load times in games are next to nothing thanks to my Intel G2.
-
just curious, how would you use a dual drive - ssd, hard - effectively? programs on ssd, music and movies on the hard drive?
-
So let me see if I'm reading this correctly and please correct me if I'm wrong. XoticPC is backing out on their word and not honoring the 8GB as promised earlier? That is, letting their customers choose between 8GB ram + 500GB HDD downgrade or a 6GB ram downgrade (stock) + 750GB HDD stock?
-
If it is truly wireless HDMI it supports HD/LPCM audio. If not, you can always buy a nice long 1.4a spec cable from monoprice (or bluejeans).
No WiDi from the get go though and don't be fooled by the crappy sub. I've checked it out in stores and my PortaPros are more bassy. For the G53, I'm using my Energy RC-Micro over HDMI for audio.
Oh and there is an ExpressCard slot on the front right-side of the American unit.
Maybe, if you aren't that lazy you'll find it (hint: check support for the English manual).
Btw, THX TruStudio is software based and sound card supported and runs on both models. So no need to buy those Logitech G35s!
lol I say that about lenovos all of the time; I like lenovos though.
I'm happy about the 6GB, my Mushkins won't go to waste.
Pretty much, or at the least, that's how I do it. You can buy a SSD now if you're in season. They pretty much saturate the SATA II spec. -
OS, programs, games, whatever you want to run fast on the limited space on the SSD. everything else on the hard drive. personally, i think another great use for an ssd is a render drive for all you photoshop/vegas/aftereffects/etc. people. really would be awesome for those time pressed works, just transfer it to the hdd later when you've done what you needed with the rendered work.
-
Using your Ramdisk (scratch drive) is better/faster for this, hence the 16GB, but that's a personal choice.
Oh, in case anyone missed it. The G53, at the least, comes with a ExpressCard slot! TV tuner glory. -
true.
also, this is a question for paladin44 (powernotebooks.com), why exactly does powernotebooks only offer the 500gb momentus xt.....I'd much rather have the 320gb to save costs on my end, heh. -
Why the heck is ETA on the G53JW so vague? Gentech says it's 8/21, XoticPC (the one i preordered from) says "late September to early October"...
I mean, if the G73JW just came out, it's only a matter of time for the G53 to finally come out already! and, where do we get real ETA on it? -
When did you order from xoticpc?
-
Sept 05, why? errrr... did i preorder too late or what?
-
The numbers from Ken and Justin are consistent with the Notebookcheck. Check the GPU score on vantage since the CPU score will be higher (820QM). But I do not think 460M will be a waste, but considering it is 20% larger than the HD5870M and seem 20% more expensive, it is a September, 2010 release compared to a November, 2009 (HD5870M architecture unchanged), 460M SHOULD be faster.
-
As far as I know G51 does not come with 6300 wireless card.
You mean 09/21? that's N53JQ.
G53JW ETA is end of September.
-
Lol Ziddy our resident ATI defender and destroyer of all things Nvidia
...
Why do i get the feeling Ziddy wears a shirt that says "I hate Nvidia with every fiber of my being" ...
Its all good Ziddy im just pokin at you and you certainly make some valid points about the numbers because after all they dont lie in the end...
We still need to give the 460 a chance ? even if its a wee one
..
-
Well I think the fact the 460M is a newer release, going from GF100, to GF104 and the 460M is a GF106, revamped... And it costing more, I think speaks for itself. Nvidia should have stepped up and offered a better performing GPU than what AMD offered nearly a year ago.
- Having these G73jw/G53jw buyers waiting for over half a year for this, and this is what they get for their long wait? I'd be a little upset if I had waited this long for a G73jw.
But yeah, I'll stop bashing the 460M in this thread, I've already said enough as is. But the numbers from Ken and Justin haven't changed any of my initial predictions. -
I totally agree that the 460m should have been atleast a hair faster if nothing else then the 5870 but after seeing the overpriced and under purchased 480m i am not surprised it was not ...
Again though in time im sure we will see with drivers the margins of stock vs stock cards close the gap even tighter to a degree ...
They are both good choices though and soon if someone wants a G73 at all they will have to get the Nvidia card or nothing and the machine is great with both of them in there...
I still dont agree with the price hike of B1 or the JW because its got a 740QM though, seeing as intel charges the same amount for the 740 as they did the 720 but oh well im not surprised because of the popularity of this machine they know they can get it .. -
My guess, Asus raised the price because they were forced to raise price on the other G73 variant due to Nvidia and to try to lead customers to the JW model, this is what they did.
But agreed, should be faster. You don't wait for slower, you wait for faster.
Now that people know more about PhysX, it's not a big issue. I don't think there will be many more big name PhysX games anymore. Once Havok and Bullet are underway using DirectCompute, that will be the end of PhysX forever.
3D Gaming, 460M doesn't seem to be really all that viable. If it's chugging around 30-40 FPS for single image, what's it going to do for two images for 3D?
In the end you are just left with pretty much a more expensive, but slightly slower HD5870M... Hopefully the 120 hz screen will be a blaze of glory to make this wait worthwhile. Although Asus improvement on cooling maybe worth the wait in itself. -
That's what I got from the post too. I would be furious as a customer and QQ up a storm
As for the graphics cards, I think I've read at least 50 posts about Nvidia VS Ati in the last 24hrs LOL. Don't graphics cards improve overtime? Can't really compare a stock card that just came out in the last 24 hours to a card that's been driver supported/improved for a year
-
Since you want to use Justin's benchmarks:
ASUS G73JH -A1/-A2 Review & Benchmarks - XOTICPC Forums
XOTICPC Forums
GPUSCORE: 6612 vs 7501
Either you are over-exaggerating or seriously terrible in math. 7501-6612= 889 not 2000. That's roughly 12% difference not 30% or 20%.
Now, if you are comparing OC vs Stock, it's like I said before "apples vs oranges" We have no idea how well the 460m will OC.
And here's a quote from notebookcheck:
The complete article and benchmarks are here:
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M - Notebookcheck
Nowhere does it show the 5870m winning by a landslide or destroying the 460m. Perhaps you should follow your own medicine and actually provide links to benchmarks of actual games that agree with your wild statements.
Finally, the 460m may be estimated to cost more than the 5870m but the Asus G73JH-B1 and G73JW cost the same. We, the consumers, are not paying a dime more. -
As for driver support yes you can. Nvidia has had more than enough time to optimize driver support. The GF104 etc were announced back in March. No excuses, none at all.
Anyways, XoticPC still advertises 8GB, 1TB HDD on their site. But if you order you are getting 6GB and only one 500 GB HDD?
Asus G53, the smaller version of the G73jh
