How about naming it 'Hippo stronghammer'..........![]()

This is also my concern!
I've recently been screwed around severely by Alienware/Dell and am currently negotiating a refund for my 2nd faulty Alienware Area-51 m15x:

With the money I'll hopefully get back from Alienware/Dell, I'll be looking into getting a new laptop and the ASUS G53jw looks perfect!
Here's a rough dimension + weight comparison:
Alienware Area-51 m15x: 369 x 272 x 33mm @3.2kg
ASUS G53jw: 391 x 297 x 50mm @3.6kg
ASUS G73jw 415 x 320 x 59mm @3.85kg
(I've only listed the thickest part for ASUS)
Someone mentioned that the G73 uses the same keyboard as the G53 which explains the small 2.4 cm difference in width.
However I'm starting to wonder whether I should get the g73 which isn't that much larger, suck-it-up and get the g53 with a new bag or even ever get my refund at all from Alienware/Dell... -

Hahaha
I agree I am also very excited for it. Hopefully very soon! I think our ASUS rep is sick of us asking status of it every time we speak.
-
Yah Madrabbit I was thinking about the G53jw too till I got looking at the dimensions. There isn't alot of difference in size so i'm going to go for the G73jw. It will be my first 17" laptop but I'm willing to give it a try. I've got a Dell xps m1530 now so I'll probably go into shock when i get this beast...
-
It's around a inch smaller all around except for the height.
It's not significantly smaller but....it is large for a 15" laptop. -
One important thing to keep in mind with the Asus G serie is that the SCREEN is 15 inches, not the laptop. On a regular laptop the screen is attached to the back of the unit thus making the unit the same size as the screen but the Asus G serie has a wide exhaust at the back of the screen to help with the cooling thus the laptop is a good 1-2 inch bigger than the size of the screen.
-
soon, very very soon indeed, .......I hope!
-
How come I have never seen any ASUS laptops coupon codes for $XX.xx off or percentage off? EVER? Dell has them, sony, acer, HP, heck even Alienware! I know the prices Asus sells at are competitive in the market! but still, prices are always competitive.
-
15 inch laptops are so uninteresting
-
So....Bigger is better???
-
indeed!
-
Size doesn't matter =(
-
Says who?
I think the 15" market is getting some great new laptops.
Some people need a little portability and like the smaller form factor, personaly I think the G73 is way to big to be whipping it out everywhere. -
I don't care about the extra inch here and there as long it remains cool. However the m15x I currently have runs hot (80deg-ish) and a lot of users complained about this in the beginning. The simple solution was to take the cover off every 6 months and vacuum the fans+exhausts with a paint-brush. This would drop the temps by at least 20deg.
Now some would say that it should be designed better...especially the problems I have had with my Alienware screen hinges. But in my opinion no heat venting is full-proof. All fans and vent will eventually require dusting off to ensure continued airflow and thus cooling.
It's because their laptops are crap. It's like a rug sale. 90% off $10,000.
It's how 'cool' you are?!
(sorry couldn't resist) -
Mm I think a 17-inch laptop is too large, I prefer a 15 ... but there wasn´t a g53jh
-
If I get it, it will be used a lot for art and animation.
-
That's because Dell (Alienware) purposely overprices their laptops and if the potential customer doesn't buy it with coupons, it's more $ for them. If the customer manages to find coupons, Dell is still making a nice chunk of profit. This gives the illusion that the customer is saving money, but in reality, he/she is not.
-
Does any one have any idea as to when sites like amazon, newegg or avadirect will start selling the G53?
-
I got mine from GenTechPC ...they're shipping in about 1.5-2 weeks.
-
Yeah the M15x is great, no GPU throttling, no crappy touchpad,no HDMI.
It's perfect exactly what I want in a laptop
ASUS laptops might not be for everyone but there are some fans and besides the G73 situation put out some good stuff, like it or not. -
I bought my 17 inch xps in 2006 without ever seeing a 17 inch laptop ( I remember at the time it was hard to find a bag for it so I think 17 inchers were just getting started then. It felt gynormous - way too big to whip out on a plane or in a business meeting. Now I'm getting the g53 w/o ever having seen one and these posts are making me wonder if it also might be too big? I do think even an inch less width makes a difference on a plane though.
-
You say Gentech is shipping in about 2 weeks? That means other places can't be too far behind, right?
As for cool designs on laptops, that is actually what kept me from purchasing other 15" laptops on the market. Gaudy LEDs, ridiculous designs on the cover... Sure, it's cool for some, but I was hungering for a simple, sexy design that wouldn't dazzle the person sitting across from me with blinking lights. Though the names are pretty sweet... Widow? Venom? I could see those names producing some sexy laptops, alright.
Many companies focus on how the exterior of the laptop will look, but what about the part we stare at all day? I think if teams focused less on sticking random LEDs on the outside and added a bit of flair on the inside, I'd be down. I actually took the time to customize my own vaio online just to see how it would look. A white outside, then a bright blue keyboard... ooooh Yeeeeah.
The design is actually what sold me on the G73, but I wanted something that would give me the illusion of a smaller size, and the G73 was not it. When I gave up and decided to buy it anyway, I discovered the G53. I like to think of the G73 as all muscle, and the G53 as the overweight little brother.
-
Intel confirms both desktop and laptop Sandybridge CPUs will be shipping in bulk as soon as we hit 1st quarter, sweet if G53 got a refresh early Jan
-
Add a 470M GTX to the G53 and Sandy Bridge would be perfect.
-
And Intel G3 SSD
-
And Widi
-
And add in an official release date.
-
And at the time it is announced, all further technological advancements will be halted so there will be no buyer’s remorse or temptation to wait further…
-
You know when I pre-ordered I wasn’t nearly as anxious as I am now. Especially after seeing the various websites list the G73JW as now in stock. I hope the G53s come in soon.
-
We waited this long a few more weeks won't kill you...lol
-
Please don't say "a few more weeks" ...LOL
That's a real downer lol
We got approximately 1.5-2 weeks left guys. -
I'm going to hold you to this prediction, Voodooi.
-
Isn't that a few more weeks?
This post is going to explode once people get their laptops. -
Meh, 2 weeks = 'couple', 3 weeks = 'few'
And indeed it will - I see G53JW spams erupting like a volcano! muhahaha!
Is it bad that I have my smartphone's e-mail refresh set at 5 minutes and each time it blinks, I think It's Ken's (GenTechPC) UPS tracking number? ROFL ...You should see my disappointed face when I check it, only to find it's Viagra spam LOL -
What online stores are taking pre orders for the G53? and are they already backed up? if i were to pre order one, would I still get some fromthe first wave, or not likely??? how many is gentech and xotic supposed to be getting at the first wave? a few hundred? or more like a dozen or 2?
-
what, it hasn't already? we've been rambling for 50 PAGES ever since the last real confirmed update we made ourselves using outside sources we hunted down, lol.
-
I can just imagine the first user review!
-
This is more or less how the 460m vs HD5870 battle will be.
The Desktop GTS 450 vs HD5770. Slight differences being reduced clocks for both cards, and 3GB/s more memory bandwidth for nvidia card.
I want to see how 460m compares to GTX 285m. Old G92 core still rocks! -
It's a VERY popular system, so pre-order it fast!
GenTech is still listed as "Late September", so I assume that if the first batch of pre-orders were sold, the 'date' would get updated on the website. You can always e-mail Ken and ask him personally: [email protected] -
Check this out guys

That just shows me the CPU got a better score GPU score is the same.
Great improvement but not sure what to read of this...and why are the clocks on GPU-Z all crazy high? -
That could be the GPU-Z version 0.44 not reading it correctly.
-
Curiouser and Curiouser...........!
when will this game of cat and mouse end?
-
So how many people pre-ordered?
It would be interesting to see how many members jumped on board. -
I pre-ordered about ten minutes after it went up. Stock settings + 160gb solid state drive, and was lucky to get the 8gb of ram honored by the vendor.
Patiently waiting for the new system. My current and previous laptop were both Asus models and they held up very well, I'm on a F8sn right now with a geforce 9500m and it still handles everything I need it to do. That said I'm very much looking forward to the upgrade - the increased resolution will help me a lot with the photo editing I need to do for publications, and the extra screen real estate is great in mmo's where the UI tends to cover >20% of the display. -
I have. I did mine the day before the RAM adjustment so I’m wondering how many people might be in line in front of me.
My current Sager system is doing very well, but this will still be a very nice upgrade. -
Aren't the G73JW's due for delivery on 16th?
-
Does anyone have a link to any side by side images of a G73 and a G53? Would like to visually compare. Thanks.
-
I pre-ordered the Sunday before the ram change and the HDD upgrade, so, about 2 weeks ago? Maybe a little less.
I heard the G73s were slotted for release on the 16th, too -- I remember, because I was thinking about canceling the G53 and grabbing the G73 instead. (I need a computer for work pretty badly, and my netbook is driving me bonkers.) But, I decided to hold out. I hope it finds it's way home soon.
The only thing I'm concerned about it missing work to pick it up. I didn't want to go through the work to have it delivered to the office so, I'm going to have to plan accordingly! -
There's about nine+ pictures on GenTechPC for each but I don't think there's a picture of them side by side yet, since resellers don't even have the unit in hand to handle that request. Unless you wanna pull out a ruler and use the measurements on the site
......
I'm gonna give Asus sales team a call and see if they can give exact dates yet (rofl)
Asus G53, the smaller version of the G73jh
