I think we've talked about this before and I know I've read up on it in the past, but I think I've gotten myself a little confused and forgot some details. I know the G53 3D can play 3D on the laptop monitor, that's a given... but is the normal G53 able to play 3D on a 3D ready external monitor? The answer is yes, right?

I'm not going to make the switch to the G53-3D because, well, I feel like I'm getting a much better deal on the normal one (with the upgrades I've added on to it via XoticPC) and not getting 3D in any way, shape, or form isn't going to bother me. But it was something I thought I'd ask because... well, I forgot the answer to it, haha.

I dig the option Gentech has with the WASD keys lit up a different color... that looks mighty helpful! I wonder if I can get Ctrl Z buttons to have their own color. BRIGHT RED. Haha, I'm just kidding.

So what is the first game you all are going to fire up once you get your system, not for testing it, but actually playing and enjoying,- For me it is
    Modern Warfare 2

I too like the WASD keys lit up that GenTech has, its nice to have
But will it have a option to turn it off ?
or lit up without the full keyboard litup too

Is the Wireless HDMI like a builtin button ?
with a box to hookup onto our TV

Or its a gadget we can use on any laptop ?

    Thanks

No you can't control the color of the lights only if you want the keyboard backlit or not.Once you choose any colored light configuration the only way to change the color is to remove the color film they use to change the lights in the first place.
Not exactly sure on the wireless HDMI but pretty sure that's the way it works, it will probably only work with ASUS since it's there version(WIDI?)

definitely starcraft 2, it is the game that drove me off to buy a new laptop.
And surprisingly, after I pre-ordered my G53, my old laptop begins to die off slowly....screen will sometimes rarely fade into plain white and needs to shake to make it work. Going extremely hot but won't shut down to prevent damage to hardwares etc

never known how addictive starcraft can be...
and I thought dota was bad enough :p

I got the word the new expected release date is 10/18. I am getting concerned about waiting this long. What are the best alternatives to the G53? MSI G660 is one for sure. I really don't want a 17 inch laptop, if anything I'd probably sacrifice some performance to go even smaller than 15 inch. The other thing I am starting to wonder is if this thing slips into November then maybe I should just wait for the sandybridge and other things on the horizon that were discussed earlier...

I feel like waiting this long for a laptop when there is equivalent technology on the market like the MSI is sort of a waste - the G53 technology is already depreciating but I am not getting any use out of it...so either get something now, or wait for the next gen stuff....

I've only recently been following cpu developments (so pardon me if I'm wrong here), but isn't the selling proposition for Sandy Bridge that it integrates dx10 GPU work? (Smaller die and power requirements not withstanding).

My understanding is that Intel are not targeting the high-end discrete graphics hardware needing user with these CPUs, and therefore waiting for one vs. G53 doesn't really make much sense. A high-end ATI/NVIDIA solution is still going to outperform Sandy Bridge which - while an excellent innovation - is aimed at low-mid power users.

Which game am I going to fire up, you ask? Left 4 Dead 2 is a MUST have for me. I'm also going to try again with Silent Hill Homecoming, and I'm going to stick some classics on my machine, too --Half Life 1 and 2 being among them.
Yeah, it's all horror genre for me, it seems...
And, well, you know... anything else that looks remotely interesting. :p

And about my stupid 3D question... I actually found the answer 2 minutes later, so I'm good. Now it's just about figuring out if I want to switch over to the behemoth that is the G73, or stick with the slightly smaller, plumper G53. The way I have the G53 configured, plus my pre-order bonuses, means I'm getting a better deal in many aspects than I would be if I switched to the G73, so paying the extra $$$ would only be for the convenience of having a computer arrive a few weeks earlier. OH, DECISIONS.

Anyway, that's just me rambling, haha. L4D2 is probably the first game I'll be downloading.

The G53JW will handle SC2 on Ultra. Why? B/c I had an MSI i7/5870ati and I played on ultra all the time, and the 460m is practically the same in that respect ;)

I know. Waiting endlessly is a bummer. If you choose you go down the MSI path, make sure you're aware of what you're getting yourself into in regards to the awful warranty handling and phone support ;)

So we got 2 weeks 1 day if it's the 18th ... *tries to wait patiently*

Speaking of Sandy Bridges, I saw a BBC special where it said SB would boot your computer in approximately 5 seconds (getting you to the desktop), which is pretty damn awesome.

The specs sound pretty awesome. I can't wait! How well did SC2 run on Ultra? What resolution were you running it on and what sort of matches did you test it out on (1v1, 2v2, 3v3?) and what sort of framerates were you getting?

The laptop I was using had 1680x1050 resolution (GX740). I only played massive amounts of custom games (team play) like Infested Arena, etc. I prefer RTS PVP on Command & Conquer over SC2 ;) But man, are those 4-6 man team play customs ever fun. I spent a great deal amount of time playing them.

The G73JW's benchmark indicates that SC2 runs at ultra using 1080 resolution, so the G53JW will be okay since it's practically the same.

I wonder how the GTX 460M compares to the desktop version. Every forum/site I've read recommends the desktop version for new computer builds for SC2. If I wasn't reconsidering grad school, I know I'd be building a new desktop around this time.

There's too many factors that make netbooks suck for school:

    - Having 1-5 hours gaps between classes. It's nice to game, compose music, photoshop or anything else that requires a powerful laptop.

    - Being enrolled in a program that requires applications a netbook cannot handle in-class LAB's/lectuers.

    - Head to a friends house near/on campus and LAN it up between or after class.

    :)

I for example, have big gaps between classes and it's nice playing a competitive RTS match teamed-up/versus a buddy while waiting, or starting a Drum & Bass / Deep House composition.

This is all very true, and I went to a design school! However, my school provided us with computers to use when we needed to do a bit of advanced work (beyond word, etc.)
I think a netbook is great for note taking and lectures. I wish I had possessed one when I went to college... that would have been pretty handy! It's long(ish) battery life also provides a sense of assurance in that long breaks between classes will not result in a dead battery.

So, I think both of you are pretty spot on with your laptop vs school requirements. It all depends on your major. :)

Agreed. Can't do netbook cuz even my small azn fingers are too big for a mini10, acer aspire netbook, eeepc, etc. I need something that's at least 13inches to be comfortable. It took me a while to get used to my 14inch dv2610us, even.

So I'm stuck between the G53, GX640 and 660, and the 3820TG currently. E14 has been a real turn off since it's price went up and radiance is a ripoff.

    When's G53 supposedly shipping, anyways?

Oct 18th is the potential date atm.

You're right about the E14. I took a glance at them for a while and they can only handle current games on medium< settings, so it's definitely not future proof. As for the GX640, the screen is just too awful. The GX660R is nice, but then again, it's 100$ more, has less ram, and less HD space. There really isn't anything else to match the G53JW lol

Edit: Ever since HP decided to remove Radiance and make people pay extra $ for it, it's not a computer I'd like to ever deal with.

Boy, you're very agreeable today :) Ever since HP's E14 took a nosedive, I'd begun paying more attention to the 3820TG, which does everything the E14 is supposed to, in terms of CPU+GPU. So truthfully, I'm conflicted between G53 and 3820TG. It's almost double in price for much much more hardware, I understand... but do I really need that much hardware for SC2 or the emulators?

    Hmm,

    # Screen size - 13.3 in - 1366 x 768
    # Processor - Intel Core i5 - 2260 MHz
    # RAM - 4096 Mb
    # Hard Drive - 640 GB
    # Operating System - Windows 7 Home Premium
    # Graphics - ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470

I don't think the ATI 5470 would be good for SC2.

As it stands, that card can only handle SC2 on Low Settings (24 FPS on Medium, which would be a lag fest) :p

Edit: This is for the Acer.

Well, technically, if you added a Bluray player it would come out to $1578, and since the MSI GX660R comes with an additional USB 3.0 port they're about the same. Then again, you get a bag and a mouse with that $1578.

In any case, it's a bundle of awesome. GenTech's got a lot of very attractive machines up for grabs. Or future grabs in the G53's case.

The only issue that i see is the screen... SC2 has a 1360x768 option, which makes it look not as good, its basically cause your not using the monitor native res (1366x768), in my case the main thing that its steering me to move toward a 1600x900 or 1920x1080, which both are true 16:9 res, so they will look great in SC2. I still cant believe that SC2 being a pc game only this limitation favoring 16:9, the game should be scalable without having this kinda issues.

I don't think the Envy 14 was ever worth it. I had a total of 4 of them shipped to me and every one went back due to extremely lazy/sloppy build quality. HP had a chance to convert me with their premium notebooks, and they really blew it in my opinion.

I believe it unfortunately. Blizzard was without a doubt my favorite developer but as a gamer there's no way I can purchase starcraft 2 in good conscience. Its sad, because I really want to play it - but Activision and BK have effectively turned me off any product that comes through their studios.

Hopefully this means that it's not going to get pushed back beyond the 18th. This was just posted on the Asus Facebook page:

    Dear Asus,

Please hurry up and release the G53.

    Thank you very much =]
