Thought laptopmag.com gave was a decent, if not entirely informed view of the G73Jw-A1, and what to most likely expect of the G53:
ASUS G73Jw-A1
This stealth fighter-styled system gets an updated CPU and Nvidia graphics.
-
Verdict
If you're looking for the ultimate gaming system, ASUS's G73Jw-A1 should definitely be near the top of your list, because of its strong performance scores. However, the stiff keyboard holds it back. If you're looking for a gaming system that has a slightly weaker graphics card, but a much better keyboard, touchpad, screen, and speakers, check out the 18-inch Toshiba Qosmio X505-Q890. However, if raw graphics performance is your main goal, the $1,799 ASUS G73Jw-A 1 is a compelling choice.
I like the Asus
Hope the G53 will have better keyboard -
But what if I want raw gaming performance + portability + at least 2 hours of battery + good looks? Will the 3820TG satisfy all those needs, or must I buy the G53 instead
?
-
Oh hai! Good to see you again. So you dumped your E14 eh? You were one of the original persons who made me want one initially. Ya sad to say, HP just doesn't make 'em like they used to. Since the last time we spoke, my dv2610us is still running strong. Hmm... I wonder if Activision joined up with HP?
Anyhoo, SC2 is so-so thus far. It runs okay on my dinodesktop on low settings. I max out at 25fps during gameplay. Average is around 15fps, which is fine for a non-hardcore gamer. However, Bnet is the major disappointment. Lots of stuff missing, as I'm sure you're already aware.
What did you decide to replace your E14 with, and did you get your cash back? -
I seriously would not recommend any acer laptops...
bad in terms of durability, they have bad cooling performance (one of my high school fd told me that his 15inch acer blew out sparks of fire from the exhaust vents
)
and also they tend to last very short...
I would avoid any product from Acer all together, it does have an extremely bad reputation from users
alienware m11x seems like a much better option for you -
I thought the system itself had the potential to be great. My gaming needs aren't too major and I like the form factor an style of the notebook a lot (although I suspect the video card is pretty weak for SC2). The radiance screen was overrated in my opinion, but the resolution was nice in a 14'' laptop. I had a suite of problems in the units I received. One had a busted hinge that would scrape against the frame whenever I opened or closed the system. Another had a screen defect that caused a large circular area to have a greenish tint. A third came with huge scratches/gouges across the trackpad. Eventually I decided that HP couldn't live up to my quality standards so we decided to part ways.
I've had the G53 on pre-order since the day it went up : ) Its a bit bulkier than I would like, but the resolution and processor will do what I need it to. I also opted for a SSD and was lucky to pre-order when the system was listed with 8g of ram, which the retailer is honoring.
I did get my cash back for the Envy, and I have to say I found HP's customer service department to be exceptional on all levels. All of my replacement systems arrived quickly, and my refunds were processed promptly. I actually even made a little bit of money on the process, they offered me cash back because of the problems I was having, yet still refunded me the full amount of the system when all was said and done. -
There is a good chance the G53 will have the very same keyboard.
I love the keyboard on my G73 -
And what the same performance for 300 less? G53!!!
-
I don't have a lot of experience on ACER but I can talk to the one I purchased a few years back. It was my first dive into high performance laptops. While the performance was great (at first), the cooling issues mentioned above were insane. At one LAN party we actually cooked chicken kabobs off the exhaust vent as the temps coming out of the machine were in excess of 180 degrees. (I'm not kidding.....very tasty chicken if i remember correctly).
This machine lasted me a little over 18 months and went through 3 GPUs during that time.
I don't know if this was/is the rule with ACER but it was my experience... -
I have an acer right now. (My netbook.) My roommate at the time was all about the Acers, and he seemed to know what he was talking about because he could find his way around his machines. Little did I know, however, that he knew his way around only because of all the times he had to repair his crappy Acer machines! Haha.
My netbook has saved my skin a lot of times, but to be honest, I want to chuck it out a window. ):
Then again... it IS a netbook so... maybe that is the real reason the performance sucks. But why can't Acer make a netbook that can surf the net? I have such a hard time connecting to anything anywhere!
Anyway, g53, come soon! -

Another update guys...... Now pushed back until 10/21 and it is going to be a small shipment.
Next shipment after that is 2nd week of November, and this is expected to be a healthy shipment.
-
\o/ muaaahahaha!!! my plans for G53 global evisceration is working!
-
Lol, great, just when I decided to bite the bullet. I don't know about this anymore, I was really needing it before the end of october. DAM YOU ASUS...
Is there any way that Xoticpc can inform me if my order has a chance of being processed in the first wave, according to the number of orders before mine. Even a crude estimate of units arriving around the said " 10/21/10" would help. Or getting info like that even possible?
I've already spoken with Hutsady thru live chat and he/she was very helpful, but also was not able to predetermine how many units would come in within the first wave. I just need at least a bad estimate at best
, so I can know if I will have to cancel my order or not since I will need a laptop by the end of this month...
-
Justin@XoticPC Company Representative
Since QTY's are not confirmed at this time we will not know who goes into what shipment until they arrive at ASUS and allocation is divided up.
-
what BS... hey justin, is there a similar laptop to the G53 with same guts i can get instead? i'm sick of the delay, i don't care if its an MSI or whatever, is there another lappy with GTX 460m and i7 740m and with similar configuration that i can get?
-
Yea I figured this much, I don't know why I even asked, thanks for the reply. I was just having a mild anxiety attack.
I'll just wait and see...wait and see. *veins bulging* -
What was your pre-order date Spyral? Mine is listed as 9/1 so that you can tell if at least one person is in front of or behind you.
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
The Sager NP8690, but it doesn't have a lot of the other features of the ASUS G53JW-A1.
Remember that the wait is always agonizing, but you will have it for a long time and once you get it you will soon forget how long it took. Don't sacrifice the backlit keyboard, 4 memory slots, 2 hard drive bays due to impatience. -
Justin@XoticPC Company Representative
I agree with all of you. A good alternative is the GX660R-060 which has FULL HD, Dual HDD, Good Video Etc. The 8690 is a good match but lacks many features, like Dual HDD, Backlit keyboard, 4 Ram Dimms etc...
Unfortunately for years we have been going through this on every new release going back to their first G1 Gaming Laptop.
-
well, if there's a small shipment on Oct 21, and i preordered on Sept 05, does that mean i may be the lucky few to get one out of the small shipment?
-
You're all misinterpreting Justin. He means the first shipment will be of 100,000 G53s, however they will all be much smaller than usual, about 2" wide and 1" deep. XoticPC will be shipping them with Razer(R) branded tweezers to play like the pros do.
-
I would consider the GX660-R to actually have more features (sound, more ports, smaller etc.) The only thing that is lacking is modesty with it's ugly gloss and orange.
-
and an actual DX11 gpu.
there's a new MSI model, the GT663 that includes GTX 460m. -
Whats the difference betwenn these two cards ?
which is better to get ?
Intel Ultimate-N 6300 802.11 a/b/g/n Wireless LAN (with 3rd antenna)
Intel Advanced-N + WiMAX 6250 -
Well, the problem that arises with the GT663 is.. No release date, or pricing
!
-
I got my G73JW today (I caved in late last week and switched out my order). I have to say I'm impressed. Sure the G53 would have been an inch or so narrower, but I would have been missing out on a whole lot of screen.
In the end I'm very happy with the choice. The G73JW is incredible. I'd say for those who really want a 15 inch screen, it may be worth the wait for the G53...if you don't want to wait, come on over to the G73 side of the pool..waters warm!
-
MSI GT663 has Raid 0
does that make it more powerful than G53 ?
Need it for Gaming -
15 vs 17inch. I've been used to a 14inch, and my desktop's monitor is only 20 widescreen. I have to say, you're either 7foot tall, dont have azn eyes, or you're sitting very far. 15's PLENTY! I'm down for 15
I remember when I first bought this 20inch monitor--the 4 or so inches on the right side was unused, and I just left the stickers there hahah. HUGEEEEEEEE
-
i caved today and gave up on the g53. after the positive feedback ive heard about the g73, coupled with the increasingly long wait for the 53, i decided to get the 73jw. i spent an extra 150 but hopefully itll be worth it. I could have waited if i hadnt committed my current laptop to be sold this friday. and if i had to wait a month computerless i'd probably kill myself...
-
Why cant you wait? I've been shopping around since April...do you not have another comp to use?
-
ah cool, but i'll rather prefer the 15 inch, it concentrates all that 1080p goodness, making it that more detailed for me...
and i've experienced the G73JH-A1 myself (two f my friends have it)
it's a good laptop, but... it's HUGE dude, imagine carrying it to class everyday, no way.
just wishing for the damn g53 to get here already, but ASUS always find a way to delay it for some reason...
in the meanwhile my overpriced macbook pro works pretty good for dead rising 2 on bootcamp win 7, but it's clearly outdated. Why apple overcharges so much?
i mean, their $2000 laptop is essentially a $1000 pc laptop guts wise. -
Lol ur absolutely right, I bought the top of the line MacBook pro and guess what? It only runs at 2.8 ghz dual core with a crappy nvidia 9600gt, And drumroll..... $2500!!! Got it cause I really wanted to try snow leopard. But sold it, snow leopard was pretty awesome though. Now I'm spending 1500 on a system with probably double everything plus 100 for a 40gb SSd boot drive. I think I get my point across.
-
so, how do we educate people on the fact that people are paying way too much for the weak performance of the macs? is it because of the "ooohhh its shiny" factor?
WE need education on these people... seriously. OR, make apple actually use guts worth their price. -
I'm hesitant to switch over to the G73 because of the fact I'd be spending an extra $100 on less features (though more screen space) and more weight. I'm hoping I'm part of the first shipment (ordered 9/6, verified 9/8) and I think I'm willing to wait.
But I don't think I can take another delay after this. I'm willing to wait till the end of October, though.
Thanks for keeping us informed, Justin.
-
Are you talking about Qty's, cause some guy said smaller dimensions?
-
Justin@XoticPC Company Representative
^ Yes when I said "small shipment" it was referring to the quantity.
-
I think you'll be impressed. The laptop is actually thinner and lighter than I expected. I think the only issue I might have is on airplanes but honestly, my current Sager doesn't do too well on them now days anyhow and the G53 is bigger than this old work horse.
I did a clean install yesterday and left my new system at the office overnight downloading all my games. Hopefully I'll be ready to complete the move over today or tomorrow.
Between the quality of the screen and the size I have to admit that I'm mesmerized by the difference in the G73 and my old system. If the G53 has the same quality screen as the G73 then those holding out will be impressed.
-
who did you order yours from, and how long did it take to get to you?
im getting anxious now that i ordered an in stock laptop lol.
i'll be moving from a g71gx to the g73, so the size shouldnt be to bad for me i guess... unless my final thoughts are "oh my god, its actually bigger than the g71" hahaha. thats good to hear he screen is awesome tho, because that was my main reason for wanting out of my bestbuy g71gx. i didnt mind the 1440 res, but i did mind the terrible color reproduction, low brightness, and terrible viewing angles, even in the laptop sweet spot, it was impossible to see one flat color laid across the entire screen.
-
HAHAHAHAHA!
I think all the delays have drove me insane!
Screw this! This whole situation has completely left a sour taste in my mouth, now besides the first shipments most orders won't be delivered till November! If there are NO more delays.
I'm waiting a few more months and getting a 6000 series ATI GPU with SANDY BRIDGE, WTH I waited this long. *sigh*
Rant is over and good luck to those that get one early.I will still keep a close eye on this thread and will probably change my mind once all the great user reviews start rolling in, that is if there are no more setbacks! -
^ and now new intel solid states will be out in the first quarter as well. just think, 600 gb ssd. there supposed to be half as expensive b/c they are 22nm
-
Does the fan make lot of noice ?
hoping they wont be rattling on my G53
-
While this is problably the smartest, I just couldn't resist, the g73 with the GTX460, probably won't move till next nvidia gen, so its gona be a while.
But the 68XX is still uncertain, AMD is suppose to deliver a press statement on Oct19, but rumors say its only their mid end gpu, the 6870 might go to next year, so could be sometime till we see mobile version of it, and even then with nvidia bearly beating it with the GTX480m, and the GTX460 being lower I don't see much preasure on Amd/ati to deliver a new product with much more performance.
For me was much harder to wait with how crappy sc2 looks at 1360x768 on a 1366x768 screen, the screen doent help + not at native.... simply make me not want to play on my laptop. And probably won't play anything else for a year, so I think it should hold fine. -
For the Love of God lol
can we get a smaller ac adapter for the G53
I know Asus wont give us one
but can we buy a ac adapter like 100Watt
or is the car adapter lighter so can we use that
for long periods of time working on the laptop ? -
I ordered through Powernotebooks.com (Donald). I made the switch official late last Thursday and they shipped on Monday. considering that I did a repaste and hard drive swap this was pretty darn good. It was also all set up and ready to g...almost made my sad to to format and start over but I wanted me features on Ultimate that this version of Win7 didn't have.
So far the only time I have heard the fan was when running benchmarking tools and even then it was pretty quiet. In fact it makes the same amount of noice as my NC100 notebook cooler that I have my Sager sitting on and I only hear that when I focus on it. -
how many laptops are going out? i understand most of that small shipment is going to the first preorders, but is it likely i can get one if my pre-order date is Sept 05?
one can hope!
-
I'm guessing you and I are near the front of the line (I preordered 9/6) but nobody knows how many each company is getting for the first wave of shipments.
I don't think Asus has really told anybody.
Here's to hoping we receive some clarity soon, though.
-
ah good, i better get it on oct 21, if not, i'm canceling my order.
-
I ordered on September 5th.
11 more days guys
-
I'm not too sure it works that way -- Will the resellers be the ones receiving it on Oct. 21, or will they be shipped to us on Oct. 21? Either way I know I'm in for at least another week wait before I get it because of my changes -- a repaste, another HDD, a better wireless card, a blu ray player and an extra 2 gigs of ram -- plus the possibility of getting a color change on my back lit keyboard (Waiting on UPDATED PHOTOS that were rumored to be posted some time this week before I send my decision to Verifications!) because I get the feeling white might hurt my eyes.
I'm just hoping, praying, wishing that I get this thing before Halloween weekend. I'm entering a competition in November and will need a machine for it, and every day I lose in November lessens my chances of having a great product. TT-TT I wish I could take my work computer home with me! But if it doesn't make it in time despite being a part of the first shipment, it's my fault for having so many alterations.
I quit looking at other laptops, though... there is no point, there isn't any other laptop I want. If anything, I'll look at building my own PC instead, but I'm hoping the unicorn of fate is on my side and I'll get my laptop soon. -
Ugh, the 21st? I read it was October 18th they would start to ship (in pre-order priority). Another 3 day delay? Ahhh!
I'm going to wait no matter what because there really isn't anything else out that's good enough in the 15.6" department, because I know with my luck, if I were to get the 660R, it would break down and the MSI repair center would tell me 5 weeks again lol.
Asus G53, the smaller version of the G73jh
