    Where did you read this?
Justin just informed us about it being delayed another few days, with a tiny shipment at that. But I'd love to read wherever you got your info, it might give me hope. :D

I ran up and down the stairs overwhelmed from seeing the US $ at .992 yesterday. Tried ordering last night but a few muck ups occurred, so I'll try again tonight.

Yeah it's pretty good, I didn't think I would live to see the day when it was on par with the U.$.

Have you worked out the overall costs of shipping, GST, customs etc yet?

    Cheers

No but my estimations say, $1550 for my configuration, $160 USPS Express Shipping. = $1710US ($1730 AU @ .99)
    10% tax on item = 10/1730 = $173.
    Processing fee of around $45 i've heard, so $1730 + $173 + 45 = $1948.
Base config would be around $1830

Regardless of all the effort involved, I remind myself that AUS would get the laptop at a later date (I cannot wait)
And will be overpriced to around $2300 i reckon.

Good saving I reckon, it just depends on whether I'm brave enough to order from OS. ;) I will be getting the G73JW anyway as this will become my desktop replacement.

Logical Blue One - ASUS G53JW-A1 have the G53JW-A1 listed on pre order at $2299 for the end of Oct.

    Cheers

I'm pretty sure I read the 18th from Justin's post a week ago, if I'm not mistaken. So since we got an "update" from him again, I guess it's a "few more days" afterall :(

I would have chosen the G73 too, but I am a student so I have to take it everyday, guess my prediction on the G53's pricing was correct :')
    Who are you buying from?

I to am a student (mature age) and figured for the extra $150 or so it would be worth it, not that I can really afford it as I have not worked for three years.

If I buy from OS it will be with one of the well known resellers that frequents here and answers all our questions.

If I buy locally it will be with Logical Blue One, as like the resellers here, he has a really good on line presence. He has the G73JW-A1 going for $2349 or the G73JW-FHD-TZ039V @ $2599 which has the hybrid drives and the Bluray burner. That would be my choice of models except I'm not real sure about the Bluray burner and how practical it is yet for copying and burning.

Given our exchange rate it makes me very tempted to buy from here though and save a few hundred bucks.

    Cheers
    John

Do you have a video or screenshot of SC2 on 1366x760 reso? Kinda curious what it looks like. Cuz currently I'm also considering the 3820TG and the E14 which both have that crappy resolution.

Don't worry anymore, apparently blizzard added the 1366x768 in patch 1.1.1 so there is no more bad looks regarding none native res.

I've decided for my G53 I'm going to chuck the blu-ray in, only a x4 reader though. I've got an Xbox which is pretty much my DVD player for my room, but if I get the bluray drive it means that can be used as a player instead of having the need to buy the full player. As for the burner, I would have no reason to burn bluray, 1. I don't have anything that would be close to bluray format, 2. downloading bluray is too big, our Australian internet plans are quite small compared to the rest of the world :(

    YAY !! 10char

On a different note--do you think resellers would offer a discount to yank out the 8gb ram and put only 4gb? Or @Justin or Ken(1toppc), will there be an option to do only 4gb ram and upgrade something else to make up for it (e.g., blu-ray or extra battery, etc.)?

    Just wondering. Thanks!

Yeah usually when you are replacing to lower specs, you arn't saving much. The upgrade to 8gb is 45$, so i'm guessing it's also about -45$ when you are removing 2gb.

Sorry to double post, but I just did a size comparison between the G53 and the G73 as well as the G50 model.
Seems to me the G73 and G53 are very close in size indeed.
The g50 model however is quite smaller. I feel todays technology is not getting smaller and smaller but rather much bigger.

    Size Easy Laptop Comparison

I know some will have second thoughts but I'm still staying with the g53, I went to bestbuy and looked at the size of the G73Jh, and I compared it to my G50... Huge difference.

I replaced the WD Scorpio Blue in my ultraportable with an Intel 80GB G2 SSD and my battery life went up by almost 40%. But then, we're talking about a computer with an i5-430UM and an 11.6" screen with integrated Intel HD graphics.

This is a known issue with the HM55 chipsets. With a couple of registry tweaks you can get much better performance from the SSD but at a cost of a bit of CPU throttling (turbo boost speeds not fully attainable). There is a thread on this in the Hardware section (SSDs). Intel has been pretty much mute about this issue. I suspect because they don't want to alter the power-savings features of the chipset. Newer IRST drivers can help a bit too. Use ver. 9.6 or higher to get TRIM on your SSD.

Oh, and be advised, TRIM will NOT work on SSDs configured in Raid 0, but any non-raided SSDs in the system can use TRIM. Supposedly, Intel is working on a fix for this.

If you ever plan on using Linux, get an Intel wi-fi card. I have the 6200 in my ultraportable and it's great. It was only about $23 from Amazon and the reception is really good and it's a dual-band card... so, if you have a dual-band router you can get some great speed for streaming and file transfers.

Personally, I'll never use another Atheros or Broadcom wireless card. And the worst of all are the RealTek cards. For compatibility and reliability, stick with Intel. (No, I don't work for Intel or even own any of their stock.)

I can tell you from personal experience that if you don't know how to apply that paste at exactly the right thickness you're going to be very disappointed with the results and you could cause irreversible damage to your laptop (not to mention voiding the warranty).

I wouldn't trust applying thermal paste to anyone but a pro, or at least to someone I can hold accountable for it if they don't do it right (OEM or reseller).

    Atheros. Grumble.

I have Atheros in my nettybook, and it is has caused me more than enough headaches. I hate how slow the connection is, if there even IS a connection... and I can be right by my router. My roommates? They have no problem connecting. I just don't understand it.
I have to repair/reboot my connection every ten minutes on good nights.
So, when it came to buying the G53, I made sure to replace the wifi card! No atheros, not ever again, not if I can help it.

As far as the thermal paste goes, My computer always ran a bit hot, so when my roommate lathered the innards of the thing up, it certainly helped for awhile. Poor thing still died, though. :(

It's the 750GB 7200rpm hard drive shortage, same situation happened to N73NQ-A1 with 750GB 7200rpm, they had to canceled the N73JQ-A1 production and come out with N73JQ-A2 with 500GB 7200rpm Hard Drive.

If they can get enough quantity of 750GB 7200rpm for G53JQ-A1 they can release it sooner.

is that behind all the delays? Why can't they just release it to resellers barebones to custom configurations sooner? Not everyone is going to always opt for the 750gb 7200 rpm drive...

I dont think that causing the delays though, the XA1 is coming with those drives, so they already using them. Although they could be very limited, i havent seen any 750gb 7200rpm drives on the market, i guess manufacturers get first dibs on them.

Yeah could be they just can't get enough quantity of 750GB 7200rpm drive, they may already produced a small quantity of G53JW-A1 but waiting for more shipment of the hard drives. that explained why they discontinued N73JQ-A1 and shipped A2 instead.

There haven't been any delays since Asus never published an official release date. All they've had were estimates based on the contracts they've had with individual component manufacturers. I'm guessing production just went a little slower than expected.

Sorry completely OT but just got to let off steam at the moment. I may have blown my chances of a new G53/G73 as I have just been picked up on a traffic violation and on the spot fine of $370.

Because I have a bike rack attached to the back of my vehicle the officer claims that it is obstructing my number plate from the view of red light / speed cameras.

I'm not happy, I think I'll fight it in court.

I'll get back on topic now.

    Cheers

    Hi,

Thing is according to the letter of the law I have broken it and ignorance is not an excuse. I have no qualms with the fact that the law has been broken, my beef is with the fact that supposedly it's blocking the view of my number plate, which I clearly think it's not otherwise I would not have had it on.

Lets just say I'm in the second half of my life and have never had any type of infringement for speeding or anything in my 40 odd years of driving. The officer did not even offer me the chance of removing it then and there which I could have, and he did not even batter an eyelid when I told him I was a full time student. He was just more interested in issuing the on the spot fine and maintaining his daily quota.

Sorry for my cynicism but its times like this when I wish they were out doing some real police work rather than revenue raising. Likewise I'm not police bashing here because we would be lost without them, and it would be a thankless and gut wrenching job at times. I'm sure he was only doing his job, even though he broke the law himself to catch up with me to issue the fine.

Again my apologies people I don't mean to be OT but this has already helped me to form my defence. ;)

    Cheers
    John

Omg I got pulled over by 2 cops yesterday for going 59 in a 50 zone. Thankfully they didn't have their radar guns so they just wanted to see if I was drunk or something...

    Gata drive careful....

johnmw1.... if you choose to fight it in court, you can schedule it for a year from now. So start saving, I don't think you'll be screwed.

If I had to guess. Design finalization.

We've never seen live photos of the G53 after the CES 2010.

All the hardware is readily available.

Also, for the people who ordered the 3d version of the G53... it's coming after the A1 model... so :(

Which means around November for us

I live in Vancouver BC. Anyways, the local vendors are taking preorders for two G53 models: A1 and XR1. What are the differences between the two?

You Canadians get another version... I'm thinking it's like the best buy versions, they offer medium specs for a great price.

I looked it up... I searched "g53jw-XR1" and i saw the webby, there seems to be no difference so far because they didn't finalize it.

I just noticed NCIX has listed the G53jw on there site.
NCIX put the G73JW only a couple of days before they had them in stock.
So I wonder if they will be getting G53's in this week?

Since there's so many--of all the places I can purchase this, and have it shipped to Cali, which is the cheapest option/reseller?
