Ahh--good choice. FS/No tax! Woohoo!

Will the battery life change in any way with the G53, compared to the g73?
The specs are the same, the only differences are the smaller screen and the lack of a sub-woofer.
I have dual hdds so unfortunately that makes it worse.
Also, I see alot of people switching to the intel 6200 wifi cards, is the base model really bad? I hear a lot complain about it. -
right now my dual HDD setup is this:
primary drive: 120GB OCZ Sandforce SSD
Secondary drive: 1TB 5200 RPM HDD...
i'm looking for a faster RPM drive for my secondary...
but XoticPC says they do not have 750GB 7200 RPM drives in stock, even though it is offered as the default drive for a stock G53...
What's going on here? -
Wait, so if the 750gb hdd is not available, what can I get instead? I don't wana pay an outragous 500+ for the SSD... I need space more than anything.
-
drives in the laptop come from asus not xotic. maybe xotic doesn't stock those drives as an addon to the laptop
-
Oh that's true, xotic doesn't have them as a secondary hdd option because the main drive comes actually from asus!
Nice thinking. -
Hi
I want to know is it worth getting the SSD drive for primary drive ?
or is this good enough -
500GB (w/ 4GB SSD Memory) Seagate XT 7200RPM NCQ Hybrid 32MB Cache (Serial-ATA II 3GB/s)
I mean the performance difference is double or just 10/20% ?
Try to understand if its worth it ?
Want it for Gaming -
From what I understand, the gfx card is far more important in terms of loading than an ssd.
-
If I get a laptop with anything other than an Intel wireless card I get rid of it (the card) and get the latest Intel card. This assures me Linux compatibility and a reliable card with good sensitivity, range and filtering out of interference.
In my experience all the others are 2nd rate. Broadcom isn't too bad but forget Atheros and RealTek is the worst.
As for SSDs, there are some studies that suggest an SSD can improve framerates due to much faster loading. I have an SSD in my ultraportable and it's made a real difference. I don't buy into the hybrid drive thing (Momentus XT). If you're going SSD, go all the way and get a full SSD and leave the spinning platters behind (except for storage). With the SSD, my little ultraportable is lighter, cooler, faster and has better battery life. I don't regret spending the extra $$$. -
35$ for the upgrade isn't too bad, I was gana do it myself, but why risk it.
Thanks -
I think I paid about $23 for my 6200 card from Amazon (+ shipping). On my Acer 1830T it was very easy to change out the card. Took all of 3 minutes. Just be sure you've already downloaded the Intel PROset Wireless drivers first if you don't have an ethernet connection.
-
hmm, that's pretty cheap, I'll do that. Might as well use my amazon prime trial as much as possible before it's gone.
Thanks! -
Sorry if this question has been answered before, but is the G53 meant to be a replacement for the G51?
-
Is 6200 card upgrade be worthy enough for it's price? I don't have any idea on this one. Please help. I maybe getting either the G73JW or G53JW.
What other upgrade should you guys recommend with either of the two units?
Thanks in advance.
Duke -
Should be, as the G73 replaced the G72, the G53 should replace the G51/G60.
Asus strenght imo is that the packages are fairly decent and prices are good also, but upgrading is way to expensive as these are pre assemble setups. That said, there are a few things that imo are worth it, the intel 6200 is cheap so no brainer for me, i have had really bad experiences with atheros cards in 3 different laptops, and none with intel, so to me its worth it, weather or not atheros works flawless or better than intel is not something that i want to see. CPU imo are too expensive to be worth it, maybe an ssd but this upgrades you can also do them later on, its just takes some screwes out and install the new drive, i would probably do it on the G53JW, as it only comes with 1 hdd, this would mean that even though the laptop comes with 2 drive slots, it will probably be missing the hdd bracket for the 2nd drive, and being new, might be hard a hold of one, so they probably will have some. -
Hi Abula,
Thanks for your inputs. I might consider this upgrade, intel 6200, if I will purchase either of the two. And put two HDD already so I don't have problems when I need to upgrade the primary with an SSD later on, as this will have already the needed hdd bracket for the 2nd drive.
Thanks again.
Duke -
I think the best upgrades would be, 8gb ram, 6200, 20 bucks for a bracket, and buy a cheap 40gb SSD for a boot drive and use the 750 it comes with as storage, that's about 1635 including discounts, free shipping and a 100 buck SSD
-
Do they sell the bracket like that?
-
Thanks for the quick reply. I love the way the G53 looks compared to the G51! The color, design and finish look much more professional in my opinion. I hope I can get at least $500 for my current system to help pay for the G53.
-
Yep, asked Ken. There isn't an option on the website though, u have to arrange it.
-
lol, or a 320gb hdd for 35$... and use it for what ever you want and keep the bracket.
-
When I get my G53, I'll do 2 upgrades immediately:
1. A Corsair Nova V128 SSD and,
2. Intel 6200 wireless card.
I've already had an Intel SSD (generation 2) and was disappointed with it because performance degraded rather quickly so I sold it after about 6 weeks.
But an SSD is going to be the best upgrade you can do for performance. I can tell you that from experience. I'm going with the Corsair drive because it was the Editor's Choice on Techreport.com. It is the best "performance per dollar" you can buy right now and Newegg has them for about $220. Here's the chart from the Techreport article:
-
Thanks for posting that, I was looking for just that comparison. Odd that XoticPC does not appear to offer the Corsair Nova drive in the CTO options.
Out of interest does anyone know how many mini-PCIe slots the G53 has inside? I am a newbie when it comes to laptop hardware, but understand this is usually utilized for the WLAN modules afaik. I was curious if you can install a raid controller in there and drive two SSDs off it, as i've seen a couple mini-PCIe raid cards around the net. Or maybe that's just crazy talk :F -
I've owned a LOT of laptops. I don't think I've ever seen an empty mini-PCIe slot. There 's always something using them. As for a RAID controller -- not likely you could do that. Due to space limitations there just isn't any room for "extra" hardware. Your options are really limited for upgrading laptops, hardware-wise.... which is why there are hundreds of models to choose from. Some are customizable by the reseller or OEM to a certain degree. Your best bet would be to talk to XoticPC or GenTech since they allow some customization with the G53s they are offering up for pre-order.

Nobody will know this until it has shipped.
Mini PCIe SATA RAID cards are mostly designed for SFF PCs, I don't think I've seen one that has power for a 2.5" drive. [Edit: Mini PCIe only supplies 3V so there is no way to run a 5V 2.5" drive off of it.] Even then who knows if the option ROM would actually load on the G53 to let you boot off of it or even configure it. Also, why would you run RAID off of a slow PCIe card when you should really be looking for a system with the PM55 chipset instead, that has RAID support on the PCH?
Maybe you forgot to upgrade to the firmware with TRIM support. -
No way. It came with firmware 02HD... the latest. I do my research. But I now think Intel should stick to what they do best: CPUs and chipsets. They hype their SSDs a lot but the competition, I'm now convinced, has better products.

Just a thought.
I have one of these in my G51J and I was unlucky enough to buy it right when they pulled the firmware for the BIOS password bug. Performance sucked from a few days after I installed until I was finally able to flash it.

Countdown: 10 Days, 5 Hours, 6 Minutes, 28 Seconds

I'm going to kick back and watch all you guys comment on and tweak your G53s before I order one. I want to know all its "ins & outs" up front. First one here that gets one should start an "Owners' Lounge" thread.

my countdown = Voodooi + 10 days -
G73 and G53 use the same hard drive bracket and you can always try Asus eStore first, but I heard it's very shortage.
-
THanks for the reply ken, i tried the Asus estore and didnt find it by entering the G73JH parts, by any chance you know the item number?

Hey guys,
anyone order from XoticPC? The color options are available!
Xotic PC Article & Info Section - NAVBAR_TITLE
I want to get rainbow, but not in that order... so I'm going to send Justin and Verifications tomorrow.

I feel sorry for all you people who preordered ages ago and have to wait.
Especially when Sandy Bridge is right around the corner. -
There's always something new around the corner. After sandybridge people will want to wait for the mobile AMD 6000 series. But those are the northern island chips and will probably only be a bit faster than whats available, so then people will want to wait for the southern islands 28nm cards. By that time a new intel chipset will be looming on the horizon so may as well wait for that....
I just figure out a budget, determine the date I need to have the computer in my hands, then buy the appropriate system. -
If it's a huge difference to what I have now (or will have) I will trade, esp if Asus comes out with a g54-3d that is 10 times better. otherwise I feel it's just like when I had my T9600 and the i7 went out, sure it was more capable, but my laptop was still capable, so it was not a big deal for me.
-
Thanks ken, sadly no stock on US, no stock on europe, but asus.eu ordered to taiwan, so 3-4 weeks to reach to them, probably another 3-4 week to reach the us, and another to reach to guatemala, so probably for christmas
-
Some of us are getting old... I might not still be around to enjoy Sandy Bridge (or Ivy Bridge, etc., etc.,). And even if you're not old, you might get run over by a truck tomorrow or get hit by a meteorite. Live now. Now is all you have -- today is all you ever have.
But no, I didn't preorder. I don't buy things unless they are available now. Also, I'm hearing all kinds of rumors about availability... some are saying late Oct... others are saying not until early 2011. I'll wait until I can order it and receive it in the same week or 10 day period. -
Words of wisdom my friend... Words of wisdom.

Or words of a Tech Addict

idk how it wil really be, my guess is faster and better temps, but idk for example in desktops I'm not ugrading until the 2011 socket sandy bridge by that time I'm half way to ivory bridge... So the story never ends.
But not all are as lucky as you guys, I had a very small window to order it and get it to fiend that will bring it to me in guatemala, and I manage to sell mine decently by the time sandybridge hots I might no have, so for me all played perfect.
Also who knows if you might get nvidia with sandy bride I'm guessin the cards might be relase close to sandy bridge, so probably asus will drop nvdia for ati again just to sell more laptops, for me all things went right.
And if sandy bridge and new gens of cards make it to be worth upgrading, ill probably will do the efort, but for now I'm like a kid on christmas again.
As the above poster said, enjoy the time you have in hand, not always waiting is good. -
Well it is a big jump from Nehalem to Sandy Bridge. Much more change than from SB to Ivy Bridge. Considering that with SB you now get IGP on the same chip. And not only that but G3 SSDs from Intel will be released at the same time, so thats a bonus.
But i do understand that people having a laptop with the old T or P processors dont really care about Sandy Bridge. But not to me who have Nehalem, i want a bigger jump instead of a small upgrade. And to be fair, the preorder started long time ago too.
And who knows, i will probably go through the same long painful wait when i preorder a gaming laptop from Asus with Sandy Bridge too
But Asus with ATI? HELL NO. Then i would get furious
-
when did the preorders start? Everyone is saying a long time ago.
For most retailers G53-3d is not available for pre-order, Xotic Pc started taking them on Oct 1st, and I placed an order on Oct 6.
They also told me I am first or near first in line to get the laptop, so at least I know the first shipment is going to include me! COME ON ASUS WHERE ARE THEY!? -

Looks like GentechPC was the first to actually have color mods.
Here is a youtube video they had posted up since September 19, while Xotic just posted that page on the 11th.

Im not sure if Gentech created the mod. I just know they had been doing it for a while. Ken here on the forums is the person to ask and I am sure if they are doing the mod themselves that they can do any color setup you need.Last edited by a moderator: May 6, 2015 -
Who was talking about the 3d model??
-
Good question...
Well when did the G53 pre-orders start. -
The non-3D G53 pre-orders started in early September. The 3D version I've heard started very recently and won't be released until mid-November at the earliest.
-
I give credit to GENTECH PC, or Ken specifically for being so helpful about the led mods.
An XoticPc sales rep told me that they change the leds, was it because he wasn't sure or trying to justify the price or something else, I'm not sure. -
Me thinks June or July...September?? Was before that no?
