what store would that be?
PCCANADA? has those same models available... i plan on getting which ever one comes in stock first
NCIX is getting the 1350 dollar version, 4gb ram and 500gb HD.
that is a nice cheap alternative, to people who dont use blueray -
how is it that the cheaper one has blu-ray at your computer store? Are the other specs the same?

I was on the verge of ordering a Sager NP8690-S1 or even a HP 8540W. A DreamColor screen would've been nice, but too damn expensive. These videos have held me back for a bit longer.
After retuning a G73JW to a local dealer due to defects and programs crashing, I'm almost glad it didn't work out for me with it. The G73 is enormous, but it's a sexy looking machine, almost near silent too. The G53 looks even better, but either that dude has humongous hands or it's pretty compact. With the dimensions of the G53 floating around on the interwebz, I was expecting something much larger (insert she said joke here.) Then again, camera angles can be deceiving.
I'm just hoping it doesn't have the blue hue the G73JW screen had. Man this wait is killing me, I'm approaching midterms and having to use my schools computers...
-
remove the "#/" before the video code and it works.
-
+1 rep to the 2 users who posted youtube videos. That's pure in matte plastic, mang. After seeing that this machine will be pretty much top-o-the-line, I'm strongly considering it. lemme go look at my WNSIB thread lolz.

YouTube - Asus G53J HD Video-Preview
Sorry people my bad just noticed it's the same video as before, props to the first poster!I feel really stupid, that's what I get for being up this late!
I'd looks very sharp
-
anybody know why it says the VGA card sticker says 0 months warranty? I thought all cards came with a 3 year warranty from asus?
-
It is probably because it is the model that resellers get for their use and not consumer use, usually those computers are stripped apart and thrashed for promotional reasons and benchmarks hence why there would not be any warranty. Can't comment on the VGA though.
-
LOL! I did not know that this vid. had been posted at here before.
-
Just for verification, is the G53J 3d a 1080p screen? if so then it might actually be worth spending the extra money on... Very few newer ASUS screens are finally 1080p 3d as it's a lot of bandwith to produce 120FPS on 1920x1080. A new 3d Toshiba laptop at Best Buy has the 1366 resolution and I like how smooth even the mouse goes across the screen...
-
The 3d version is currently a 1366x768 screen. The non-3d is 1920x1080 and if a best buy version of the non-3d is released it will likely be either 1600x900 or 1366x768.
-
If BB models get 1600x900 screen res it will be very tempting.....of course depending on the other hardware inside but if I had to guess we will more than likely see 1366x768 screen from BB.
With all the delays from ASUS I will be surprised if BB comes out with this model by the end of the year. -
I really doubt the G53 BB will get anything over 1366x768, as it is its gona be rough to get the price down to $1k.... where the G50VT started, then the G51VX went a little over but around there, so did the G60JX. At $1499 for the A1 with only 1hdd and 6gb of memory... take 2gb of memory out and lower the hdd, that might lower the price around $100, take off a year warranty another $100, downgrade to i5 460m for another $100 or so and its close to $1199 so the screen will have to drop another $100 to land it at least into the $1099, maybe without the bluetooth and maybe no usb3... maybe you can bring it down to $1049.
But i think we will see an amazon/newegg/tigerdirect version, like the current G51JX-X3, is almost the same as bestbuy version G60JX just with the 1080p screen for $100 more than bestbuy, atm they seem to be clearing them out at low prices, so im expecting to see this version arrive to amazon soon. Amazon got the G73JW-XA1 exclusively, i see no reason why they shouldn't get a exclusive on the G53, on the other hand newegg go the the one before with the G51VX-X3, so who knows for sure, but i do expect one like that soon
.

Hey, I've been lurking around this thread for awhile now. Guess its time to post haha. I was just wondering what the best upgrades for this laptop would be. I'm getting it from powernotebook.com and this will be my 1st expensive laptop. Btw, my laptop/computer knowledge is not that broad, just want the best laptop for my money. I will use it mostly for college and SC2. Hoping it will be good for future games too

For speed probably the most important upgrade would be to get a Solid State Drive.
I would strongly recommend getting a Solid State Drive in your primary bay and adding the 500GB 7,200 RPM as your secondary for storage. Then put your OS and all your applications and games on the SSD, and all your data on the 500GB 7,200 RPM.
For perspective, your processor, memory and graphics card will score in the low 7's in the WEI (Windows Experience Index) and your 500GB 7,200 RPM will score 5.9. Put the SSD in and it will score 7.7, moving your hard drive from the slowest component, to the fastest. Once you use an SSD you will never go back!
Beyond that you can consider the Blu-ray drive and the Intel® Centrino® Advanced-N 6200 card. However if you are only going to use your WiFi for Internet access, and you are not going to be using it for data transfer between computers, I would stick with the standard WiFi card.
6GB DDR3/1333 is plenty of memory for most people, but then upgrading to 8GB is pretty cheap so that is another upgrade to consider. -
What kind of data do we put in the 7,200 RPM?
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
All of your data files.
Keep your apps and OS on the SSD, and when you open a data file in any app the work will be done using your system memory and SSD. You only use the 500GB 7,200 RPM as your "file cabinet" for all of your data files. -
So the OS will be installed automatically in the SSD right? Or do I have to do that manually?
-
Since these data always change...is there any final word on the stock specs of G53 besides the 740qm and 460m? Or are the specs on 1toppc/xoticpc finalized?
-
Oh man if this came with the 840qm for the same price oh man
-
ATI just announced their 6000 series cards, to be out by the end of the year. Sigh... now... now I'm not sure.
AMD launching next generation of Radeon graphics cards next week, shipping by end of the year -- Engadget -
I for one dislike the hype about ssd...
Small volume and high price. Don't forget that most of the updates or core programs you want the speed will have to go onto the ssd, it does run out of space fast.
Not to mention in terms of real usage, it only really helps on several things like opening app speed, doesnt rilli do right for the performance of the program itself.
I would save the money and go for wireless and cpu upgrade instead.
But these are just my opinion. I personally just put in a seagate for small boost and I totally need 500 gb space for my stuff.
If anyone going for ssd, make sure you read about the performance of ssd on g73, may give you an insight how it needs to be optimized etc. -
This is essentially how I configured my G53 order (with Donalds help) and then switched it over to my G73JW when I gave up waiting for the 53.
I have to say that using a SSD as a primary drive has made for an amazing performance gain; to be honest I have never had a system this fast. My current HD WEI rating is at 7.8. To etismynames point the drives are not cheap and I chose a 120GB drive. After installing the OS and a few key applications Ive used about 50% of the SSD. All other applications will be installed on the larger standard HD.
This definitely means that Ive made some compromises as apps installed on the larger drive can only run as fast as that disk, however with the OS on the SSD the overall performance is VERY noticeable. At some point down the road Ill pick up a larger SSD, however this will need to wait until the prices come down some.
As Donald said Once you use an SSD you will never go back! .well I am now a believer. -
Putting in SSD was the best upgrade I ever did, yeah there not cheap but well worth it.
Beleive the hype! -
I don't... when you're playing games, the gfx card's memory is more important than anything, the ssd may help, but not by much.
When you're opening Word or Firefox, Win 7 would have these preloaded in the memory, it does that to most frequently used applications.
Having a normal hdd for your data means when saving/opening files, speeds won't change.
I'll get an ssd and try outlook on it, because the 2010 outlook is a total turtle. -
Quick question, I'm a graphic designer so very heavy photoshop user. I did what most people here are doing, SSD for the primary drive and 500gb for the secondary.
If I install my Adobe products on the SSD but the .PSD files are on the non-SSD, will it use the SSD to run the file or the drive that the file is on?
Thanks! -
That's fine, I know a SSD does not really help for gaming performance besides loading levels faster, I was talking more of a overall speed boost in computer performance.
I use a external HDD for storage(1TB) and everything is fine and dandy for me anyway but I can see why people are a little wary of getting one.
Price!
For me and my uses well worth it
-
A solid state drive is the only upgrade I went for - there's nothing else that would be worth the price in my opinion. The processor is quite expensive for the next step up and probably wont change performance significantly. We're already over 4g of ram with the base configuration so that's ok as well.
Solid state drives are quieter, produce less heat, use less power, and are more resistant to shock than normal hard drives. In addition, I run 1-5 gb log files through a program that analyzes the data and produces summary workbooks, and read/write speed directly influences how fast those files are processed.
If I have a notebook that travels I like to use a solid state drive as the main drive, then use a big external drive for archiving and backup. -

Outlook will not only snap open MUCH faster, but wait until you do your first search for a Contact or Sent item...you will really notice when the results snaps instead of sitting there twiddling until it finally produces a result like it does on a magnetic drive. -
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
When you pull the .PSD into your application on the SSD the work is done by your system memory and the SSD. -
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
Don't be afraid to use the other 50% of your SSD. Unlike a magnetic HDD that starts to lose performance once it is about 60% full, the SSD can still perform without degradation when it is virtually filled up. -
Probably desktop variant only
-
Good to know thanks!
-
I went ahead and installed Office 2010 on my secondary HD, but made sure to place my PST files on the SSD. My PST files combined come to about 12GB and on my old system any type of folder switch (heaven forbid I actually try to resort or search for anything) would take forever.
The difference has been mind boggling. Talk about snappy, I can sort, resort search and do whatever else I want instantaneously....it is amazing.
Should I go back and install Office on the SSD, perhaps, but for the time being I'm extremely pleased with the responsiveness of Outlook as is. -
Does the Asus motherboard supports sata 6gb/s
Then it will be worth getting the - 256GB Crucial C300 Solid State Drive SATA III -
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
There are no laptops in the world that have SATA III controllers, and only some desktop boards have them.
Therefore, while the C300 drives may give you slightly more speed due to their technology, the only real reason to buy them is their larger capacity. -
And even desktops marvel sata3 its not that great, most of the impressive numbers of the C300 are done with LSI cards, i guess until intel/amd nativly supports sata III imo not worth it.
-
I guess it will be better to wait & get these -
Hitachi Ultrastar C10K600 Enterprise HDD -
I have (2) 1tb hdd full at 85% my current laptop 320gb is almost full. For me, I need more space than anything. If I get a huge external maybe i'll move one of the hard drives I have in the laptop to my ps3 and get an ssd. I want to enjoy my laptop first.
-
Hey, what's faster: Sata(3?) 6gb/s, USB 3.0, or eSata? Also, which is the G53 supposed to have for sure, besides USB 3.0?
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
SATA III is 6Gb/s, USB 3.0 is 4.8Gb/s and eSATA is as fast as your controller and hard drive allow it to be.
So, both SATA III and USB 3.0 are limited to no more than SATA II 3Gb/s speeds.
The ASUS G53JW-A1 will have a SATA II controller.
Asus G53, the smaller version of the G73jh
