In that youtube video someone posted earlier of G53, I remember seeing a blue usb slot = 3.0. Will the G53 in fact have USB 3.0?
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
Yes, it will have USB 3.0
-
Your site doesnt have option of having
500GB SATA II 3GB/s 7,200 RPM Hard Drive - Seagate XT NCQ Hybrid w/4GB SSD
as Primary Hard Drive, will you have that option soon ?
all the other resellers have that option -

Yay! Can't wait for this beast. Perfect specs, perfect size.
Btw, noone answered my question yet: How well does the 740qm perform at dual-core mode? Compared to i5-460m? -
Not a simple answer since the i7 720QM has 100% larger cache, a 20% larger memory bandwidth, and an on-die memory controller vs on-package memory controller. I haven't really seen a benchmark directly for it yet though.
Bi-Tech did a benchmark of i7 720QM vs fast dual core for mobile and i7 720QM beat them in their real world and gaming benchmarks: http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/laptops/2009/11/13/intel-core-i7-mobile-720qm-benchmarked/3
i5 vs i7 Unless you are using old software, an i7 Quad is a better buy. There are those who stand by high frequency, but it's simply not true anymore. High frequency does not equal faster any longer with the new architecture from Intel. There are many more factors that contribute to performance now. -
So will it perform either faster or more efficient than an i5-450/450/520m at dual-core mode? Reason I ask is in reference to SC2 on high/ultra and for PCSX2/Dolphin emulators, all of which only maximize performance at (up to) dual core.
If no definite answer, at least a guess or hint which'll help me determine if I should get this machine or something cheaper.
Thanks!
-
Go with the Quad. There really isn't any definitive evidence to backup that dual core is better for gaming any longer. The new i7 from Intel changed that, the Quads can hold their own and exceed the best dual cores now. Their turbo boost compensates more than adequately.
A laptop like G73 is so much more than just a SC2 machine. For that reason alone you should choose i7. Everything from encoding video, music/video conversions, multi tasking, the i7 will destroy the i5 easily, wouldn't even be a question or debate.
But your battery life should be better with the i5 being 32 nm with 35 TDP vs i7 being 45nm with 45 TDP -
Only 5~ more days, guys! =D
I was considering bumping it up to 2 day UPS but it's an additional 100$, versus 5-6 day standard UPS since Asus and their delays have caused me to go insane
Hopefully my uploaded pictures will turn out good since I'm using a Smartphone 3MP camera (my actual camera no longer works
). If they're pretty, then I'll upload lots of them.
-
The reason I ask, is that the 3 tasks that I will mainly be doing can only utilize 2 cores. So is it true that the i7-720qm maxes out at 2.4ghz for dual-core mode? How much more would the 740qm run at?
-

The clock speed of the processor is probably the least important element of the equation. Particularly when comparing the Intel® i7-720QM and the Intel® i7-740QM which are only 130MHz apart...virtually meaningless.
Without a solid state hard drive your processor choice almost becomes irrelevant. -
why dont u just wait for NCIX or PCcanada to get it, they will be getting it a couple days after or possibly even the same day as the US vendors,,, free express shipping. works out to be cheaper for u
and i almost want to bet u wouild have it quicker, they already have it on there sites, and taking pre orders, so they should be getting them within the week, thats what they tell me in emails,,, -
Wow ur a real advocate for SSDs
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
Anyone who has used one will be an advocate for them. Everyone else can just read about and guess about them.
-
Yea I've heard a lot of good things, I decided to get the intel x25-v as a boot drive awhile ago
-
I've always shopped with GenTech (for years, along with family), so that's why I'll stick with them. GenTech is also honouring the 8GB of RAM from when the G53JW was first posted (and later decreased to 6GB by Asus). Plus, the Canadian dollar is on par 1 for 1 with the USD, which is HOT!
As for the speed, I'm pretty sure US resellers will be getting them before Canadians do, since my past technological purchases have proven that, but who knows, they may receive them at the same time.
Edit: Actually it doesn't work out cheaper by buying Canadian. GenTech charges 1499 - 3% (if you do the E-Check) = 1455 + 50$ Shipping. NCIX charges 1549$, so you save about 45$ by shopping GenTech/US due to the 3% cashback offered as a promo, especially since the dollar is on par. -
what about with shipping added in?
-
Thanks for adding it
-
Anyone know what brands will be used in the G53 for: ram, wireless, dvd-burner, the LCD screen?
-
Wireless will be atheros, DVD will probably be the same one they put in their asus external drives, LCD probably Hannstar, ram not sure
-
Ill buy from any seller
whos pm me & tells me they have it in STOCK
& will config & ship it out in a week
(guess thats enough time)
-
I added shipping in the price
Still a 45$ savings if you shop US (resellers such as GenTech) but make sure you use the Paypal E-Check option to get the 3% off.
-
How do we get that ?
do we need call payPal & arrange it ? -
I added the final touches to my glorious g53. Rainbow keyboard (ish... I chose fewer colors!) And an upgraded secondary hdd. Woo! Now it is back to waiting... in the meantime I ebay'd a sweet unicorn decal for the cover. No... I'm not joking, fellas. This laptop is going to be one powerful, magical, zombie killing tool.
Now I need to think of an appropriate name for it... hmm... -
What's with you and unicorns?
-
You make a paypal account and attach your bank account to it. Then you send him an E-Check for total, minus 3%. You'll save approximately 45$ minimum if you buy the G53JW stock and even more if you get it customized.
-
You can also do wire transfer, which I was about to do today, but they close on Sundays.... so E-check it is.
-
I shy away from paypal or wire transfers personally. Many credit cards will double the warranty on computers, or give you an extra year (whichever is less), but only if you purchase the computer with the card directly. So using paypal or e-checks nixes the benefit.
You can also cancel a credit card payment if you feel like you are getting ripped off, which is much easier than trying to get your money back if things go sour. I'm all for saving a few bucks, but I don't feel like its worth the risk over using my visa. -
What's with you and NOT Unicorns?
Unicorns are magical. *__*
Actually... I find humor in liking unicorns, and humor is everything. -
Sorry, I still only understood half of what you said. Can you please state an example.I'm sorry I'm changing from a MAC.
-
He meant putting Windows 7 (64) on the SSD (which is your operating system) and your "other stuff" such as movies, games, files, etc. on your 500GB Hard Drive. People tend to also place software such as Photoshop on their SSD. An SSD makes your critical operating files load incredibly fast.
-
How about UNI-CRUSH, but now that I think about sounds like crushed UNICORNS
Rainbow Warrior???
Those are for free
-
Good point, I'm buying from Xotic Pc and I know they have a history here and a reputation. Anything less than stellar will get out and haunt them.
Thats really the only reason I have no problem in getting the 3%...
BTW EVERYONE. You only get 2% when you also add Free Shipping if you buy from Xotic Pc. You will end up saving a little more according to them. are the others the resellers the same? -
If you have any experience, or if anyone else does, how's the quality of the parts Asus usually chooses? 3-5 years??
-
EDIT: Also, anyone know how much battery to expect outta the G53's stock specs? Is the 460m supposed to be more or less of a battery hog than the 5870?
-
I read the battery will live for 2.5HRS, but it wasn't clear if the 2.5HRS was with WIFI & Browsing or just fiddling with Microsoft Office. 8 cell will be enough for 2 lectures in a row, so I'm happy.
As for 460m vs 5870, wouldn't the 460m consume less power since it's smaller than the 5870? -
we all know the company rated battery is all lies... Real life usage would give it 2 or even 1.5 hours. Gaming would give it 1 hour.
-
2 lectures = 2.5-3 hours? YOU SERIOUS? WOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOO!! Would it be worth it to grab a spare battery ?
-
I wouldn't put too much hopes into battery life though, i mean its a high end gpu and cpu, so i wouldn't expect too much, maybe 2 hours, i think it uses the same battery as the G73 and have the same components, so i would expect slightly more due to smaller screen, guessing maybe around 15mins more.
-
So I was reading about the 460M on notebookcheck, and it said that it was Optimus capable. Would it be possible to throw in an i5 or i7-620m to make it Optimus capable? Also, would this be possible in the G53?
-
I doubt it, even if its Optimus capable, when they design the board n bios they should support it also, since i dont see Asus anouncing it, i think its not possible. This would be a big feature for me, but i already got used to to the idea of not having it at least on this generation. Also when the first optimus based laptops came out require a special set of drivers, later on Nvidia unified releases, but im not totally sure if you can install any driver, so i think this needs a little more research and maturing, so for this reasons im happy with a none optimus based setup, that said, i hope to see sandy bridge or ivory bridge versions of the asus G series with optimus based setups with all drivers released and betas to support this feature, until then the G73 should make me happy.
-
Yeah, lectures are 1HR/ea. I wouldn't care about the battery life if my school had more power sockets in their lecture halls. As for a spare battery, the price is just too high imo.
I'm also pretty sure you can't downgrade to an i5 in the G53JW, but I could be mistaken
If only i7 supported optimus, I'd be a happy camper.
-
If only it did... lol. Still, the models that utilize Optimus aren't that terrible. The 335m is a pretty capable GPU. I've always wondered why they didnt enable switchable in the 5850/5870 though, since there's i5 options for those few lappies.
-
I think mostly because you would need 2 different MOBO's, one that supports OPTIMUS and one that does not, since these laptops can support i7's which don't support OPTIMUS and i5's that do it would be more costly for a manufacturer to offer both.
When it comes to business a manufacturer will almost always go with what option is cheaper and I'm guessing just having the 1 MOBO that works with both the i5 and i7 CPU's is more cost effective. -
Well you can wait for the MSI GT663 that has rumored to support optimus tec, but i doubt it also, they probably going to be scrambling to get them out and compete with the G53, but them releasing it later could be they are doing the optimus support, still i doubt it, but either way not like the G53JW is available.
Hey ikas you still waiting for SB+68XX or you gona go with G53JW? -
I think a wiser purchase would be SB + 68XX desktop and take what we have now for the laptops, e.g. G53/GT663.
-
If the mainboard is made for i7 then it will not support i5. Most likely the G53JW with Core i7 will not enable Intel HD Graphics on i7-620M to support Optimus.
-
I actually think this is how widi was removed from the specs... because originally they had an i5 option in mind which included the optimus but more importantly, the Intel HD Graphics which includes widi, but in order to release faster it they had to stick with i7s only...
-
More than likely wait, that is unless the G53JW blows people away and they start posting awesome reviews.
I'm in no hurry but I do want a new laptop
-
hello guys.... today is the 18th. Asus should release the G53jw today right?
Asus G53, the smaller version of the G73jh
