i think im gunna go with the g73jw after seeing the vids, the g53 construction looks like its made of crappy plastic, and the one video had the guy making that annoying tapping sound, the bezle around the screen, looks like we went back 5 years in laptop construction, why isnt it edge to edge glass?
maybe im blind but that bezle looks like an at least .5inches on each side, soooo basically u may as well have gone with the g73, and filled it up the plastic bezle with actual screen. There is a little bezle on the g73, but man the amount of it on the g53 just looks plain dumb.
An upside though, i notice that the g53 looks to have just one big mega Hinge, insteal of 2. at least that will be durable, I wish they would have just stayed with the matte finish, and its pretty lame that the HD drive bays, wont be available till december or something. What if i wanted to an SSD now?
IM really starting to consider the g73 or msi gx660r now. The more I look at the g53, the more i dont like it, the only thing i can see that the g53 has on the MSI, is the matte finish,, no stupid finger prints, a pain in the arse to upgrade , but they do claim the best coffee.
other than that, the MSI has better cooling, has more ports, etc...
-
Bezel is something Asus thinks is cool or something... my g51 has more bezel around its screen than 4 laptops combined.
I think you really need to see the g73 in person before you make a decision to go bigger, the g73 is absolutely massive, I brought my g51 to best buy to see the difference between it and g73(which is a little bit smaller than the g53) and boy is there a difference... like sun and moon. -
I basically said in my additional hard drive request: "If the additional hard drive will delay my order, just ship the laptop and forget the hard drive
".
I'd rather have my laptop in hands than to wait a whopping 1-1.5 months for hard drive insertion parts
Maybe you should just forget the additional HD and then once December comes along, buy everything you need to put it in yourself or get someone to do it
-
Thanks for the videos everybody. It has really helped in my decision. You don't know, but by your simple actions of typing a few words on a forum, you have given alot of us great feelings joy and security in our choices. It's always much nicer to see products in action, than rely on just the photos on online shops.
Thanks ya'll! -
Actually I thought the G73 isn't TOO large for a 17inch but the G53 is seriously large for a 15inch.
It is no where being as portable as any other 15inch models.
Seeing that it has a less efficient cooling system compare to the G73, I would suggest to get a G73. Especially after noticing how difficult for us to open it up, even Ken says it's difficult.
Imagine one day you want to switch to another HDD or clean out the fans.
And the ratting sound really would be annoying, they really should fix it..
-
But is it soo hard that it would deter someone from buying the product? I've seen the G73 at Bestbuy, and that thing is as big as my torso (I'm 5'4"). If G53 is as big(small) as any of the G50/51/60's, then I'm sold. Plus, isn't all the fun in opening it up?
-
Wow, can't believe this thread is almost @ a quarter million views.
Go G53JW?
Sadly, I've never seen the G73 in real life. Literally everyone @ both my university and college have MacBooks ...eww. Hell, I haven't even seen an Alienware! -
Do you have a Bestbuy near you? Or a Frys?
-
We have FutureShop and Best Buy as the top Canadian technology stores and both suck! FutureShop has 0 gaming laptops and Best Buy has 1 G73JH not on display and the Toshiba Qozmio (ridiculously overpriced @ 1899$ and it has a 360m), also not on display (at least @ my store).
-
So Im guessing the g53 is pretty big? How big is it compared to the g73?
-
LAME.
I still want the G53 though regardless.
Btw, what are the dimensions of the G53? -
Dimensions and Weight
Width : 39.1 cm
Depth : 29.7 cm
Height : 2.00 - 5.00 cm
Weight : 3.6 kg (with 8 cell battery)
(off an unofficial website - it could be wrong)
Edit: (official off of the 3D model)
This 3.6kg machine has a dimension of 391 x 297 x 20 ~ 50 mm. -
Sized Up: G73JW-A1 vs G53JW-A1 vs G50Vt-X1 (1)
I made this awhile back... you can add your own laptop so you can compare something that is infront of you. -
If you're comparing the size for G53 & G73, the G53 is just an inch smaller at most so it still big. Still waiting for game benchmarks and if the G53 is really hotter than G73.
Any reseller want to try benchmarking SC2 on native res and ultra settings?
Still got a month to save and place my order.
-
It's about 1LBS~ lighter too
I'll try and post FPS for SC2 by Sun/Mon if no one beats me to it, but I have no doubt it'll be fine on Ultra (I'll make sure to pick something intense like "Infested Arena - Custom" since 3/4 of your screen is covered at all times.
-
Thanks! Well there's a little diff on High/Ultra setting anyways. I got an aging desktop Q6600 with 8800GT and want to have at least equivalent power or more but mobile.
-
This weekend I'll try SC 2 on my lappy... see how far I can get with solid 30fps.
I'm pretty sure the g53 can play it on ultra high no problem... -
WHAT? 2 more months just for the G53 with 2 hard drives? alright that's it, i'm switching... to G73 or another laptop... how much better is the GTX 470m and is it worth giving up SSD option to fit my budget?
-
What who said that? If thats true I'm making the switch too
-
Some post earlier it was said that Asus can only deliver the HDD brackets from end of November onwards.
EDIT:{}
What laptop would give you a GTX470M? -
Justin said they will have brackets from 21 to end of month if I can recall
-
Sager NP8690 - XOTIC PC - (Built on Clevo W860CU) np8690 Gaming Laptop
that one gets gtx 470m, though with only one HDD for 15 inch, then it gets too expensive for the other laptops with it.
OK, does 2 500GB HDDs in RAID 0 get similar performance to a SSD? if so, i will forget the whole SSD thing. -
$395 extra for the GTX470M, I´d rather OC the 460M slightly
I´m very happy with my 64Gb SuperTalent SSD as system drive and the original 320Gb as storage drive in my G50VT-B1, even for all the games to keep space on the SSD. I´ve never had any problems in games they might load faster if they where on the SSD but it´s not worth getting a bigger SSD for just some seconds while loading a save game
I thought the G53 isn´t capable of having a RAID config or am I wrong on this? -
Well, i'll get a different laptop for RAID once someone tells me on here whether a RAIDed 7200rpm two HDDs has similar performance to a single SSD.
And, HOW MUCH better is the GTX 470m? -
Guys just checked g53jw available for preorder in amazon.com for 1300$
-
Alright, i'm stuck between these two laptops... Which one should i get?

I completely understand being frustrated with the wait and appreciate your kind words. We have provided you nothing short of honest, truthful updates. It's the same thing because it is the honest update of your orders status and unfortunately there is not a update or change of information.
If your order is not up to be fulfilled then you would not be contacted about the hard drive bracket. We would make this contact with a customer when there order is up to be fulfilled (for any back ordered parts).
In regards to the hard drive bracket, we are awaiting for the machines to arrive from ASUS. When a customers order is being allocated a machine they will be asked if they want to remove the 2nd Hard Drive or if they are comfortable with taking apart the laptop to install it, we will ship it when the brackets arrive. We just received this update on the brackets yesterday afternoon so our updates will reflect this to customers right away. (those that are allocated machines) -
Is anyone worried that in the video reviews the temps are touching 90 degrees?
I am trying to decide between this and the Sager 8690 and reviews for that model state temps above 75 are abnormal. -
ah screw it, i'm getting the Sager 8690 now... I did say before i was going to cancel this order if any more delays happened... stupid brackets.

Would it be possible to take a picture of the G53 sitting inside the G73? We've seen a side by side, but a overlap would be nice! So we can see physically how much smaller it actually is? i.e. Sitting the G53Jw on the G73 keyboard. -

ps.: the first asus image is actually from a G73JW, so don´t take those temps numbers as valid -
^ Asus G53 air intake should be the same as G73 which is through about where the speakers are. Therefore the bottom doesn't get hot at all

Yea, I was one of the ones who pondered about this. Without a doubt I believe the G53jw will be able to function normally at 90 C, its not that bad of a temp under furmark, but I am a little mehh about it. Seeing the the temps after 20mins of furmark only brought the g73jw (only slightly larger machine) to 78-79 C according to the xoticpc review and user posts. Now with the gentech review for this machine(g53jw), after 10 mins of furmark it came to 90 C. I would just like to know if the machine stays cool to the touch under heavy load, since this would be a big turnoff for me. I dont want the keyboard to toast my hands or the palm rest to double as a palmwarmer.custom said: ↑Is anyone worried that in the video reviews the temps are touching 90 degrees?

I don't understand the difference you're seeing. Both systems have two fans blowing warm air out of the back of the system. The difference in the sager picture is there are cool air intakes directly under the fans, while the asus has intakes at the center of the system.arjcba said: ↑The difference is in the back of the Sager, they have 2 fans blowing in cool air while the asus is closedClick to expand...

Sager's have both the intakes at the center of the laptop and the two fans, what make the air flow much bigger than asus's
A directly intake gets a cooler air either -
I'd rather have the asus design from an engineering standpoint. The air is going to take the path of least resistance, meaning most will come from directly under the fans and go out the back with the sager. With the asus, all of the air enters from the mid-center of the machine, and has the potential to cool the innards before even getting to the fans. Although, in that case you do have the drawback of having hotter air arrive at the heatsinks... so it might not be better after all.
I think the question people are curious about is, rather than a sager vs asus comparison, why does the g73 appear to cool more efficiently than the g53, when the sizes and intake systems are almost identical? -

I am quite a newb with all of this, so when people in the Sager forum were worried about their machines reaching 75 degrees, it seems like 90 would be a recipe for disaster with the Asus over time. -
Woo! UPS just dropped mine off 10 minutes! I won't be able to make a review until this weekend, though.
All I have to say is it's the best laptop I've ever owned in my life. I was worried about the rubberized LCD being plastic but it's fine. First laptop not to burn my legs (rofl)! Just everything about it is superb. It doesn't even weigh hard on your legs, which I thought it would. It feels like the GX740 in terms of weight. Also, it's smaller than expected - not sure why people were going crazy at the size. It's actually as big as my brothers G51 (well, maybe a little bigger but not by much) imo. It's actually a perfect fit/size for lectures/classes.
For those doubting yourself, GET IT! You will not regret it. UPS Expedite is the way to go if you're outside the US. Ken shipped mine by 5PM yesterday and it was in my hands at 12PM next day.
(review will be posted on sat or sun - gtg!) -

Could be a lot of things, from size of the radiators, design of the pipes/heatsink, even bios thresholds of the fans, etc.Butr0sButr0s said: ↑I think the question people are curious about is, rather than a sager vs asus comparison, why does the g73 appear to cool more efficiently than the g53, when the sizes and intake systems are almost identical?Click to expand...

G73JW uses a GTX 460M which is a newer reiteration GF104. Or a refresh of the GF100 original FERMI. It's a more scalar design that is more efficient with better temps.ecjuanmanuel said: ↑i found this...

The DevilTech uses GTX 480M which is based on a GTX 465 which is the slowest of the first generation GF100. It runs hotter, and less efficient.
There is your answer. The cooling on Clevo and Asus is about the same, despite what same Clevo fanboys may say. The difference with Asus is how they did it where the noise level isn't louder than a refrigerator topping out at 53db... (X7200). Or W870CU at idle being as loud as a G73 at load during a gaming session.
- Repasted G73jh also have Furmark topping out at 78C with Extreme Burn.
- Both G73JW and G73JH with signicant overclock should be around 76C for gaming and around 80C for Furmark ExtremeBurn. Just like a Clevo, except 1/4 the noise level.
So there you go, the answer isn't in the cooling design, it's the cards themselves. Keep in mind, this is a G53 thread and think someone said the cooling in the G53 isn't as good as the G73, not sure about the noise level. -
well at the end it was a knowledge answer:480 overheating so the difference was in that point. the ventilation design works good in both cases. i dont know about other components in "SAGER" just compare it and take wich one you think is better. 1 point I like is the i5 choiceRuckus said: ↑So there you go, the answer isn't in the cooling design, it's the cards themselves.
