I've been reading this thread for a couple of weeks now and am glad I stumbled upon this site. I was originally going to get a G51JX-X1 from Newegg and then replace the hard drive with an OCZ Vertex 2 (I like the fast start times) and use an external drive for data storage. Then I found this thread and changed my mind.

I haven't purchased a laptop in a long time...I have built several PC's and am pleased with the Asus motherboards and will most likely get an Asus laptop. I don't really need a gaming PC but would need a laptop for photo and video editing (Photoshop / Lightroom / Premiere.)

    1. Is the G53 overkill or what I should be looking for? I don't really want a 17" as this will be moved a lot and I have my PC for home use.

    2. I plan on changing the hard drive to the OCZ Vertex 2 and utilize the 2nd hard drive slot for storage...part of the reason I switched from the G51

    3. I would also:
    • increase the RAM to 8GB...don't think I should need to go much higher.
    • add a blu-ray drive...I will use the laptop to connect my TV to my WHS to watch movies in a room where I don't have a HTPC
    • Upgrade the wireless card to the Advanced-N 6200...don't think I need the 6250

    4. I am also planning on getting the ASUS OS Recovery DVD. My plan is to backup the original configuration of the laptop to my WHS...wipe the drive with the OS Recovery disk and start a clean install without the bloatware. Would you do this? Is it overkill?

I like the options offered by Powernotebooks.com as I am partial to the OCZ Vertex 2 drive and plan on purchasing through them at this point. I appreciate any input or thoughts you may have.
    Thanks, Tim

    Hi dude,

So the 3d version of the G53 is out already??!!!!! where did you get it from??? please tell me... are you in the US??
What is the exact model for the 3d version of this laptop?

I tried 3d gaming recently and I'm hooked, I definitely will be getting the 3d model but I haven't found a place to order it from (or perhaps I have the wrong model #).

Model number is Asus G53JW-3DE, I believe he bought it at http://www.gentechpc.com/

Direct link to that model is: Asus G53JW-3DE 15.6" HD 120Hz/NV GTX460M 1.5GB GDDR5/i7-740QM/6GB DDR3/750GB 7200/Blu-Ray/ In Stock: GenTech PC Store

    Hope that helps.

    ^ What he Said ^

When using 3d, the keyboard lighting must either be in full power, or off, otherwise it will be lower than 60hz and the lights will look like they are flickering... something I started freaking out about but then I realized its because of the glasses.

Also the 3d glasses seem to be polorized specifically for 3d screens, if you wear the 3d glasses and don't even turn them on, other screens will be very dark, I thought my monitor and my g50 screens turned off.

    Mknight,

I posted in your other thread as well. The G53-3d model has been released, just in really small quantities. Unless you find a reseller who doesnt have very many orders yet putting in a pre-order for one is about the only way to snag one. Hop in line :)

... not sure if I made the wrong decision buying from the US... because right now NCIX has 5 g53 in stock in their warehouse (avaliable in one day and seems like no one pre-ordered) ... and 3 in stock in Ontario... lol

hopefully I will be happy with my g53 with 8gbs of ram - I don't want to void my warranty by getting to the 4th slot.

can someone take a photo of their g53 placed beside the power adapter. I sort of want to see how large it is.

Tim, I bought a similarly configured G53 from PowerNotebooks. Work has been killing me so I haven't as much time as I like to play around with the laptop but here are my thoughts so far:

    1. It is almost as big as my old 17 inch XPS 1710, but much lighter and easier to move around without snapping your wrist. I don't mind the size as much as I thought I would.

    2. The OCZ SSD is great. Maybe if I feel ambitious enough this weekend, I will try and boot up the XPS and G53 side by side and measure the difference. In the meantime, it just feels much quicker and responsive.

    3. I got 8GB RAM since I was one of the first pre-orders and it was honored. I haven't loaded any demanding games since my old XPS couldn't handle any but will hopefully download a couple this weekend and give it a workout.

    4. Donald at Powernotebooks was great to deal with - very responsive with emails and accommodating. They seemed to bend over backwards to help me make some last minute changes, and got my laptop to me exactly when I hoped to get it. Donald was available via phone on a Saturday to iron out details and get the thing shipped. I am sure other re-sellers here are great as well so not knocking anyone - but glad I went with PN. Also great that they are in Nevada for quick shipping to CA. I give them 10/10 - nothing I would change. Hopefully they will continue to be good if any issues arise.

    5. So far I love the thing. Only 2 nits are the high tension clickpad and the smudgy cover.

    Good luck!

Ugh...I'm wondering whether to continue to wait for the G53 would be a good idea or switch to the G73 one. I'll give it two more weeks.

If you by chance want a 3D model those are in stock and readily available right now. Otherwise G73's are always ready to go right away. :)

Only 6GB and one hard drive though. :( And you can't get a spare adapter, which I'd like so I don't have to reach behind my desk every day to unplug every morning then go behind my desk and plug it back every evening.

    lol no :(

It's even bigger, I'll get another photo soon... Im curently benchmarking left 4 dead 1 and just cause 2.

I dunno, I keep them on so ppl dont keep asking me (what's it got?) the stickers say, gtx 460, i7, bluray... so it shuts them up....

Or starts an even bigger conversation!

Lol fair enough. I guess I just like the nakedness of laptops. Whenever my friends buy new laptops and hand it of to me to do an initial setup with all software required (they're tech noobs) I rip theirs off as a signature. Pisses them off so much but then they thank me. Lol

As Metallic says it is bigger. The G1S used a 90Watt and the G53 uses the same as the G73 which is a 150Watt PSU.

Asus MIGHT have some though they're usually out of stock. Gentech and XoticPC will definitely sell you one, which is how I had to get a spare. (I like keeping one at work and one at home so I don't have to haul them back and forth-plus if one ever dies I'll have a spare while I order a new one)

If any1 out there looking to order a G53jw-a1 w/o waiting then head over to abesofmaine.com (no tax+free shipping) because they have it in stock $1430 for 6gb 1333mhz rams, and everything else stock. But i found that this is the cheapest price compared to Xoticpc.com(no tax + free shipping). At Xotic my preorder came out to be $1450 w/ 8gb and everything else stock w/ the discount. So its only $20 difference between 6/8gb.

But, at Abes you can get yours within 1 week or so, since they are available and ship same day.

Thought I'd share with those who can't wait to get their hands on this BEAST!! like mee!!! hahaha..

I have no clue how to embed my album...

    - The ASUS logo in the back does glow... but the lowest light i've ever seen... very very low brightness.

    - Left 4 Dead 1 plays at 120 fps with ALL SETTINGS ULTRA HIGH, but plays 40 fps with 3D on.
    - Just Cause 2 plays at 30 - 40 fps with ALL SETTINGS ULTRA HIGH, but playes an unplaybe 20 fps with 3d on. But there seems to be a problem with the drivers, as I had to put everything to medium/low settings just to get it playable with 3d on.

I made videos, but with the 3d glasses they were extremly dark.. need to shoot again with higher brightness on camera.

    - Currently installing : Left 4 Dead 2

For similar reasons I guess I will have to look at the Sony VAIO.
I need ExpressCard to run my ViDock graphics, and I like to keep 1394 as an alternative to USB 2.0 external harddrives.

I expected as much... btw... how long is the power cord...

I hate the one that they shipped with the G1 (like only 3 feet long?) so I have to swap it with a longer power cord from my brother's even older ASUS notebook.

I hope they don't give out the same short power cord otherwise swapping is definitely necessary. So frustrating when the cord is like 1 finger SHORT from the lecture room's outlet; or people just complained that my cord go straight to the outlet like a police line.

    OMG let's be L4D2 buddies.
I love playing with other people! And as soon as my laptop comes in... that is going on it. :)
Mine is coming in on Monday... Just gotta get through Sunday! And that should be easy... Friends and Booze make time fly by~

On another note... I'll be buying a new TV soon (decemberish) so, I should be able to hook my little monster up to it for some optimum Blu Ray viewing. Any suggestions on TVs? I've actually never purchased one before (all of mine were hand-me-downs from old video rental stores going out of business) so I have no idea what to look for. I'm thinking 32" is big enough for my room, and I've checked out some floor models at Best Buy, but I really have no idea what to look at!

11/8 isn't too far away... I hope you guys get your machines soon! :)

edit: And Saturday. I forgot there was a Saturday involved with the week. For once, I wish the weekend would go by fast!

Rubberized plastic actually gets more scuffed/scratched than regular (keyword: HIGH QUALITY) plastic would. The rubber aids in finger prints and smudges. But it actually can get more scratches, and thsoe scratches WILL stay. My Samsung D500 and D600 phones were rubberized plastic, and the battery/backside were a bit scratched when I got done with them. Additionally, the rubber will wear over time, and eventually reveal the hard plastic underneath. That's why I'm gonna try to affix the Faux Leather liner from HomeDepot. Will take pix when if this mod is possible :)

Hot damn I want one! Still waiting on my new card though :p Patience is a really hard trait to possess, eh, peeps? LOLz

What IS that rubbery plastic? Let me guess, it's toxic and flakes off at us

I kind of like my normal plastic on my N80...nothing different after 2 years of use.

Regarding size, I don't know what the deal is, but I keep getting one size and then wanting something much bigger after a year or two. Happened with my 32" one and now my 40" one. 32" used to seem HUGE...but it's shrunk LOL. So don't worry too much about going big.

I think the big brands are the way to go-tend to be more reliable, have better scalers, etc., although I'm sure there are exceptions. I've got a Sony and a Samsung and have liked both (got the Samsung because Sony didn't have LED backlit models at the time in that size). Panasonic would be the way to go if you want a plasma one IMO since basically the guy who makes all the breakthroughs for plasma-he and his lab have been part of Panasonic since the 80's I think, and it sort of feels like everyone else is reverse engineering that.

The screen is soooo roomy. Finally got all my FL Studio addons/samples set up and the resolution is just perfect and attractive. Loads in 2 seconds too.

So far, 0 significant issues. I'm still very maticulous and cautious when it comes to the lid, since I'm paranoid it'll get scratched.

Still in the process of installing my games Argh! Canadian internet, specifically Bell, SUCKS! (since my collection is digital downloads).

    LoL Heck YA!!
    "Metallic_Force" is the name....

TVs... depending on how far you sit you get the right size. I sit 7-8 feet away and I have an Insignia, 42'' 1080p for 600-700$ (Should be around 500 now) with 2 year best buy warranty. I love the thing, its got audio pass thru, 4 hdmi inputs. The only complaint would be the backlighting is from the corners, so when viewing dark scense and games it becomes noticable... but it's not that big of a deal.

Good Luck Living through sat and sun!

Does the lid get any mark if u try to scratch it with ur fingernail? Cause I went to the bestbuy and looked at the g73's rubber coating, couldn't scratch it with my nail no matter how hard I tried

    I'm not testing it LOL

I believe it would probably leave a mark if you pressed down with sharp nails against the lid. The only thing the lid came into contact with is the bag inserts and it's looks like I've had it for months b/c of all the smudges ...until I clean it again the 10th billion time :) Not a huge deal, though.

    Hello guys...

This is my first time posting here, although I've been following closely since this thread begun.

Talking about lid protector, doesn't Xotic PC offer the costumized lid protection? I like their protector design, and if it's also available for G53JW, I'll get one G53 with that option selected...

    Anyway, nice knowing you guys.

    Cheers ^___^

How's the keyboard flex and lid flex on the G53JW vs. the G73? I tried out the G73 keyboard and the flex was pretty apparent. Lid had some flex too, but otherwise the quality of the plastics were nice and well textured. Rubberized coating also seemed very well done and I don't think it would scratch as easy as some people claim it would in the thread.

    Hello everyone)

Have been terrorizing Google and 8 different stores for last 2 weeks, wanting to get this beautiful laptop immediately)

I have several questions about it and will appreciate your help very much.

    1) I live in Moscow in Russia. Getting laptops from USA or EU is always such a headache for Russians ;P Though i spent hours on reading all those shipping and payment rules of each retailer, i still don't clearly understand who can ship it to Russia without these famous "2-3 weeks on customs" problems and accept Pay Pal payment, not these "wire transfer", "USA-registered credit card number required" methods that will make me wait for another few weeks..
So, dear Retailers, please answer or PM me on this question and describe the procedure of buying G53 from Russia =)

    2) Though i'm well versed in hardware, i cannot predict the difference between 6 GB of 1066 memory and 6 GB of 1333 one. The G53-XA1 model, Amazon.com: ASUS G53JW-XA1 Republic of Gamers 15.6-Inch Gaming Laptop (Amazon Exclusive): Computer & Accessories, is 200 $ cheaper just because of lower memory clock (1066 vs 1333), it has 250 GB less of HDD space and ships without mouse (no need in it) and backpack (i have 2 backpacks from previous G-series models). If there are hardware maniacs here, can you describe the real difference in FPS\performance while playing games like COD:Black Ops, Crysis (Crysis 2), StarCraft2 on all ultra setting in Full HD resolution, or the memory clock won't make a difference in this case? Also, who can sell the G53-XA1 except amazon.com?

    3) If i desire to add a second HDD, SSD or usual SATA, will i need to buy some special bracket (i have seen posts about it here and there..) to insert second HDD?

    4) It may seem a strange question, but is it possible to install Windows XP as a second OS and get everything, or at list network\sound to work?

Looking forward for answers, greetings from cold Russia everybody =)

PS. Sry for my imperfect english =)

A good retailer would critique and label all the flaws of their product

Dang, I wish that 15" version had a much lower resolution screen! Other than that (and non-dual channel), great specs for cheap.

Lol what do you mean by that

sorry can't help you here, find the representatives from the retail and they will help you out.

I am not an manic on hardware, but the performance depends much on the graphics the laptop has (which is the GTX 460 in this case). Memory clock speed does not have significant impact unless you are talking about running busy database servers or heavy simulations - which is rare for anyone to do on a laptop.

Yes you need a second bracket for the HDD since ASUS decided not to ship a secondary drive with the laptop so they also decided not to include one by default. If you buy a laptop from the retailers specifying that you want a second HDD installed then they will also install the bracket as well.

Should be a Yes. I don't see any problems having 2+ OS on this laptop (especially when it has 2 drives).
