Ugh. Just Sunday to go, and I'm golden... though UPS hasn't updated the location of my machine since the day after it shipped. All I know is, it left Kansas. Where it could be now is anyone's guess... I wonder if it is scared and confused, stuck in that little box.
I was actually leaning towards insignia! I think the 42" is around $600, but a 37" is around $550 from best Buy, and a decent 32" is about $500 (if you're getting 120 hz 1080p.) My question is, if I got one that was 120hz, would I be able to watch 3D with it hooked up to my laptop?
Oh, and I'll friend you soon as I get my machine. Steam is having a sale on a lot of their games (homecoming is $15 and L4D 1 + 2 is $15! SWEET!) So, I'm about to expand my collection in celebration of my laptop's arrival!
Just gotta get through Sunday now... UGH!

I read somewhere that 3D is "capable" with TVs that ARE 120hz or above anyways. So you prolly should look for one with 120hz or higher. Also, you should stick to the 3 S's (Samsung, Sony, Sharp). LG is also really good. I'd personally look at Sammy or LG though, since they usually offer best bang for buck. My cousin however, just picked up a good 40in Sony for about 550 at a store in Koreatown. I will prolly opt for black friday deals though. It's never too hard to find a good deal for a 32inch or higher tv for around 3-4bills. If you're really on a budget though, madam, you Vizio has good prices (not sure of their long-term quality/popularity though). GL HF, lemme know when you get yours cuz I'm gonna be buggin you alot
-
Oh oh getting off topic lol
oh for those of you who want to try the vinyl laptop skin for the g53, here is a video of the same material taken off of a laptop after a year. I will make a video of how to apply a skin to the g53 right after i get mine! xotic says 8th but i hear on their xotic forum that it's apparently next week.

The ASUS G53JW-XA1 is an amazon exclusive and can only be found at amazon. Both the A1 and the xA1 are actually listed having 1066 rams. The xA1 has 1 year less Warranty then the A1 model 250gb less hdd space and the lack of backpack and mouse.
Regardless of where you purchase it i'm afraid you are going to have to wait a while anyways cause if i'm correct all the g53's are out of stock. You would prob have to preorder and hope that they are available before december. -
That's the laptop I have! They just don't make 'em like they used to :'(Last edited by a moderator: May 6, 2015

how long have you had it, i've had my dell inspiron 1520 for like 4 years, thought it was time to buy something new, still love it though, runs like a thing of beauty, max cpu temp 67 and gpu 72 on full loads (changed thermal paste). I would've bought the g73 but the size just isn't for me, g53 is the size of a 17 inch laptop which is probably the max i would go.
-
Had it since November 2007. My gf uses it now. Does everything she needs it to, and always runs cool. No flex anywhere at all, either!
The G53 does everything I'll ever need, but I'm wondering if I can get away with the ENVY 14 1366x768 version. Waiting on another member's response re: its performance. -
You should always future proof it as much as you can. I expect the g53 to last me 5 years, or i'm hoping. Heard Asus has the most durable laptops
-
The Envy is a pile of crap for gaming and is definitely not futureproof. In a year it won't be able to handle any new games past low settings, since it has a 5650 ati.
Go with the STEALTH BOMBER
-
Hmm.. You drive a hard bargain...
Say, how much battery have you been getting? Do you think G53 will be enough for a 2hour lecture? Only reason why I even considered E14/3820TG are because they have really good battery lives, and can handle SC2 on high and their CPUs are good enough for PCSX2/Dolphin emulation. Unfortunately, build quality is still questionable, especially the E14 since HP ain't the same anymo'... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMk3lYoCH9Y LOL -
I got 2h15m with everything super low. With WIFI and a Firefox Tab ...about 2h00-2h05-ish.
It's definitely enough for x2 lectures.
Ya, regarding the build quality, the Envy 14 forums turned me off. People were getting them with dents ....touchpad wasn't alligned, etc. lol -
Yah, QC is pretty bad with HP now. But the amazon price is hard to beat w/ no tax and free shipping. However, the G53 will do everything I need it to, and you and WaxPencil are correct about futureproofability of it. Man, tough choice...but you know what? My gf would prolly suggest the G53 too, cuz she always says I complain about everything I buy---which means that I'll most likely complain about how weak the E14 might turn out to be, 1-2 years down the line. Right?? Right??
-
Ya. If I would of rushed, which I almost did, I too would of picked up the E14 for DJ'ing, but it would of SUCKED for gaming. I also considered the GX660R but I know I would of punched myself.
-
So did you get a chance to take some HQ/HD pix of your new toy?
-
lol...
Errr... no. Dookie is off, you can't just get any 120hz tv and it can automagically play 3d.
The problem with all these 120, 600 hz tvs is that they only still accept 60hz signals and make it smoother... it's splitting hairs really, because the tv is very much capable, its a simple input issue... a hardware one. So make sure the tv is in fact 3d capable, but looking at them... If you are near a best buy and go inside, you'll find a Sony 600hz tv, then a Sony 3D tv.... sadly they are almost alike but different because of the reason above.
Hahaha no way, thats the bundle I actually bought
!!!!! Zombies will have no idea what hitem!
It's "Metallic Force" Btw... without the "_" didn't know we can do it without....
Here

----
Just to let everyone know, the more I keep playing with 3D, the more I am convinced this tech is ready for prime time. As Zombies were rushing into the motel room, it felt so real, as if I was really shooting my uzi as I'm cowering in the corner...
Nvidia has gone above and beyond by testing every game and giving you pointers for the game, and they leave comments and the rating of the 3d quality. So Kudos to them, ati/amd has nothing near this. Polorized is absolute crap compared to this.
- Left 4 Dead 2 plays at 90fps with 2D and 50 fps with 3D On Ultra High Settings Except Anti-analizing is down to 8 from 16.
I am going to test C&C3.
Installing Next: Warhead.
The review is almost done, I need better pics... -
Oh boy! Thanks!!!!! I hope plugging in the A1 into a 3D capable TV works well.
-
You're welcome
if it's anything like what i'm seeing... its gana be amazing! -
Aww, you're making me regret not getting 3-D myself with all your posts LOL
-
Lol, no its a great decsion, the 1080p screen is something I'm jealous of...
Also, I'm NOT sure which TVs can or CAN NOT handle 3D... so I suggest going to the Nvidia fourms.
Board Message -
The power cord is 6 feet long and yes, I remember the G1 has very short power cord, still don't know why Asus use such short power cord to begin with, I don't think they are expensive. -
Guys, for any of you getting one with 6GB ram, I suggest getting it with 8GB.
Right now I have running: IE, Firefox, Fraps, WMP, L4D2, Stream, Orochi Mouse, MSN.
They are taking 6.05gb of my memory, orochi system tray alone is taking 100mb...
I'm having a werid problem with L4D2... I alted out (alt-tab) of the game to answer an msn message and when I returned, my game is running at 12-20 fps with 3D ON OR OFF!!!
Steam doesn't seem to recognize our video card yet, but I doubt that's the problem.
I have 5% cpu usage, and my temps are... I don't know I havn't measured anything excpet with just feeling the air, and its not nearly as hot as my g50...
Edit: After I completly restarted the game, everything was back to normal... its just a bug. -
Any TV with proper 120hz refresh rate can reproduce 3D, but they would have to use non propietary tech like ATi HD3D tech or Nvidia 3Dplay (the actual free, non propietary 3d vision from them). The problem is that most cheap 120hz tvs are fake 120hz that use motion interpolation to double the framerate, and they don't actually have 120hz refresh rates.
Plasmas are another story, as they usually do have great refreshrates. You would only need non propietary tech, because sadly all brands have their own glasses and tech to do the exact same thing. -
LOL... in other words, there are so many ways you can go wrong in buying tvs, you really have to do the research (I'm trying to understand all the nonsense)
For me, I'd like a 3d tv, but I want one to be able to play my Ps3 in 3D as well.... so I can't just buy anything. -
Ditto on this. Ditto oh so very much lol. Hopefully BF brings about some good deals. Planning to visit Frys/BB this year for a new GPS. I can only get so lucky with printing from google maps for so long...
Also, I couldn't sleep guys. The decision is stressing me out lolz! Cuz if I buy the E14, then the i5's and the 5650 will go old fast, as it's not even their high-end offerings respectively. Alternatively, grabbing the G53 yields short battery life so I wouldn't be able to make it to 2 backtoback lectures which will be more than 1.5hours long each. Anyone recommend buying a 2nd battery? -
Or you could just bring ur charger and sit next to an outlet, or take hand written notes like i usually do.
That 6gb of ram doesn't sound normal. I have chrome, rhino3d, autocad, photoshop, illustrator, google earth, and several pdf running and i'm only taking up 47% of 4gb of ram. Maybe it's the 3d? -
8 more days... 8 more days till I know if I made it to the second batch
-
Unless you have can afford another netbook or something small for your classes, the envy 14 might be a better choice for you.
I'm thinking of selling my old lappy and maybe getting an ASUS-UL line specifically for classes and maybe flights... Because this thing is on the large side.
I think it was windows updates, because after my comp automatically restarted (how can you turn it off, rather than delay 4 hours?) I reopened everything and now it's taking about 3gigs... -
The Nvidia 460m is somewhere between the 5850 and 5870, and is quite a bit fast than the 5650 in the envy.
-
my bad, I thought it was a 5800 series for some reason...
I edited the my comment earlier to "unless..." -
No problem.
I've owned the Envy14 and its a very nice machine. It's easy on the eyes, has decent innards, and the graphics card isn't too bad for casual gaming. Removing the radiance display was a bit of a sting but I think for a mobile professional or college student it would be a good purchase. -
Big thanks for your answers everybody, 1 year-warranty model is not an option. Hotic PC is my choice then =)
-
Man, tough choice. I'm very attracted to the power of the G53, but I really would appreciate the longer battery life of the E14. HEADACHE!
-
I use an ipad for class if i really need internet, 10 hours battery life
-
I would say go for the power - if you graduate from school you still can benefit from the raw power of g53. If you chose the envy, really where are you going to benefit from longer battery life since pretty much almost all places you can find an outlet to plug into (ie. office, home, coffee shop - private room or desk with the outlet beneath the desk unless you are doing 24/7 in a coffee shop.
-
If your lectures are going to be over 1.5HRS, you'll have enough time with the battery, since it's 2HR15MIN without WIFI and 2HR05-10MIN with WIFI.
-
If you really want to save power.... undervolt your laptop...
not sure how much headroom the g53 can do for undervolting but if it is like the old G1S... you really have plenty of undervolting room to do (factory setting for each multiplying step for G1S is like .25V higher for every multiplying levels than what each one really needed - not sure about g53)
and another thing to do is to dim out your screen. If you are in a dark lecture room you should adjust your screen brightness level pretty close to the ambient light - and you can still see the screen clearly - too bright and it can hurt your eyes in addition to wasting some power. -
If possible you could also turn off HT (HyperThreading) in Bios and undervolt if you want to save battery / power.
-
oh man, i'd rather buy a wimpy laptop then do that to the G53, ur embarrassing it
-
You can use RMclock to quickly switch between performance-on-demand profile and maximum performance to switch power usage on the go. I would leave HT on however. No laptop is perfect in every aspect but this beast is pretty close to that level considering its specification, price, overclocking(underclocking?) headrooms, AND LOOKS!!. Battery life is obviously as expected but you can definitely control that to some degree with some software tweaking.
-
Err How can you call a wimpy laptop with 4 cores? Disabling HT will still give you enough power to do daily task (Internet and some Word/Excel stuffs) and most games are still not using more than 4 cores.
As I've said if you want to save power / squeeze every minute possible (for long lectures)you could disable it else let it on default.
-
I'm going to overclock as much as i can and hog up every outlet i see!!!!! aahahaha! lol
-
It just need one outlet... just 1
if you want to hog all the power, you need to shut down the circuit for all the other outlets in the lecture hall
-
The envy hasnt gotten great reviews about its battery life, probably still more than G53JW, but not enough imo for its target segment. I think what justified the Envy 14 was its dreamcolor 1600x900 amazing screen now that thats gone.... i see the Acer 4820TG as better candidate. If you really find battery life that important just go with the Acer, it should still give you a good gaming experience with the 5650 not as powerful as the G53 but should be more portable with better battery life, much better choice for a student, then again i travel on the daily basis to hotel and airports with the G73JW.
-
Ok quick question, If I have the Asus G53-3DE which has the 3D infrared reciver built into the screen, If I want to use a 3D monitor with the laptop, will I have to buy a seperate external usb infrared 3D reciver?
-
Doesn't it transfer through HDMI 1.4 now?
-
Yep, as long as ur tv has a 1.4 hdmi
-
well yeah the capability of 3D through 1.4 is there, but we will need an xtra usb receiver to send the signal to the 3D glasses...dont we?
-
Just to share that I finally can meet my G53 in person for a great big hug. It shipped to san frans within a day with ups ground! What a big surprise! Thanks to Donald from PowerNotebook. Im so impressed with their high standard of workmanship. Honestly, Im quite worry my baby get injured since G53 exceptionally difficult to upgrade, but the truth it appears in mint condition, I cant even find a single scratch anywhere. Superb !!! The laptop works perfectly (PN technical team did a great job to inspect the machine thoroughly to avoid those out from box issues including physical damage, dead pixel , GSOD/BSOD etc).
Following are my spec & some tests :
Spec :
| Corei7-740QM | 6GB DDR3 | GTX 460M 1.5GB | FHD 1080 | 1.25 TB | Wireless N6200 |
Benchmarks (Ver 260.99):
High Performance Mode
3DMark Vantage : 8592(1280 X 1024)- Performance
PCMark Vantage : 6686 (1280 X 960)
3DMark 06 : 12743(1280 X 1024)
To sum up , I'm very pleased with this machine. The built quality, stealth fighter exterior design are outstanding, ultra bright screen, awesome gaming performance, velocity responsive backlit keyboard, extremely quiet under regular load, moderate weight and size for a portable gaming machine.
My only complain is the heat production , the gpu temperature reaches 90°C in Furmark test and touches 83°C after 5++ hours of games play (Medal of Honor 2010 & Darksiders with highest setting). However, I've ordered CM U2 notebook cooler and hope it does a good job. On the other hand, the webcam is inadequate and very poor quality.
Btw, I've got few questions that require your advice and help (Sorry for noob questions) :
- What's the highest average temperature gtx460m should be at to avoid overheating?
- Does G53 comes with 2 fans? Is there any specific way to monitor or control the fan speed? I've tried SpeeFan but it failed to detect any fan whereas Everest only can monitor CPU fan.
Thanks in advance!
Happy Halloween

First, Congrats!
- Laptop will not overheat, the highest gtx temp is 110c, that's when it shuts down, so a good temp would be 90s.
- Yes it has 2 fans, I honestly don't know, but I know that ASUS never lets us control them
, many people tried to do it with the g50... -
Even if it reached those degrees, I don't feel them at all and I game on my lap 100% of the time
Right now, I have:
- SC2 (running on ultra)
- C&C4 (installing)
- Utorrent (downloading)
- Vent
- FL Studio (massive plugins open)
- Firefox Tabs (x12)
- Chrome Tabs (x3)
- Steam (Downloading STO)
- Adobe Audition (sampling vocals)
- WMP (playing music)
- Fraps
...and I'm in bed. Feeling 0 heat on my legs. And yes, all these things are going on at once while I'm typing this
This machine is so damn good with heat. I haven't felt a touch of heat on my legs and I've been planted in the same spot for 3-4 hrs
PS: The two fans is a first for me. Usually they're all 1 fan on the right side of the machine that burn my leg, forcing me to place 1 leg on the left and 1 in the middle, making my gaming experience uncomfortable. Every company should incorporate this fan design ...I can't stress enough how amazing this fan design system is.
