Doesn't seem worth it given the current cost. The 460m is already a little more than the 5870, and the 470 runs even higher. Sort of an odd bird in my book.
-
I was tempted by the E17 for a while, as you can get it well specced for a good price these days. Then I started reading the horror stories about HP's build quality and defective units (not to mention the E17's notorious heat problems). Some people went through three laptops before giving up and buying something else. Those who have bad experiences tend to be louder than those with good, and of course many had no problems. But what about in a year? That laptop failure chart floating around the net puts HP laptop failure at around 1 out of 4 after a year; that's nuts.
Ultimately your decision, and the E14 is available for a really good price. I just think you'll end up paying for those savings down the road in tears and frustration.
-
It was a really tough decision and was hard for me to go through as well. To give the envy some props - It ran the games I tried on it fairly well, and that was with the radiance screen so it should do even better now that it comes with a 720p display standard. It's certainly not going to run crisis on max settings but you should be fine running starcraft2 on medium to high depending on what's happening on screen. The envy is also far more portable. The G53 was surprisingly large to me and has a fair amount of heft to it. It actually wouldn't fit in my current 15'' laptop backpack, so I'm glad it came with its on bag.
With the G53 you're getting significantly more power, and a lot more screen real estate (both with the actual size of the display and with the resolution). Cpu or gpu intensive programs will be much snappier on the ASUS, and I've been throwing 2-3gig log files at it for processing and it hasn't broken a sweat.
So I'd say with the Envy you get: Portable, light, average gaming ability, decent battery life. And with the G32: powerful, quieter, high res screen, superior gaming ability. -
hmmm i think 460 is still below the 5870, 470 is about on par with 5870, and only 480 managed to outrun 5870...
-
His/her statement was about the price of the video cards, not the performance ; )
-
oh, you're right. this is what i get from only doing quick read through the post: an error =]
sorry for that. =] -
Having the 5870m, I can say im pleased... However I do like the 460m better as far as the overclockability goes, and nvidia is a little less quirky. ATI is ahead of the game, literally.. but nVidia i still would rather have. I wish I could find a prettygood price on the 470m or 480m I would snatchit up and throw it in here
-
Overclocking all depends on luck, neither AMD or Nvidia is better. I run my OC @ 800/1125, and my memory limit is around 1200. But there are people who can run the HD5870 up to 1300 etc. Ryzeki can run his core up to 900, for me, my limit is around 860. And yet my 800/1125 performance is likely similar to his 900/1000 I'm guessing.
Same for 460M. Ken was able to overclock his a lot. But there are posts from users complaining they can't overclock much. That doesn't mean 460M is better or worse, just the luck of bin. -
I was reading in the HP section that overclocking slowly degrades your computers guts, so to speak, and if your laptop has a life expectancy of let's say 5 years, it will bring it down to 3-4 or maybe less. Is this a fact, or is someone just started fictitious rumours?

100% incorrect. there is not a shread of truth to that 5 year life rule. laptops life is measured in hours of on time instead of years. after 2000 hours of on time (24/7 for 6 months) typically most laptops are headed downhill unless maintenence is performed. now this 2000 hour rule can fluctuate up and down 1000 hours depending on envoronment and type of use. you can easily surpass 10,000 hours simply by taking care of your laptop. Laptop neglect accounts for most premature warranty rma. -
What would be considered maintenence?
-
Thanks you very much for clarifying this. I see alot of people (between this forum and gaming forums) say that overclock degrades laptops so It's nice to know that it doesn't
Dirty liars trying to scare everyone! I'm going to overclock then
So "taking care" would be
- Defragmentation
- Vent Cleaning
- Daily Internet Security Scans
- Vacuuming Hair/Dirt on Keyboard/Speakers
(and the obvious of not spilling juice allover the keys and dropping it on the ground lol)
What else do you consider "taking care of"?
The G53JW must life forever! Muhaha!

Just received mine (heck of an upgrade from my current Macbook Pro 9600GT). Some quick thoughts:
-Nice, sharp screen, but viewing angles are so so
-Keyboard is great, but there is flex
-Overall system speed feels nice and snappy
-Great looking chasis
Some Game Impressions
-Everyone has seen the 3DMark stuff, so;
-Set SC2 to Ultra, ran final mission at native full screen res (1920x1080). Average FPS 40; a few drops to the 30 range, many spikes above 50. One drop to 19 fps during a scripted sequence.
-The last in game cinematic (rendered by your graphics card) running 25-70 fps, mostly in the 50 range. Quite awesome. By comparison, my macbook pro (in windows via boot camp) had issues above medium quality. Again, settings Ultra / 1920x1080)
-Fallout 3 (not new vegas), all settings maxed; 4x AA / 8x AF. Didn't get the frame rate; played for 30 minutes (day and night). Frame rate was buttery smooth. Again @ 1920x1080.
-WOW
Icecrown (zone) FPS at 2x AA, Ultra Settings, 1920x1080: 50+ flying around
Grizzly Hills (zone) running / flying around - I picked this because of lots of trees, etc...average 35+.
Dalaran by the fountain - average 35+. I was pretty impressed by this. Some drops, but nothing below 25.
Dalaran Bank - 125+.
Civ 5 - dx10/11 mode, 1920x1080, settings all maxed; 2x AA. Don't have framerates, loaded some old saves; loading times are fine (not exceedingly slower than my Core i7:950 desktop - a little slower as expected). Frame rate is very playable. Not exceptional; but good. -
My Asus G1S in use for 3 years (yes, this means not 3 years of time-to-time or even 8 hours per day, but 3 whole years day-night except time while in metro\in car). No physical maintenance, software care only - laptop is in perfect condition (even battery still can handle it for 15 minutes, lol). Asus g51 is in use for 1,2 years, no single problem also. That's why i recommend and sell Asus products to everyone who needs them. Quality > all =)

I put in my order for a G53JW-3DE from Xotic today. Only fitting to purchase the stealth bomber with the USA flag imo. Only thing that could have made it better is lights in the exhaust ports.
Last gaming laptop before ordering this one was a P7811FX from Gateway, I will never purchase another gateway laptop. -
Overclocking in some way really degrades the life of your laptop. Overclocking produces more heat and as we know Heat is the bane of Computer components (CPU/GPU/RAM etc). And sometimes even with utmost care laptops breaks down.
-
atis 5650 is very capable card still, there are overclockers geting 10k 36mark06 with it and its an DX11 card. Were talking 15 inch and under here laptops, this is totally different segment of laptops then 15-17 inch desktop replacements.
The problems the envy 14 has are cosmetic only. This has no effect on the performance of the machine. Some have had the motherboard/cpu wine but this happens in a lot of laptops. The envy line is a beautiful line and very good laptop and when they had the radiance screen is was the best laptop out there for public consumers for home use in my opinion out of all the laptops but that radiance display has been discontinued to a later date. The envy 14 is that type of laptop that tons of people buy, more so then all the other laptops and when this happens its gets scrutinized more so then others and its tiniest flaws get blown out of proportion. -
My only complaint so far is the audio output to my speakers was really bad, everything sounded muffled and compressed. I tried messing with the equalizer for an hour or so but couldn't come up with anything decent. My solution so far has just been to uninstall the realtek drivers completely, which helped a lot, but I obviously loose a number of controls. This weekend I'll try some different versions of the driver and I'll also install the creative driver and see how they work.
Edit - averaging 90-120fps in left4dead2, all settings maxed at native resolution, 2 or 4x AA. -

Try this:
Control Panel>sort by small icons>Sound. Then select Speakers and click on Properties. Click the Enhancement tab and make sure Loudness and Loudness Equalizer (If you have both of them) are both checked. Then either set Loudness Equalizer at Powerful in the dropdown, or play around with other selection there in the dropdown. -
Thanks for the tip. I tried it with my default sound drivers and noticed a change, but I'll have to play around with it once I update to the newest realtek or creative versions. It actually sounds pretty good with the default MS setup (better than how it shipped to me), and I can adjust treble/bass through my speakers so its all good at the moment.
Edit- ps. I'm not sure how long you've been into gaming but every time I see you post I automatically think of this avatar (old reference):
-
The nighthawk stealth bomber is no longer in use =(
-
That's actually a stealth fighter, which G53 is. The stealth bomber: http://www.sinj.com/the-hermit-tarot/images/stealth-bomber-fighter.jpg with supposedly the stealth fighters behind it lolz.
-
@dookie11
I think he's referring to the F-117 Nighthawk on the picture which retired 2008 and Asus got the design from the F-117. -
Tis still a fighter, not a bomber
F=Fighter, B=Bomber, according to wiki
Anyhoo, still waiting on my cc to come. Hopefully this decision gets easier come next week
EDIT: HA! Coupon code for E14 is dead. If they don't come out with another one by end of this month, G53 izzit. -
Oh Yeah lol Maybe a Multi-Role Fighter xD. Evil advice take the G53 and never look back
-
If all goes as planned, my machine will be here tommorow!!!
how come noone has done an unboxing yet? -
Metallic did a 60~ pic documentary, which is equal to unboxing
My camera was 3MP and my place has awful lightning, so that's why I didn't do one. -
Is there a dedicated thread for asus g53 owners?

lol, you know how it is...
When your computer is on its way, you want to grab every possible glimpse of it. Allthough this effect did die abit because I had to wait soooo long for this computer. -
Probably going to regret this because it'll be sold out before I get to buy mine, but Newegg now has the G53JW-A1 on sale and in stock. $1449+$10 shipping.
Newegg.com - ASUS G Series G53JW-A1 NoteBook Intel Core i7 740QM(1.73GHz) 15.6" 6GB Memory DDR3 1333 750GB HDD 7200rpm DVD Super Multi NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M
This model has the 750GB drive FYI. -
Nice info, thanks
Well.. you don´t get the free memory upgrade xoticpc or gentech has, but still it's nice to know it FINALLY arrived at newegg by the same price -
It's popping up in stock all over the place now. I really hope Xotic and GenTech get their shipments in soon for all us poor custom orders!
-
Umm... Ken, I tried with my G51J, but after removing the screws at the back of the keyboard, I found that the aluminum foil is glued to the keyboard. Not sure if this is also true to the G53/G73 models...
Now, my question is, is it safe to "rip" the aluminum foil apart? I'm kinda nervous if I'll break something sensitive in the keyboard... -
Hahhahaha, it's out of stock already....
-
Yes the aluminum foil also glued on G53/G73, you just have to carefully pull it out and it's safe to do it, it won't damage the keyboard or the backlight.
-
Yes you do. Free upgrade to 8GB.
And that's hilarious @ the NewEgg link. Man do these units ever sell FAST! -
Still in stock at TigerDirect! I'll hold out for my GenTechPC order though.

I'm not interested in SB what so ever, it's nothing new, it's the one after SB it's going to be a whole new architecture... not just a lazy upgrade... SB still doesn't have usb 3.0 support. -
yes!!!! i am on my new machine typing away!
I love the Keyboard and I like the mouse pad as well.
Uninstalling applications now and burning recovery DVDs -
Looks like next shipment won't arrive on the 8th, new ETA is Nov. 15/16.
-
Noooooo =(((((((
-
Thank you, Ken.
Great, I think I'll give it a try then...
And oh, I don't need to glue them back after I put the colored film, right? -
Then mine will also be delayed
. Oh well thanks for the heads up ken.
-
lol i remember i posted, "wouldn't it be funny if this second batch was delayed again," some time ago. It's not that funny anymore =/
-
Your right, it isn't funny anymore. =\
This actually just ruined my day(it is the end of my day over here). I wish I would have seen this earlier, now I have to go to sleep and have nightmares about delays after delays after delays after delays in a never ending spyral.
Seriously, Asus, what is going on!?!?! It's starting to feel like some sort of mind game that is being dealt, meanwhile they are over laughing it up while we rage... probably thinking about when to schedule the next delay...
I'm gonna go play some violent video games to relieve my distress...
Spyral SMASH -
Makes me feel like Tantalus. So close, and moved out of reach whenever it gets close.
So if all the shipments get shifted that means their 'Big' shipment will miss the Christmas season (or be REALLY close)
Ahh well I might yet get mine before Thanksgiving (fingers crossed). -
Damn it must suck to wait for your new laptops. Mine took 2 weeks and I was pretty stressed from the wait despite it only being a 2 week wait! xP
