I recommend Microsoft Security Essentials - Free and resource/Windows Friendly..
Had problems with the Free Version of AVG and other applications.

I second this.
-
And surprisingly effective. This is what I typically use if given the choice. (i.e., outside of my work environment).
-
I recommend MSE or Avast. Avast has a slightly higher detection rate though, so I personally use Avast. It's a barely discrenable difference though, so either is great. I might actually try out MSE right now, cause the Avast interface is kinda iffy IMO.
http://www.av-comparatives.org/images/stories/test/ondret/avc_od_aug2010.pdf
Check this out. MSE has a 98% detection rate and Avast has a 99% detection rate. Avast is faster in on-demand scanning speed. I would personally recommend it more than MSE. -
i would recommend Avast for your antivirus solution. it's fast, secure, and consume little resources...
-
+1 for Avast and Avira. Avg got me to reformat before(AVG 8.5 won't uninstall completely).
-
wow getting under to install SSDs is quite the hassle, that palmrest is almost impossible to get off, when i finally got it off i found out that i broke some of the hinges =/
-
wax pencil can you take detailed pictures of the underside of the palm rest and a small guide so that others who end up openign their computer do not end up with broken parts as well?
Did you unlock the sliding lock part before taking the palmrest off? -
It didn't seem to have a sliding lock, still dunno how to exactly take it off and I can't really try since it's broken, all I did was used a little superglue to get it back on, I'll have to resnap it for repairs
Crap nvm lol i'm so stupid, forgot about the latch -
Interesting, per that report Avira is superior to both Avast and MSE. However, the report only deals with known threats, and was run on XP SP3. I'm curious to know what the results would be under Windows 7 and/or facing unknown and novel threats (supposedly contained in a forthcoming report). I came from Norton, which is a horrid, slow, bloated piece of... software, so any of those three is an improvement.
-
AVG all day errday. Avast is good too, but if I remember correctly it lagged my comp due to popups and wat not. Or is that Avira with all the popups?
MSE is great, but remember, it comes from MS so be careful what you install/dl to your comp cuz they might be spying on you! -
If you want an antivirus that comes with a firewall - try COMODO
Not sure about the antivirus, but the firewall is pretty solid and you get 2 packages out of a deal.
Just go for the free version though. The professional/premium version actually will make any comp lag (not to mention it is not free)
But if you are really paranoid, an antivirus is not going to be enough, get a firewall and spybot + adaware to deal with spyware that are not treated as viruses by your antivirus. -
Thanks guys I tried AVG IS
will try Avast
-
Just get Microsoft's Security Essentials. The other free versions just don't match up as well. They other free ones get a lot more false positives which I think is really annoying. MSE detection rate is admirable. Really the only reason NOT to use MSE is if you are using a premium like Eset NOD32. Unless you are using NOD32, forget everything else.
And really, why anyone is so paranoid about having best firewall, best this, best that... Understandable if you have a corporate network to protect or if you are carrying around sensitive data. If it's just your personal use laptop, I think it's overboard. Can personally say, from watching tons of anime, playing tons of PC Games, browsing numerous forums, trying tons of mods and exchanging tons of information, I haven't had a virus on my PC since 1995 when I just started using Windows 95. I am of the opinion, if you get a virus with MSE installed, especially NOD32, you deserve it. -
I've tried all the free ones and found Avira to be the best. It had the smallest memory footprint of any antivirus I've used, and has been rated number 1 for the past two years for its detection and heuristics engine. The full system scan also runs quickly, and updates are delivered every 1 to 2 days.
-
I may give Avira a try once my new laptop comes in just to compare. The fewer system resources my AV hogs the better. Couldn't stand Norton for that reason alone.

So I have been lurking on this forum for a while and decided that the g53 is for me. I think I am going to order mine from newegg once is available because I can do 12 months no interest so i can actually afford this thing. But I got a few question that either I missed the answers to or haven't been able to find. Gaining access to the internal components looks annoying but I think I can handle it no problem?
Anyone got a good tutorial for the keyboard back light mod?
what is the ram configuration on the 6gb model?
Will I be able to buy a bracket for a SSD at some point?
What is going to be the best way to get my os back on the SSD when I decide to make the jump? I have ghosted from a small to a big hd in 7 before and it gave me a hell of a time about my licence.
Anyone know that website that tells you what bloatware to remove?
Thanks -

Got a nice surprise today.
No complaints there.

omg I got mine shipped on teh 10th, and apparently wont be to be till the 17th. Travelling from Toronto to BC.
Which really sucks cause one it was "expedited shipping", 2 I'v shipped things across the pacific with general post and its taken less time... =(
Still hoping it will turn up Monday or Tuesday... Knowing my luck it wont arrive till friday tho... ~_^
wish me luck! -
In case anyone is having the same problem, the Atheros wireless adapter on my G53 wasn't working at all and I did a driver rollback in the device manager and that fixed the problem.
-
good luck, +rep LOL.

3 more days....

Till what?
EDIT: Also, anyone know if the Amazon ones are really 1066mhz for the RAM (they're listed as so, but maybes its a typo?), rather than 1333 like the ones sold on xoticpc? -
Immunet - FREE Fast Companion Antivirus free for me in-conjunction with any other Av of your choice, which for me personally I'm also using OA++.
Immunet always is the first to pick up anything suspicious seconds before anything else I have used, and it seems to be light on resources.
Cheers
John -
Mine came with 1333mhz ram.
-
Both XA1 models suppose to come with 1066 memory, and i think some might come with it, but atm the both G73JW-XA1 came with 1333.
Did you get G53JW- XA1, just wondering, my friend hasn't seen it in stock, so just wondering. -
Sorry, I wasn't specific. My G53JW-A1 came with 1333s. Though Amazon's listings say both the XA1 and A1 come with 1066 memory.
-
Must be typo, they all comes with 1333.

A productive week towards acquiring my G53.
I received my shipping notice from GenTech and the parcel has departed the US for Euroland. Fantastic pre-sales support from Ken, definitely a fan of GenTech and will be using them again.
** Near term modifications **
Keyboard: Have ordered a UK keyboard from asusparts.eu to swap the US one out. Lead time was about 3 weeks from ordering to shipment. Not too bad considering the CN to SE to UK shipping route. Gentech was kind enough to confirm they would leave the original US keyboard un-taped to make the swap easier.
ODD: Will be swapping the DVD drive to a USB optical enclosure and adding an additional 500GB of storage for a total of 1.75 TB (750GB + 500GB + 500GB). I originally planned for an SSD but my need for additional space for dual booting into my work environment takes precedence. Caddies and enclosure from ebay, 500GB 7200rpm installed by Gentech, and 500GB Scorpio Blue from work (Amazon.co.uk). Eventually will switch to a NAS but the performance is simply too slow for long Kernel compiles.
WIFI: I have a spare Intel 6200 lying around that I will swap the default card for if its not Intel. I need clean driver support under Linux to ease my Kernel work and don't like futzing about with B43 or STA.
Memory: Kindly upgraded to 8GB by GenTech.
** Longer term (Maybe) **
CPU: I have a spare 840qm that I may or may not install depending on how far I want to risk things. Perhaps with next years SSD refreshes I will sell this and attempt to pickup a nice and large SSD. -
mine has arrived had it a few days now, heres the spec of the one i bought

So I think amazon and provantage list the G53's as having 1066mhz memory. Are they both typos then? So it's really 1333 fer shizzle?
-
My guess is they are suppose to be 1066, but as with the JH there was a shortage on 1066 memory and most came with 1333mhz, even bestbuy editions, but there were some that did came with 1066, so my guess is that amazon posts 1066 just in case the batch they got has it, but both of my G73JW-XA1 came with 1333 memory (the first one was defective the second i just got but its working great).
-
get it from a Reseller here
Try GenTechPC -
hello,
I am in london and is interested in buying g53jw. I couldnt find any within uk sellers and saw some of you guys have bought from Gentech pc and get delivered to uk. Just wondering about the import taxes you might had to pay?
Thanks -
No import duties for computers in the UK, just VAT. The UK models of the G53's should be available shortly but the prices seem to be roughly 1500£. Even paying full VAT the US model from GenTech will cost about 1000£ plus 175£ VAT. That's significantly cheaper than buying locally.
I would send Ken at GenTech a PM or email and see if he can help.
Even if the models are coming with different spec'd Memory Amazon will generally list it based on the manufacturers information. ASUS in this case is telling Amazon that specific model of the G53 comes with 1066 but is shipping with faster memory. This seems to happen a lot with ASUS and MSI. More recently MSI has had several incidents of shipping models spec'd with 6 gigs of RAM with 8. Nobody seems to complain.
-
Hello,
Thanks, But when I checked the 3d model it cost 1799USD +for BluerayRW its 119+ shipping 129USD whole together 2047USD, when I convert it to POUNDS via paypal its 1236GBP roughly + adding 17.5 tax its gonna be more than the UK price. ?? I am confused. Please help and I cant either pm coz am new for the forum, if you can let me know someone's email to discuss that would be great. Thanks -
My price was for the non-3d model.
-
Hi,
Have you already received your NB by now? Please confirm how much you paid for taxes and how long it took for delivery? -
Was down in Tampa, Florida this week and checked out CompUSA down here (now owned by Tigerdirect) and they had the G53 on display sitting next to the G73, was really cool machine. I'm still not sure I'd pick it over my G73, but would definitely consider it.
They had them in stock and ready to pick up for anyone around this part of Florida and wants to see and play with one on display. -
Another long tiring week. But at least I was able to kick back at the end of it and forget all my worries, including the g53. But now that the work/school week has commenced...
Here's to hoping my order is in this next batch.
-
The package is currently in transit I'll let everyone know how long it took to get here and what condition it is in when it arrives. GenTech has contact information on their website it would be much better to ask them about prices shipping times taxes/etc.
-
Eh..Getting closer..
-
Hey guys. I'm new here and this is my first post.
I'm really interested in the new Asus G53 laptop, however I'm located in Latvia (Eastern Europe). Does places like gentechpc, xoticpc or powernotebooks offer shipping to Europe? If so, how much does it cost?
Also, did any of you pre-ordered it from Europe? How much tax did you have to pay upon arrival? -
Just ordered an G53 (i5 460M, GTX 460M, 4GB ram, 1x 500GB 7200rpm, 1366x768 standard ty screen) for 1100E here in Romania. God I hate this country... I'll report back as soon as Im done putting my F60 Corsair inside it.
Question: can this notebook be upgraded from i5 to i7? Im thinking about changing the cpu with a i7 720QM. What type of socket does it have? BGA1288(ball) or PGA988(pin)? Thanks! -
Interesting, didn't know there were i5 versions, so we might see a super water down bestbuy version someday. On the G60JX you could upgrade from i5 to i7q, so i would assume so, but its best to check with Asus and see if the bios of your laptop supports it.
-
Yeah first i5 version I have seen too. Well assuming the motherboard is the same on all of the g53's I don't see why it wouldn't work. The official specs list both i3 and i5 as supported.
BTW I posted a little guide to accessing the ram/hard drives etc. if you didn't see it: http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...bling-g53jw-installing-second-hard-drive.html -
Just thought I'd remind those that have it to register for their 1 year accidental within 30 days or it will be voided. I know most here have done it but sometimes people forget or are new and just plain out didn't know.
ASUS Accidental Damage Warranty -
Ive removed the keyboard. How the hell do I remove the rest pad? PLEASE HELP. IM STUCK!!!!!!!
-
Stege, see this post:

There is a screw you need to loosen and slide near the lower left corner of the keyboard tray.
