IMO USB 3.0 shoudln't be a very strong deciding factor. I wouldn't mind having it on a system, but it's not going to help you run games any better, can probably be added later through a PC Card if you really wanted it, and probably won't shorten the useful life of a system. Having a GPU that's less than half as powerful as on another system will obviously have a really huge effect on how long the system will be useful.
-
Whoops, half my post was chopped off. I also mentioned that you haven't said what n6jq you're comparing it to. The higher end versions of that model do have a better, quad core CPU, but the lower end one that sells for the same price as the G61jx has the exact same CPU-the only difference being the G60jx's GPU is more than twice as powerful.

The more I study about G60-JX and its restart and bsod issue, the more I think it is the audio and nvidia driver issue. G60 has intel HD audio on it by default, but at same time it disable that and use the Soundblaster Audigy software on it. NOW! with the New Nvidia video driver on it, it also came with HD AUDIO driver for its HDMI out. It would make sense that 3 audio driver may have caused the conflict and crash the computer over and over.
I have used CPUID and monitored temperature and use all cpu meter at addgadget.com to monitor the cpu and ram usage. I have also used MEMTEST to check on ram errors which yielded none. The New 206 BIOS really did the magic and solved it. It has been on for over 24 hours with game play, video, download, everything with no error. GTS 360m top out at 76C for me and idled at night at 41C for me, everything running buttery smooth.
Core i7 430m really is better in game than i7 720qm I had before. Quad is more but only at 1.6 ghz while i5 430 is at 2.27 ghz. There is a noticeable speed advantage when loading game for i5. -
finally i have sony bravia 40'' w5500 fullhd lcd tv,if i buy asus g60jx,will i play games and watch movies full hd(1080p) resolution on this tv?if you were me,which laptop would u buy g60jx or n61jq? i hope you ll understand
-
The G60. The 5730 isn't as powerful as the card in the G60. You're not going to be maxing out Crysis with full AA at native resolution or anything, but it'll still look pretty good.

You seem to have your heart set on the N61jq cause you are asking the same question. If cpu is important for you go for it, If you want output on 1080p tv and game, G60JX's video capability is much better. -
thanks howard, sorry for my absurd questions
-
But again, you haven't said which N61jq you're looking at. Regardless of the model, the G60jx is better for games, but the low end N61jq has the exact same CPU as the G60jx. For the same price, you're getting a better GPU. If you're getting a higher end N61jq, then you're paying more, and still getting a worse GPU.
-
I think that the N61jq comes with i7 720qm as standard, the one that comes with the same cpu as the G60jx is the N61J V, then again so many countries have different versions that idk if thats 100% sure. But i agree with all the above posts, if gaming is a priority G60JX is better option, if you doing heavy CPU tasks like video or audio encoding and don't care much about gaming, then N61JQ is a better option.
-
Ah, you're probably right. I'm getting confused because Sheva never originally specified which model it is-and of course if you're comparing ones in the same price range, the G60 beats the N61 in every way.
The quad is great if you don't care about gaming...but then if you're spending more to get a higher end N61, you could also spend more and get some other system too. -

No worry bro, even tho I5 is duo core but it has 4 threads ,so its pretty capable for lots of day to day tasks and you can overclock it with Asus software easily. G series is a pretty good middle of the road compromise. If you intend to keep it for 2-3 years, try to shell out a bit more for these two

thanks everyone ,if i bothered you im sorry

how can i underclock my GPU? sometimes it stays at 135MHz, but even in battery saver mode it goes up to 550MHz
I tried MSI Afterburner but i can't go lower than 405MHz
Any ideas? -
Anyone having a problem with a "click" sound when you move the screen... it sounds like something is cracked on the side of the screen but when I went back to the store to check the display model it did the same thing.
I am debating returning it all together, but they do not have any more in the store. Let me know your thoughts... -
Check the following threads,

I have the same "click" on the left side of the display. It seems it is a design flaw. But it doesnt matter for me...
The G60-jx is a great Notebook -
So I'm picking my G60JX up in a few hours just wondering if I should do any important updates like bios etc out of the box? I also heard I should disable/uninstall some audio drivers because they conflict with other installed software bios.
While I'm at it what sort of cooler should I get? Thanks everyone
.
-
Maybe get the 2.6 Bios. You dont have to uninstall any audio drivers just disable cmss-3d in your creative driver. It works fine for me now.
-
Just wanted to say the G60JX is a great notebook. I haven't had any problems yet and I've installed a dozen or so games (love Steam) played for a few hours straight with no heating issues. I honestly don't think I even need a cooler, I guess that could be a effect from keeping my house at a constant 60F. I love how the notebook doesn't scream gamer like so many of Asus/Alienware models do, it's fairly discreet in design but stylish at the same time. At $899 this is a steal, even with adding on a Squaretrade warranty..*

first post -
i'll start by commending the users here, lots of great information.
Picked up a G60Jx this weekend from bestbuy. I have to say, I'm very impressed with the power this thing has. I have never used a laptop that was as powerful as a desktop before.
I swapped out the factory drive w/ a 320 WD black (7200rpm, 16mb) and loaded my vlite treated copy of OEM x64 7. I downloaded all the asus utilities - i'm VERY happy with "Power4gear".
I plan on dropping a SSD (60 or 120g vertex) and (at least) an i5 540m. I would love a 620m but I can't seem to find any online.
I will comment though, when plugged in Power4Gear lets you utilize the turbo multi 24/7. LOVE IT.
does anyone know if you can disable hyperthreading? -
Also consider Intel X25m, no problems what so ever with it in 8 months.
You can probably get it cheaper in Ebay, but just in case,
Intel Core i7 620M - OEM $364
Intel Core I5-540M Cpu $265 -
Abula always has wise words.
Great find on the OEM CPU's, the 620M is reasonable at that price.
EBAY has ES 620M's starting around $275 if you want to save some money. -
I have been using this laptop for a while now. I am happy with it. Off course they droppped the price a little over 2 weeks after I bought it.
I manly use it for internet and gaming. The most demanding game I have played is Battlefield bad company2. Runs very well.
The screen's viewing angles are very mediocre. Not much of a concern for me. I am usually the only one watching it.
Buidl quality seems very good. I travel a lot, we will see how it holds up, I'll keep you posted.
The left palmrest gets warm, if you take out the dummy express card it stays a lot cooler.
I am happy with mine. What is best program to monitor temperatures and where can I find this turbo mode(is this a separate download?)
Thanks guys, I'll keep you informed about this heavy thing. -
thanks for the input guys. I ended up going with a 60g vertex, i5 540m and some CL5 hyperX 1066 DDR3. I'm not sure if the ram will do anything for me on the performance front or not, but it give me something to play around with. the stock 2x2 kit is CL7 (lame).
this thing is gonna be flying when i'm done w/ it
-
! I just picked up mine up and I tried to update the BIOS like everyone says needs to be done. I got the blue screen seconds into the update and now my laptop powers on but black screen. Anyone have any idea what the hell happened? I tried to flash with Bios 206 on the Asus website. Strike 2 for Asus......
Thanks guys. -
I am not updating bios, unless I have issues. What method did you use?
-
Hello everyone, my first post here.
A few days ago, I discovered the G60VX available at Tigerdirect.com which goes for $750 - ASUS G60VX-RBBX05 Refurbished Notebook PC - Intel Core 2 Duo P7450 2.13GHz, 4GB DDR2, 320GB HDD, DVDRW, 16" TFT Display, Windows 7 Home Premium, Blue at TigerDirect.com
I just saw this thread today, and was wondering if the slight increase in price on the BestBuy model was worth the upgraded hardware. -
The newer Bestbuy model is $899 and comes with 1 yr support and the i5 CPU @ 2.26 with 2.53 boost and a 500GB HD. While still dual core it is better than the older refurb which usually only come with 90 days of support.
For the addl $150 I'd get the new unit.
Cheers, -
Hey Panzer06, thank you for the reply.
Will most likely get the JX then.
-
How do you get the CPU to boost, do I have to activate that?
-
New i core cpu's do it automatically
-
if you use a different copy of an OS Vs the factory bestbuy loadout, the driver "Intel Turbo Boost Technology" needs to be loaded for the CPU to enter turbo mode. the driver can be downloaded from Asus's website.
-
So with stock OS it will do it automatically?
Also what are you guys using for temp monitor program? -
Check to Power4Gear options?
I have to "old" model VX and it OC's it there.
Not sure if the JX does. -
can anyone tell me what exactly the turbo/extreme turbo in power4gear hybrid do? is it safe to leave on all the time?
-
FSB + 8 MHz. (Stock: 133 MHz / Extreme-Turbo: ~ 141 MHz)
Maximum stock-clock of my 820QM is at 3066 MHz, with Extreme-Turbo at ~ 3243 MHz. -
i did some looking, i think the "extreme turbo" mode in power4gear is chip bound. IE: Asus says yes to some, but not all chips. when my g60jx had the 430m in it, I only had "turbo" when i dropped the 540m I had a new option for "extreme"
-
thats weird i got the extreme option on mine with the 430
-
oh man the hard drive you placed into the Jx is smaller then the Seagate it comes with. The seagate is 500gb 7200rpm and 16mb cache! I looked up the model number of the drive in my laptop and you just down graded to a smaller drive dude!
-
For some reason many people prefer the WD Black drives to their Seagate counterparts. I personally can't really tell the difference, though many of my Mac using friends prefer the WD.
Cheers, -
lol,i know that the drive is smaller. right now i have a 60g vertex in the laptop.
this is personal opinion: WD > Seagate -
i bought a wd black 320gb a little bit ago also but use that one in my g60vx since the g60Jx does not support raid from Best Buy atleast. I use the WD in Raid 0 to combine the drives into one on g60vx and its drive
-
I can't find real benchmarks for this laptop anywhere! (FPS on various games, application and multitask performance, etc.)
I was going to buy this laptop (G60JX-RBBX05) on Wednesday but know I'm unsure... -
does anyone know if you can disable hyper-threading on the i5 or i7 series chips?
-
Not sure why you would want to? If anywhere it is going to be in the BIOS.
I just bought this laptop 3 hours ago!
Quick question, since the manual fails at life...
What do the top buttons do on the keyboard?
I see the 3 lights(HD, caps, num) and then the threee soft buttons? what does each do? and then the one directly to the left of the power button? I could not get it to do anything lol -
Need the dimensions of the box it comes packed the notebook, because I will buy at bestbuy in new york and from there sent me to Chile.
For this need the dimensions of the box to calculate the cost of shipping to my country
Excuse my English
Thanks -
Sup Asus G60JX owners. So far pretty happy with this laptop. Was looking for a laptop for school, bought the samsung R480 (liked the style and size) from bestbuy but soon returned it when I realized the GPU sucked (wanted a laptop that could do the school stuff and still be able to play the new games). So bounced on this Asus because it was a gaming laptop under 1,000 bucks. So far only downside is the size and weight, and also when i play games at ultra settings e.g. starcraft II beta, my left hand gets so hot it begins to leave sweat marks but from reading I hear a cooling pad might help with this.
Just a few pointers for people who just bought this laptop at 899.99 from bestbuy. As soon as you boot it up and start using it, go to the nvidia website and update your GTS 360M card driver (i've read from other people that they had some locking up/freezing issues because they didn't do this) and also, for some odd reason my laptop came with the realtek audio drivers installed and the soundblaster legacy audio drivers both installed (also read this can cause problems) so went into device manager and it had the nvidia HD sound hardware and realtek hardware so i just uninstalled the Soundblaster Legacy driver. Everyone seems to complain about the speakers not being loud enough but is it that hard to use headphones or hook up external speakers... idk
.
Oh yea and i've also read at this forum that people didn't like the LCD display (not high enough res. and one guy also said the colors weren't rich and deep compared to his other laptop.) I found it useful to go into the Nvidia Control panel go to the Video Color settings, and under color tick the "with nvidia settings" and set your saturation higher. This made the colors in my Anime movies appear more resilient and colorful. Not an expert on this but you can dink around with the settings (have a video playing so you can see the changes, not sure if it changes color quality in game though.)
Overall, performance is great, but a little big and heavy to be lugging to school when I want to. (i just noticed my spacebar key is sqeaking as I type this... ne one else's have a sqeaky spacebar?
) GL n' HF with your asus, I know i will.

I can get the dimensions tonight if you rep me
...though the best buy site should have theM
