So after reading all 15 pages of this thread it sold me on this laptop and I went and got it from Best Buy yesterday. I can't believe no one has commented about the screen on this thing as it F'ing blows. I'm already convinced I'm going to return it and eat the restocking fee, it's that bad.
If I set my background to a solid black color, it's more gray then black. If I tilt the screen back there is actually a spot were it's only slightly gray on the top and bottom and would probably be OK, but the screen is tilted back more than it should be now and makes it hard to read the upper portions of the screen. Decreasing the brightness of the LCD actually seems to only compound the gray overlay factor.
I've messed around with the nVidia color settings and the Windows 7 monitor calibration and nothing gets it to look the way it should. My fiance has a 2.5 year old mid-range Dell XPS laptop next to me and the screen is 100% better when comparing side-by-side to this. On top of all of this, I find in games and when scrolling in the web browser that there is a terrible ghosting effect.
It really bums me out because everything everyone has said about the performance is true. The processor and GPU have performed great. But how has no one else noticed the screen?![]()
-
my screen is just fine, perhaps it is just your particular one
-
The one I messed with at Best Buy (which was running a demo video) looked great! That's unusual that yours is like that.
-
Here are some pics I just took with my phone. The first one is the with the lid at what I would consider a "normal" viewing angle. The second one is with the screen tilted too far back. The phone does exaggerate the effect a little, but not much.

Sorry your screen is not up to par with what you expected... I dont have any ghosting while playing games or browsing the web ... and the viewing angles on most gaming laptops these days have below average viewing angles or will wash out if you tilt the screen too far back or too far forward... my screen definitely has a sweet spot where I get solid blacks and no washing out... but this sweet spot is only about 2-3 degrees total and its just above a 90 degree angle when open.
What were you using as a display before this laptop? Another gaming laptop? I think this screen is a huge upgrade over my 2 previous gaming laptops screens (p6860 fx and p7805 u gateways) which were complete garbage .. the hardware performance on them were great, just crappy lcd screens. Maybe thats why this one looks and performs so much better in my own opinion.
*and I think if you return/exchange the lappy within 14 days no restocking.. 45 days for rz premier silver* -
Has anybody tested the battery life on this rig? If so, can you please post the numbers! Thx!

I bought one last night from the best buy here. After playing with it for several hours there are a few things I'm not liking.
1. Bad bounce do to lack of support on the keyboard around the number 4 key.
2. Screen colors are way off. Try to adjust but still looks off. (wife agrees with me also)
3. very poor owners manual
4. new Logitech mouse just won't work right. Keeps loosing the double click.
5. wish I could have got Win7 32bit instead.
Other then those I listed above it's an overall very nice laptop. I'll play with it for a couple more days and then decide if I keep it.
Not a problem for me but the G60Jx is one heavy laptop. -
Can a bluetooth moduel be installed in this laptop internally or would i need an external usb dongle thingy?..
-
Just picked up one a few hours ago. I have to say I am very impressed with it so far. My screen looks just fine.
-
-
-
*edit* sorry I misread your first post, slight bounce near my Y and T - barely.. But Yes there is a pretty good amount of bounce near the 4 key above the letters - I dont type very hard so I had to give it a little pressure to see it.
2. I agree, screen colors were off a bit compared to my recently return G60VX - that was calibrated very well out of the box!
3. Is this your first laptop? Last 3 modern core 2 duo laptops I've purchased (toshiba, gateways) ALL included a CD for an owners manual... no big suprise there. Why is an owners manual such a big deal? I'm still not getting this...
4. Logitech mouse? Are you using the pointsec software? I hate point sec, I dont use any logitech software because I've had bugs with it in the past.. all of my G9 mouse buttons work ... I doubt this has anything to do with the lappy...
5. Why would you want 32bit win 7 instead? How does that help your performance with such a good i5 processor???
I'm sorry but I dont see any real problems with this laptop other than I'm greedy and I want G73 power in a 16" notebook.. and the G60JX comes pretty darn close (look at pages 7-12 for performance benchmarks/tests) -
Just bought mine 2 days ago. Im happy with it, plays Crysis with all setting at high with 2x AA perfectly. My old Q6600 2x8800Gt's couldnt handle that back in 07. I bought this laptop just to see if it could play Crysis with good settings.
2 questions, what Nvidia driver is everybody using?
Also I cant get any overclocking utilities to work, RIvatuner, Atitool, N-tune wont install. Is this a factory driver issue?
THanks Guys! -
http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Scan.aspx?lang=en-us
I just tried installing NTune as well - no bueno! ... error says my mobo or chipset isnt supported. -
On the keyboard there are three touch-sensitive hotkeys to the left of the power button. From right-to-left three is the touchpad disable, the Power4Gear hotkey, and then one other. What is that for? I've uninstalled some of the asus software so I'm assuming it was for one of those, but I'm curious.
-
Yea it just freezes on me during install.
-
Double post
-
Hey, so I've just read all 17 pages, and I hate to say it but I'm iffy on buying this now.
The washed out colors,
the temps ( I'm not sure but 88 seems high for a gpu. Yes, no?)
Only one HDD
No expandable ram
And no ASUS warrenty
I think I'll save some more and spring for something else. If it was for those issues we'd have one good $999 lappy.
Thanks for the advice everyone. You stopped me from possibly making a very dumb decision. -

I'm still investigating exactly how well the i5/360m combo stands against the C2D/260m team, but 88C isn't horrible for an unmodded RoG system. -
Dual HDD bay's aside I think the C2D and 260GTX you get better performance.
Not much but still better. With the G60-JX you lose the Turbo function that's in the G60-VX.Even when the i5 Turbo's itself it doesn't get as far as my T9900 also the 360M is weaker than even the under clocked 260 GTX found in the G60-VX.I could be wrong but i think it would be a wash in real world usage.
Was thinking of giving the G60-VX to my bro and getting the JX myself but I think it would be a lateral move and not gain anything but slightly cooler temps but mine already runs cooler after re-applying paste (ICD7)

I guess I'm confused as to how the vx will get better performance out of the box... Yes upgrading the cpu helps the vx's score but I'm sure so would upgrading to an i7 on the jx
I too am looking for an advantage the GPU on the vx has over the jx, just havent seen anything else on this forum other than 3dmark06 scores... if anyone out there has better or more accurate data please share it with us
*edit* i'll gladly run more tests on the jx, let me know what other tests I can download -
No need to run more tests.
Don't get me wrong I think the JX is great stock, probably better than the VX all I'm saying is after all my mods it would be pointless to get this model if I don't gain anything.
I think you get a higher stock 3DMARK06 score cause of the i5. -
Just ran 3dmark 06 on mine...
All stock settings with Asus Hybrid on Performance. GPU Settings all stock.
10,317
With CPU on Extreme Turbo and GPU at 650/1606/1880
11,525.
All drivers stock out the box, Nvidia settings all stock.
http://service.futuremark.com/home.action -
Nice Phased! Good to know what a little performance boost will do for the jx!
I'm keeping my gpu and cpu all stock for now, since I'm still getting used to how warm this thing gets under load. I should note that my Power4Gear Hybrid settings are on High Performance while plugged in.
I'd still like to see stock G51 i7 w/gtx260m vs stock G60jx i5 w/gts360m benches -
Thanks. Im sure with the Nvidia settings all set to performance I would score even better. Not to mention better drivers.
I think all said and done and setup correctly this could be a 13K machine!!
I would like to see come comparable 260Gtx/G51 scores also. -
I wouldn't bet on that.
-
Hi All,
can I get a quick confirmation?
Am I right in thinking that the new G60-Jx has only 1 harddrive bay, while the previous G60-Vx from best buy had space for 2 hard drives?
And did the older G60-Vx have the overheating BSOD problems that I heard about for the G51s?
(I want a gaming notebook, and am currently considering the Jx, or the Vx for $150 cheaper, or a Sager for much much more.
THanks -

Best Buy is lame. I went to take a look at the G60JX and although they had one in stock, they only had the G60VX on display because the JX is too new. As such, the only way I could look at the JX was buy it and return it within 30 days (although I would have to pay the 15% restocking fee if I returned it). I spoke to the store manager and he didn't know when they would put it on display, and wasn't helpful otherwise.
-
....Now I just have to fight with Best Buy on trying to avoid the 15% restocking fee. I talked to 1 manager and after 15 minutes of conversation I only got him to agree to a full refund in store credit. I tried pleading with him about the fact that they didn't have a display model for me to look at and also tried to convince him that the screen is defective, but he wasn't buying it. I'm taking it in tomorrow and will try again to push my case. Anyone have any advice on avoiding the BB restocking fee? -
We could all do siucide runs and and try to get the best 3DMARK06 scores but that's not praticle. The already warm running GFX card will either sizzle out or you will get BSOD.
I get 12500 at a steady clip on my G60-VX OC'd but I found a sweet spot for my GPU that only raises temps 1c.
I do have a T9900 for a CPU that really helps but believe me if found that the JX is a more powerful system I would get it but for me and my set up as it is now it would be a lateral move.
The stock JX is a great value deal, but I cannot justify getting that over what I have now.
Good Luck with your benchmarks and I hope you prove me wrong. -
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
I hit 12100-ish with an overclocked X9100/260m combo once.
I refuse to tell you my temperatures. I really should try a run with my modded T9900 system though. If I can find that damned monitor again. -
No chance he hits 13K right Forge?
We need screen shots too. -
I just hit 11,953. Havent tried different drivers yet.
-
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
And I doubt it will hit 13000. While it's a more powerful CPU (maybe?) it's a weakened GPU. So yeah.Attached Files:

What PLL does everybody use for setFsb?
-
-
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
Core iX computers don't use FSB, anyway.
-
I tried it doesnt work. Sandra doesnt read it either...Sandra wont even show clock generator at all.
-
Then what are you guys using to overclock these i5's in windows?
-
Vohibe - I dont recall off the top of my head, had to search through the VX pages myself via google to find benches ... I have not had any BSOD problems with my JX nor did I have any problems with my VX.
My JX gpu does heat up quite a bit, but from what I've been told on these forums, thats normal. The left wrist pad heats up quite a bit more than the VX...which concerns me because I like to keep my lappy closed while gaming on an LCD tv... I dont see how I could do that and keep the wrist pad area cool...I thought about taking out the express card place holder and see if that helped cool off a bit while gaming... I may try that tonight -
*edit* just read the return policy online.. Notebooks restocking fee for sure:
Restocking fee
A restocking fee is applicable in some product categories, unless you are a Reward Zone Program Premier Silver member, the item is defective, or the fee is prohibited by law. The restocking fee charges are:
25% for Special Order Products, including appliances
15% for opened notebook computers, projectors, camcorders, digital cameras, radar detectors, GPS navigation and in-car video systems
10% for Apple® iPhones -

SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
Although I believe Asus has some built-in overclocking software. -
Update people!
Mind you this is at the laptops stock screen res since I don't have a external monitor to run at 1280x1024 default res.
Could probably squeeze out a few more points but don't want to push it over the edge.
Not as good as yours Forge.
But my temps were better
ICD7 thermal paste works great.lol don't need no stinkin laptop cooler
BB-G60VX scores -
I am shocked how you all say that this pc plays all those games! I bought my G60JX on march 12, 2010 specifically to play Fallout 3 and nothing. It freezes every time. Tried GTA 4, freezes, tried World at War, freezes. Yes, everything is updated, I tried in windowed mode, etc. I was told that pc's are not meant for gaming and just to give up and get a desktop.
Yet I come here and see all of ya claming you're playing all these top end games. I was also told windows 7 does NOT play any games because nothing is made for it yet because it just got out of beta.
Gaming woes aside, the speakers on this thing are HORRIBLE! who's with me on here. omg. I crank it up to 100 and it sounds like it's at 15 percent. Even with headphones on. If anyone is playing music or talking, I miss a lot of things when I watch movies or play my point and click hidden object games.
I really thought i was getting a great laptop; it's definitely NOT a gaming laptop; least the one i have, and that sucks figuring i spent 1100 on it total from Best buy 3 days ago
first gaming laptop; last gaming laptop. I am so turned off to the whole thing. My friend SAID consoles are better cuz with pc, you have to tweak and add and do this and do that just to get ONE game to play.
also said laps are just good for warcraft and sims.I kinda believe it now .HOW did you all get those games to play??? My graphics card is all the way down to super sub par low and STILL Freezes and so on. no, my card is not burning up- stays at 61 degrees farenheit. i got that downloadable thing that constantly monitors your system. it was normal the whole time. Games just freeze. I can't play like that. Help?

Can anyone that owns and games on a G60vx tell me if I can run dragon age on "high" settings? The vx has a pretty low end dual core and I Know DA requires quite a high proccessor speed(quad) to run at optimal.
Asus G60-JX @ BestBuy fir $999.99
