Return it you have 14 days.
Your friend definetly does NOT know anything cuz I can play all those games you mentioned with ease.
If your not happy with it get another one or have the GEEK SQUAD look at it cuz it seems like you don't know what your doing.
    My speakers are fine.
    Good luck :)

It's make up your own mind day on that one. It's pretty much a 50/50 split

I actually don't mind the older hardware in the VX (nor the price), but the rampant heat issues are making me lean to the JX. From reading the thread, the JX gets hot, but doesn't seem to have a lot of the gpu problems the VX had.

Yea unfortunately I am not a silver member. I just got back from returning it and after 30 minutes of arguing I could only get them to agree to a full refund of store credit. So now I have $1,050 to spend at BB at some point. I figure I'd rather that then hand them $150 of my money for nothing.

Well I can tell you right now, if you want a vx jump on it soon ... I did a search the other day and only 3 best buys in the dfw area out of about 15 stores have them .. I never had heat problems with my vx and the jx gets a little hot on the wrist pad.

thats a great score with only minor gpu overclocking!
I'm beginning to see that the gtx260m might be a better performer after all ... I cant even oc my gts360 because ntune crashes on me... I wouldnt mind seeing my benches with a little OC'n on the gpu... my 9869 score was using Performance mode in Power4gear I believe since my processor is always at 2.53 ghz

Well, I'm going to return mine because of the horrible keyboard bounce. Took it back to Best Buy to have them look at it and they pulled another one out of the box and it was just as bad. The problem is the back plate on the keyboard is not stiff enough and the clips just don't hold it in place very tight. Test yours. Put your finger nail between the 4 & 5 keys and above the R and press down. It will flex. It will flex all the way down the keyboard below the number keys. Even the G60VX they had as a showroom model did the same thing.

It does have some flex, doesn't bother me at all but then again I don't hammer the keyboard.
    Try using a lighter touch.

A desktop is still a PC, you know.

Anyway, by rights, you should be able to punt around just about any game. GTA4 might give it trouble, since that game pretty much needs a quad core to play properly. But World at War and Fallout 3 should have no problems at all. You might not be able to max everything out, but you should be able to get smooth gameplay with most settings high. Performance-wise the GTS 360m looks somewhere between the 9800m GTS and 9800m GT, both strong cards.

Every game I've thrown at it works fine with no compatibility issues.

The speakers do indeed suck. They're a joke.

It's odd that you headphones are also off.

Wait, wut? 61 Fahrenheit? As in 16 Celcius? OR did you mean 61 Celcius?

In any case, looks like you got a lemon. Switch it out. The G60jx should have no problems with most games.

Are you using nTune of nVidia System Tools? nTune is a known crasher.

And yes, the GTX 260m is better than the GTS 360m. More shaders, for one thing. But the 360m is by no means a slouch.

I wonder if the wireless card is near the GPU on the jx? I've only been playing on wireless so maybe thats why i'm getting so much heat on the left wrist pad? I took out the express slot place holder, it was so hot it was actually soft lol ... leaving it out does help keep the wrist pad a little bit cooler.

    Wireless works great btw! :)

Wireless will generate negligible heat. If the laptop is configured similar to the G51vx, that heat is all from the GPU. (Well, in the case of the G50/G51vx/G60vx that heat was also from the northbridge, but Core i7 laptops don't have a northbridge)

    Or unquoted. Thanks for catching.

Guys here is my G60JX solution to freezing/crashing. http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=467936

I have not had any problems after this. It is a very simple non destructive solution and I guarantee it will solve the problem. I know it sounds like a sham wow commercial.

Oh cool...glad to hear you can just use Microsoft's drivers. That's what I do on my N80 under 7, and everything works great. I really try to avoid excess drivers. I *might* have one special key driver from Asus installed, can't remember. Besides that, just Nvidia's drivers, which always work well for me.

Ok so I tried installing Ntune again ... fail... the app crashed the first time then it BSOD my jx the second time... When I restarted my lappy Nvidia control panel would not open or error out... So I tried to uninstall ntune and it wouldnt uninstall and kept getting an ntune error then an ntune server error... I ended up having to uninstall both nTune, Nvidia drivers then clean out my registry .. after all that, I downloaded the nvidia driver software from asus, reinstalled and its all good now... what a pain...

    Rivatuner ok to use?

Yea I'm using them as well. Been using them ever since one of my previous laptop's was locked by the manufacturer, so I could not install any drivers besides the ones (dell or asus) the manufacturer had published. Problem was that the latest version they had released was over 1 year old and I would get a "sorry you need to upgrade your graphics driver" when starting a game.

So the laptopvideo2go drivers are basically official drivers that Nvidia has released, but the configuration file has been edited so you can install the driver to any system. Even those that are locked by maker.

If you check their forum they also have a tweaked (optimized) driver, made by a guy who call's himself Dox. I'm using that one, but I'm on a older system so I don't know if I'd recommend that for your "new" laptop.

what is up with the bios not showing the cpu and memory now during post? i have the latest bios and all you get is some garbage saying this and that for bbs post to select drive or enter setup. Also why is their no second hard drive now so i can do raid? While the cooling issues seem better, that can be to the video card and cpu mostly. I do think that the double heat pipe helps to some degree but....

At stock, GPU heat during gaming seems to be sub-90 for almost all machines. With some choice mods I bet it can be brought to fairly happy temperatures which would allow some nice overclocking.

Temps for the GPU are better, but if you still have your G60VX I would say the JX is weaker graphically.

I did see the 112 vs 96 stream processor, but I can't help to wonder the diff between 256 bits/ddr3 vs 128 bits/ddr 5, I'm assuming this is not the traditional 256 vs 128 bit since its new 40nm fabrication process and DDR 5 vs DDR 3, but I can't seem to find any document addressing these difference based on facts and not speculations.

I would agree with the lower temperature due to the 40nm, but wonder how significantly these two really differs in performance... (also partially due to the fact that I5 has 4 threads vs P7450's 2 thread and DDR 3 vs DDR 2.

3dMark06 scores seem to favor the GTX 260m. A GTS 360m user got somewhere around 10700, while I managed something like 12000. I was overclocked on an X9100/GTX 260m, of course.

That explains it.....your faster cpu and OC'd GPU lol...

and damn.. i want it but really shouldn't buy it.....it would just be a luxury.. my desktop score 17500 on 3D mark vantage *much more demanding than 06* and thats without overclocking.. so technically my desktop is more than enough hm..........

Well, from what I gather the G51jx user--or was it a G60jx; I can't remember--was also overclocked on the GPU to about +15%.

While it's newer and probably cooler, the GTS 360m is noticeably weaker than a GTX 260m. Which is actually pretty good, because the GTX 260m is still a beastly card.

Whats the newest driver with working power-management?!

Returned my G60 on Sunday. The screen was a total fail. To low res for its size, looked grainy. Everything else was excellent though, very powerful in the gaming area. Scored 11,990 in 06 at Default res.

Hoping the Qosmio I ordered can score the same!

Sorry to hear.. how was your heat and noise? I'm afraid of hot hot laptops.. I'll accept a certain amount of heat given the small package...

I do agree 1366 x 768 isn't the best, however, I would still opt for this one over the 1920 x 1080 screen because of the limitation of power on mobile video card. Higher resolution = lower frame per second also = hotter running due to stress...........

For an extra $500 I got the G73JH. It has the 1080p screen and it runs every game (WoW, Dragon Age, an Starcraft 2 beta so far) without a hitch at high/max settings. The screen is 500x better (plus you get a top of the line gpu, blue-ray, an extra 2gb of ram, and core i7).

Yea saw that one, very sweet, but I have a powerful desktop so a 17.3 in would be overkill for me. Had I not have the desktop with ATI 5870, I would totally go for this one. However mobile i7 1.6 ghz one is slower in game than P7450 at 2.13 ghz. Not in other app, but mostly in game.. Tried i7 720 1.6 ghz on game.. load time is consistently slower than duo core laptop with same video card...but I imagine you can OC yours for asus under extreme turbo.

FOr those that want the 1080P screen this one is not bad. No tax and free ship..

Well, damn. Now Asus decides not to gimp the motherboards and allow quad support.

Sigh. The quad/GTX 260m combo that never was...

On that note, now I'm wondering how hard it would be to get a GTX 260m into that machine. I hear the GPUs are shaped a bit differently.

for guitardude05, Firewire is "Ricoh 1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller".

I have been using an xbox 360 for games the past couple of years but wanted a computer to play Crysis and upcoming StarCraft 2. The g60 is my first gaming computer in years. I picked up the g60vx from BB at the beginning of March and about a week later saw the updated g60jx so I exchanged at BB for that one (paid the extra $100 and no restocking fee at my local store).

I've had some freezing issues related to switching to battery power (total lock up 3-4 times) on the jx (no issues on the vx). i saw a post on another site that said you should unplug from the wall first because that is better than pulling the plug from the notebook. I'll start doing that to see if it helps. Not really sure if any of the available updates from ASUS would help.

The only other constant in the freezing is my use of one of my wired USB MS mice all 3 or 4 times its occurred.

Tonight after the freezing occurred again I thought of trading in for the G72 but don't really want the extra size (would like the higher resolution though).

I also had one instance of the Blue Screen on the first day.

Now that would be something,I've thought about a lot lately
Man I have to rid of these stupid dreams but besides the price of it might just be doable.
