^ so theres no side part of touch pad to scroll with even with one finger? you HAVE to use the on screen scroll bars? im on a $350 HP laptop that has one, thats really lame if it doesnt.
-
-
Wow. I'm kinda disappointed. Not that it's a dealbreaker or anything, but it would have been a really neat feature. I'm surprised that it doesn't because even the cheaper netbooks have it. And even the G51 at least has a dedicated scroll bar on the touchpad. But meh, whatever I guess.
-
LOL that just struck me as extremely funny
-
Are we talking about the itouch or something, I have done perfectly fine on laptops that never had such a feature...
Go buy a mouse
...
Oh, and I hope this bios update fixes the issue. If it does, Asus can have my money
! G71, here I come!
-
There's no scroll texture on the trackpad, but you can indeed scroll using the right side of the trackpad (if I remember correctly).
-
I thought the hole multitouch/two finger thing/gestures were a Mac-only thing?
I know all laptops have the basic things like scrolling, maximizing/minimizing and the such, but I thought most the other stuff was only on Apple computers. Could be wrong though, I never looked into it too much. -
there is a scroll feature of the pad, but it isnt displayed visually. honestly though, get a mouse
-
My G71 when turned off has a light left on- its the 2nd "touch" option thing that has a lightening bolt inside of a circle? Is this normal and also how would I turn that off?
-
Pretty sure it is a Synaptics touchpad so, yes it can support multitouch and gestures. You will need to download the Acer drivers that have been hacked to work on all laptops.
Those of you that have the G71 correct me if it does not have a synaptics touchpad. -
Normally I do use a mouse but if I'm not at home imo its not worth unplugging the mouse which is plugged into a hidden hub. Touch pads arent bad for internet if you turn up the sensitivity.
-
ITS FIXED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They sent me the Beta bios. IT WORKS. I just hit 85 and no slow down!
BETA BIOS

G71GX-ASUS-1201.ROM 2009/07/01 (BB:32 HW:02)
BIOS checksum: 9106 Bytes Free : 19F3C
EC checksum: 28C4 Version: 0504-002
1. Change VGA thermal sensor threshold to 105C. -
Awesome! Cant wait to see the full version come out!
-
woot yay
-
So, anyone help? When i shut off my G71 the screen mode (button w/ a lightening bolt) stays lit up blue.... this normal? I noticed when i touched it the laptop booted into the express gate.
-
Sweet they ARE paying attention. Please post the Beta 1201
-
Granite, which bloatware items did you clean? I need to get busy, too
-
Nothing is Real Notebook Evangelist
It's ironic how people are so overjoyed that their laptops are reaching higher temperatures, lol.
-
I uninstalled Microsoft office (since its just a 30 day trial- also i have the full version saved on my desktop anway if i wanted it), all the Google bloatware garbage, all the best buy garbage as well as their Geek Squad crap thats on it, and I also told a few programs not to run at startup such as the lightscribe probram (something i probably will never use lol).
You just have to carefully pick & choose from the uninstall list in the control panel. -
Congrats, im glad they acted so quickly. -
Does the gpu get hot like the G51 with the new bios
-
I just picked my g71gx and bought crysis at the same time so I had something to test it. It ran great on High w/ mas res and 2x aa, but then, bam, 2 fps. That irritated me extremely which led me to this treat.
The update that is in testing now applies to the GX models, correct? This is my first Asus product and am impressed so far, I would just like to see this problem fixed asap.
thanks -
The BestBuy ASUS G71GX-RX05 (Dual core model) and the G71GX-RBBD09 (quad core model) will both benefit from the new BIOS that will be issued by ASUS. So yes, the update being tested will fix your problem.
-
That's great!
How high did the temps get? GPU? CPU ?
Are the fans loud? or any louder than before? -
Haha i think everyone is looking for that new bios! nice inspite!
P.S. i hope its ACTUALLY fixed, cuz my laptop went to 85C before going down
anyone else confirm? -

Interesting... I wonder what all of the hysterical mobs are saying now, not five days later? -
The complaints and uproar from those "hysterical mobs" (and even CNET's brushoff of the laptop) obviously pressured them to look for the fix.
I don't see why you have to be so negative in all your posts >.>
Constructive posts ftw?
Next time I buy something that doesn't work as intended, I'm gonna go even more hysterical. Maybe they'll fix it faster
-
I havent had any of these Asus G series laptops, Do you guys think putting a T series proc in here, with the added 10watt will make this thing overheat since it only has one fan and one heat sink?
-
according to there facebook page they are releasing the bios today
-
Excellent, I wont have time to update the bios til after the weekend but Ill end up downloading it from my mac and saving it to a jumpdrive ready to go once I get back home. Hope it works!
BTW the speakers on this laptop are wonderful, i cant believe how crisp and clear stuff sounds on it! -
Also anyone know the brand of hard drive in the G71? Seems a bit loud for a laptop hard drive when its under full load.
-
Just glad they are fixing this problem
Are you always such a drama queen?
All we want is a fix to a problem that should never been there in the first place!
Not sure about you but after spending $1200 on a "gaming" laptop it would be nice to be able to use it for it's intended purpose.
"hysterical mobs" you really have a unique way at looking at things
-
If anyone is trying to play WoW, I was able to play for about 3-4 hours without any problem yesterday on the lowest of settings. I was in Dalaran, doing dailies, and even ran Heroic Nexus and I stopped because I was leaving, not because it was slowing down. I know that's not what people want to be playing on however I was getting 100+ fps the whole time so it didn't look too bad and is a temporary solution until this new BIOS is released (which is hopefully today).

The Drama Queen, and, yes, there were several, is you and one only has to go back to last weekend's posts for confirmation.

Steelers gets the most rude poster award on this thread.
-
How would ASUS ever have found out about the problem as quickly as they did if it wasn't for angry customers moaning and groaning about it?
Anyways, it looks as if ASUS pulled through pretty quickly on this! Sorry, I didn't really have time to get into contact with BBY corporate to see if there was anything they could do about putting all of their stock on backorder until they received revised/updated laptops. -
ummmm how are the forum members getting the:
BETA G71GX-ASUS-1201.ROM 2009/07/01 (BB:32 HW:02)
BIOS checksum: 9106 Bytes Free : 19F3C
EC checksum: 28C4 Version: 0504-002
Cant find it anywhere. It is mentioned on the Asus VIP forum but not how to get it. -

You realize, Asus does not monitor this forum, right? -
^ actually they most likely do. most companies monitor the internet - especially forums. people almost never answer surveys, but on here they have free information on what people want and changes to make on new models.
-
They do monitor the Best Buy Website, Best Buy's Forum, and their Asus Forum (or look at any website sent to them via a email or post). They also received emails from high reviewers (CNET's Dan Ackerman sent me an email saying this) that they will not be putting a full review or any reviews whatsoever until the problems with the new Asus laptops are fixed.
I'm pretty sure with all these complaints, especially from official reviewers, that they decided to jump on the problem right away... -
SteelersWorship Notebook Consultant
Uh, no... They do not monitor this forum, although someone may have sent them a link to here during the week, and they do not have a regular presence on these boards (unlike several other manufactures are known to do on various message boards).
Do you really think there is an Asus rep familiar with this thread, however many pages of it there are, prior to last week? No... -
Yes this is normal. It's if you want to just check email or skype and a few other things without having to start Windows fully. Personally I would have preferred that they used those buttons for volume control instead of having to hit fn F11 and fn F12 for volume. If I had one thing to really complain about this laptop, that would be it.
-
/agree with that ^^^
-
That's the Express Gate button. If you press it while the system is off (instead of the Power button), it boots into a version of Linux that came bundled with the notebook (ASUS claims boot times of less than 10 seconds) which allows you access to music, web, etc. without having to fully boot into Windows (note: this does not work if you have a RAID0 configuration). I don't think there is a way to disable it, but if there is, will somebody please let us know.
-
Mine is a Seagate.
-
I played WoW for about an hour yesterday, with everything on high. No problems.
-
When I tried playing on ultra settings, 8x multisampling, 1440x900 res it ran for about 15 minutes before crashing haha but it looked awesome and I was getting decent fps before it happened.
-
Running maxed out with a crappy Belkin notebook cooler I had from my old HP I've been ableto run for 2 hrs without issues. Max temp 79c. Framerate has been a solid 30 in dalaran with all settings maxed and ne'er below 60 in the rest of northrend. Haven't tried raiding with it yet though. Was afraid of the gpu threshold rearing it's ugly head during a bossfight and leaving my folks down a tank.
Everything else I've thrown at it has looked beautiful and ran extrely well so far. Farcry 2 especially.
Looking forward to the bios fix. -
Sorry for typeos. Posting from my iPhone bored at work. LoL
-
Ahh, I cannot wait for the BIOS update!! Im installing WoW on it now so once it comes out, ill be g2g. It still amuses me that this the G71GX is more powerful than my Vigor Gaming Force Recon AXE. I am patiently waiting for this thread to start showing some exciting new post about temps and framerates, as well as a true review for the entire computer.
-
Thank you for your speculation, but realize that you are just speculating.
