Crap, I'm in a bad predicament now...
My wifes job has called her and wants her to work next Monday (not tomorrow) and she said I have to get a laptop this weekend. I know some of you are thinking, "Man I wish I had a wife that told me that..." but if you were following my posts for the past few weeks, I'm currently torn on the G51vx and G71gx STILL. Now I have to decide by this weekend, crap!

    G51vx:
    Pros-
    Portable 15"
    GTX 260m
    Backlit keyboard
    Price is $999

    Cons-
CPU (Would have to break the warranty immediately to upgrade the cpu)

    G71GX:
    Pros-
    Large Desktop Replacement 17"
    GTX 260m
    6GB Ram
    Good CPU

    Cons-
Price is $1299 (I still hate you for it Best Buy)

Less than a week to decide on the two, I really hope I don't make a bad decision :( ...

if you are willing to spend $1300, why not go with the g51-x1a from newegg. im sure you can get the bing cashback as well.

    1. I'm kinda done with online purchasing (been doing it for 10+ years), had too many bad experiences with customer support, repair, and restock fees (thanks newegg) from various companies (Gateway, Cyberpower, MSI, etc.).

    2. The two laptops I mentioned above will be my FIRST in-store purchases.
If I have any problems I can simply do an exchange at the store and be up and running same day, which is faster than shipping it off in the mail IMO.

    3. If I were to take into consideration the g51vx-x1a, I'm ok with spending $1300, but even with near same specs, I'm still torn. I like the portability of the G51vx but I also like the big size of the G71GX :(!

Where is the g61vx (or is it gx) when you need it, it would have been a great middle ground (portable and big, lol).

you'll still get the downclock issue after puting the computer to sleep just as a warning, only way to fix it then is a fresh restart.

the downclock issue is total pants. I bought a g71 and love it (I'm using it in a hotel right now and I don't miss my desktop at all) except for the random downclocks. My machine doesn't even get hot to the touch but it still happens. Tried 1501, 1701, and now 1201 and it still happens even after a cold boot.

do the update off of your flash drive through the bios instead of using windows, or live update. if you did it through the bios idk what to tell you then.

Oh boy, I sold my G50Vt at the worse time. Not only did Best Buy not bring the price of the G71GX-RX05 back to it's original, but by the looks of it Best Buy is no-longer going to be carrying it after the last ones are sold, cause it's now "Not Available for Shipping".

thats best buy for you.... what they give they take away... the best place to purchase a laptop is directly over the internet from the manufacture. Even if you purchase from best buy they require that you send it to some place for service which can take 4 to 6 weeks for service as best buy may only replace a unit with the orginal 14 days of purchase sometimes 30 days, otherwise they need permission from the manufacture to replace it.

Also, any idea why direct console 2 won't let me do anything with the oled? I can't select the option, only the annoying blinking lights on back/side.

AUUGGGHHH! I'm pulling out my hair! Wife has upped the date again because she has been told to report for her work this Friday to pop in some paperwork. So she has said I have to make a decision on a laptop before noon tomorrow  ! I still haven't decided on which laptop to get from BB: G51vx or G71gx!
Both are good laptops but I wanted to do some more research but now I can't. There were many times I was in BB and had the G51vx in my hands almost heading to the checkout but this time I can't change my mind like before. It's either walk out with a laptop or nothing at all [for a very long time]. I like the big size of the G71gx (won't have to break the warranty) but I also like the portability of the G51vx (MUST break the warranty)...
    I really hope I don't make a hasty/bad decision that I'll regret  ...

I already bought the g51 (forced out of no g71 in stock in the area), bought a t9600, although im gona miss the screen and probably the normal keyboard, the machine is almost the same for $300 less you can end up with better proc down the road if you need it. When i bough my g71 it was for $1150 and the g51 was $1050, now its $1300 vs 1000, imo g51 atm is the choice to buy. Aswell if the g71 goes back ever to $1150 then it will be the choice to buy over the g51, but for now i the g51 is the best choice.

After much deliberation, I decided on getting the g71gx - for various reasons but also because it's a highly sought item. I went to Best Buy this morning and of course it was out of stock (0 on hand) but they did have plenty of g51vx (8 on hand). Wife gave the ok and had Best Buy hold one for me once it comes in tomorrow. I'll of course try to do an unboxing video, the one that's currently on youtube kinda sucks. Thanks everyone for your help ;) !

i'd be pissed cause i waited about 3 months on the g71 gx and settled on a gtx 260 machine because I like asus and had a good experience with my last asus.

i guess its nobodies fault, just technology in general..
hell, i payed 1800 for my g1 back in 2007, now its probably worth about 600 dollars against similarly specd machines. (still has the great screen res tho)

Best Buy makes me wonder sometimes...
Well I was suppose to have g71gx on hold for me this morning but come to find out the laptop wasn't even on the truck yesterday (even though the Best Buy reps said it was). They are now telling me it should be here by Monday or I could order one and it would be put on hold for me (again  )...
Sadly there is PLENTY of g51vx at every Best Buy I've been to but the only problem is, with it being so hard to get the G71gx - it makes me want it more (can't explain the feeling)! So I rather just wait, call, search for it rather than having to settling for the g51vx - which has plenty in stock at every Best Buy...
I want the G71GX Best Buy, let me have it unless you just don't want me money (if not why the up in price)!

The G51gx From Best Buy Is Worse Then The G71gx-rx05 From Best Buy Because Of The Cpu Is Only 2.0ghz And Has A Sticker Over The Screw Of The Cpu So You Cant Just Change It Out With Out Voiding The Warranty. Otherwise I Would Put A Mobile Extreme In Mine G71gx-rx05... Can Never Have Enought Cpu Ram Hdd, Storage And All...

Well my stolen G71 replacement just showed up :D . An intial glimps between aside from the size, i like more the screen colors, might be just my own impression but seem more live the screen, i gotta still get used to the keyboard but it seems fine, i do miss the size of the g71 though.

Well im updating atm, will do some stock benchmarks before i switch the hdd n the cpu. But the cpu does idle kinda high atm, around 50C while the G71 iddled around 40C, but the GPU idles lower than on the G71, around 52C while on my G71 was around 60C. Either way lot of work coming but im officilly out of the G71 club :( .

    Funny Story...
I go down to my local Best Buy today to "order" the G71GX directly to the store so I can pick it up. I meet up with a new employee to talk about doing the order and he does something none of the other Best Buy employees did. He hands me a phone and picks up another and shows me his computer screen. He looked more concerned than the other employees I've talked to and tells me he has the G71GX and says [and I qoute], "Dude, that laptop owns - I know how hard it is to find it, lets call some people up!" So he shows me the few stores that supposedly had one on hand and decides to go down the list and call people up and tells me I can call a few of them as well. We both eventually find ONE store that actually had one (and ONLY ONE), another Best Buy 30 minutes away. He instantly tells the associate on the phone to put one on hold because I was going to purchase it now and just go pick it up there.

So with everything done at my local Best Buy, I head down to the one that had my G71GX. Once I'm there, I hand them my Pick Up paperwork and that's when the worry starts. It wasn't on hold... nor was it set in the back. The Best Buy customer service personnel go running around the store trying to find it, thus freaking me a bit out. one even slipped a couple words to another I caught, "I think it was sold a few minutes ago, I remember seeing someone walking out with one of those G computers." I had been waiting about 10 minutes and no laptop still... someone contacts a manager on the floor finally. Come to find out, the very same manager called was talking to the associate who had MY laptop in his hands and just hadn't stopped by the back yet. So with a sigh of relief I now FINALLY have the G71GX - hopefully no gpu problems, etc ;). It'll be hard to get a replacement if anything is wrong...

Oh, and I already finished an unboxing video of the G71GX - it's just not uploaded to youtube yet  ! I also have pics and plan on trying to do a review sometime soon...

Thanks, currently trying to get the laptop up to speed right now.

-Removing Bloatware (Thanks David and Les)
-Installing Essentials (Security Software, Winamp, etc.)
-Dumping external to internal (programs/files from old desktop)
-Figuring out the in and outs of the laptop (for review)

Will try to upload unboxing video tomorrow...

I apologize for those who were waiting for my unboxing video, I've decided to postpone the upload due to my excitement over FRAPS (first time using it and love it)! I've now started writing my review and I'll be adding a few FRAPS videos to it along with my unboxing video (3DMARK06 scores, settings as you can see with my sig, and various other things will be in the review also) , expect it this weekend hopefully ;)!

Just be warned, FRAPS in recording mode kills your FPS. I don't know the exact percentage that gets pwned, but there you go.

Got done with COD4 vid Full Game version (Demo is on youtube but I have the real thing), plan on doing RE5 demo next. I'm still trying to figure out how to go over 4 minutes in regards to fraps - it usually cuts the video in portions way before 4 minutes  ! I do agree that FRAPS kills alot of frames and I do plan on writing down with and without fraps captions. 1/4 done with review by the way, kinda borrowing the way Sunny did his review :p

Oh, I was going say if you didn't buy the full version, I was going to buy a license for you. But since you bootlegged yours, you don't need my hospitality anymore, haha.

FRAPS puts a lot of overhead on one core and thrashes the hard drive during recording, so if you are running a dual threaded game, expect a few slowdowns.
