As some may have noticed, my sig has been updated with a few things :D!
Overclock safely to about 2.9ghz but kinda don't see an up in 3dmark 06 scores. Come to find out that overclocking the GPU does that, though sadly I have only been able to overclock it to stable REAL Stock clocks of the GTX 260m (we all know the g71gx and g51vx are underclocked.) SeanDude05, I have no clue how you get that high of clocks, I tried to go to the clock speeds of the GTX 280m but sadly it crashes 3dmark 06 and black screens some of my games :(...

Aw well, anyway - as some have noticed in my sig, I also ditched (disabled) onboard sound :D. I am now comfortably using the X-FI Surround 5.1 paired with the Barracuda HP-1 5.1 Gaming Headphones and does it make a world of a difference. Some may have read my earlier posts, I'm a fan of EAX and this was the only way to get it and it sounds great, way better than onboard! My advice is be sure to NOT install the Stable drivers because they create crackling (bad!), grab the newer Beta drivers (fixes the crackling issue.) Anyway, I'm off to bed, I'll be up a bit early to do a bit more of the review, later!

Actually da1writer, I need to revise those clocks. I initially had a very good run with them, about 12,050 3dmarks in 06, however, these clocks just are not 24/7 stable, as I soon found out. I am actually running at 575/1440/900... I believe the DDR3 ram in mine just does not like anything above 950ish MHz. TBH, I havent seen much decrease as the ram is still feeding frames fast enough to begin with.

In Arkansas, they haven't had any in the BB stores for several weeks. I called today to ask when they would be receiving more, and the salesperson said it was marked as discontinued and they were selling the display unit. They also no longer sell it online.

i hope that the g71gx from best buy doesnt turn into another w90 where they discontinue it, and stop supporting it, then try to sweep it under the rug....

i noticed on the republic of gamers site they have the new g51, but only the older g71s listed, excluding the gx....

Small update for those who are wondering...
Review is done actually, 4 pages long too :D!
Reason it's not up yet is because I'm still doing benchmarks.
Finished 3Dmark06 (twice), Resident Evil 5 (twice).
Currenetly doing Street Fighter 4 (will do twice) and will be doing Crysis (will do four times).
So I'll try to toss the review here tomorrow and update frequently with G71GX-RX05 game vids I post on youtube.

Anyone else have power adapter problems? Mine is already starting to take a crap on me (Probably have owned for no more than 5 months).

Can help me out with a link to a power adapter that is compatible with the g71 (best buy version), or is that covered under warranty?

The connector on the end won't get a stable connection to the laptop, so I gotta keep the laptop in a very awkward position in order for it stay on AC mode. So I can't move it essentially

Tell me about it, it took me weeks before I found ONE 30 minutes outside my city I lived in. If you don't want to search hard like me maybe it's best to wait for what Best Buy *may* be putting out for a replacement model. You can grab a g51vx-RX05 though at your local Best Buy with no problems, every Best Buy I went to had tons of those in stock. Just upgrade the CPU and your golden ;)!

What kind of power adapter do I need for the G71 gx rx05 best buy laptop? It comes with a 150watt 19.5V adapter, but I see a lot of replacement adapters with 120watt outputs, does it matter which one I can get?

What was the old downclocking issue? My G71 shipped with .1701 the newest BIOS available and during WoW (of all games!!!) I will just drop occasionally from 60.00FPS rock solid down to 10-15FPS... I can't get it to come back except a restart... I can't downgrade the BIOS to 1201, either. It says the date is older than the current release. What's happening? The laptop doesn't even feel very hot which is the most frustrating part.

Did you play WoW after waking the computer up from Sleep? If so, there's the problem, Asus only partial fixed the downclocking issue. Computer runs fine from initial startup but if you put the computer in sleep mode and wake it up to play, the downclocking issue rears it's ugly head. NEVER put your computer on sleep if you plan to game later, best just shutdown the computer and game when you turn it back on.

Judging by the frames you lose though, I don't believe it's a downclocking issue. Reason: Downclocking dumps the frames to 2-5fps. Your problem could be simply server problems, need to patchup the game, need to grab better graphics drivers, or you used too many programs before gaming (some programs grab too many resources and a restart may be needed).

    To diagnose further;
I do not use sleep, ever. I always shut it off or I'm using it.
The server is fine (my roommate plays on the same server, no issues) and the patches require the latest to connect so it's not that. I downloaded the latest nVidia drivers the other night thinking the same.
I don't know about the programs, but I have the quad core + we all have 6GB of RAM, I don't know of any program that could just make it drop after playing fine for over an hour...? The quad may also be the reason I hover around 10-15, though I have absolutely no way of verifying that. (And I'm pretty sure WoW doesn't use multi-cores, so...???)
    Any other ideas?

wow uses 2 cores after a patch that came a long time ago. I run wow fine on my g71 with the dual core. Also when you upgraded your bios, did you do it via live update? if so, you might want to try flashing the bios using a flash drive through our computers bios setup.
also, do you have shadows on max? shadows in wow bring things to their knees easily, especially in dal or something like that.

Just when I was typing the almost same thing (in regards to the bios), you beat me to it MasterShake89 :p ! Aw well, I also second this, flash the 1201 bios through your bios setup, simplest way to flash bios. Asus live update sucks in my opinion and has been removed day one of my G71gx...

P.S. This happens in my FEAR game as well, go from high fps to about 10fps all of a sudden. After looking around, I found this:

6th post down in the link above solved my issue (disable ALL HID devices [not spelled out] from device manager), maybe it will for you. Some games don't like certain mice I guess...

Hi guys new to this forum, but I am having an issue with my G71-A1. I had this laptop brought into me at my office because a user was having a problem with it. The laptop will not power up, but the power button on the keyboard display is light up. You can hit the power button and the lights will flash for a fraction of a second and go dead. I've take the hard drives out, tested the memory, and i am leaning in the direction that the power supply, or motherboard are bad (or both). I can upload some pic this evening so you can get a better idea of what I am seeing.

Basically I am sure that the laptop is getting power because I can plug the brick and the charging indicator lights up, and it also does the same when it is on battery power and not a/c.

Any help is greatly appreciated. The laptop is probably about a year old. Oh and the user is a serious WoW player.

    A) Ran out of supply - the supplies dried up. Take note that the g71gx sold rather well/fast because of it's original price of $1149. For what you got it was a fantastic price and probably killed the stock.

    B) Supply can't meet demand - Best buy may very well be having a supply issue with asus not being able to pump out enough for the many people wanting it. Best Buy may just be dropping it for this fact.

    C) New models/ other brands are going to be given a chance- Maybe the g71gx was a summer/back to school laptop they carried for the time being or deal wise. There is the rumored g51j model showing up soon (maybe replacing g51vx) and a few people are saying Gateway may be returning to Best Buy with the 79xx series gaming laptop.

One of those three are most likely the reason...

You can find a few places with them if you do a google search then click "shopping" at the top of the page. The cheaper ones are around $1900. That's for the G71GX-A1. I think you can find the RX05 variant cheaper.

Just visited Best Buy last night. They have a new model: G72gx-rx05. Specs look identical to the G71, but it comes with Windows 7 preloaded. Everything there lacked a price tag, and the salesperson said they weren't allowed to sell anything until the Windows 7 street date of Oct. 22.

Not sure if its the same, but they also releasing a new version, G72Gx-RBBX09 $1299 seems pretty good, dual 320gb hd, Q9000/GTX260m, 6gb of ram and 1600x900 screen.

I gave that a shot without any luck. I took the laptop down to a PC repair shop that I trust and it seems that the motherboard has gone out. Going to see what it will cost to repair it, or if they will even be able to find the part to repair it. Anyone know the part number off the motherboard?

I bought this laptop a few weeks ago and I really like how it performs, running Crysis in HIGH and Aion with everything maxed.

I went to Bestbuy, were I purchased it, and they have an identical model brand new with Windows 7.

I am thinking about returning this model and getting the new fancy model, but I am a little apprehensive about it. I think the model they have is the G72 - with the identical specs - Duo 2.53, 6gigs Ram, 260GTX 1gig....

Anyone have experience with this laptop?

Anyone try their free windows 7 update yet? I am curious how well it works on our G71's with drivers and all before I update mine.

By the way, my G71 has been doing very well- its become my weekend gaming pc to take to friend's places and its holding up perfectly :)

All Vista drivers should work with Windows 7. It's mostly the same OS it would appear. Some optimizations and tweaks. IMHO Microsoft just wanted a way to get away from the stigma Vista acquired in the early days.

Anyway, I love my new G71 so far and plan to upgrade to Windows 7 but I'm in no hurry. Very impressed with gaming. Runs Crysis better than my Q6600 desktop with a 8800 Ultra. DirectX10 is a tad slow for me at 1920x1200 on high, so I run DX9 still. Prototype and Bioshock run great.

    Quick Question.....

My son bought a G71GXA1 less than 2 months ago and just called me stating that his monitor backlight was not working. He can see the shapes but there is no backlight display on the monitor.

Is this a common problem? Thoughts??

Sorry if I sound like an idiot, but are you talking about the LED lights on the backside of the monitor? If so, he might of deleted Direct Console 2.0, which will shut off the LED lights completely. If so all he has to do is pop in the Asus CD the laptop came with. It's on there and he can install it.

negative...its actually the leds that light up the screen. They are all dead so if u look at the screen close you can see the picture but the leds behind arent lighting up the screen.

This happens to my computer as well but I think it's lowered to those values during idling (bumps up to 2.8-2.9GHZ, often fluctuating). While gaming or doing benchmarks, it bumps steady at 2.8-2.9GHZ (no fluctuation or lowering), so I think it's normal...

I'm having a strange issue - when I overclock the CPU using Turbo Gear, my GPU OC (which is only 550/850/1375) in Nvidia Performance Tool reverts my GPU speeds to stock. Pretty much I can't use both the GPU and CPU overclocked at the same time.
My temps are fine - under load my GPU gets up to 82C in games like Crysis. In GTA IV about 80C. CPU (undevolted) in stock under load is 51-52, but when OC to 2.9 Ghz gets to 69-70C.
Does anyone else have the same problem?
