max gpu temps only 65C that never suffer loss fps in games. Did you put the new thermal compound or modded heatsinks ?

I did add new thermal compound but to OC this high I'm taking extra "precautions".

You're really working it there Drake.

The 10.3 preview drivers installed well for me and using the default benchmark run in Dirt 2, and I can report a 10% increase in FPS.

Here's the Dirt 2 video of a London race with views being switched. It is still processing at this time though.

Let's not make fun of my driving, the cam had the best view, I was playing from an angle ;) .

Thought so :D Those benchmarks are just too out-of-this-world

Do you know what is a highest GPU OC that is as stable as stock? I am getting my unit in the next few days and would like to OC without compromising day-to-day work. :)

Be safe. I am rock steady at 800/1100. I've also been stable at other numbers, but this is the best mix of stability and fps increase.

    thanks, I will try 800/1000.

btw, I just got an email from Ken at Gentechpc. Apparently, just while he was about to ship my unit, they discovered grey lines on the screen and had to change the unit.

It seems there is a disproportionately high number of screen/RAM issues with these G73JH. I hope mine will arrive safely and without problems. Fingers crossed.

I gotta respectfully disagree drake. Furmark is a gpu fryer. Most games can't touch the temps furmark gets to. My gpu maxes at 75c while overclocked in BC2.

The resellers are worth their weight in gold. If you ordered from newegg, you would have a hosed system arriving at your door.

Hm, ati made a unbeleveable mistake with 5870. Older 4870 faster than "NEW" hype 5870. I am glad that i didnt buy this laptop with crapy mobility 5870gpu.

GTA hits a GPU hard (Floods memory usage for sure) so thats accurate,
Crisis is also quite a warmer,

I'd reccomend OCCT GPU test on shader complexity 0 for a fairly reliable GPU heat temp tester that doesn't completely smoke a GPU haha, (well it ran cooler the furmark did on my machine, not sure about others.)

That GPU score is not faster than 5870m. His P score is assisted heavily by his CPU score. I'm glad you didn't buy the laptop either.

Thats why we have remote repair and ECM ships, to kill the bait :). Actually, OCCT is a little on the hot side of things too, try tone the res down to half, or just run windowed 640x480 to 1024x768

    Something like that.

Mandrake think if I get a 920XM I can hit 3ghz-3.2ghz 100% stable for 100% load on all for cores for encoding with stock cooling? Temps should not go up too high I would not think unless you are increasing the voltage.

As for Dirt 2 the 10.2 said 8% increase. I just installed them today on my desktop, has a bunch of eyefinity fixes too. I look forward to seeing the 8% as the 5760x1200 resolution I use on my desktop is too hard for a single desktop 5870 to max out the game. I can go all very high but no ultra.

The G73 however did pretty good on the benchmark all ultra @ 1920x1080 ~28fps however some stages in the game are more demanding than the one the built in benchmark uses, and it would also be harder online I would imagine so going all High/Vhigh is probably a better idea.

My bench was on stock drivers though, so again add the 8% boost in.

3.2Ghz isn't mush of an issue for the system. I don't start seeing issues until after 3.4Ghz. I don't do any encoding so I don't know what kind of demand it puts on the proc. I gamed at 3.5Ghz for an hour with Borderland but I doubt that stressed the cpu to keep all four cores at 3.5Ghz. If you know of a test that I can use to simulate proc stress from encoding, I can try it.

I have to agree. As long as I don't use twin turbo, I can play at 800/1100 and never reach 80C while playing games. I've been playing these games, NFS Shift (I suck at car simulators so this is fun), Crysis, Killing Floor, and Mass Effect 2 (GOTY!!!)

Depends on how long it keeps the cores spiked. If there is a constant jump up and down in CPU utilization that it will have no issue.

^ I was answering your "I don't know what kind of demand it puts on the proc" for encoding.

My cores ran solid 1.73GHz just like in the Cinebench video and the cpu usage was always between 75-95% for that entire video encoding project. It's difficult to simulate encoding as it isn't a 100% stress on cpu (e.g. prime, occt), but a lot higher than any game. Games like Supreme Commander, FSX and GTA 4 are probably some that come the closet to encoding, but still not there.

you only need to run linx 6.4

time to see how the on board memory controller works in conjunction with the triple channel ddr3.....that's if it's triple channel...haven't seen anywhere where it was or wasn't yet.

lets see who has the better gflops... :) while heating the system up.
i would say start in a high temp room to see just how hot it gets first as you over clock...or not. :)
    and example...

you guys are telling me the 920xm will overclock to 3.4-3.5ghz??? so you guys are going from 2.0ghz to 3.4-3.5??? what is the turbo speed on one core load after OC so high? like 5.6ghz???

As I see, I shouldn't use that turbo button because it doesn't' help.
But I see you guys talking about ''Turbo Mode'',or ''Twin Turbo'', what do you mean??

Yup, I was surprised with the increased numbers...

Now to figure out Vbios and give BC2 a good long test run.

Once that's done I might go up a bit more on the clocks.

Too bad there is nothing we can do with the 720....

I'm hoping someone will figure it out.

Make sure you get the new BC2 update they released last night! That, along with the 10.3's gave me a 10 fps boost over a 2 minute fraps demo!

Went from 42fps avg to 52 fps avg with everything maxed and AA/AX off.

For what it is worth, I have found that Crysis can easily get my system as hot as FurMark did (on my desktop)

Also, my scores I had put in there were to show how strong the 5870m is, not that the 4870 is better haha. The clock difference is HUGE and you see it in performance. 128-bit GDDR5 will also make it cheaper while performing the same as the 256bit GDDR3 which is a plus

On and High. Please don't be misdirected by the low minimums, I started the temp reading as soon as the G73 came on. 50C, 56C, 50C is the typical value at the ambient I am now.

I'm interested in the game, please let us know how you like it. If it's good, I'll pick it up.

Totally off topic. But nice background. 458 Italia, sweet car.

So, I know evensen was saying he got a good boost on BC2 with it's update and the new drivers...what kinda gains are everyone else seeing? Like, do you have a score that that score was directly comparable to with the old drivers?

Cheat (by the way, Homestar runner rules!),

Keep in mind that the BC2 patch that came out specifically mentioned frame rate improvements, so the driver may have less to do with my 10fps increase. Others here have noted vantage and 3dmark scores increasing. I think Quag also got a boost in Dirt 2.

No. There is only one other option to choose in there, and that would be an undervolt. Might be neat to test it and see if it improves temps and battery life if your just browsing the web, but other than that I wouldn't touch it.

Thanks, it's a W7 download background Ferrari slideshow.

Old Vantage: P8921 New drivers, same clocks: P9100 (My GPU seems to be a little worse and CPU a little better than other G73 systems imo)
10% increase in Dirt 2 benchmark demo with stock clocks. 10% +/- in most of the runs I recorded as it is difficult to compare since even if it's the same track, it can be different runs. The benchmark run can change a little, but for the most part, prob the best way to compare.

That sounds pretty good. And I'm sure it'll continue to go up as we get newer drivers! Maybe not a whole lot...but every bit helps!

And evensen, I'm surprised anyone knows about homestar anymore lol it was gold...well, still is. I haven't even checked it in forever.
