I see
Intersting that 1.15 is your default as well, 1.10 is default on the 4870s with the option to up it to 1.15 (guess you already knew that though having had an M17x R2)

if your going to test this voltage thing you will need a clean copy of the original bios.
open in rbe
gpu registers
0x15(1.15) and change it to 0x15(1.175)
click okay
save the bios as a new name and not over your original. it needs to be an un edited copy of the bios.
the dos flash it.
if it works...you will see 1.175 as your highest option.
try at your own risk.., but that's how you do it.
and you need to flash with atiflash
example:
shows gpu info
atiflash -ai
flashes card ( f= force, but you shouldn;'t need it and p = device and 0 is the gpu)
atiflash -f -r 0 5870.rom
or
atiflash -r 0 5870.rom
you only need to do the atiflash -ai to see if you can even flash or look at what is there...if you cant do anything...chances are you can't flash either. -
new high personal best for me
Dam you coolermaster, i'll get you one of these days!!!
I can't quite get to 877 on my clockAttached Files:

Hey mandrake you could probably improve your vantage score if you updated to the 10.3 beta, it definitely improved my frame rates and gpu performance
-
Good job! 10.3 locks me up, still need to tinker more.
-
seems it's that way with 10.2 as well and both 10.2 and 10.3 get unstable over 870 on vantage tests for me -
new personal best and second only to that one crazy guy who swapped a 920 in

how high can you go on just the core alone...without moving the memory?
-
yeah i need to get benching with the 10.3 drivers.
-
lovin the new AC unit.

I need to get me one of those...no more cold weather

mine was better

my temps were after i left it in a freezer for 1 hour to cool all the capacitors and ferrite cores on the mobo

since its a unfair race
your mem is higher then mine and quads but our core is better -

dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
thanks for the temps in dmc4.

Ok I am on 10.3 drivers as well. 32 minutes of l4d2 on all high setings and with Over Drive (worth noting?) my core temp hit 95C max!!
So today I did another test without OD and it hit 94C max (after 32 minutes again).
What is the deal here guys? This is a litle hot for my liking are others reporting similar? Any suggestions to try I will give a go (other then the whole AC unit thing! Should I try to revert back to 10.2 drivers and see if there is a difference? -

Have you re-applied the thermal paste?
Usually helps alot over the stock crap -
I deffinitly haven't done that. I hear its not an easy thing to do so I figured it was out of my league (also voids warranty if im not mistaken).
-
All my thermal paste has been replaced and soon my thermal pads. Still waiting for them from China. I have the hottest running proc but I'm not having any heat issues.
-
I just want to know if this is normal. These temps of 95C in game is a little redicoulous. Its just funny that my hand rest on a giant sticker that promotes the cooling of the laptop (when I see the complete opposite).

Quagmire LXIX Have Laptop, Will Travel!
Pass, are you just using the one program to report temps? Try multiple and compare.
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Hmm...there were some places I can probably put paste or a pad on the 4870m's
On the voltage stuff (the big greyish pieces are just touching the heatsink, no interface) -

For what it is worth, HWMonitor reports the same temps as RealTemp for me

Good to hear trulsrohk, will convert back later today.
Last night I tried a session with a CD case propping up the back like I use to do with my Gateway 7811fx and let behold my max in L4D2 only hit 90C after 40 minutes compared to 94C (after 30). I know 90C is still hot but 94-95C is much hotter. -

Propping up the back always helps
That is one benefit of the batteries that have that bulge that prop the notebook up on their own -
My average GPU temps I believe were in the mid 70's and only occasionally hitting the mid 80's. I'm considering a move back to 10.2 as well but I'm not sure a few sessions hitting 95* would kill it, but I did finally toss it up on a cooling pad and that has helped some. I know the 10.3 official release are scheduled soon and I hope they run a bit cooler than the beta... -

different drivers will effect temperatures and power draws, depends how they load the GPU
That is just the nature of it. Temperature and power draw often have to be sacrificed for higher performance.... -
Ahh I'm so frustrated. I uninstalled the 10.3 drivers and downloaded the drivers straight off the asus website which I think is 10.2 and no matter what I do the temperature monitoring programs dont show any temps. I've used 2 separate ones (which worked previously, one being hwmonitor). What am I doing wrong here...
I ended up puting 10.3 back on and bammo temps work again... -
I just tried going back to original drivers on the drivers CD (10.1) and still no temp readings showing up in HWmonitor. Do I have to run some sort of ATI driver cleaner to revert back to 10.2?
-
-
Yes hwmonitor. But like I said it is not detecting them after putting back 10.2. I haven't tried the cleaning utility yet.
I'm guessing that I remove the ati catalyst with the uninstall then run the ati cleaner? Then reinstall 10.2 off asus support. Will try this later today. -
-
yeah i'm using hwinfo and did not have to wipe anything from switching drivers for the temp monitor to work
-
Link to HWInfo
http://www.hwinfo.com/download32.html
Grab the latest beta version. -
Ok guys. Will try this when I get home from school. Just confusing why hwmonitor would stop working with a driver change.
-
-
used driverclean utility and got the temps working in hwinfo. They are not displayed by Hwmonitor or by furmarks temp reading. Which number should I be looking at as the one for concern (core)?
thanks for everyones help -
I saw somebody earlier mention that the Power4Gear overclock button+software doesn't really do anything performance-wise. Is there any way to actually make it helpful? I'm not too keen on GPU O/C'ing
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Got the latest HWInfo version and now I can see my 4870 temps!
Thanks and +rep -

cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
but that is more of a pain, although through HWInfo it is still a few clicks, it is the same type info as hwmonitor which I prefer
