    K guys have a question!

Just bought the G73. Now there is a one touch OC button but also a setting in the bios called "overclock mode" and you can set it to Turbo or normal.

Can someone please explain to me what those two different features do and how it overclocks and maybe the difference between the 2?

    THanks!!!!

They do the same thing. The button toggles the bios setting also. It's a 7% OC, your bus goes from 133 to 142.

    Awesome! Thanks Mandrake.

So, because there is all this thermal safety stuff built into the I7, is it worth it to just have turbo mode on at all times? Or is it just safer to leave it off.

    Thanks dude!

I'm no expert but I don't think the 7% overclock will hurt anything, although it also probably doesn't add much performance either. That being said, this thing runs so cool that I always have my turbo mode enabled.

It won't hurt it but remember if you OC the i7 you are also OC'ing the memory. Test and see how well it works for you.

It makes a big difference when benchmarking with the 920.

    Cool. I will experiment.

Last question. It says everywhere that it also overclocks the GPU. I have tried every GPU monitoring program out there but no matter what I do with this overclock button, the only thing that changes the GPU clocks is when its on battery.

Does it actually overlock the GPU?

I don't think it overclocks the GPU either but I thought it was supposed to. Would have been a nice quick way to overclock (CPU & GPU) for those not wanting to mess with it a bunch.

Yeah. Even in the official specs, it says twin turbo mode is supposed to OC the gpu as well.

Is there an asus tech email we can ask about it?

Me? I'm at work. I just called Asus and there is still no update on my system. It's been two weeks and they said they would escalate it. I also canceled my order for the M11x. Just not the right time to buy it but I kept my order for the monitor. So if my G73 doesn't come back soon I'll be benching my T60p. :p

i dont know what to say about the time frame now. seems like you'll be waiting at least another 2 weeks as well....so bring on the t60p!! lol

twin turbo simply raises the blck from 133 to 142 (I think 142 - is 7% overclock)

K opened mine up and it has 1066 Hynix ram. Not 1333

So, will the processor actually use the 1333 ram or is it just better OC headroom?

You'll get better timings from the 1066 memory. The i7 architecture can take advantage of the faster memory since there is no fsb but the latency goes up. Unless your buying better 1333Mhz memory you might as well stay with the lower latency 1066 memory.

Did some new bench vids. I was doing some outdoor videography during my RMAs and haven't found (didn't try that hard ;) ) the G73 vid settings I had (prob should have noted those), so my auto focus goes a little nuts here and there. Check out the channel for up to 720p HD.

I'm in no hurry, but I intend on retaking a top 5 Vantage spot and seem to have the GPU now to do it. I'm getting a 466 score on Heaven 1.0 while my X1 weaker GPU scored either 449 or 451. Doesn't sound like much, but it does mean something imo.

    @ Mandrake Thanks man.

both the Nvidia Hair and Water tessilation demos run on ATI. Ive seem links for them on the internet but most have been taken down.

Does anyone know where to download these demos or can they be PM'd?

    Thanks!

I got these timings with the stock G73.
    Is this the stock?!
I got an A2 model, and it's supposed to be 1066, but this rates at 1422Mhz??

Hehe, mine says 1424 with that program, and the other scores are about 10% higher than yours. I wouldn't trust it. I like HWinfo32, it has been dead on on everything I've ever needed it for.

1422 and 1444 are the same speed...just a decimal getting multiplied (like a bus of 133.3 vs 133.7)

are those stock or with the twinturbo (OC) enabled?

That is what I thought but am not as familiar with these as I have never had one. Shame they do not give you more blck headroom than the 7% :( (unless I am wrong maybe?)

Man....coming from the desktop world, all these locked down laptop BIOS's (AW seems to be the most open here) are ANNOYING

Wasn't the W90 alot more open?

It seems like all the i7 laptops are locked down like they are worried we will melt them of something ;)

Yes it was due to the turbo being enabled. The other readings are all over the place, they actually show faster when I have the turno off, over 12k on top 2 and over 10k on memory write. Plus my timing shows 4-9-9-24 which has to be wrong.

so I've been reafing here about my new lappy. Too much, that I'm getting tunnel vision! :)

    anyhoo...
1st: I have stock cooling. I do have some ICD7 lying around. Should I pop her open and put it in the CPU/GPU? is it tough to get to?
I get to about 96 degrees C. in furmark in about 5 min. at stock settings for reference.

Now, is ICD7 the way to go as well? Or is OCZ freeze better?

2nd: I'd like to OC the GPU a bit and see how it handles.

    **************************************
UPDATE: Nevermind. I got the and gpu clock tool from guru3d, and it is working! All is well.
    thanks!
edit2: Note that the one I am using, that's working, is 0.9.2.6 Older than the one not working, which was 0.9.8
Is the one I'm using correct???

edit3: I ran vantage, all stock cool with OC at 800/1100 respectively. I got P9061 with defaults in Vantage.
I think I'm happy with that.

    **************************************

I got 10.3 drivers. I downloaded AMD GPU CLOCK 0.98. It installs. Tells me I gotta run it as admin. I do, and it fails to load.

    failed. No valid devices found

    is the error I get.
I got Win 7 x64 Prof. installed. Did a clean install of it myself with no bloatware. Runs excellent.

Do I have the wrong version of AND Gpu clock tool or something???

    @sidshock

    1. Check your temps during games not furmark. If they go over 90c then consider replacing thermal paste/pads.

I prefer OCZ freeze over ICD7 because of easier cleanup. Also there is a warranty sticker over one of the cpu screws. Remember that before tearing it apart.

    2. I can't help with the AMD GPU clock since I don't use it. :(

So ive had my g73 for 3 days now. Sometimes i can play games for an hour and then crash, or play for a minute and then crash with the latter being more common. I just attempted a vantage test and it crashed during the 2nd graphics test.

I take it that i have a bad GPU and i need to RMA?

    Using 10.3 drivers btw

My G73 gets here weds or thurs with only a 6200 wifi and a 128GB indilinx drive.

In other words it has the 720qm chip, but I've fooled with turbo clocks and whatnot on my desktop i7.

I read the first 90 pages of this, and an overclocking method for non-extreme chips had not yet been determined. Has one been found? or do we know the PLL used so we can mess with the BCLK from windows?

Ideally we could just lock the i7s at turbo multiplier speeds as I saw drake mention earlier (I did it with my desktop).

I actually did fudge with a bios on my old dell i9300 (for FSB control) (which died 4 years later). Alternatively, a bunch of us can try emailing ASUS or something, they tend to be responsive, even if not accommodating.

I dunno how to post screen shots but my G73 w/ 12GB RAM 1066MHz only got an 11588 3DMark06 score.

    WHAT CAN I DO?

    I ordered a 920XM, what else can I do?
