Can't tell you the temps because I have a different machine (with lower temps lol) but you can expect fps in crysis around 30avg fps all high 1920x1080 and metro around 35 or so high settings DX11 1920x1080 no tessalation and no advanced DAF with an HD5870m overclocked. fps may vary, as my OC'd card has little memory oveclock, and the G73Jh can push I think 800/1100 which will help get better performance.

That being said, the JW can easily be overclocked around 800/1600/1450 and you will get the same results, and the temps should be around 85C varying by your ambience temps and other factors.

Remember that not all GPUs are equal and you may not achieve such clocks. That being said, I recommend the JW simply because the GPU performance will be around the same, but you will get extras like the 740qm CPU, USB 3.0 etc with the JW.

this is the closest thing i could find to a 3 strikes counter

    PrevGen1
The design we’ll call PrevGen1 is a 2 CPU Socket rack-mount server system designed
circa 2005. The initial problem investigated was a “3 strikes counter” failure. The 3
strikes counter indicates that something bad has happened at least 3 times. It isn’t very
specific. This problem only occurred on one or two systems and took up to a week to
    record a failure.
After much top level probing it was found that one of the system clock chips was
disabled. More investigation showed that it was becoming disabled at sometime during
normal operation. Investigation now centered on the I2C buss that could bring in a
disable command to the clock chip. With bios changes the I2C buss traffic was increased
such that failures occurred on an hourly basis, confirming I2C as the source of the
clocking problem. Probing of the I2C buss showed noise spikes on the data buss. The
repetition rate of these spikes indicated a SVR switching node as the source. By probing
the I2C and various SVR switching nodes at the same time the problem was traced back
    to a 1.5V SVR (see Figure 2).

I have looked everywhere, and I haven't been able to go through this whole thread. but I have an issue that i can't seem to resolve. for my G73 i7 720qm won't ever leave 7.0 multiplier. I never see it go up to 13 or higher. It has the newest bios on it. I am at a loss and the benchmarks are really low. I got 6600 in 3dmark06

I don't know what else to do. I have tried turbo on and off. Any ideas? this laptop is so sweet I feel like its not reaching full potential.

what i fear is that the intel turbo boost drivers are not installed or working properly to adjust the multiplier... i am so lost on how to fix this.

I think only 820 is the highest the core will go. the drivers crash if I OC it to 825.

wow..so it really is hit or miss with these suckers. mine would do 850/1150 and no higher...sometimes i would get lucky and pull a 860/1160 off...rarely.

whats the gpu clock values? How is your cpu clock so high? Setfsb?

yea it's basically hit or miss, but it also depends on the driver version. I used to be able to OC the core to 800 on my old laptop but after updating to 10.3+ drivers, it wouldn't OC to more than 785 core.

the gpu clock values are at 820/1350. my cpu is OCed using setfsb with the diagnostic PLL. it could probably be OCed even more but I only have 1066mhz ram. =\

Different drivers will be stable at different OCs as you pointed out, you just have to test everything out because sometimes a driver with a lower OC will still perform better than another driver with a higher OC

    WOW..
    I'm barely getting 12,000-12,500 on 3dmark06 on a 1024x768 (the default trial one) whilst you're almost at 14,000 on a 1600x900 resolution!

I wonder how much would you get at "default resolution (1024) so we could compare "apple-to-apple".. maybe around 18k??...hehe who knows...

    1. What are the steps you have taken to optimize your system?

    2. Does it really make a difference, in practice, while gaming? (Performance/Graphics wise)

Thanks loads for your help and nice optimization you've done out there.

    Regards

Actually, in 1024x768, I only get about 14.6k in 3dmark06.

I just go through the system trying to see what's the highest stable OC I can obtain while running 3dmark06 without the drivers crashing. After that, I run a furmark to make sure it can sustain 100% load for ~10-20min.

I don't usually OC in games unless it's crysis or BFBC2. When I play SC2, I'm afraid of the computer crashing in the middle of rated games so I usually play that at fully stock settings. I've been lazy and I haven't really tried stability testing for the CPU OC (and I have gotten blue screen once with a CPU OC), but since I don't have the g73 PLL for setfsb, the only clock I can obtain with the diagnostics PLL is 1.75ghz for some reason...

to bad that the cpu has "jumping" values. The performance could be lot higher...
    E:
    @Winkyeye
in setfsb, how much have u add PLL, that cpu could be 3d Mark stable?

hmm I just got a stable OC to 1.85ghz using the diagnostic PLL in setFSB, I ran orthos for 7 minutes and it seemed stable. it crashed at the next highest clock, but I don't really have enough time to run orthos for any longer.

will run some benchmarks in the morning/afternoon

ugh it seems like I can't reproduce the 1.85ghz OC that I got twice last night and this morning... eh 1.8ghz is still decent I guess.

How come we don't have any JW benchmarks posted in here. This thread doesn't specify the JH model.

with gary's new vbios i can clock my gpu to
    840/1100 - 9164 points (3DMark Vantage)
    that's maximum i can get
the memory is too much low :(
    any suggestions guys?
i can put the memory to 1400 but only without using 3D when i open 3dmark and test it crashes
1100-1110 is stable and i can run the test to the end

and btw i don't see any difference in the results overclocking the CPU to 150 FSB

i think if i go with the stock vbios i can get more but i will have more chances of getting GSOD
anyway 840/1100 is better than stock definitelly
i guess i will have to get used to that

someone posted clocking the memory to 1300 omg

no one had the core that high, you may have seen the shader core speed on a GTX 460m from the JW model or a desktop 5870 but definitely not the 5870m

How accurate is passmark? I just ran it with my new system to compare to my old gateway 6860FX. My G73 scored 1447 while my 6860 scored 1480. The only test the gatway was better in was 2d graphics...

no way he can get that result with 800/1100
    he would get around 9000
can you test if you have 3dmark vantage

Drivers can easily account for a few hundred points on the GPU score. I found that 10.6 were the best for Vantage for me. You can also tweak some settings in the driver to get more performance
