The hardware id is HSD06A5. Other than the bleed it is a very nice screen for a TN panel - nice and bright with decent viewing angles.

I just found out that it is a Hannstar HSD173PUW1. I hope that is a good thing.

Its the same exact screen i have but i dont have any of the bleed your speaking of... Maybe a smidge of it at the top if any at all but i have seen some screens with like 3 inches of bleed on the top/bottom or both so im not sure how bad the bleed is on yours ?.. Also when people take pictures of it that makes it a 100 times worse then in person..

That is the same screen I have in my machine. I definitely haven't had a problem with backlight bleed. I'm with Quadzilla on this one, my screen might be a little dime, but the contrast is phenomenal. I have never had a laptop do black so well.

Yeah the screen is certainly not the brightest but makes up for it in details with those awesome blacks... Very inky blacks..

Gah all you people getting you G73jw so fast! :)

How long did it take for your laptop to ship from Gentechpc? I ordered my laptop from xoticpc (to avoid CA tax from Gentech since I live in CA) and the laptop went into the production phase last Thursday and is expeted to ship end of this week or beginning of the next. They definitely take too long! They said removing the blue-ray drive is quick and easy.

What else did you order with the machine ?.. Did you have the paste redone ?...

Removing the Bluray is one screw under the access panel on the bottom so yeah its very easy and swapping the faceplate to the new drive is also easy...

Just the blue ray removed, nothing else. They said they do all sorts of tests on the laptop before they ship though.....

Looks like you and I are in the same boat tnad. I ordered mine from xoticpc on Sept 13th and I feel like I've been stuck in production/shipping forever! Aside from that their customer service has been pretty responsive. I just wish they had more accurate information about their prep time before shipping...

Ordered mine from Xotic late Wednesday night the 15th and it shipped Monday the 20th--should be here later today. Got a memory upgrade, the 6200 wireless, one hybrid drive, re-paste and the 'rush' option.

Yeah no rush option for me which means I have to wait in line in the production phase to get the downgrade from blue-ray and that's probably at least 7 business days. They said they have a very large amount of orders going through production.

I have back-light bleed about an inch and a half in (top and bottom). I only notice it on a black screen and a bit on letter-boxed movies. I think I'm just going to live with it because everything else on the laptop is amazing. My screen is also one of the brightest I've ever used and I've had well over a dozen laptops. I was able to adjust the the EQ setting to Rock which cut down on the rattles quite a bit. These speakers are VERY LOUD by the way.

If anyone else wants two finger scrolling and three finger gestures here is a link to a driver which is working great for me.

Got it a few hours ago. First impressin is it is HUGE. I looked at it at Best Buy but it's like furniture, always looks smaller at the store. I'm going from a Dell 710m so the G73Jw is 2.13 times bigger in footprint.

Just received mine and posting on it now. I seem to be in a dilemna however. I can't seem to make recovery discs with the AI Recovery program because the start button is greyed out. It also states that there is no recovery partition. Thoughts? I replaced one of the HDDs with a SDD on my order with GenTech if that helps any.

Yes chances are the hidden partition for the recovery disc creation is gone ... Im sure they just cloned the main partition as i think most resellers just do this and dont move that hidden partition over as well because space is generally scarce on SSDs over traditional HDs..

I see. I guess I should have opted for the recovery discs option before I placed my order. So am I out of luck in making my discs or is there an alternative somewhere? Kind of in a hurry since I have to head back to my apartment in LA so any help would be appreciated.

Edit: Scratch that, Ken solved the problem. So awesome.

Hey everyone, thanks for the great thread! I just placed my order with Ken today, and I'm psyched!

This is going to replace a 4 year old Macbook Pro. I was alittle sad to hear the RAM comes in 4 2gig modules, but oh well, I'll just have to upgrade all of them if I want to boost it up to 16 gigs.

Overall looks like a great machine, can't wait for it to get here!

    Hi, all

Does anyone know what is the average FPS + TEMPS you would get when playing a game like Crysis or metro 2033 when this notebook GPU is over clocked

I have seen the video on youtube of the G73JW playing Crysis and the FPS seemed lower than the G73JH also not as smooth. (bit disappointed)

CAN THE G73JW MATCH THE G73JH WHEN OVER CLOCKED

    THANKS

Got mine yesterday and i"m knuckles deep in this sucker! :p I really love the look of this machine and the service from Gentechpc was AWESOME...Thanks Ken.

My idle temps for my CPU are between 45 and 50c. Load with prime 95 is the low 70's. Gpu idles low 40's and 20 mins of furmark topped out at 85c. I did get the repaste.

    Vantage scores:
    stock 259.12 = p7429
    New 260.63 = p8597

Holy bloatware Batman!!! I used some very helpful posts in the jh owners lounge to see what was useful or not. Probably should have done a fresh install but I usually wind up doing that once a year anyway.

I have read some people are having missing keystrokes with the keyboard. I have noticed this but.. I attribute this to getting used to the chicklet design. Spacebar is my most noticeable problem. More time should tell.

I have also noticed a small popping noise once in a while while I'm clicking around in windows. It's not too noticeable or bothersome but will definitely keep an eye (or ear :p) out for this.

Will be putting some games on today but I foresee nothing but joy! I'm really lovin it so far..just got to get used to the size. I'm coming from a dell xps m1530...Lol. The backpack is nice but seems a little small for my needs. I'm considering the Slappa M.A.S.K. KOA or Highfive?

Thanks to all the posters here. Your GREAT!!!!!

Just got mine last night but not from xoticpc. On Thursday, I canceled my order with xoticpc and I placed an order with Powernotebooks.com. I received it on FRIDAY! It took ONE DAY for Powernotebooks.com to get this beast to me factory sealed! Big thank you to Donald!

I did a fresh install and partition and tried Starcraft 2 on all Ultra settings. Everything ran smooth when playing campaign with the occasional hiccup when things got intense (ie. large number of units fighting). I suspect I will have to bump it down to High settings for multiplayer. Coming from the MBP 15", the game looked totally different on this machine! My eyes were bleeding from visual overload!!

I'm still getting used to the keyboard design of this thing. I feel its a bit cumbersome compared to the MBP.

Haven't been on a windows machine for a while and was wondering if anyone can recommend some good software for backups (like time machine) and monitoring cpu temps (I'm using speedfan but wondering if there's something better).

I was also wondering if there was any way to change the function keys so that I wouldn't have to press fn+fn[num] just to change brightness or sound?

Backups? Here's one that will do the job nicely, and it will perfectly clone your HDD too. Personally, I prefer to backup my HDD's as a bootable 'clones'. In this way, if I ever have an HDD corruption, or failure, a simple HDD swap puts me back in business in less than 10 minutes.

EASEUS ToDo Backup (and it's FREE!)

AND, there is also a plug-in of this software, that you can add to these suites of helpful tools:

Ultimate Boot CD for Windows (BartPE/WinPE environments - You can create bootable USB flash drives of these too)

    and/or

    Ultimate Boot CD (Linux environment)

Also, these suites, in and of themselves, offer several other backup options..... and a boat-load of other cool goodies!

    Good stuff & works great!

    ENJOY!

    :)

I've always found Powenotebooks.com (and Donald for that matter) to be very responsive. I am sticking to my original decision to hold out for the G53 but I'm glad to hear that Starcraft is playing well for you. I'll be downloading the high-def version of LOTRO and I'm eager to see how that plays on my new system...in a couple of weeks.

LOTRO highres should look really good with the G73jw. It even looks great with my old m1730. I played it for a bit to compare to WoW. Too much lag on the servers and combat animations do not flow too well. It's hard to find something you like after WoW.

I noticed Gentech is now offering the Intel 6300 wireless card installment, complete with the 3rd antenna for $75!

I'd still say the 6200 is the way to go, but that's just my opinion. Guess it depends on how future proof you want to be, right? :p

The biggest difference is that the 6200 supports 350 Mb/s while the 6300 supports 450 Mb/s.

The 6200 uses 2 antennas, the 6300 uses 3 antennas.

    You can take a look here: Intel® Centrino® Ultimate-N 6300 and Intel® Centrino® Advanced-N 6200 Overview

To make full use of the 6300 and its throughput, you'd need a pretty new top of the line router.

I think most people should be more than fine with the 6200, but maybe if you do a boatload of transferring files on a wireless network or something, maybe you want that extra speed (again, assuming you have the right router).

Was your order with a credit card or cash payment? I know they can start working on the laptop sooner with a CC payment + testing period. Not sure if other retailers test theirs but that is why xotic takes longer.

Just ordered mine from them too so we'll see how long it takes :)

Guess my overall time won't be that long if they don't test it

Similar experience with xotic. Ordered on the 13th, laptop got put in for customization on the 14th for a hard drive change and a re-paste. Got told on the 7th business day that one of their customization guys quit unexpectedly (like that's my problem) and that my lappy won't be ready until the 10th business day. So, here I am hoping that they finally ship it off tomorrow. Seriously? I whole 14 days to fit in a hard drive and re-paste?
