Cool. Let us know how was Metro 2033...
I've been unsure what to buy : G73JH-B1 or G73JW-A1. But now my choice is (almost) done. I'll go with the JW![]()
Thanks for that 40 pages thread.

I didn't see much cards that could handle it on ultra ...I think the 480 (?) and Crossfire (?).
-
"G73JW

<DFN title="Random Access Memory (Computerspeicher)"></DFN>
<DFN title="Random Access Memory (Computerspeicher)"> That's a lot of ground to make up before it can be deemed playable. Maybe with Beta and some insane overclocking it might be able to hit ultra at very low res, but even then I have my doubts. If I can manage to squeeze out high at 1080p...oh yeah, I will be estatic .
Downloading it from steam right now, so I should know in a couple hours. I'll let everyone know how it goes down.
Sorry for the wierd font, copying from notebookcheck hosed it up!</DFN> -
Yeah the test I read may have used a different resolution.
*awaits your test* -
Glad to hear that you guys are very happy with your purchase and the service from Gentech. I was about to order my laptop from there until I discovered the unfortunate consequence of living one hour away from Gentech....
-
Yeah you will have to tone down Metro2033 alot to deem it playable and even the Xfire 5870 M17x are not playing it maxxed out to give you an idea...
-
No DX11 hardware can actually play at DX11 levels yet
You thinking of doing a short review there quad? You could probably just copypaste half the JH's review and update the rest
-
Yeah I really figured as much. I think my happy medium is either gonna be 1080p at medium settings or high at 1600x900 or maybe even as low as 1366x768. I should know in 34 minutes though! -
I have tried to give some good impressions and im sure others will fill in the blanks along the way..
Even my desktop struggles with that game at 2560x1600 maxed out...
-
LOL, regardless, if someone reads all of your posts, they will get a great idea of what this machine is about.
From what I've heard, and will probably experience in 10 minutes 50 seconds, you would probably have to crossfire your crossfires to play comfortably at those settings haha. -
Ken Lee! help! i am in asia now
can i buy G73JW from gentechpc?
do you ship internationally? -
-
Okay, so at stock speeds on the GPU, 1920x1080 res and very high settings Metro 2033 averaged about 15 fps for me, with a high of 34, a low of 9 and a sustained low of about 12 when the action picked up. So at least there was a definite performance improvement from the beta nV driver
Not playable, but better than I expected. Gonna try and run through with the same settings with 800/1600 clock. I'm Furmarking it right now just to make sure my temps will be good at this level.
Holding steady at 85C for 12 minutes, gonna go back for round 2! -
Lol..
Quadzilla's G73-JW review...
Pasted below is 200 different posts about the machine ..
I did not take the time to copy paste each post so you will have to click on each link to find out what i said ... -
-
Well the game is pretty much unstable for me at 800/1600. My frame rates were a little higher, but I couldn't get very far before the game would just lock up. I had no illusions of playing Metro at those settings, that was just more to satisfy an academic curiousity. Okay, gonna try and find the happy medium between graphics and playability before I hit the sack.
Oh yeah, sorry guys I only have freebee fraps, so I can't really post a decent 30 second video until I get further in the game. -
So after playing for a little while, I am happy to say that Metro 2033 is almost playable at 1920x1080p on high settings with a fps usually between 20-30 and is very playable at 1080p on med settings with an fps typically between 40-50, occasionally dropping below 30 when there's a lot (a whole lot really) going on.
Anyway, anyone who has the game and this machine should be quite pleased with its performance -

Hello guys.. I´m another nowcomer in this forum despite I´ve been reading here since G73jh release.. but now is the time for a buy of G73jw.. I´ve read all the stuff about that from Ken, Quad and other happy owners
I´m checking the news every hour and I´m pretty loking forward it but I´ve got a little problem. I live in Czech republic and I wanna buy it from US. I know about all good resellers, posted in owners lounge (GenTech,Xotic,Powernotebooks etc), but I really can´t decide which one should be the best for me
I will most likely pay with Paypal and I want to get the lowest shipping which I could (and the best price of G73 too). So guys, could you help me to solve these problems please?
-

I live in Asia, I've decided to go with Ken @ GenTech and the current G73-Jw. He told me shipping is flatrate $149 USPS Priority Mail. The sad part is, I learned just recently that I will have to wait another MONTH for this. I couldn't get my finances in order... so October 25th, please hurry. What will I do until then?!?
Work, I guess... -
100+ USD? -
-
i wonder does they take care of custom duty also like if someone order it from india ?
-
Are you using stock DX11 options on very high 1920x1080? Or are you going for a lower revision of DX to get better framerates? I haven't tested much yet myself. -
Haha, I think its games like Metro 2033 that will ensure the gaming desktop industry will stay in business.
edit: that is 2-3 fps gain on the max score, not average. -
Since DX11 is more than just tessalation, we can enjoy a bit better visuals with decent fps. try it! You should be able to get more fps than me or at leas the same -
-
-
The main issue with my card is the memory clocks, which I can't touch much, so I can only really bring up the core. Still, if you can get 800/1600 clocks you should actually get better performance than me OCd. My current best stable is 840/1030. Other users, specially G73JH users, can get over 800/1100.
Anyways, the point is that you can surely run high settings at 1920x1080 on your machine on DX11. Using the same settings on DX9, DX10 and DX11 yield similar performance with DX9 giving the highest fps, but DX11 does look better. Like... more vibrant or alive. -
Hi Everybody, I'm going to be ordering a G73jw next week and am looking for
any suggestions or thoughts on how to configure it. I'm trying to keep it
under $2000. I'm opting for these extras:
1. Cpu-Gpu repaste
2. Recovery discs
3. Blue keyboard with white wasd keys
Thats about $1900. Do you guys think any of the dead pixel or extended
warranties are worth getting? I'm going to order from Ken at Gentech pc. He
has been really helpful by answering e-mails, posting videos and by being
very active on these boards. What are your thoughts on the blu-ray drive
vs. the multi drive? Thanks -
Dudes, don't sweat Metro 2033. It's not just demanding, but a horribly coded game.
Even though it was made for NVIDIA, it still runs like garbage. Look at the benchmarks of the GTX 480/GTX 470. It's not awesome.
4A Games definitely spent most of their time getting Metro 2033 running on Xbox and PS3 and just said screw you PC Gamer, go spend $1,000 to get our game to run (upgrade PSU for GTX 480). -
I don't think you will actually need the repaste based on the temperatures people are reporting, but...I am getting it also. I don't think the dead pixel warranty is worth it, besides don't you get a free 30 days? I haven't heard many complaints about dead pixels showing up after that first 30 days. The extended warranty, I'm on the fence about, but I heard you could buy an extra year in the first 60 or 90 days after you buy your machine. I think I'm going to wait until the end of that time period to decide based on if I have any problems by then or not. -
Thanks for the input Phoebe, Yah I'm on the fence about the drive. I'm not
really into blu-ray but I'm not against the idea of being able to rip one to the
hdd if the opportunity arises. What do you think about the wireless card
upgrade? After searching the boards it seems to be that the intel card upgrade
is just to insure you get a name brand card and not what happens to be the
cheapest one at the moment of build. I think I'll wait on the extended warranty
deal too. Plus I think I'm going for the American flag keyboard... It is really Cooool... -
-
Just ordered mine today at Gentech. I'm getting the repaste, 6200 wireless, and the American flag kb mod...
I spoke with Ken and I hope to get it Friday if all goes well.
-
Congrats Jhan1
.. You made a good choice on all fronts ...
That Flag keyboard mod is very slick.. -
Looking forward to getting mine on Friday as well! Sounds like the G73JW popularity is starting to ramp up! -
The camera really makes the lights stand out but in person it wont be distracting at all...
Alot of those angled shots as well make the keyboard look super bright but from top down you can see its just bright enough without being an eyesore... -
I'm also in the market for a G73. Amazon has the older model A1 for 1620 no tax/free shipping. I saw gentech and other modder sites, and I'm curious - how exactly do they pick up warranty? According to the sticky, I'd be losing the ASUS warranty and essentially picking up the reseller warranty. Also, do you have to pay sales tax?
What are the differences between the JH and JW? So far, I noted a marginally faster processor, RAM, one USB 3.0 port, and the video card. Is there anything that isn't mentioned that a notebook geek such as myself would care about? To me, the changes listed don't really make the extra $200 worth it. Or am I just nuts?
This is for my wife who is a gamer but not as flashy as me and probably won't be using the laptop for much beyond moderate gaming... -
you gotta follow some guides on the forum here to update the bios/vbios for the jh-A1 otherwise you're stuck with not being able to update video drivers without serious problems. This was the main reason I chose the jw. The jw also runs a lot cooler. I'm guessing Gentechpc won't charge you the sales tax (~$150) if you live outside their state (CA).I had to order from Xopticpc because I live in CA.
-
stock wifi or intel 6200???
pls , i dont know which to choose .. -
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
If you are only going to use it for Internet access, and you don't have any range issues...stay with the stock card. It is about 3-5 times faster than your Internet download speed...maybe even more depending on the download speed you get from your ISP.
If you are going to be transferring data between computer using WiFi, and/or you have range issues, upgrade to the Intel® Centrino® Advanced-N 6200. -
will it affect BT download speed?? or normal download speed if using stock wifi card??? i download BT daily
-
i just ordered from ken @ gentechpc ^^ waiting for my beast to be arrive!
-
Congrats Prevail... What card did you decide on? I went with the 6200. Whats another $35 when your in this deep..Lol When do you expect to get your rig?
-
With that being said, it can still be played very well on this machine and you can still get good performance at native res. The biggest screw you from 4A to PCers is the very Xbox like interface, and the very Xbox like save game structure. LOL they made no effort to whatsoever to port this game to PC. -
Very cool, looks like we have had a lot of buyers over the past 3 days, congratulations to you all, your gonna love this machine!
-
Just got mine today. Added an Intel 160GB SSD and a 1TB hard drive, as well as a 6200 for WiFi. So far I'm loving it. I do however have quite a bit of backlight bleed on the top and bottom as well as some low end distortion on the speakers low end. Anyone else experiencing these issues? Also has anyone gotten drivers to enable two finger scrolling working? Thanks.
-
Cant say i have any Backlight bleed at all .. Screen is black all around... Can you go into the device manager and see what screen you have ?...
The speakers are not my forte but overall sound good maybe a little distorted from time to time but you should be able to tweak them with all the software included..
I have not even used the touchpad for more then 2 seconds.. Im a mouse guy ..
Asus G73JW at GenTech for 1645$
