Why? The BIOS shouldn't have to change for a different video adapter.

For laptops it seems to matter. When new video cards are released Alienware Clevo do release new bios that support the GPU.

I just got metro 2033 on that sale on steam for cheap, and now that i have it, i was wondering what the best settings are to play this at for the g73jw. native res? dx 9? 10? 11?

mainly the direct x one, i can fiddle with whatever else after that i guess.

Chastity the 470M is definitely faster than the HD5870M but totally not worth it.

    GeForce GTX 470M

XoticPC is already offering it on their Sager and it's $395 upgrade over the GTX 460M.

With the ridiculous overclocking the HD5870M and with the stability of the new drivers from AMD, the HD5870M performance is definitely around 15% higher than 460M overclocked.

The 470M looks to be around 15% faster than 460M, and it's on GF104, my guess with stable overclock should beat HD5870M.

But considering the 460M already costs a $100 more than the HD5870M and and additional $395...

If you wait a few months and see what the HD6870/HD6970 mobile based on Barts, totally not worth it, total waste of money.

Either go with 460M/HD5870M or just wait for HD6870M IMO.

The way I see it. The 470M still can't game with Tessellation on high, on medium, which HD5870M/460M can also. The 470M may be able to use AA on their games, but we already know HD5870M can run MLAA with most games with steady framerate. I see no advantages for the $395 cost. If the 470M was like $99 upgrade, then I'd say, worth it, but as is, it's a total waste of money if you ask me.

DX10. Visually you really won't notice any difference, the tessellation is horribly implemented in Metro 2033, both artistically and coding. Meaning it didn't make a significant visual improvements vs the ridiculous performance hit. They could have gotten the same result with likely a 90% improvement on performance if they wanted, but 4A games are morons.

There is a lot of technology in Metro 2033. But if the guns, weapons and items all look deteriorated, and dirty, DX11 or DX 10 doesn't matter. If the main environment is underground with the same brown, gray and black background and occasionally on the surface with so much debris and fog can't see much, again DX 10 or DX11 won't matter visually.

ruckus i just tried the dx11 option, and even at 1280x720 it hurts the performance to ridiculous levels. i think i get the perfect balance of performance and pretty looks on dx10 at their high settings at 720.

use 1600x900, high settings, DX9, and Overclock a bit to get stable performance. In those settings I get around 50fps. Or try 1440x810 if it hits your performance too much.

DX11 hurts a lot, but it is possible if you disable the advanced DX11 features. Just don't play on 1920x1080 if you value your frames. We just don't have the memory bandwidth for that particular game.

DX10 works well too and does look better (more alive) but it does give you a bit less performance.

    Hi guys,
Just got my gw73jw-a1 and I am pretty impressed so far (2hours :) )
Just got a quick question, how do you adjust the backlight keyboard?
Plus has anyone got any tips for the first few hours of setting up? (yes I will be reading the whole thread as well)

Just replaced my bleeding Hannstar with a AUO 1900x1080 and the improvement is great. It is a brighter screen but the biggest difference to notice how much more detail to images, video etc. I think it is showing a wider variety of color. I am not sure but I think screens do have a burn in period.

    Hey thanks mate
Has anyone else noticed some markings on the matte black palm rest? Mine has some, like minor scratches and stuff. It's not a return issue, looks like just minor abrasions from shipping perhaps.
Is there any tips for rejuvuenating this area? It's not massive but I can see them!

I'm looking to buy one of these, but I live in Sweden, and the retailers here only seem to offer two flavors of the G73-JW. I can simply find no Europe-based site where I can sit down and customize one to my liking before ordering. So I can't get an Intel X-25 SSD as my main drive without buying it separately, nor can I change keyboard backlight colors, nor can I get a three-antenna wireless card.

The first flavor has an i5 460M and 4gb max ram, the other i7 740QM and 8gb max ram. Neither sport blueray drives. They have weird model ids like G73JW-TY098V and -TZ130V, and not just -A1.

Any Europeans here? Where did you order yours? Did you just grab one from xoticpc.com and live with the US keyboard layout?

By merely Googling I've so far found xoticpc and agearnotebooks.com. Perhaps there are more, but they all seem to be US-based.

mine is only about 3 months old and so there is no marking yet. I think it might be the sweat from your palm stays inside with the rubber coating and eventually leaving a mark.

as for suggestion, maybe you can pressing down onto the palm rest for too hard

Sigh, my new jw-a1 just arrived, and upon powering it up I get:

Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.

I am from Estonia and was looking for a JW model myself at first. And most shops had the same models as your country has.

After looking around the web i just orderd a JH from amazon as it had the parts i need by a company that takes orders from the US and deliver them to our country. If you have a similar company that delivers form US might try amazon for the JW model. The company i used only took orders form amazon. European stores only seem to get scraps from ASUS and at extreme price. The JW-TY098V cost here about 2999USD  getting my rig form amazon for 2200USD. It is expensive as the amazone price was 1500USD someting but better then 2999 for a downgraded model :D Euro tax and country toll tax is just nuts

1st tip: clean it up: http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus/380681-asus-utility-bloatware-guide.html

2nd tip: get new video drivers. The 260.63 beta drivers here work well: NVIDIA DRIVERS 260.63 BETA. The official 260.89 or 260.99 drivers need some modding to install; guide is here: http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=183239&view=findpost&p=1135149

    @ Zorael

Hey I'm from Italy and I ordered via ebay.co.uk
You'll find an entry for HIDEvolution.
I picked up the G73JW with a few changes too. Firstly, the 940XM with Diamond paste, the one 256 GB SSD Disk and one 500GB 7200 RPM secondary disk, and 8GB RAM. Normally they'll give you 4 banks of 2GB RAM, however I asked them to put in 2 x 4GB. They also occupied the hard to get to slot which is under the keyboard.

you realize that putting a 940 in your laptop voids your warranty? also do you realize that asus only has a few vendors who are even partially authorised to do so?

Hello, I was looking at this laptop, (G73) and I was wondering if the upgrade to the i7 840 is worth $575

Will there be a big improvement in games? Will it improve things like AutoCAD and other CAD work (I use this for engineering)

If the improvement is not that much, I guess it 's not worth it, please advise.

    Thanks!

    Im getting it for gaming

But thinking over all it might give a 20 or 25% improvement or lower ?

    Thanks

most likely to be lower, may give about 5 fps more depending on the game.
however, unlike some other upgrades, this benefits overall laptop usage, not just for gaming. also if you get it from other online retailer shop like gentech, you can free IC diamond paste!
SSD has issues with slower performance overtime and also is expensive considering the high price/low volume.
(I suggest an upgrade to seagate hybrid drive through, fast and large volume, I am having a very good experience with it)
Wireless card also has an issue with performance as somewhere in this forum posted
8GB ram is enough for everything, no point to upgrade.

CPU upgrade in fact does help in various uses

I see that it will be overall useful, but not so much of an improvemnet for gaming.

But in your opinion is $575 worth the upgrade, only to get 130 Mhz of more speed?

    The answer is, absolutely not.

If you want to spend $$$ on an upgrade, by an i7-920XM ES for ~$400.

You're talking about a 7.5% boost in clock speed and a 33% boost in cache...I honestly don't know how much of a difference the cache makes (on older designs it's often been worth one speed grade, but...I don't know here). At best though I'd guess it's like a 15% bump if we assume it's worth a speed grade.

nice, but no way is it worth that much IMO-if you want that CPU, I'd go with a system that gives it as an upgrade (for less). I guess if I'm going through with my Dell order I'm getting it, but really the 1.73GHz part is a nice chip.

The 1.73 clocks upto 2.9 ghz if you overclock it goes over 3 ghz very easily this is imo fine for anything you are going to throw at a laptop. The upgrade imo is for someone that just has to have the best CPU scores on benchmark software.

Some of the 920XM ES models have some issues achieving max rated speeds. I would invest in a 940XM QS piece... none of the 940's have this issue, and are roughly $560 on ebay.

The question then lies, what kind of speeds can you get out of a 940xm ES/QS CPU? I really am generally unhappy with Asus and the G73jh video bios issue but the G73jw-3DE and 120 Hz screen may just tip me into getting one.......

I think the current drivers don't have support for the GTX 460 yet even though they should. The Betas do, and obviously the next versions should.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong though!

You are wrong, unless you modify the INI, the 260.99 will not work with the 460m...... The beta 260.63 drivers do work, with no modification.

It's easy to see the confusion, since the betas are older, and what they say is the exact opposite of how it works! Just so long as the next drivers have support I'll be happy (and I'd be really shocked if they didn't have support...but since the GTX 460 really only started shipping a month or so back I'm not super surprised).

    hey guys,

so i left my notebook idle last night and when morning comes, it went into hibernate (i think it's hibernate because i see "Resuming Windows" instead of "starting windows").

anyway, upon entering window (took slightly longer than usual), a windows message popped up saying windows was shutdown due to some error. Upon examing the log, it says "bluescreen".

I have the dump file but don't really know how to open/read it. Anyway, for the record. I was just downloading something before going to sleep, machine was not in any game at that time. Temps are normal (CPU 50C, GPU 42C), however, i forgot to reset my GPU OC settings to stock. Driver is nvidia 260.99 which i've used with no problems for the past few weeks.

should i be worry about this? I've had no bsod on the unit before and it's bout 1month old

any suggestion is welcome, thanks :)

edit: might also been a wifi adapter issue since i remember hearing the stock drivers are not good.. someone please verify this

Yay, first post for me. Anyway lol...the wireless cards in th JW and JH are Atheros right? I just got my JH the other day and the Atheros Wifi card cuts out and has incredibly high ping spikes....it annoys the living hell out of me. The Atheros wireless card effectively blows, though some don't have any issues with it that I've been reading. I just ordered an Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6200 card from Newegg. I can't wait to put it in.

Im Sorry for asking this question but between the G73JW-A1 and the G73JH-B1 which is better in terms of performance for gaming as well as how long the paste will last without having to repaste, which would be a hassle for me

My trackpad on my G73jw is now starting to act up. Sometimes unresponsive,
sometimes slow but most of the time just a frustration. I had the laptop a few months and was excellent except the past few weeks. Its mostly the scrolling that just decides to work when it feels like it. I tried just reloading drivers with some luck but doesn't last long so probably just the way it is now.

I've seen dozens of posts related to problems with the keyboard (lag) and the touchpad. It seems that the touchpad driver is buggy and is causing these problems. If you don't use the touchpad much or at all, I would just disable it in the BIOS and uninstall the driver. I always use a mouse anyway and never have liked touchpads.

ive been looking at the specs for the G73JW-XT1 and the only difference that i see between that and the G73JW-A1 is that it only has one hard drive and it does not have blu-ray, other than that am i missing out on something? would the G73JW-XT1 be a good buy over the G73JW-A1?

It depends on whether you want the Blu-ray drive and the 2nd hard drive. If you have no use for either, then the XT1 would be the better buy.

However you should also look carefully at the warranty. Is the XT1 2 Years with 1 Year of Accidental Damage Protection like the A1? If not, then that is something else to consider.

    Greetings.

Is it possible to know if the Woofer is working right?
I ask you this because the Realtek Audio Software only shows plain 2.0 stereo, not the 2.1
