Hey guys. I've been trawling the forums for a few weeks now researching the G73JW and i've finally decided to get one.

I'll be purchasing from either Gentech, BTOtech or XoticPC as these seem to be the most talked about resellers, and i'll getting it shipped to New Zealand.

Can anyone recommend a reseller with a good reputation to purchase it through? Or are they all good?

    Thanks for any info.

    Welcome in NBR,

Well all Gentech, BTOtech or XoticPC are great resellers that accept international orders. I had the same problem as you since they only accept Wire Transfer as method of payment. I kept searching for other resseller that accepts international paypal or Google Checkout and tried Portable One | Custom Laptops and Notebooks; built the way you want them! resseler and they are great and accept international paypal and GC orders. AND they were great all the way even in support after buying.
At the end, wherever you buy, you will find great support form these 4 resellers. It all depends on what payment method you are paying through.

    Good Luck

The keyboard light mod is incredible. Simple, cheap and superb results.

Won't the heat from the computer in the un-repasted JHs melt the film sooner or later though? :p

G73JW only has two antennas so you can upgrade it to the Intel 6200 at most, if not all resellers. I think the stock wifi is a standard Atheros card.

You can add a 3rd antenna but its going to require quite abit of work.. Basically a complete tear down of the machine then taking apart the LCD as well ...

Haha, two is plenty for me, from what I've heard, the less I have to open this notebook up the better. As long as my temps don't shoot up too bad after I OC, the first time I open this beast up will be in a year or two when its repaste time.

I'm thinking of getting a new laptop and it looks like I'm be getting a G73. However, I'm a little torn between the 73JW-A1 and 73JH-B1 and I'm wondering if someone can point out any little quirks that can help me decide. I've search/read some of the posts regarding the video cards, but it doesn't seem like either one really is that much better than the other.

Other than the video cards the differences are:

    1. Intel® i7-740QM in the JW, Intel® i7-720QM in the JH. We do not believe the Intel® i7-740QM is a good value at $100 more than the Intel® i7-720QM.

Since the Intel® i7-740QM only gives you 130MHz more clock speed than the Intel® i7-720QM, and the Intel® i7-720QM already has 1,600~2,800MHz, you will not see any noticeable performance difference with a 4.6~8% clock speed increase, so why pay $100 more for that? You would be far better off investing in a Solid State Primary Hard Drive.

    2. Two touchpad buttons on the JW and a single rocker button on the JH.

    3. The JW has one USB 3.0 port & 3 USB 2.0 ports. Of course the USB 3.0 port will be limited to SATA II speed (3Gb/s) if you are transferring from or to your hard drive(s). The JH has 4 USB 2.0 ports.

    4. The JW has an HDMI 1.4 port that the JH does not.

He asked about the differences between the G73JH-B1 and the G73JW-A1. Both models are the same price and have a i7-740QM.

Right...which makes the B1 totally worthless when compared to the JW-A1 since they are the same price, but the JW-A1 has items 2, 3 & 4 above that the JH-B1 does not. At that point the ONLY reason to select one over the other is if you prefer ATi over nVIDIA.

Is the backpack and gaming mouse part of the kit? Is it included in the box, no matter where you buy your laptop ?

paladin44: Thanks for the clarification between the two models. I have no personal preference between ATI and nVidia, so it looks like it's going to be G73JW-A1.

Good choice. Seems Asus is still working on finalizing the vBios for ATi users. Haven't found any post of any issues with JW so far. But then that's what I was expecting since Asus screwed themselves on the HD4870M also, not sure why, maybe someone at Asus hates ATi mobile GPUs.

Anyways, good luck with the JW and have fun. USB 3.0 for external drive should be AWESOME!!!

we have been offering the 3rd antenna with intel 6300 for about 4 months now. I still dont know why people actually buy the 6300 without a 3rd antenna.

That keyboard mod is pretty cool. I'm not convinced that it's $40 cool, but it's still cool.

IMO the multi-color ones look a little over the top for my taste, but that blue really completes the whole laptop theme.

I posted this question in a main thread but I didn't get any response so I thought I would try in one of the main G73JW threads:

Does anyone know if there is a way to control the subwoofer somehow? It's very strange, in all the speaker configurations it only lists stereo (not 2.1) and there's also no way to adjust the bass.

The Asus G73JW looks awesome. Was going to get a macbook pro(new to laptops here) but I saw this on engadget and looks compelling. We just want a good desktop replacement we can game on a bit and use as a multimedia center to stream hd throuigh xbox, etc. Any recommendations on what to go with. I can spend up to 2K. Want something reliable for at least 3 years.

The JW is great choice for what you are looking for..

As for recommendations ? like upgrades you mean ? if so i would say the stock machine is quite enough already but you may want to throw in an SSD to complete package...

Some people also opt for a better wireless card then the stock one...

Other than that the machine has pretty much everything else covered..

I purchased my machine through GentechPC and as always there service is great ...

Yeah the Vaio looks decent... The video card is not all that great but it really depends on your needs...

Things like the standard 2 year warranty and 1 year accidental warranty of the Asus make it stand out from the rest IMHO... Nice to have and even better if you dont have to pay extra :)..

The vaio comes with a gt 425m card. The only thing we play is sims 3. will that computer and gpu allow high settings in hd over and above the 330m on the 15" macbook pro 2.66 i7?

Im sure the Sims 3 will run just fine on a 425m ...I wont speculate as to how well though as i have not seen any specs on the 425m..

Might want to ask on the Vaio forums if anyone has that machine and how well it performs..

I cant say whether the 425 is faster then the Macbook GPU since i just dont know enough about it ...

As for the Qosmio well its just a matter of whether you want an 18.4 inch laptop and its features...

Your best bet is to take this discussion to this thread ...

Hey guys, new to the forum, but have been reading around for a long while now lol.

Looking to get the Asus g73jw and was amazed at the keyboard mod. But I have a quick question about that. I looked at another video to see how to take the keyboard off and the guy said you need the back part of the keyboard replaced after taking it off because of the two sided tape. If I was to attempt this mod, would it affect the keyboard performance/distort it in any way?

    Thanks.

No if you take your time removing the keyboard you wont have any issues putting it back down..

I have done it myself on a few G73s and never had an issue :)...

Resellers would be charging you for the service plus a new keyboard if everytime they removed one it was destroyed so it kinda already answers the question for you ...

Keyboard runs about $60 and they charge around $40 to mod it so it would be $100 or so for the mod ;)..

Hi there everyone, im new in the forum, but i've been following every single thread about the g73 laptop. First of all i would like to thank everyone that posted, specially to Quadzilla and Ken for the amazing work you guys did, giving information about the g73 laptop. Weeks ago my 4year old laptop's graphic card just died (Toshiba Satellite P100-400 with Nvidia 7900GS), so since then i've been looking for a good replacement and i ended up looking at the g73.

I want a laptop mostly for multimedia work, motion design, 3d modelling, etc..., but i also enjoy play games xD. So it seems G73 is the right choice for me. I was about to decide to buy the g73JH, but i found out about the JW. I like the JW more mostly because the HDMI port (that might come handy for me) and the Nvidia Card (im used to Nvidia and from what i have heard it offers a better support for professional applications, thanks to CUDA).

Sadly i can't order it from the USA from any of the resellers there, at least for the moment. Other problem is that in Europe the JW as not arrived yet, although im hoping it arrives end of this month (not far) or maybe middle of October (hope it arrives sooner). Couldn't find any info regarding the dates, so i'll ask here if anyone have any idea when it might arrive in Europe, specially in Portugal. I know some people here are from Europe, hope some of you can answer me.

To finish, sorry the long post and thanks again for all the info everyone is providing here.

Just got my G73JW today and I'm loving it. Took a few minutes to get used to this MASSIVE laptop after using a 14 inch for the past 4 years. I customized my order with the thermal compound repaste and honestly I'm not seeing much of a difference (if anything its a tad higher) from the stock compound temps that gentech and xoticpc are posting for anyone wondering if they should get that upgrade. Its still runs very cool for a gaming laptop and in comparision to the JH. Getting around 49~ idle. My only slight complaint if I can call it that - is that the fans seem like theyre always on. And they go full blast pretty quickly once gaming starts. Not sure why but I was expecting a quieter laptop than this. (not saying its loud by any means) :p

The jh is near silent even when gaming. Mine still has stock paste. It would be interesting to see if others express the same concern as you. My new g72 a1 is as loud as a MacBook pro running a windows game! Now that's loud! I expect it to lift off and hover around my room.

    Cheers,

I have read posts complaining about the JH fans being too loud. This is a subjective matter, of course. The JW is known to run cooler, so if anything the fans will be quieter than the JH, but I would expect them to be about the same overall.

Yeah they are the same and both being very quiet..

Now if you live in a completely silent place then the fans might be distracting to some or you may have overly sensitive ears :).

If you want to hear a loud laptop listen to the M17x under full load , It sounds like a leaf blower and can be heard from 2 or 3 rooms away its so LOUD..

Really, I didn't think anything could be louder than a Macbook Pro running Windows playing a game, all fans running at 6000+ RPMs. When I used to play on Macs my wife wanted to know why I was running the handy vac.

    Cheers,

I still need to test more actual music and video on mine tonight, but I did get the impression that this system can get fairly loud. I believe my volume was at the factory default of 60ish percent and I found myself turning the volume down a bit even just from hearing the system beeps and the Asus intro when first starting the system. I'll try to see what i can determine about the bass, but I did read somewhere that it's not a true 2.1 setup the way they have the sub configured. But I think loudness should be sufficient without being tinny. In your situation, keep in mind that your class will likely hear the laptop better if they're facing the screen itself as opposed to the back of the laptop due to the location of the speakers.
