I had a Macbook Pro 15inch and under full load its got nothing on the 3 fans blazing in the M17x when you have 2 video cards and a beefy CPU... There are times when i thought the machine was going to lift off from the table the fans were blowing so hard :).. Luckily ? the machine weighs 12 pounds so there was no chance of that :D..

JoshTexax, BTOtech's video review did say that "The sound system in the G73, like always, is phenomenal", if that helps at all, too. :)

A little update on my G73jw. So far its great, took a while to get used to the keyboard. So far, on 2 occasions when I booted up and got past my login screen, I would get a wierd error - something about a windows system 32 file (I really should have read what it said >_<) but a reboot solved the problem. Not sure what it is but if it keeps happening I might do a clean install unless anyone knows what the problem is from that vague description. Also, I've been hearing this really annoying high pitched squeaking recently. Driving me nuts. I think its the HDD not sure. Anyone else have or had this problem on their JW or JH?

If you go into the Control Panel>Sound and select your speakers then in the lower right click on Properties...then the Enhancement tab and click on Loudness Equalization and Equalization. Then set the Equalization to where you want it after some experimentation. I use "Powerful".

This should get it across the room :)

hey guys, I just got my asus G73JW and Im pretty happy with it. Im pretty nooby in regards to computers but I wanted to get the best gaming experience. I upgraded my drivers to thenew 260.63 beta drivers and now I want to try my hand at overclocking but I honestly have no idea what I should be doing. I researched a bit and I found it would be easier to use a program instead of manually overclocking in bios. So I downloaded MSI afterburner and here I am. No idea what settings I should change or by how much. What do you recommend? I dont want a super overclock but a decent boost without too much risk. Heres a pic with the default settings. What should I do now. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the fast response. I checked it out but the bars and numbers for the Core Clock and Memory Clock seem different. My memory clock bar maxed out reaches 880 and my core clock maxed out reaches 1625. Yours seems reversed. Am I missing something?

This is what it looks like when I tried to match where your bars are at near the Max. The Core clock and memory clock numbers look reversed from yours.

Yeah it's weird, the core is no way you can get that high and the vRAM can't be that low, like it's reversed.

you want to try run benchmark to see how it come out?

I tried reinstalling MSI afterburner and it somehow fixed the number issue. No idea why that fixed it but the numbers and bars match the ones you posted.
I ran the bench earlier today before I installed the beta drivers and got around a 7400 on 3d mark vantage.
With the beta drivers and the overclock at a slightly lower setting than the ones you had on your pic I got a 10044.
Thanks again for all your help! I can see why everyone on this forum thinks very highly of gentech. :D

    Nice looking mode Ken.
The blue color looks great to me.

This is something new that I will try on my N71JQ.

I will add this guide to my N71JQ backlight mode thread.

    Hi all,

First post on this forum. I just ordered a G73JW-A1 from Xotic (added the 128 gb Crucial SSD). I want to overclock the 460M, but I don't have much experience in this department. I know some users here have done it, can anyone give me the OC numbers they have had the most success with and what program you are doing it with?

    Thanks in advance!

I'm keeping info on overclocking for when I receive my G73jw too.
The program most people use is MSI afterburner and they select the high performance mode then they modify the following:

    core clock/shader clock/memory clock

The numbers for the above clocks I've seen so far are:
    832/1664/1425
    800/1600/1250
    800/1600/1400

10044? Maybe I'm mistaken but I think if you get a number that high then the cpu score is high and not the gpu because the nvidia physx is on and it messes the cpu score. Again I'm not sure if I'm correct.

yea after doing some reading on the other G73JW thread, I think you're right about the physx thing. I ran the FFXIV benchmark and got a 300 point increase so Im still happy.

Yeah but it's still a nice increase for the gpu score. A little overclock and it can beat the 5870m score and still less heat from what I'm reading.

Actually there is none but you can download Powerdvd9 for the G73... Why the machine ships with no Bluray software is beyond understanding seeing that it comes with a bluray player lol... Scroll down a little and you will see a link to Powerdvd9 ... Its not the best software out there so you may want to opt for buying Windvd 2010 etc..

It depends. As Quadzilla says ASUS does not provide any on the JW at this time, although they probably will in the shipments coming in later.

However if you buy it from PowerNotebooks.com with any upgrades we install and test the ASUS WinDVD 8 Blu-ray software, and give you the ASUS WinDVD 8 Blu-ray software disk.

    Hi, all

Does anyone know what is the average FPS + TEMPS you would get when playing a game like Crysis or metro 2033 when this notebook GPU is over clocked

I have seen the video on youtube of the G73JW playing Crysis and the FPS seemed lower than the G73JH also not as smooth. (bit disappointed)

CAN THE G73JW MATCH THE G73JH WHEN OVER CLOCKED

    THANKS

Hello guys.. I've finally decided to buy G73JW but now, I have another problem.. I've read some stuff about G73-B1 and I really don't know, which machine is better gaming solution.. :( :( Any advice..? :( I'm really impressed by JW, but there is still a difference between 460x5870.. :( I really need some help or I'm gonna start being crazy :D

This question comes up every day and i dont feel like typing everything over and over again so just check out this thread as a starting point... IMHO there is no clear cut answer for you, i will say as i have owned them both and am enjoying them both ;).. There are more threads dedicated to the 460m benchmarks in the Gaming forum as well so with a bit of searching you might be able to find some answers your looking for..

I'm checking this and another 3 threads almost every 5 minutes and I know about stuff, what was written here..I know about few % of GPU power advantage for Radeon and it makes me sad..(I'm not some kind of nVidia "fanboy".. Just like them a little more :) ) Now, I'm just waiting for official release of new nVidia drivers, which will (hopefully) improve 460 performance even more than beta drivers have done yet. This will be my first gaming laptop and frankly, I'd like to buy better version of this awesome ntb.

Anyway, thanks for fast reply :)

I wish i had a more clear cut answer for you but my testing with games has been all over the place with the performance differences so i wont call one a clear cut winner honestly :)..

Both are good choices and i would say just go with what interests you most :).

It's true that its not easy to decide between both, myself, before the JW arrived, wasn't sure what to do, but then i started to compare both and see which one suited my needs.

I decided for the JW (although i didn't ordered it yet), and the reason i decided for it is because I like the support that Nvidia cards give to professional applications (like 3D modeling tools). Other reason was the HDMI port and the usb 3.0 that might come handy for me. There are other small reasons, like issues resolved with the refresh of the laptop. Even though the 460m may be a bit weak in games (i think it's the same thing, from what i've been reading), it still have lot of room to improve with the drivers.

Its all about what you rather have, really. I think both laptops are awsome.

Hi guys, I'm new to this forum. I've been reading this since end of June. It's amazing to see how much valuable information you guys have and share. I was on the market for my own notebook, since I kept on borrowing my daughters. Now that school has started, they need their notebook. I decided to get my own: my special treat.

I ordered the G73JW today and it should come in next Thursday. I'm from Quebec Canada and I purchased it from reflexnotebook.ca Montreal office. I can't wait to get it. Unfortunately, I have to wait seven days ...

I'll keep you posted ! Thanks again :)

Agreed; nvidia appear to be better at creating drivers for a wide variety of apps, not just games.

I've not followed the games benchmarks too closely, but isn't the difference like 5% or thereabouts? Is that really bothering people that much? Plus its early days, likely to improve, blah blah.

The first set of drivers that are currently beta brought some nice improvements so hopefully we will see a few more in the future like that ...

For people worried about which card performs better, I can only offer this advice: Unless you are a hardcore member of "Team nVidia" or "Team ATI" (of course the decision would be easy then :)) I say don't worry about it. The performance difference one way or the other is not really significant. I would say out of the box, with no updates the ATI performs better, but after you optimize both cards (i.e. driver updates, and OCing) the performance difference is negligable. The ATI books run hotter, but still within the accepted specs for the GPU.

With that being said, I would recommend anyone to pick up the JW over the JH because of the improvements made, such as USB 3.0, hdmi, separate mouse buttons, better heat management and less bugginess out of the box.

To reiterate, you will be hard pressed to find a game or application that you can play well on the 5870m but not on the 460m or vice versa.

    Quad,

How much cooler did your g73jw run after you applied thermal paste? I'm still debating whether or not I should take mine apart when I get back to the states. Just thinking about the keyboard is giving me a headache.

It was a few degrees cooler ...

If you have good temps just leave it alone.. I only recommended it for people who thought they would want to repaste just to see if they could get better temps should pay the reseller to handle it .. it was mess since the thermal liquid leaks all over from the RAM when taking it apart and most might freak out when seeing it oozing all over the GPU when you lift the heatsink up..

So yeah just leave it be if your temps are in the 80s in furmark.. Gaming you wont see those temps anyhow..

Getting that keyboard off can be tricky if you dont use the right tool as you can damage the plastic where those 5 tabs are and then you will probably regret ever doing it like i have seen others in the past ... I have a plastic pry tool so it cant damage anything and if you do decide on it make sure you get something similar.. Im OCD about my stuff though :)..

Well said! I agree, except about the temps :D considering my OC'd temps are lower than your stock hehe. It just depends on the notebook, both are great GPUs.

And I would surely recommend the JW over the JH anyday. It just packs more features for the same gaming performance and lower, out of the box, temps.

Is your notebook almost silent under full load though Ryzeki ? ;)..

Even at max fan speed the fans are just a whoosh of air and nothing like some other hairdryer machines .. If its that quiet then major props to MSI because i love a quiet machine...

Nah, it does not run quiet I guess. I find it on par with my previous G51J. Silent when working, and audible when on full load. When playing games it hardly matters because either i'm using my speakers or headphones and I can't hear the fans at all.

Additionally, where I live, the traffic sounds are way higher than my notebook so I honestly can't hear my fans :D but I can feel the vibration of the fan when going all out haha. Sometimes I can't even hear my own damm TV!

I like how the G73JW handles everything silently though.

Totally agree about the temps, i should have said jh there rather than 5870. Even though i got a lemon, I'd still recommend the msi gx660r over the jh...just not over the jw :p

Mine came with 'Blu-ray Disc Suite' from Xotic. I got the hybrid 500gb for the first drive so not sure if ASUS or Xotic put it on there.
