applying thermal paste makes big difference in gpu temp, for info I use gelid gc extreme for thermal paste. Before applying thermal paste gpu temp for playing any game with max setting :
    Tss0: 82C
    Tss1: 95C
    after applying thermal paste
    Tss0:75C
    Tss1:82C

    Hello,
    my temps are:

    idle
    Tss0: 50C
    Tss1: 55C

    1920x1080 games
    Tss0:87C
    Tss1:99C

    is this okay?

I have logged my GPU temps while playing TF2 and they can reach 100 degrees Celcius, outside it's pretty hot about 30 degrees celcius, the problem is at time the PC restarts to protect from damage and it gets annoying.

So I am successfully able to monitor my temps using the correct version of the AMD GPU Clock tool, but I was wondering why my Speedfan and other various apps like RivaTuner won't detect the temperatures of my gpu?

so it's weird that I get higher temps running L4D2 at max settings than running BFBC2 in Dx11... I hit 86C playing L4D2 at stock clocks but only 83C in BFBC2.

Also I really wish there was a way to configure the fans. I ran furmark the other day and the fans didn't kick in until the graphics card hit 95C stock, and at that point the temperature stabilized. When OCed @ 785/1300, the temps went up to 101C but still seemed stable.

holy guys....damn... today was insanely hot in canada. Temps even at 1AM in the morning currently are at 85F in the room. I was playing for the past 3-4h...first NFS shift maxed out with 4xAA for a 1h and then 2+h of GTA 4 maxed out with vsync on.... I was trying to check something I placed behind the computer and noticed the GPU side was freaking HOT....hotter than anytime in the 2-3 months i have had this computer.

I am currently a bit worried. Firstly....there was a big fan on the room justmoving the already hot ambient air and I didn't hear the gpu fan. Generally after hours of gaming my G73 in assassins creed etc only hit a max of 95C on memIO. Now...this is the max temp I have ever seen. Do u guys think I have done some damage here? ALso...is there a way to set an alarm when GPU temps kick up to 100C? Furthermore..is there a way to check if fans are turning on properly?

    thanks,

    V

You can either RMA it or take it apart and reapply the thermal paste yourself. Can't say which is safer, as I just got mine back from RMA for the same problem. Now my MemIO runs at 107C instead of 110 and the keyboard lights don't work anymore.

Yes RMA you might have same problem, like Yuxi said if you are willing to do the paste yourself you'll get much lover temperature:

Before RMA my MemIO would go up to 110C and thermal protection shuts down the computer. After RMA it goes up to 107, which is still unacceptable. They also replaced the keyboard and broke the backlight in the process. I'll probably end up redoing the paste myself. :(

The lights thing is just unacceptable man!, im very sorry

Maaan tried all sort of stuff. I'm really thinking about opening my laptop and cleaning the vents.
I may buy some Artic 5 as well.

One question: Does doing any or all of this break the warranty?
I wanna have the option to RMA it once im in Germany (just a month more)

The only thing with a void warranty sticker is the CPU on one of the screw posts so as long as you dont mess with that you will be fine.... Just make sure to take your time when pulling off the keyboard because it will feel like its glued on from the doublesided tape they use....

Just watch the video for taking apart the G73 .... BTO tech made it so you can just google them and its on there site...

I just took it apart and replaced the thermal pads with some MX-2 I have lying around. At idle the three sensors stay at around 59/65/62. After 5 minutes of Furmark, the MemIO topped out at 94C, with TSS0 at 82C and TSS2 at 88C. Quite an improvement from shutting down after 15 seconds :D

Also, when I opened it up I noticed they didn't even screw in two of the four screws on the GPU heatsink.

EDIT: I got the backlight working! Turns out they installed the ribbon cable upside down. Go figure.

Crap man i really want to do this!
I'd love to have an ASUS center just around the corner so i can get them to do it for me. Its not because i cant, but because my Family bought me my laptop as a gift, and it was quite expensive, and if i break it ill be in some serious trouble.
I mean, just the high temps and stuff, and they think it is my fault.

Well, if it works, don't "fix" it. If it doesn't, then you're not hurting it anymore by doing a paste-reapplication. If it is somewhere in between ... well ... if it isn't working RIGHT, I consider it not working at all.

What sensor showing this temperature? If it's memory controller it ok.(of course it depends on your ambient.) If it's core temperature, it is problem.

Hey there, had my g73-a1 since march now(courtesy of gentech!).

I live in the northwest coast, and ambient temps run anywhere from 20-27degrees in the house.

I play 2 mmos off and on - WoW and Champions online(got alot of other games I want to play too, but savin them for later in the year when I have more time!), and I feel the mem temps are too hot! They can climb upto 108degrees C often n the average is probably around 95degrees.

The vidcard and shader temps are usually around 80-85degrees and max out at 92-93.

Idle temps are 61-66 dependin on ambient. About 73-75 for the mem.

Do you guys feel these are too hot..? And I should mention I use amd gpu clock tool to get these figures.

I've heard if the card reaches 110 it will shut down and that hasn't happend yet, but 108d seems a bit scary to me.

Everything is stock, and nothing is overclocked, bios is factory default and I'm using the 10.3 mobility drivers, no GSODS or any issues yet(other than the creative bassboost lol which I had to uninstall)

Any insight would really be appreciated!

    Thanks =D

my GPU temp is 75 Celcius average on IDLE even if it's pretty cool outside, when gaming it reaches up to 105 degrees and when its hot it shutdowns (overheats)
when it's not hot outside it reaches about 95

I had the same problem until I opened up up the computer and reapplied the thermal paste myself. Before that, I tried the stock driver (9.12 I think), 10.3, and 10.6 and didn't notice any temperature differences.

RMAing may or may not fix your problem. I sent mine in and it came back a couple of degrees cooler but still reached 110C and shutdown easily.

If anyone's thinking of replacing the pads with thermal paste, this disassembly video by BTOtech is THE most helpful thing you'll find: :D

Thanks for the helpful reply, and video to boot.. Might just have to try that out.

What kind of thermal paste is recommended?

When I first ordered from gentech I asked Ken about it, and he said it would make a difference of maybe 2-4degrees. I thought it didn't sound like much so I didn't go with it, though now I think maybe I should have lol.

Thanks again for the insight, I really appreciate it!!

I just really love this thing, and want it to have a long and healthy life hehe.

Edit: Wow I just saw your response with the before/after temps Yuxi, the difference is amazing!!

Again, what thermal paste did you apply? That is an amazing difference, I'm glad it worked out so well for you!!

I used MX-2 because I had a tube of it already. Look into OCZ Freeze, IC Diamond, MX-3, Arctic Silver 5, etc.

AFAIK they all perform similarly well (way better than the pads), and there's very little difference between them (maybe a couple of degrees). I like the MX series because it's nonconductive so I don't have to worry if it spills over the sides. :D Not sure about the other ones.

Yeah it seems to be luck of the draw so far, everyone's temps seem to be all over the place, if you do go for it I hope you have better luck!

Yuxi's recommendation seems to be a good way to go, but I've never opened up a laptop before so I'm a bit scared to do it lol, desktops are no problem.

Thanks again Yuxi for all the info, it's really appreciated!!

Just got to see if I can work up the courage to do the operation myself.. lol

Does anyone know which thermal paste is the one to beat nowadays? And while being nonconductive like Yuxi mentioned, as I probably won't be precise enough as I'm an amateur when it comes to notebooks.

Again thanks for the comments so far, and any further insight will be appreciated!

here are my temps after playing an hour of BFBC2. Its kinda strange to see the MemIO be higher by about more than 10 from the Core. I thought it should differ by about 5-10C.

(switched to low power to decrease temp)

Is there anyway of applying the thermal paste without voiding the warranty? Even if you let an Asus Service Center do it for you?

But I'm sure they'll notice if the pads they installed were replaced by gooey paste.

Managed to repeat your bench with stock thermal paste. Benched for 10 min, but took photo after 6 min. Nothing changed after 10 min. Temps are the same as on photo.
