I might have a small problem. After setting the new higher refresh rate, I finished downloading a game on Origin. After it finished, I went back to the Start screen on Windows 8. It now appears that the Origin screen from when I was downloading is permanently burned into the screen. I am unsure if this will go away, but I have since reset the refresh rate back to the specified 60 Hz. Anyone have any ideas on why this happened or if it will go away?

Wait a second, so the G751JY doesn't have optimus?
-
-
Could be a deal breaker for me as I might take this to school sometimes. Have you checked the bios to see if there is any hidden information regarding Optimus?
-
Now I've got this problem and I will absolutely be returning if I can't find a solution:
Autobrightness based on lightness of items on-screen - Page 2
Its driving me insane. -
I did check the BIOS and nothing
Honestly, I really wish I had known this as I think it is a deal breaker for me too...
Going to play some more tonight and unless I can find a solution to either Optimus or the autobrightness problem, I'll setup the RMA tomorrow.

...but my country kinda sucks balls, so I don't really know -

Apologies for double post underneath - recieved a kill page request on this old aspire 8943G, didn't think this post went through. -
"Hi,
Dear ********* these models are not available in the Portuguese market, we think that its only in UK?
And we cant ship material outside Portugal at the moment.
Surely we would like to receive that money!
Best regards,
"
First of all one of the best replies yet - I told them "I'm trying to throw my money at someone hopefully it's you"
It's a generic line in my G751 emails to everyone.
Everyone misses the line about " I will fly to you" So I'm still waiting for the second reply as to stock dates and price!
Your country doesn't suck by the way! =) -
We can always ship from another country, preferably inside the EU so that we avoid the ridiculously long and expensive customs processing.
-
So who's tempted to just pick one up from France and grab an external keyboard to sort the AZERTY issue? I mean sure portability is an issue but I'm at the wall most of the time, somewhere.

This is a new laptop and problems take time to solve. Once you work out the auto-brightness problem, maybe a few tests on battery will work well enough for you to keep the G750JY - it seems like a great laptop
There was a problem with people that did a Microsoft install of Windows, they couldn't get rid of the auto-contrast / brightness, did you reload the OS from scratch?
You should know there are people that still haven't gotten it working right on their G750, but fortunately I have. I can list the things I did, the 2 main ones are:
Uninstall Power4Gear. It puts in it's own Power Plans over yours when you unplug and plug back in - switching from AC to battery triggers Power4Gear to put in it's own Power Plans. You can tune it's Power Plans too, but for some reason they revert back to their own settings later.
You can verify this by looking at the settings before after removing power and re-connecting power. PC Settings in Windows 8.1 GUI => PC and Devices => Power and Sleep --> Adjust my display brightness automatically will be there if enabled, and won't be there if it isn't. I don't see that option, as I set it in my Power Plan Advanced Features.
Set the Display settings as you did, but also take the precaution of setting the Display Brightness at the same value for all settings - that way if it switches it won't be perceptible
My AUO screen is very bright, and I can only use it at 100% outdoors. 80% seems to be the best for indoor use.
There is also an Nvidia setting that can get enabled for Dynamic Contrast Enhancement, disable it, or do as I do and don't use the Nvidia settings - I only enabled it briefly to show the option, it is for video only, but some complained about it:
There are lots of links for help, this one is nicely detailed:
Adaptive Brightness - Turn On or Off in Windows 8
Good thing you don't have Optimus, then you would also need to do the Intel settings
Please let us know if this fixes it, otherwise if those aren't enough, we can still try other things.
Rebooting, maybe even powering off, in between helps too. -
This is the factory install so far; won't reinstall until I decide to keep
There is no Power4Gear in the Add/Remove Programs. I did try that setting in nvidia too. No difference. I set brightness to max in all plans and all settings, no luck.
Already disabled adaptive brightness in power settings.
Honestly, I would actually probably call it dynamic contrast. The contrast gets crazy when the screen is dark on battery and then goes back to normal with a light colored screen.

Which Power Plan are you using for AC and for Battery? I use Balanced for both, but you could have Battery Saver power plan enabled when on Power, so you need to set the Advanced settings for that Power Plan as well. Might as well set all of the Power Plans to the same settings...for testing.
Can you please post the Asus installed apps from Programs and Features? They may be different. Is there an Intel Display related install, anything from Intel?
Here is what I have uninstalled: P4G, Splendid, Asus Live, Asus Vibe, Asus DVD (I have Cyberlink PowerDVD Ultimate 14), Gaming Mouse, Cyberlink 2 Go.
Here is what I have left installed for the OS from the original Asus Build OS:
I have some upgrades for drivers ready to install, so those aren't absolutely the newest.
What does your G751 have left installed, and what did you remove?
Did you try setting the brightness manually with Fn+F6 *before* and *after* auto-brightness dims it?
I have heard of dual settings for the Fn+F6/F5 setting based on auto brightness - it has been a while since I fixed it for myself. You could also try setting the brightness via the slider for the Active Power Plan after auto-brightness takes effect. -
So you did solve the problem with the "dynamic contrast" by disabling it right?
No Optimus is weird as it has in the ads.
And you had problem after setting to 100hz.
What a mess! But im not surprise as new systems always have some problems, solutions should be up soon. -
Asus Game Center
Asus Live Update
Asus ROG Gaming Mouse
Asus ROG MacroKey
Asus Screen Saver
Asus Splendid
Asus USB Charger
ATK
Thats it.
I am fairly certain its not actually brightness, but more some sort of dynamic contrast. The brightness level does not actually go down. If I set it to 100% and switch a dark screen, the contrast drops but brightness actually stays 100%.
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Splendid. I did update to the newest nvidia at the insistence of GeForce Experience.

When a problem exists it doesn't matter how experienced someone is, you still have to cover every option in case they missed something, sometimes just running through the obvious is enough to trigger an aha moment which leads to a solution.
I also assumed you were a fallible human like me
What are you looking at when the display contrast changes? Video, desktop, or?
Photo's of the before / after auto contrast might help too. I have an idea of what you are saying, but a photo might clear things up in my view.
When I have up the browser, desktop, and a video - partial or full screen and I remove the power cable nothing happens. The brightness / contrast stays the same.
Does what you see happen immediately or after a short delay, how long?
You could try using the Nvidia video settings and enable auto-contrast, and then disable it. I also did that while debugging the problem when I had it.
There was a person that backed up to an old Nvidia driver, and the auto-contrast problem went away. I doubt you will be able to do that on a 980m, but just thought I would mention it.
You could post to the Asus 344.16 support area about your problem, there doesn't seem to be a 344.24 forum thread yet,, stating all the obvious we have tried, and ask for a response from Nvidia as to what it might be.
Official NVIDIA 344.16 WHQL Display Driver for GeForce GTX 980 and 970 GPUs Feedback Thread (9/23/14)
https://forums.geforce.com/default/...gtx-980-and-970-gpus-feedback-thread-9-23-14/
There might be a better thread to post to...keep checking for the 344.24 driver feedback thread, it should be coming up soon.

And you can respond here too:

Although Splendid doesn't affect this problem, it skews the ICC profile it installs based on it's rough settings/options.
Uninstalling Splendid and then just installing it's ICC profile works well, that is what I do. There are a few postings on ROG Forums I have made detailing it. The unpacked Splendid is in C:\eSupport.
I know there is a solution for this, as I have fixed it for myself and others. There are just a few more moving parts these days than there used to beDemike, ZerockX and Eleftherios like this. -
hmscott, do you work for Asus or you're just a great person?
-
-
hmscott, your registry settings in the Asus forums solved my problem:
Auto contrast is driving me nuts!! - Page 11
I deleted the AdaptiveBrightness keys from my registry; imported yours; rebooted and the problem is gone!
Thanks a bunch!
Now, my next issue is probably a hardware problemI've noticed that my end key only registers as a keypress about 75% of the time. I have a sinking feeling the key itself it breaking....
But at least no more annoying dimming for the moment.

Would you please also post something in that thread to update it to the top so others can benefit from it?
Yours is the first G751 auto-contrast fixed, and there are likely to be others.
This is the direct link to my post with the .reg.zip files:

And, please update your original thread on the G751 forum so they know what the solution was.
G751JY Does Not Have Optimus
http://rog.asus.com/forum/showthrea...t-Have-Optimus&p=443842&viewfull=1#post443842
Laptop Keyboards are always a pain for me, I used to replace them all the time, then I moved to an external keyboard once while waiting for a replacement, and now 99% of the time I am using an external keyboard/mouse/trackpad.
At home I have Razor keyboard/mouse, and for taking on the road, I use the Logitech K400r, light and wireless, I even use it at home when I am in another room and not at my desk. Cheap, and it fits in my laptop backpack.
http://www.logitech.com/product/wireless-touch-keyboard-k400r
I haven't tried the new G751 keyboard, but looking at the keys, they might need time to smooth out catches in the travel. Try hitting it from the same angle - straight on - a number of times in a row, and see if that helps improve the hit rate. -
-
Which laptop you recommed me the asus g751 4gb vram or msi gt72 8gb vram i7 4710/i7 4980?
-
The Asus will be quieter, cooler running, and the CPU doesn't matter all that much - check out Intel XTU to unlock multi's - I haven't tried the 4710 or the 4980, but the 4700 can be tuned for 3.6ghz.
The Asus screen is currently better with IPS, but I hear the MSI will come with an IPS soon enough.
The GT72 is pretty cool, probably too noisy for me, and I don't need the keyboard lights. But the extra VRAM, at 8GB has a longer future for a few upcoming games - it may or may not matter for most games.
The GT72 has switchable Optimus, only requiring a reboot to switch from Optimus battery mode and back to on AC direct Nvidia GPU. But, for me the Asus G751 with no Optimus at all is the best idea.
Whatever you get, there will be something better eventually, but either one of these are going to serve someone well for as long as they want to keep it.
I am sticking with my G750JH for now.
Both those laptops look great, tough to choose until I play with both. I suggest you do the same -
-
When you use XTU to set the Core multi's in the 4700 to 36x/35x/34x/34x and the CPU cache to 36x, the top speed of 3.6ghz only shows up in single threaded tasks, and on down the line to 34x. But, 3.4ghz at 100% CPU is better than 3.2ghz. This should work for the MSI too.
Nyceis has a G751 and he verified there is no Optimus, and the battery isn't replaceable... weird, right?
It sounds like you are leaning towards the high end MSI, go for it, and please come back and give us a report! -
Idk i maybe go with the cheap versión gt72 980m with 4710 turbo boost 3.6? Because idk if worth the money pay 1000$ more for ips panel, i7 4980 and 4 msata m2 128gb
-
It would be nice to get the 8GB 980m and the top end CPU, as you can't really change those over time.
And, then change the M.2 options to something you can use now, like 2x 256GB or 512GB, and leave off the other 2 M.2's for later.
But, that config is easily worth it - and 4 x 128GB is gonna be like 1500+ Read/sec - pretty sweet -
-
Does anyone have any information regarding to uk release date of the G751JY? I am waiting as (im)patiently as I can but the web seems to have gone silent with the vague 1-2 months being the most accurate timescale ot there.
-
Does anybody have experience with Asus Global service?
Because I'm gonna get my laptop from another country, but in case somethings wrong or I want a checkup I dont wanna send it back to that country. -
Update: the image that looked like it burned into the screen on my g751 is now completely gone. I think I am going to stick with the 60 Hz setting until I hear others have had no issues running theirs at 100 Hz.
Someone posted earlier that they would like to see a hwmonitor screen shot. This is a pic of my g751 after gaming for about 3 hours straight during Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, maxed out at 1920x1080.
praetorianx and Kaozm like this. -
Thank you! i'm gonna do a repaste on this if i get t.

I was planning on getting the same model as SoulMisaki, with the 970m and just a 1TB 7200rpm HDD but I have a question:
Just like SoulMisaki, I plan on getting a SSD (Samsung) later but i'm worried about the OS. Since it doesn't come with an SSD the OS will be installed in the HDD, so how do I later transfer the already installed OS into the new SSD? I don't have a Windows 8.1 DVD, so how do I do it?
Would greatly appreciate an answer -
Lol not really, just lying on the bed and watch these guys running around to fix their machines - as a prepararion for my coming one xD -
There are guides on different ways of doing this online - but this is the way I'm going with because a friend already has a transfer cable I can borrow. -
There is an available slot for SSD so i don't think you need a cable, just put the SSD in the slot.
-
But yes, if there's another bay, you can always just use that to do the transfer. -
Also it seems like the G750 with a gtx 880m can handle the CPU temps cooler as shown in this video, around 61-64 C.
Battlefield 4 MP - Asus G750JZ - GTX880m - YouTube
This is another video with the MSI GT72 where the CPU temps are hovering around 67-70 degrees.
MSI GT72 GTX 880M Battlefield 4 Temperature Test - YouTube
I'm not comparing the GPU temps as we know Maxwell cards run cooler.
Of course, these are different comparison scenarios, but it kinda gives us an idea of how these temps are going to stay in the future.
I'd like to hear your thoughts about these temps as I plan to get the Asus G751JT with 970m or maybe go towards the MSI GT72 with 970m and 6gb VRAM. -
-
Can someone confirm that the SSD slot in a 2.5"?
