Personally, I'm really liking the screen. The black levels seem better than my Dell U2410. There is a tiny bit of bleed but this is my first laptop in ages so I'm probably not the best judge. It's not bothering me though. If it helps, I had a lighting mod installed in Skyrim, but removed it because it was way to dark in dungeons.

Has anyone had any nic issues? I'm getting higher download speeds via wifi. Maybe just a driver update?

And on that note, any "must" updates? Sounds driver etc...

Everything running silky smooth otherwise. This thing is heavy though!

GPU drivers are always a must :) At least if you want to play current games mostly bug free. Sometimes they also introduce new bugs though ;)

Sorry to hear you guys are having such trouble with getting the models you want. I agree that Asus model policy is horrible, for instance here in India they don't ship IPS version of G551 yet all shopping sites convince you that it *is* IPS... yet it's not. I don't understand why you are worried about WLAN card though, it's quite cheap and simple to change - first thing I've done with my N550JK was to swap the lame stock Atheros to Intel Wireless-AC 7260. With G series, disassembly is more complex (took apart friend's G750 once... sheesh, really? Screen removal just to clean fans?) but it's still possible and should not void warranty (AFAIK). Sucks about the M.2 SSDs missing though. Wish they would be more clear and have a full configurations list somewhere online to look up. Instead they rely on the fact that the customer reads somewhere that it has IPS screen and M.2 SSD, orders and settles on whatever model they get instead, IPS/SSD or not...

NVIDIA Optimus (AMD analog is called Enduro) is GPU-switching tech that allows the laptop to turn off dedicated graphics when it's not needed in order to conserve power. Asus refused to use it in their G-series until G750's with 8xx series nVIDIA cards. It seriously extends battery life. The only disadvantage is that it does not allow multiple 3D screens connected because of how it's build: dedicated GPU draws frames and sends them to IGP which has direct control of video outputs. So to enable such features, Optimus has to be removed, like in MSI GT72. However, Asus laptops never had such a feature to start with so it was just an annoying miss until they finally introduced Optimus - hopefully they won't leave it out again in any new models.

And you are right. Out with TN panels, these bashers should be grateful they'll be getting a better model available for purchase soon instead of blaming you...

BTW: whoever complained about black level being better on TN panels than on IPS, this is not a universal rule. My IPS panel (N550JK) has 0.21 cd/m2, some others have 0.4-0.6, some TN have 0.2, some 0.6... It just really depends on the model. Look at the reviews of the specific model you want and see the exact measurements.

Actually, according to Notebookcheck's preliminary test of Asus NX500JK, that is exactly that was done on it - no TB at all. So I'd watch out. Surprising, since NX500JK uses slightly modified chassis of N550 series, which definitely have Turbo, perhaps it's a messup that they will fix via a BIOS update but still. EDIT: according to the full review, TB is not disabled, it's the bad cooling policy (silent fans) that is preventing TB from being used for more than a split second.

Very different beasts. GT72 is meant as a true desktop replacement, its advantages are multiple video outputs (for multiple screens) and 4 analogue jacks along with a lot of other less important bling (RGB KB backlight etc). G751 is a simpler machine yet just as powerful in the CPU/graphics department and costing less. As for video memory, 8 is insane. By the time games start using that much, the graphics chip in 980M won't handle such games anyhow. Even 4 should be enough for any current game. More than that is really just marketing. Or did you by chance make a typo and you meant DDR3, the RAM? In that case 8 GB is still enough unless you are running virtual machines or doing other RAM-intensive tasks. For games 8 should still be fine.

Can anyone suggest a good laptop pad for this beast? Everything I've seen is very thick and cumbersome. Just need something for short sessions on my lap.

Update: Everyone please note that cykelman's hwinfo results are from monitoring for 13 hours 31 minutes, and we don't know what caused the temperature to peak on 1 core at 91c... it might have been outside Skyrim - cykelman only played for 3-4 hours.

cykelman, now you can turn on hwinfo logging, the icon on the bottom row with the green plus sign. Then next time you game with logging on you can look at the csv file afterwards and see how long the peak temps were reached.

Right now you only know that at one point in 3-4 hours the temp got to 91c on 1 core, it might have been a brief peak or it might have been a long sustained peak, right now you don't know.

Also, the most important lines on that list aren't shown, Thermal Throttling. I doubt it said anything but No, but if you have a Yes then you have an issue - logging that would let you know if the CPU repeatedly went into Thermal Throttling, or if it was only a single time.

Are you playing in an area where the laptop can breath freely? Air can freely get into the vents underneath, and exhaust into free space where the heat can dissipate instead of coming back under the laptop to get sucked up still warm into the cooling system?

GPU temps are very cool - indicating the games could be more CPU intensive than most, which would skew the CPU temps up. Skyrim can do that.

Just How CPU-Melting Is Skyrim Played At MAX Settings? | Kotaku Australia

    "Scaling and Performance
Skyrim is said to be a heavily CPU-dependent game and, as you are about to discover, this is true. We hear the game offloads shadow rendering to the CPU and as a result, ultra quality shadows really hammer the processor.

The game appears to only be optimised for quad-core processors, as just four threads of the Core i7-2600K were active when playing. However, of those four threads, only one reached between 90–100 per cent while the other three worked at around 30–50 per cent. This means a decent dual-core processor should have no trouble playing Skyrim."

So, as in your temp results, 1 core can get hot. You could try reducing the shadow quality to reduce the CPU load, and the temperature - lots of articles and notions about what is CPU/GPU intensive in Skyrim

    All that for this:

Those temps don't look bad. :)

Update: Please see follow on post suggesting using a benchmark/stress test to get a repeatable test that can be used to see the effect of tuning changes on the results, and so you have numbers that can be compared to other user results on the same and different laptops.

Don't look bad? I thought with that giant vents you should be well below 90 with ALL kind of games. If not then what is the different between a slim GS70 and this?

It's been a sad time to me seeing all the good comments about this laptop and discussions in what game each one of you would like to play while my g751 sits on the asus repair facility for 3 weeks now and counting. I only had it for 5 days. If I knew it would take that long I probably wouldn't send it. Everything was performing great except for some cosmetic issues that I'm sure now I could live with :(. Oh well, I will keep you guys posted of my situation.

About 23-24 degrees. Did a relatively short log of 45 min of skyrim, this time the cpu peaked at 86c: skyrimlog.CSV - Speedy Share - upload your files here

cykelman, thanks for doing that. I updated my first response after I noted that your hwinfo monitoring was for 13 hours and 31 minutes, and your game run was for only 3-4 hours of that time, so we really didn't know if 91c was a peak reading for the game, or something else run during the hwinfo monitoring.

Reading the new csv file, which btw had no comma's (how did you do that?), shows an average temperature of 71.35c and scrolling through the whole CPU Max temperatures, the peak of 86c was reached 1 time, with a couple of 85's, and the rest of the peaks were in the 70-80c range with few break outs into low 80's.

    View attachment skyrimlog-fixed.zip

The takeaway from this is you need to look at all the samples to see the temperature range, not just the rare peak temp.

There is nothing wrong with your CPU/GPU temps :)

Thank you for your help, i appreciate it. You see, i am kind of an anxious person, especially when it comes to things like this laptop which has a high price tag attached :p I didn't know about the log function of HWiNFO, which was exectly what i was looking for, a way to make sure the temps are spikes and that the cpu isn't constantly running at those temps. Anyways, thanks.

Does anyone knows if the G751 supports analog 5.1 output via the 3 existing jack plugs?
I have an Roccat Kave Headset with 4 X 3.5mm jack plugs (one is for microphone) that i would like to connect. (The mic is not necessary, only the 5.1 analog output).

    Thanks in advance

cykelman, np, now you have the tools to see the CPU/GPU temps at a reasonable sampling rate (you can change that too in the hwinfo settings), and therefore can assure yourself any time you like :)

If you run the prime95/valley/furmark tests every so often - monthly, you can see the effect of time and ambient temperature on the readings. Now you have base numbers to go back to for comparison.

Just so you know, modern thermal paste, as used in the Asus ROG laptops will last for many years. It isn't even worth worrying about for 3-5 years... and even so I haven't had to re-paste an original laptop paste job in any of my ROG laptops, ever. It is that rare.

You can enjoy many years of gaming :)

Well, fun while it lasted. Looks like I have to send this thing back....woke up this morning and went to power it on and got nothing. Plugged in AC adapter, it fired up, but says no battery detected, lovely.

Update: it's back, but any suggestions on how to avoid this? Is it ok to leave laptop plugged into AC adapter a the time?

Hmm, then i may overrated the Rog cooling the whole time. I was in a dream that it manages to cool em all.

@hmscott Do you know if we can increase the fan's max speed?

The target of the ROG isn't really to be extremely cool, but to be extremely silent. This means that they allow a bit higher temps (which don't hurt the cpu/gpu) for more silent fan speeds. Troublesome is it only if they start to throttle, in that case something must be done, like re-pasting or replacing the fans.

    [edit]
This is my personal opinion of the whole ROG laptop thingy.

Since i'll use my G751 like a dektop, always hooked up and with external monitor and speakers plugged in, i'll probably get a cooling base for it to assure the lowest temps possible.

Hi everyone, I am looking forward to buy this laptop as soon as possible, however the only thing that I dislike is the red lighted keyboard, what a shame they didn´t keep the white lighted keyboard of the g750... If they could only release a g750 with an IPS screen... but I don´t think they will.
Does anybody know if the red lighting is configurable? I mean, you can change the red color to any other color?

    Thanks in advance!

So reading comment a few pages back it seems then Resellers dont offer a 2/3 year global warranty, can anyone tell me which retailers could you get the global warranty from?

Also in terms of the wireless card in the laptops I have read mostly bad things about it. But can anyone tell me what speed they get with this card where they have over a 100mb connection? What card is the best to replace the intel one?

    JT models has ( 2 X SATA 3 slots )
JY models has ( 2 X SATA 3 slots + 1 X m.2 slot ) but you can't use the three slots at the same time only can use 2 of them

You could import it depending on local taxes.

Bah I managed to scratch the back of mine while moving it (the metal part by the logo). So now I can't return it.

Guess operation "Replace Wifi" is a go then.
Bought an Atheros QCNFA222 card off ebay for $14. It's the same card as Killer 1202, only m.2 instead of PCIe.
Now I just have to find a guide so I don't damage anything while getting to that stupid placed card slot.

I got my JT a couple of hours ago, so far, so good. No keyboard issues, sound is coming from all 3 speakers, but I hear the sub the loudest, it's a bit tinny. Furmark had the gpu fluctuating between 68-69C, I ran it for 20mins. Unigen Heaven at default settings pushed my cpu to 74C, but I'm downloading Crysis 3 so I can get some real max temps.

The screen looks gorgeous to me, I'm not having any wifi issues, and I am now officially allowing myself to get excited. The only thing that could ruin it for me now would be the cpu throttling. I'll find out soon enough.

Nice, those temp are perfect. Can you check if yours has an M.2 slot? If you dont know exactly where it is, just open the bottom panel, take a picture on the left zone and we can see it for ourself. Thanks!

Crysis 3 defaulted to highest settings, except texture resolution, which was on high. The cpu went to 85c, but it took me running around out in the tall grass for that to happen. Indoors it stayed at 75c. My house is not very warm right now, so I'm sure that played a factor in everything.

Here is the picture you wanted, I tried to take that empty bracket cover off, but it uses a really stupid size phillips head, and I don't have one where I'm at.
