From what I've seen so far on this forum, and from some of the videos I've seen, I think the MSI GT72 Dominator pro is on par with the G751.

I've never been the biggest fan of the MSI keyboards and style. (or lack thereof!)

I've had some bad luck with MSI which made me go back to Asus. I like the design of the Rog 751, so I think i'm gonna buy it. Any idea when they are gonna be availible in Canada?

Asus Finland on fb: 970 from 1499€ and 980 from 1699€. They also mentioned that no G751JM (860M) models has been stocked in the Nordic region at this time. Sad, guess I have to eat tinned food slightly longer.

    Hi,
I read that MSI gaming laptops are coming with Nvidia 980m, 8 GB. Here it is . So far as I know, ASUS is offering 980m with 4 GB max. Does anybody know about ASUS model with 8 GB 980m GPU.
Secondly, does it make much of a difference while playing games (i mean 4gb/8gb GPU) ? thank U.

No, unless you use multiple HD screens.

At the moment Asus only provides (according to their press release):
    NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 980M with 4GB GDDR5 VRAM (for G751JY)
    NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 970M with 3GB GDDR5 VRAM (for G751JT)
    NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 860M with 2GB GDDR5 VRAM (for G751JM)

"17.3-inch anti-glare Full HD (1920 x 1080) IPS with LED backlight" On the press release from ASUS.

I actually have a question for you guys, I plan to go with the JT-CH71 since it saves $400 compared to the JT-DH72. I can use that money to get a 512GB SSD for $200, and pocket the savings....

But before I do, I just need confirmation now that it can support two 2.5" hard drives. Asus says "Dual HDD Support (Optional)" on the press release, but does that mean it has space for two 2.5" HDD/SSDs like the 750 had, or does it mean 1x mSATA and 1x HDD?

If i remember correctly, it uses m.2 interface for the SSD (2 PCIe port)

Does that mean it's impossible for me to make the following setup then?

    ASUS ROG G751JT-CH71
    • i7-4710HQ (2.5Ghz)
    • Nvidia 970M Video Card
[*]512GB 2.5" SSD For Operating System (Aftermarket Purchase)
[*]1TB (7200rpm) HDD For Data + Storage (Comes with CH71)
    • 16GB 1600Mhz RAM

Have they completely removed the second hard drive bay in the transition to G751 from the G750? Why would they do that?

Actually in reverse, the new one is even better due to more flexible, basicly yes your setup is ok. Just notice that you have to look for SSDs that use PCIe interface - the newest standard.

Thing is, it's twice as expensive to get a PCIe SSD card than a regular 2.5" SATA SSD.

The SSD I am looking at is this one. It uses SATA, and is .43$ per GB. If I can at all avoid it, I do NOT want to pay more (.96$ per GB) for a smaller (120GB) PCIe card, when I can get almost 5 times that space for less.

Judging by the press release from ASUS, the G751 accepts the following storage options:
    • NGFF PCIe 512GB/256GB SSD (for G751JY only)
    • 2.5in SATA 2TB(5400 rpm)
    • 2.5in SATA 1TB(7200 rpm)
    • 2.5in SATA 1TB (5400 rpm, w/8GB SSD, SSH)
      [*]2.5in SATA 256GB/128GB SSD
    • Dual HDD Support
Does this mean I can use my planned SATA SSD inside this machine alongside a single other SATA HDD? (No PCIe, no mSATA, nothing else. Just those two drives.)

Seeing that the machine has SATA HDDs and Dual HDD support, I should - by extension - be able to replace the original SATA HDD with the SATA SSD for boot & OS, and use the original SATA HDD for Data in the second 2.5" HDD slot - correct?

    No expensive PCIe cards?
Am I limited to 128/256GB SATA SSDs as in the Press Release? Or is that just them not mentioning the sizes they don't offer?

That's all I want to know.

I placed it at XOTIC PC however they just called me today and said it won't be in stock for a couple weeks. Yes yes, I know I could have waited but I didn't wanna go a couple weeks without a computer. So I exchanged it with the MSI GS70 since it was in stock.

I figured since I had the G750JS I should try something new.

Could you tell if it has a "slim" profile or a "gamer" one? And please posts some pics if you can, I am really dying to see how the "gamer" model looks in real life.

Hey, could both of you help me out by quickly checking something?

I just need confirmation now that it can support two 2.5" hard drives. Asus says "Dual HDD Support (Optional)" on the press release, but does that mean it has space for two 2.5" SATA HDD/SSDs like the 750 had, or does it mean 1x mSATA and 1x HDD? I'm planning to buy the CH71 and get my own 512GB SSD to use for the OS alongside its 1TB Hard Drive.

Does the system have two hard drive bays like the 750 did?

Thank you very much for checking that - now I just need to wait for them to actually OFFER the CH71, and I'll be set to pick it up.

If you could do a video overview of the system, or even just a really detailed review - I'm sure we'd all appreciate it!

What sort of Samsung ssd is that? Is it the one where you get two 128gb in Raid in a single 2.5" housing

    G751JY-Bottom.jpg

Yes it can support two 2.5" drives, the connector is at the M.2 SSD slot, all you have to do is remove the M.2 drive with caddy and you can install another 2.5" drives.

    Also the battery is internal.

I actually plan on doing both. An aftermarket Crucial MX100 512GB SATA SSD for my Operating System & Boot, the 1TB HDD that comes with the system for Data & Storage, and a hard drive caddy to hold the 750GB HDD that I already have.

So, GenTechPC, assuming I get the CH71, I'll just have to copy over the 1TB Boot Drive to the SSD, and replace it, correct? (Since there shouldn't be any M.2 SSD or Caddy in that version)

I hope that Asus doesnt throw a curveball here with the CH71, since it's not out yet. (Something like only having a single hard drive slot on that version...) Should I wait and see before buying the Crucial MX100 512GB SATA SSD?

They are unlikely to change it mid series. With no ssd installed as standard they would likely just include a second caddy for a 2.5" drive. You could of course get your reseller to check before shipping.

That would be the easiest thing to do, it seems.

Thing is, Asus seems intent on delaying the launch of the CH71 until November 4th, according to Newegg.com; but the SSD I want is on sale now until the 15th. Should I buy the SSD now and wait for the CH71 to release, or would it be safer to wait and buy at full price?

Not sure what the sale price for Crucial, but in tests, 850's show better results. Oh, and the price will definitely go down in the coming months.

Er... I would definitely like better results if possible, but the Samsung's a full $200 more for the same size. I doubt the difference is that high.

I'll likely wait for release since I can price match NCIX.ca with Amazon.ca's price anyway. $219 for 512GB SSD.

I find zero information about this IPS display LGD046C. Must truly be new
Edit: Found a review of the display. Its also featured on the G771. The display is a matte IPS apparently
    http://www.ultrabookreview.com/5255-asus-g771-review/

Also several sites claim the M2 slot is hooked up to PCIe port. So I reckon Asus have a third party controller since the motherboard still got HM87 which do not have support from Intel with PCIe?

Is it still problematic like I've read about the earlier version of it being or is this a newer version? I had seen people complaining about it not switching or having issues with the original Optimus laptops and I'm not sure if this is a newer version of the software(?) that controls switching the graphics.

I'm trying to decide between a G751 and an MSI GT72 and the ability to switch on the MSI had my attention originally but if there aren't issues with Optimus anymore (or if they were overrated) then I'll go back to Asus since I've had a flawless experience with my G74.

From looking at the Newegg listings and images, it seems that we were partially correct with our previous assumptions; though some things have changed.

    We now know that:
    • GAMING variants include red double vents at the rear, and are slightly thicker to increase cooling for the 970 & 980M graphics cards..
    • SLIM variants sport all-black rear vents, and are thinner due to the less demanding 860 & 960M graphics cards.
I've listed the updated variants below. (Updated portions are underlined)

I've just added the new JM, but unfortunately - there seems to be limited information on its release and such, so much of its data could not be filled in.

I'll personally be getting the ASUS ROG G751JT-CH71, and upgrading some parts myself. How about you guys?

Notebooks & Ultrabooks - Gaming - ASUS <<< According to this, the JY and JT variants are the same 20-53 mm (2") thickness with 5.3 kg (10.5 lbs) weight. (Kinda odd due to the lower Maxwell TDP tho.)

The JM is actually 20-43 mm (1.65") thick with 4.3 kg (9.5 lbs) weight, but also gets a touch-screen option? (I want the JY with touch-screen!) :D

    So, V

    G750JY = 0.8-2.0", 10.5 pounds, mSATA SSD, i7 4710HQ-i7 4860HQ, GTX 980M, 230w adapter, copper heat-sinks, red quad vents.

    G750JT = 0.8-2.0", 10.5 pounds, mSATA SSD, i7 4710HQ, GTX970M, 230w adapter, copper heat-sinks, red quad vents.

    G750JM = 0.8-1.65", 9.5 pounds, no mSATA SSD, i5 4200H-i7 4710HQ, GTX860M-GTX960M, 180w adapter, touch-screen option, black dual vents.

All with a beefy not remove-able 6000mah battery!

Odd.. I've never heard of the JM until now.. Though it makes sense than the 970M and 980M are grouped together in terms of 'cooling architecture' - I didn't think they'd be too different when it came to temperatures.

Though it's odd that its the only model with a touch screen.. Maybe the manual on the JM page is simply a G751 General Manual? It does state that the image used to represent the touchscreen in the manual may look different from the user's "depending on the model," so that's odd. The JM also seems to be the only G751 on that page that has a manual up. Makes me think that it's indeed a general manual.

Regardless, thank you for the information - I'll add it to the above post.

Asus does not list the GTX960M as an option for JM, but it will 100% be there when it launches later this year! ;)

I'm just hoping they add touch-screen support for all models later! :D

I'm getting the G751JT-CH71 as well. I already have a 512 SSD in my current G73 and will be moving it over to the new laptop. RAM is enough so the hard drive is the only change.
