I also expect ASUS to re-evaluate specs based on consumer demand.
Expect very limited quantities of all the above units

same here but I will take MSI or Clevo this time over Asus
-
So preordering starts when ? Anybody knows?
-
Interesting.... might be nothing, as new arch, but again two versions of GTX660M, could it be 192bit and 128bit again???
-
I think it's 128 only

Yeah that 3GB 660M looks like a 192 bit. Nice spotted Abula
-
Those prices, Ouch. I hope they fixed the massive design flaws in the G55.
Edit: What does BD/BDB/SM/B&M mean?
Edit 2: http://www.macmall.com/p/ASUS-Notebook-Computers/product~dpno~9083362~pdp.hcdhbch Found this. -

BD is blu ray, BDB blu ray burner, B&M could mean maybe "backpack and mouse". SM, not sure.
edit: SuperMulti
-
I think B&M is brick and mortar, ie. a physical shop and not a webshop.
Edit:
ALLurGroceries's suggestion might make more sense now that I think about it. -
Herp, I feel dumb now. $1349 is still a lot for a 660m machine, even with their backpack/mouse. I wonder if they're changing up the bundled mouse/bag? What was the mouse in the G74?
-
$1349 Is is only slightly more than what I paid for my G53JW a little over a year ago, so I'm happy with the price.
Also, whatever "SM" is, its only on the G55. -
When I bought my G53SW it was $1k, but I bought the XN1 model. I'm thinking SM somehow translates to a DVD drive.
-
ALLurGroceries Vegan Vermin Super Moderator
Yeah SM must mean something like that, since it replaces BD/BDB on the G55VW. SuperMulti I guess...
I think the mouse on the G74SX was some kind of logitech, but a quick search got me nowhere for a model. :-/
I also thought brick&mortar at first and then 'backpack and mouse' came to mind.
-
The mouse that came with th G74 is a rebrand of the HP with voodoo DNA mouse or at least it was when the G74 was launched.
-
Does anyone actually use it? I have an orochi a deathadder, a standard dell mouse, and a sidewinder x8, wouldn't mind having a decent wired mouse to take around.
-
I've used mine extensively for one year. I still carry it as my backup mouse in the backpack and use it when i'm not in the office where i got a mionix naos. The ROG mouse is one of the few mice i can palm completely which is a very nice bonus.
-
The only mouse I can palm completely is my massive Sidewinder x8, the Deathadder isn't wide enough for me to palm but I like it's design too much to give it up.
-
The mouse that came with my G53JW is a Razer Abyssus. Has no thumb buttons, so I never used it.
-
If they included an Imperator I'd be all over that. Anyone know if the G55VW has a second hard drive slot? Judging by the manual it looks like it no longer has one.
-
+1. That would suck. If that's the case, they should get rid of the optical drive and use the extra space for a second HDD bay and for more copper or larger fans.
They should get rid of the op drive anyway. Takes up too much space.
Will edit this post if I find out about the HDD bay...
EDIT: From the youtube video on the 1st page of this thread, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4O2Bzw_JNIY, the display shows dual hard drive support. -
I mean it's not a huge deal as I can just get a caddy for the optical drive, but I don't understand why they removed it, but it looks much easier to work on now unlike the old models, I guess it's an understandable sacrifice.
Edit for the above edit: Look at Page 66 in the G55's manual, that's what makes me concerned. -
Will it be possible to upgrade GPU's on these models at a later time? Or is it only the normal stuff like RAM that can be upgraded/changed?
-
Will have to wait and see when someone can pop it open
. My money is on solderd GPU for some reason.
-
Me too. Main reason now would be the possibilty to reduce the height of the chassis, as they done.
But with 2 different GPUs they need 2 mainboards too. That is expansive. -
Which is why I'll bet on them still using MXM slots. Having soldered GPUs, with 2 different options, would be a nightmare with the repair costs.
But whether they're still using that proprietary MXM is up in the air. -

I should have one here soonish.
I'll let you all know as soon as it gets here -
Yes, only one hdd bay is shown, but on the other hand, page A-17 (Recovery DVD) mentions locking the secondary hard drive, and I don't think they were thinking about caddies when they made this. Also, in page A-20, they talk about creating a RAID set. Secondary bay access from the top maybe?

Hey guys, I'm brand new to laptop gaming (been a desktop gamer prior to this) and almost purchased a g74 today before realizing that a new model with a 600 series card is on its way soon. I stumbled on this website and am impressed with the level of technical analysis you guys are bringing to the table.
That being said there are lots of musings and I had a hard time solidifying the facts.
My questions:
1. the current g74sx on newegg has a 560m, is the 660m going to be worth purchasing at 'brand new release' price or should I see if the g74sx drops in price and purchase that?
Link: Newegg.com - ASUS G74SX-NH71 Notebook Intel Core i7 2670QM(2.20GHz) 17.3" 12GB Memory DDR3 500GB HDD 7200rpm DL DVD±RW/CD-RW NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M
2. is the 670m guaranteed to be 27% faster than the 660m and is the price difference (looks like $400 difference) going to justify the price difference?
3. is it confirmed that the 660m 2GB is going to be 128bit while the 660m 3GB is 192bit? -
There is no 660m 192 bit. The 660m will be a good bit more powerful and cooler and less wattage used. The 660m 'maximum' is 384 CUDA cores @ 835mhz, 2GB GDDR5 @ 4ghz. The 670m is 192bit, so maybe it's a misprint, the 670m == 570m, so performance should be exactly the same, I'd personally stick with the 660m which will have higher overclocking headroom, and will improve with drivers, 28nm, also.
-
new G75 will be more expensive than G74 and I think it is not worth it
new graphics will be a bit faster and probable You will not notice in real life
675 (old 580) is much better 256bit card but not available in G75
please correct me if Im wrong -
So in that regard, the extra bit of cash is worth paying to get the 2.3ghz quad core processor and the 660m versus getting the 2.2ghz quad core and the 560m
Battery life would theoretically improve with the 660 versus the 560, then.
Sounds like I'll wait it out. -

Ivy Bridge is there more or less for the PCI-E 3.0 and native USB / thunderbolt support.
The chip runs cooler and a lot less wattage is used.
Performance wise the Ivy Bridge is only slightly faster (less than 5%)
I suggest waiting for the G75 over the G74 unless you can nab it for a really low price. -
@ciddireblackire - do you know when it comes out?

I would be suspect of that link. It's not even at ASUS
-
How did they manage to make a 17" and 15" the exact same weight?
-
The pictures of 17" shows that it's much thinner than last years model which makes it lighter. So that might mean that the 15" should be about the same width and height as last year and has the same weight?

Looks to be a nice enough machine.. Price at $1400 is a tad high for what you get.. but still. .not bad. -
I don't really trust either of those sites... i'll probably just wait for newegg to get it in stock.
-
For me so far the biggest plus would be Thunderbolt port for future eGPUs.
-
ciddireblackire Notebook Consultant
Well here's the thing about those sites...
Distro doesn't have the final wholesale price nor is it in their systems (I asked today because I have about 15-20 preorder people interested)
So they are either assuming the actual price point (which btw is waaay under msrp) or taking a huge financial risk -
The Samsung series 7 gamer seems like an all around better laptop. It have the GTX 675m rather than the 660m or 670m
-
Except that it's $1899.
Asus ROG G55 & G75 in April with gtx 670m
