hey thx for confirming
btw, does it get really loud under heavy load? what about idle?
how's the temperature?
ty!
-
Well I haven't didn't test everything yet but so far:
Idle temps - cpu : 35c-43c gpu : ~37
Max temp so far - cpu: (25min prime95) 89c gpu: 78
The fan is really silent during light usage (web browsing, word) at least for me, heavy usage its loud not sure how to describe its loudness :/.
That's all I got so far, ill write a review if I get the time.suyu likes this. -
what about the temp of light usage?(like watching twitch, 720p or 1080 youtube)?
Does it annoy you when it is very loud under heavy usage? -
1080p youtube : ~42c
I also played 1080p mkv(Sintel) max it reached was 45.
Well I play skyrim and FFIV maxed out and it doesn't get too loud, compared to during prime95 and benchmarks. But then again the volume might be negating the loudness. If you guys know any way to measure/check the loudness of the fans let me know ill be glad to try it and let u guys know. -
thats good, I would like to see the db.
I think you can use one of those phone apps to record it
like this one https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=kr.sira.sound&hl=en
there might be a better way though -
Guys do you thing this version is worth of buying it? I have it for 993dol

If it's a similar price to similarly equipped models then the build should win you over

Hey guys
What's the difference between ASUS ROG GL551JM-EH74 and ASUS ROG GL551JM-EH71. The EH74 seems to be a newer model but I can't get any information on what the difference is.
Thanks in advance. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
I can't see any major differences, it may just be a slightly different brand of display or hard drive.
-
Thanks, that's what I was hoping because I bought the EH71 model a couple of weeks agoo and was little worried.

New tech will always come out
Even if it was better then so long as you ensured it was what you needed when you got it then you would still be set. They don't set auto destruct on the old ones after all
-
Yea it was what I needed, just was going to be pisssed as hell if it was a better quality screen and better cooling. Both are acceptable in the one I have but if it was less than a month later and they were improved, i would not have been happy.
-
What's the build quality on this vs the acer aspire versus the acer vn7 line ? For 800euros I can get the g551jk with 850m. For the same price acer v nitro has the 860m and a real ssd
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Acer machines are always built down to a price so the quality is generally lower but they pack hardware in.
-
I've been following this thread for a while, like several others of you it seems. Amazon has had a low-mid level version of this for a week or two and I was wondering if many of you were going to cave and buy this type model, wait for a possible higher spec model, or have moved on to a similar alternative?
(ASUS G551JM-DH71-CA Republic of Gamers (ROG) (15.6-inch, i7-4710HQ, 8GB-DDR3, 750GB HDD, GTX860M-2G, DVDRW, Windows 8.1, Black)
This model has the IPS screen, unlike the GL, which is a priority for me, but it downgraded to 8GB RAM from 16 and 750 HDD from 1TB in the GL version
Thanks -
Honestly, I wouldn't buy it unless the price was way lower IMO. The 900M series are out. Its not your fault they're behind the schedule. If you can wait, then wait. If you need it right now then maybe you should consider it. Read the reviews.

The 860m is not up for replacement at the moment.
-
is there a big difference between the 2gb 860m and the 4gb ?
because in europe we have g551 with the 2 different versions ( and IPS screen
)
-
What about the clickpad ? The left/right click, is it really as bad? I have seen the laptop in the shop however they don't let you test it with the computer on.
-
Does anyone know how to replace the Asus GL551 screen with an IPS screen?
-
From gaming perspective... Not too much... If there's a game that needs 4gb... The 860m might have a hard time with it... Or so I feel
-
I've read that someone complained about coil whine, is it really bad ?
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Coil whine will be different on each unit.

Hi Guys
So I recently set my router to 5 GHZ and 40 mhz and every device in my house has no trouble connecting to the internet. However, the GL551 wont find the wifi network, even if I place it right next to the router. Does anyone know what's going on?
Additionally, if anyone has any suggestions as to how I might replace the screen with an IPS screen please let me know.
Thanks! -

Does it connect ok to the 2.4ghz band?
-

What wireless did your system come with? Because not every model has dual-band WLAN card. -
Yea, perfectly fine.
-
Hey
This is the one I bought
Amazon.com : ASUS ROG GL551JM-EH71 15.6-Inch Gaming Laptop w/ Nvidia GTX 860M Graphics, 256GB SSD : Computers & Accessories
The wireless type is: 802.11bgn -
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
Both 2.4 & 5 GHz can connect to N, but your WLAN card doesn't detect the 5GHz SSID then it's a single-band WLAN adapter.
Go to Device Manager, under network adapters you can see the model of WLAN card installed. -
I came quite close in sealing the deal and purchasing and/or importing an Asus G551 after moving on disappointed at HP's new line of mid to high performance machines (being a long time HP fan) until just last week when they announced a new line of HP high performance machines called the Omen 15. You have to take a gander at this beast. It has awesome specs with an i7-4710hq quad, gtx 860m, Full HD 1080 IPS display, and some additional welcome embellishments like customizable LEDs around the laptop that could leave alienware in the dust. And not to mention Beats audio which is a must if you use laptop speakers sometimes, which I use a lot of; audio speakers quality on the Asus G551, the lack of subwoofer and from reviews and reports are all around subpar. The Omen 15t also has a dual fan cooling system. One small aspect of these specs that I'm hesitant about is the non-matte touch screen display, though it is an IPS display, I would have preferred a non-touch matte display. But anyway, this is what I now plan on buying within the next few months. I'm absolutely gushing about this laptop haha

An added note, if you're considering getting a machine with a dedicated video card with 4GB, i just wanted to add that it is highly unnecessary unless you plan on multitasking and running a ton of heavy apps and games, all at the same time and do some heavy video editing, and even then, it might be a bit overkill. 2GB is enough and would personally save my money for some other upgrade feature. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
The brand of the speakers matters little, it's what they actually sound like that does. It lacks a 2.5 inch bay and optical drive which puts it in a fairly different category.
Considering HP's history it will be wait and see if the machine is properly designed. -
Yes, brand does matter little, but as I've mentioned the sound quality is sub par as per many reviews have stated and as comparatively with other Asus laptops with the same speaker setup/ builds, with no built in subwoofer, going by that, it will be hard to take advantage of full HD movies and video games in terms of sound. Most serious gamers will use headphones or ear buds anyway. I just thought I'd point that part out as it is an important aspect for me, not necessarily for everyone.
And where are you getting that it's missing a 2.5 inch bay? It offers SSD SATA support as well as a PCIe SSD upgrade which means it has both a SATA and PCIe slot. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Sata and pci-e have a variety of different connections. In this case the lack of mechanical hdd option gives it away
-
I am aware of the different format connections. But you may be right... I should look into this further; if so, I will be sorely disappointed.
Then again, they may be omitting an HDD option for the sake of performance speeds.
Edit: I just called HP to find out and it does have a standard sized hard drive bay, HOWEVER, it doesn't look like it's easy to open up as opposed to the Pavilion and Envy computers with the door to access the components, according to the sales rep who sounded like he knew what he was talking about, thankfully. He was able to actually look at the Omen in person and confirm that for me. Very interesting... He suggested I can wait a bit to see if there are any teardown videos that will be posted online just to get a better idea, but he said it seemed like the machine has a single-body snap-on design/ configuration and no visible screws to easily access the inside unless perhaps there are special tools to do so. This is unfortunate as I may want to upgrade a hard drive or memory in the future, say. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Interesting they are not offering a mech hdd then. As always wait and see before jumping if you are unsure

Hi, has anyone tried running Linux Mint 17 or Ubuntu 14.04 on the laptop? I am concerned mainly for the wi-fi / ethernet drivers, the touchpad and the keyboard backlit. I've seen other Asus laptops similar to this one running it, but unless I go to store and try a live usb I can't be sure.
-
Hi,
I just got my G551JM and put my old HDD with fedora 20 (latest kernel), everything seems to be working fine, except fn+f5 and fn+f6 (Display Brightness adjustment). This could be because my old laptop was Lenovo and I didn't went for a fresh install.
Dont forget to install bumblebee to get Nvidia card working.
Best Regards,
Presian -
Thanks for the feedback pizzasogood. The suggested laptop does interest me, but as mentioned above I'm going to want to see how its reviewed when it comes out.
-
Its not just this asus model a few other models have the brightness issue too.
If your using grub try changing/adding this to the config
Code:GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="acpi_osi="

You might want to re-install the video drivers. -
Found a listing on Amazon (US) for the G551JM (that is, GTX860M and IPS screen). It's on expensive side at roughly $1400, though. Also, it's a third party seller from Canada.

You could get a Clevo P650SE for 1300 from XoticPC with a 970M.. What a joke by Asus..
-
Has anyone tried replacing the display to a matte IPS display?
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
So long as it's the same connector/size it would work.
-
I've been asking the same thing, doesn't seem like anyone has. -
Just getting really tired of waiting for this machine with little to no new info/updates and am now considering going for this black friday deal for $1200 (reported $200 off).
ASUS N550JK-DB74T
Intel Core i7-4710HQ 2.5GHz (Turbo 3.5 GHz).
256GB Solid-State Drive. 16GB RAM. NVIDIA GTX850M 2GB-VRAM.
15.6-Inch Full-HD IPS Touchscreen Display. 720P HD Webcam.
3x USB 3.0, 1x HDMI, 1x MiniDisplay. SDXC Card Reader. 802.11 A/C, Gigabit ethernet port.
Aluminum body construction
the GTX850M and 2GB ddr3 my two concerns, and if I am getting a decent deal?
Any input to go for this (or continue to wait in frustration lol) would be greatly appreciated -
I suppose it depends on how much you game. I understand that the 850 plays modern games on 1080p just fine, from mid to high settings. It will probably fall short in a couple of years though.
I think it's a great deal actually, but you may consider buying the 1TB version ($950 right now on amazon) and swapping the HDD for a 500ssd (about $200). It's a hassle doing it yourself and a little more money, but you get double the storage. And honestly, if you're going to game... You'll need it.
I find 8GB enough for the RAM, that's why I don't take it into account, though that may not be the case with you.
Edit: also, remember you'll be getting a better screen! I hear it's pretty good. -
Thank you much fabiodiaz,
I had looked at going with that option briefly, but couldnt decide if it would be worth the hassle.
I'm not a huge gamer, but the programs use for architecture and rendering require the higher specs.
I get confused which models support what modifications, but could I clone the OS onto said 500GB SSD and then replace the optical drive with the included HD?
I could upgrade the RAM at a later date if the 8GB in fact was not going to be enough, just a bit more hassle I guess.
Edit: just looked again and its a i7-4700HQ on the HD option rather than a i7-4710HQ on the SSD, which makes me a little more hesitantLast edited: Dec 1, 2014 -
I know that replacing the DVD drive with the HHD can be done. I think cloning the HDD to the SSD causes problems, though. So you may have to do it "manually".
I'm really not the best person for this, sorry, but you can get your way around it with enough info and care, I'm sure. There's a lot of info on the N550 thread, as well as YouTube and other sites.
This is one: http://www.vineetdhanawat.com/blog/2014/02/asus-n550jv-db72t-db71/
Something to note: the GL model with 256ssd is on $1050 on amazon right now. I personally prefer the N550 anyway because of the screen and because I can't stand the ROG design gibberish.
