such a long wait for such a powerless GPU??? -
oh wow..... wasn't expecting it to be that long. well then... decisions...
-
If that its true definitly i will buy the alienware M17x R3 with 6970
I cant wait more!!!

To those people saying the new G74 is ugly and you feel much better yadda yadda just have no choice because you are stuck with the g73 (of course you woudn't admit it) unless of course you try and sell it and you know you will only get 80-85% of the price you paid for it brand new back then. Real Talk
-
...and you sound like someone who doesn't own a G73....sry to say but your comments sound rude
-
-
-
... no way... here we go M17x R3!!!
-
As for the supposed specs? If it really is going to be just a 560m or a 6870m instead of a 6970 or 570, then why even bother, just grab a current g73 model. If the specs are true it sure doesn't make the g74 look like a true successor to the g73 line. -
Hopefully that Red trim is not a final design and just a prototype.. Makes the machine look tacky compared to the all Black ..

Let's keep it civil please... bickering about the G73 is not needed.
I merged two G74 threads together, it might look messy a page or two back. -
Any pictures of it?
-
Merged in somewhere back there.
-
Here are the pictures of it.
-
Looks hefty but also very durable. I like the keyboard, holy cow that's nice!
I want this machine.
HEY GARY! Is there a G73 to G74 trade-in policy? -
ALLurGroceries Vegan Vermin Super Moderator
I like what they did with the keyboard, right shift is full size and properly aligned. Also the arrow keys can be found by touch. The numpad is still not a standard layout but I guess that's asking a bit much.
Looks good as a strictly gaming-only machine. Too bad there still isn't any expresscard, 1394, or esata. That rules out any possibility of me buying it since I need 1394 for my audio interface and esata for my 3TB drives (>2.2TB is a no-go on current USB enclosures). As for their claim of "completely redesigned," it looks like there has been a bit of redesign but it looks very familiar. -
True, they still lack the useful ports. I don't get why they took it off, the g72gx was perfect with it. Why take it of on the later models. and what is the ac port still doing on the right side of system. If it was placed at the rear, it would be perfect.
-
I just looked at notebook check review and the 560m performs on par or slightly below the 5870m. No benchmarks yet though. -
ALLurGroceries Vegan Vermin Super Moderator
Yeah it's definitely a cost cutting measure. They have to make compromises, it's just too bad since every G series until the G73 had all the ports you could ask for.
-
Strange were is the battery ?
-
-
I like the 73 design better. The Alienware still looks the best out of all gaming notebooks imo.

pause that video at 0:34 0:35....look at the back...you can see some seperation from the back above the vents...that looks like the battery too me....and a funky one at that....you can see the seperation like it was put on....it looks unatural compared to G73's looks...

I'd like to say some things in defense of this new design, but in order to do so I have to talk about some features of the current G73 chassis.
There isn't anyone on this forum who feels more strongly than I do that the G73 is a great looking laptop with an innovative case design. However, Asus had to make some changes in order to call it a G74.
The weaknesses of the G73 case design have been mentioned before on this forum, and include:
1. The speaker grille traps dirt and dust and is extremely hard to clean.
It's also somewhat confusing because it looks like it's covering something
more than just two small one inch speakers.
2. The battery placement on the G73 makes it easy to remove the battery
however, the proximity to the exhaust ports, especially the GPU exhaust
causes the battery to be exposed to alot more heat than it otherwise
would. This extra heat may cause premature wear.
3. The G73 has an angled design that contributes to it's stealth look.
This includes the front edge of the laptop base where notification lights are,
there you have an additional tapered angle that makes the laptop's first
inch at the base very thin. So thin that that it is probably wasted space.
4. I'm not sure about this last point but it seems that the ducting for the
exhaust is not completely sealed so that all the air flows directly through heatpipe radiator and out the back.
It seems that all these things may have been corrected in the new G74 design so that though it doesn't look as highly stylized it's actually more refined from a functional point of view.
Yea, and the keyboard is nicer but the red stripe look kinda dumb. -
Where's the subwoofer? =s
-
Yikes, Good question!
-
The cooling is something similar to sager and eurocoms GPU cooling. The heatsink and fan are all in one and all on the GPU and CPU. Bad part is that it does not take air from the top and only from the front (not a good option to use on a bed or blanket). So if its not getting the air from the top then the subwoofer might be in the center on the speakers.....if it has a subwoofer.
Now i saw the battery. On the bottom to the right there is a release clip.
Good thing is that the bottom vent holes are bigger. I keep my G73 on a coolingpad and just by removing the cover on the bottom i get 3-4c lower temps.
A nother strange this is that is this the end product that they will ship 3Q ? The video for the screensaver is the G73 and to be honest some parts dont mach up in color like the battery and the gray part under the screen.
Seems more like a prototype to me.
Also as i said before look like asus does not want you to upgrade the notebook as they have hiden the CPU and GPU. On the G73 i could atleast see the GPU a bit but on this only Storage and Ram is open to upgrade. -
I hope some really good 18" models come out from other company's or Asus. This Asus G74SX looks like it would be a bad model for me. I lay down and have laptop on chest a lot. I leave the battery out but that wouldn't work as well with the way the battery is in the G74SX. I also hope to have the screen as far back as possible on my next laptop and this one looks about the same as the G73. I'd also like the air intake to not come from the bottom.
I don't think that is what the laptop will look like when it comes out though. They are probably still working on that or don't want everyone to see what it is really going to look like this early. -

-
I must say it is loosing its stealth factor with this a-la sager , bukly, look :/
-
I'm surprised by all the negativity here. I guess I'll be the detractor and say I think the new G74 is pretty decent looking. It appears to be a minimalist design and the screen seems very promising based on the viewing angles I saw in the videos. It's not a bad design from the looks of it and should be better than the G73 from what I see.
-
Any idea when it comes out?
-
-
I only wish that Asus would at least offer an option for the 6970m.
The 560m is an upgrade but is it a worthwhile upgrade.
At 10000 in Vantage it seems like it will be 20-25% faster than the G73. -
Design is ok except back vents. Those are childish looking design tho. For me it's like going backward from current gen.
-
Having just the 560M puts this quite a distant behind the M17X R3 and P170HM, in terms of gaming power.
-
Well i guess i wont grab the Asus G74SX after all. D:
In Norway the G73JW is just barely cheaper than what Alienware offers.
And this new G74SX is gonna end up at the same price point i guess. -
Would seem it's almost a downgrade. The vantage score includes the PhysX score, may want to look at the actual GPU score. -
I do like how the Hard Drive indicator lights up from the edge and the top of the front (pretty sure I saw that in the vid).
So is the speaker grill different now so it doesn't collect dust because I can't really tell.
The red line ... come on! I agree it looks Tacky! If funny how people have complained in the past about lights, design's and colored stripes where asus listen only to now start re-implementing them in again?
The screen angles looked very good but the one thing I wanted to see was the angle from the bottom. He's moving the screen and camera in all directions but when he's about to show the view from the bottom he stops. Argh! -
I think it looks good. The heat vents are much larger, which implies improved cooling which is always good. The keyboard looks great, I'm sure it will be backlit, it's only a prototype so far.
560m is a shame, but it makes it easy to keep my current g73.
This will be a great laptop for new buyers since it should be affordable, but current owners will have little incentive to upgrade (which is good for me, I hate temptation). -
I think that Asus is going to go with 560m because of 3D.
The G74SX may end up being the fastest 3DVision gaming laptop unless some 485m equipped laptop also has a 120Hz screen option. -
The 560M isn't faster than the 460M though, and neither is suited for 3D gaming going forward.
-
Ugh, they kept the palmrest from the G73. I was hoping they'd make it aluminum because it gets scratched easily and the look over time just looks bleh.
Asus ROG G74 coming?
