I apologize, after looking at that article on notebookcheck.net I have to say that the 560m
    isn't much faster than a 460m.

Sorry about the confusion. So the increase in performance is just from a slightly higher clock rate which probably would only net you a few extra fps.
    Is that correct?

I've found that using a really good automotive rubber protectant helps maintain the G73 rubberized coating including the palmrest.
It does leave some oily residue but that fades away after a few hours.

Anyone else watch the CEBit video where they showed the back panel? The GPU/CPU and fans are still inaccessible. Too bad they didn't fix that.

    Carbon fiber mod...
    Drool...
This may warrant a separate thread

Yeah, I don't think that Asus likes the idea of users upgrading the CPU/GPU even if it's just a paste upgrade.

What about the big black frame on the inside... Is that just to keep us from seeing the rest of the internals of the demo unit?

Well, the GTX560m will definitely be faster if they increase the bus width to 192bit with 1.5GB VRAM just like the GTX460m.
I just don't understand why they downgraded the GTX560m, heat and power demand?

This is just odd, the difference in performance in GTX560m and GTX460m is so little!!

Is it even confirmed that it's the 560m? A notebook of that size and with improved cooling points to something more powerful IMO. Asus isn't stupid.

Edit: I saw the video again and noticed it says 560M. I still think Asus will release a version with at least 6970M available. It could be that they are limiting the 3D model to the 560M.

That's my guess as well. No point having such a huge vents. They maybe trying to surprise competitors and G series owners. :D

I really hope they change that crappy looking rear vents.

Yeah it can be added to your M17x no problem just let me know ;).

Anythings possible but i hope they offer something better then that card when it hits production .

We still have some time if the rumors of July ish are true so hopefully things change for the better on the GPU end.. Its doubtful but yeah..

Alrighty. At CeBit asus is showcasing their next laptop in the G-series.
The specs seems really interesting GTX 560M, Full HD 3D, Sandy Bridge etc.
But i have to admit that the laptop looks a bit ugly...

I wouldn't call that a switch, people had the option of choosing whichever they like, and the 460m was mainly introduced to allow the introduction of 3d which the 5870m doesn't support, so not that stupid if you ask me

I'm just being facetious, but my point is that Asus is no longer targeting the highest end of the GPU spectrum. They seem to be hovering around GPUs which are equal to or less than $400 and ~65W, which may mean the $508, >75W 6970M is out of reach.

Asus wants mainstream penetration, and has given up on competing with Clevo and Dell's ultra-high end kits..

Yeah, Asus didn't even include the 5870 on the G53 and that sucks. Temps are no problem given that you have repasted and cleaned your fan blades properly.

This is such a disappointment. When it's released around September (don't even think about July, that's Q2 by the Asus calendar) it will have nothing new to offer in terms of performance. The 560m isn't much faster than the 5870 for christ sakes. It's just a rebranded 460m, like all the other rebrands in the 5xx series, with only minor adjustments.

Well that makes my 4 months old Asus G73JH-B1 obsolete.

How would it be priced you think? I got my B1 for $1500 CAN brand-new during a sale, right now they're going for $1800 regular price.

So assuming the first retail model of the G74 series laptop hits shelves late 2011...it would cost around $2100?

These reports on the internet about the 560m are all completely conflicted!!!

One thing to note about the laptop shown at Cebit is that it had a 2820 CPU and 16GB of ram instead of a 2620.

So how do we know the GPU in there (N12E-GS-A1) is actually
    the 560m?
    It's all very confusing!
Actually the above articles from softpedia and laptop-computer-planet say that the 560m will have the same core as the desktop GTX 560?!
That would put on par with the 485m in terms of shader processing units!

That report makes no sense, though. That would literally make the GTX 560M, a GF114 485M.

The GPU-Z and Control Panel screenshots have already shown it at 192 shaders.

smartest movie ever here, getting the overheating problem given by 5870 solved while keeping even lower tems, similar performances (even some better in bench, some worse in real gaming) and the *OMG* 3-D* capacity* that got so many people buying a system that cannot perform games at Full HD with max details and 3d... making the next 3D capable GPU more appealing whatever power increase will bring (even if minimal) and thus gaining more and more money...

If that is being stupid, hell, asus really is a stupid company...

I disagree, the G73 is popular because it has great specs and stylish design at a relatively low price. Asus is facing more competition from the likes of alienware and MSI. If they want to continue be on top with the G74 then they have to find a way push the envelope especially in terms of price vs. performance.

I just hope its the same price as the G73JH-A1 models are when it comes out. But right now, I'm not seeing the advantage on this thing compared to other competitors any longer. It needs to be cheap at least.

    Will it be 3D ready?

Yeah the 5870m was a great GPU and still is but it was less expensive than the fastest Nvidia parts. And the 480m, 485m and 6970m reach a new plateau for power and cooling requirements.

Amd/Ati for the past few years has managed to produce products that are a bit more efficient and less expensive.

Asus has introduced a new laptop model at the CeBIT expo, the G74SX 3D. This gaming laptop, the successor to the G73, is a beast of a notebook, coming in at 17.3-inches with full HD resolution (1920x1080) and a quad-core i7 2630QM Sandy Bridge processor. The extra girth will also allow for two hard drive bays, dual fans, and four SODIMM slots for a maximum of 16GB DDR3 RAM, all of which will be easily accessible by the user from the bottom of the laptop. Pictures and videos of the new notebook suggest the usual card reader, USB ports, Ethernet, VGA and HDMI-out.

As the model name suggests, the notebook will be 3D ready, which Asus claims will be able to reach over 10,000 points in the 3D Vantage benchmark. This is no doubt helped by the included high-end Nvidia Geforce GTX 560M graphics. In our first benchmarks, the pre-sample achieved approx. 13900 points in 3DMark06. This is on a level of a fast GTX 460M, as the pre-sample only featured 1GB of graphics ram leading to a small 128 Bit memory bus and a performance hit. If Asus uses this stripped down version or includes the GTX 560M with 1.5 GB RAM (and the expected higher performance) is still not clear.

In terms of looks, the screen and the chassis will surprisingly be all matte instead of the traditional glossy as seen on many other laptops these days. However, the pre-sample was equipped with the matte 3D screen. The non 3D screen may be glossy.

Pricing and availability have yet to be announced, but watch the video below for a more hands-on preview of the upcoming G74SX 3D.

    Videos:
    <embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/HwjYA1BPJk4?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width='640' height="390"></embed></object>

    (credit to notebookcheck)

*So, the Asus Will be a great laptop:
    3D
    FHD(1920x1080)
    Quad-core i7 2630QM
GTX 560M with 1.5 GB RAM
    Two hard drive bays
    Duel fans(like G73)
    16GB RAM(6GB~16GB)
    Usual card reader
    USB Ports 3.0
    VGA and HDMI - out

so, I guess the price will be around the 1500$+...

What do you think about the laptop?
