My G73 looks better than that! (except for the exhausts (maybe))

But what this one lacks in beauty it compensates in power..

And looks like they've gotten smarter by putting all 4 RAM slots on the bottom :p

You could save another 400$ by substituting the 485m with the equally performing 6970m.

It would be awesome if this one has Optimus enabled.

It doesn't look nice at all, the stealth look is almost gone by reposition the outlets at the back

The big bottom panel looks like opening the laptop for maintenance will be much easier. That alone would be a big advantage compared to G73, imo.

Unfortunately, The only advantage from that big panel are the ram. The ram under the keyboard was replaced. GPU and CPU is still not accessible thru the bottom panel. Who knows how many steps again to get access to the cpu and gpu.

Yeah I think so too...unless someone have $400 and no prob at all hehe..

Oh by the way, that picture the bottom part of the G74 has no more openings. No more cooler XD

I think the G73 looks way better.

The G74 is going to burn your legs since the exhaust is tilted back downwards if you game on your lap like I do.

I wonder why they took a perfectly good design and butchered it? = /

The G73's upward vent tilt was one of the reasons I was originally interested in it

Funny that you say that since you dont know the temps on it. And if you are using it on your legs then it must not be hard tasks your are performing more like websurfing and such. suchs task only recuires 10% performance so expect around 30-37 C

you have it on your lap and that's how it gets warm ...

I did mention gaming (on lap) in my original post, so it is "hard" tasks ;) With the G53/73 I was able to game for 4-5hrs on my lap and it was perfectly fine.

Even if the G74 is a little cooler overall, I never felt a touch of heat with the G53/73 design when gaming on my lap due to the tilted vents.

Makes me look forward to something like the Alienware M18x. So far Asus is disappointing with the specs on the G74. It's to small of a step up that its ok for new customers but not good enough to spend $2k to improve on a G73. I don't know if I will get an Alienware but I do like the Asus forums better. The Alienware forums seem to be run by control freak mods.

This is just utterly disappointing. :(
I expected ASUS would be nice like AW and Clevo, letting user access the internal bits easily. And not that they can't but they chose to not do it from the look of the pic.

I don't like the look of the G74. Its to bulky, and it has lost it's "Stealth-fighter look" a bit I think.

I really really like the new keyboard, but that's all I like about the new model.

Although i haven't got the money to buy a G73SW yet, but I will get them about may. So I'm thinking about waiting untill the G74 comes out, then the prices on the G73 will drop, and then I'm better off with that.

But is it possible that the design will change? I mean, do you think it's only a prototype design?

One last opportunity - Someone knowing anything about a newer model of the G73 coming out, with better GPU maybe?

Sigh... They really, really, REALLY need to stick a 6970m in there.
No reason why they can't make a somewhat more expensive version for people who don't need 3D. The 6970m shouldn't be more than $250 more if that.

AS others have mentioned - YOU may not use it for such tasks, but others do. I love kicking back on the couch, and playing some NFS:HP, WoW, etc. The G73 does not get hot either, which is a HUGE change from my previous gateway. But as it is, lots of people game on their lap.

    Asus G74
I've read this article and agree to it completely, I'll tread carefully. I've had enough bad experience with the First asus laptop that I've ever bought i.e Asus g73. I'll wait for others experience first. but if all of us do that, who will buy the g74?

Too bad it the real goodies aren't easily accessible, like how they had the G50 and G51 set up.

Looks like I'm skipping this notebook again. Darn. I like Asus, too.

That, and the lack of a high-end GPU break the deal for me. A rebadged GTX 460M is just not going to cut it in 2011.

I love the keyboard layout though; It's pure class. If only the G74 had even the GTX 570M, I'd by in an instant. As it stands, I'm deciding between Clevo and Alienware.

Also, what possessed them to put the tomato red trim across the front? It scars what is otherwise a good looking machine.

Don't get me wrong I love the look of my G73 but DAMN.... this thing is nice!

CPU is pretty similar to the G73SW and the GTX560m is a reworked GTX460M but the look... simply stuning.

I agree. I am in love with the look of this machine.

My sole issue is the power of the GPU. The GTX 560M just isn't enough of an upgrade, for me.

Damn i am tired of this hate going on about the GPU. We don't know it that is the real release model of the 560m. If it was the one which was in the pre-sample it's likely to be a Alpha model of it. Here is what does who actually made the "review" wrote to the lack of power:

Looks like this will make a great replacement for my almost two year old G71GX. I'd like to set mine up with 2 SSD's in RAID 0 and 8 GB of RAM, plenty of power for VMware, GNS3 and gaming!

Exactly. We know what it isn't. For me, that's enough to be disappointed.

I can see that even the best case scenario, for the GTX 560M's specs, isn't fast enough for my needs.

Only a GTX 570M would make me happy.

Looking around, it appears the whole site's dedicated to Asus, and possibly Asus-funded. So not quite the Christmas miracle, I thought it to be.

Any news on the release date? I moved to greece but my mother in law is coming the 5th of Mai and I want her to bring me the g74. If its not out by then do you guys have another idea for a notebook with similar specs around the same price? Alienware or something else? Where is the cheaper place I can get an alienware. Is their website the cheapest?

    Thanks.
