If the scar and hero 1060 model will come out 3rd week of October, will the standard 1060 model come out before then?

I forgot to mention about the traditional version, thanks for bringing that up. As far as I concern, pricing of the Hero/Scar will be quite similar to the Tradition, so it really depends on product managers of every region whether they feel like to sell it or nor.

Yeah I noticed it a couple of hours ago! 0,14mm thicker and 0,1kgs so that’s negligible! I like the fact that it comes with a proper 230watt powerbrick iso the 180 Watts the 502VS came with.

Only thing I don’t understand is the USB 3.1 type C thunderbolt port is Gen 1? Shouldn’t a thunderbolt port per definition be a Gen 2 port?

I doubt that. But maybe undervolting will help keeping things under control.

I like the GL503 look very much, but I'm not sure if they improved the build quality, especially around the screen (it's a shame seeing those good GL553/GL502 screens with annoying backlight bleeding)

Today I saw a Reddit thread that has either been removed or I just can't find anymore. I wanted to post it here but I was in the middle of picking my daughter up from school and just exited the Reddit app without saving the link.

Anyhow, it was an Asus employee talking about the 503/703 with the 1060.

Someone asked when it would be released and why it wasn't released with the 1050 version.

The Asus employee responded to the guy and said Asus originally had plans to release both at the same time with the Scar and Hero coming later in October. He stated the reason why Asus hasn't released the 1060 version is because they had to design a new thermal system for it. He even went into detail saying the thermal system will consist of 3 separate heat pipes for the GPU and 2 separate heatpipes for the CPU.

If this is true then maybe Asus finally pulled their heads out of their...

To me that sounds like great news, if they deliver the VM later it adds to the rumors of improved cooling for the 1060.. which I'd happily wait a bit longer for.

Early reviews of the GL503VD on amazon reported very, very slow (barely usable) hard disks too. Maybe it's a SW related problem...

Good to see -VM models coming in US this month, but the price is high. To be fair it's already high for the 1050 models. Basically all competition offer equivalent models for around 200$ less.

@williamaltu what is that you don't agree with the review? Did you try a model too?

So do we have any expected date?

I'm really close to just pulling the trigger on a gl502VS with a 1070 and 120hz display, but my concern is that Asus might just be planning to roll out the gl503 with the 8th gen CPUs on the 5th?

    Does this seem likely?

I don't want to have an immediately obsolete machine, but I'm getting tired of waiting at this point.

It's around 200$ more than GL502VS and about on par with the higher line (G752VS). I wouldn't call it "pretty good price" for now, let's hope under the hood they made a good job worth it of an upgrade.

@Welshmousepk This is just my impression, but I think that manufactures will adopt 8th gen CPUs slightly slower than previous generations. So I don't think we will see any notebook with coffee lake anytime soon. Oct 5 is very close, so you can wait if you want, but only desktop CPUs are planned to be launched. We will talk about new mobile CPUs only next year.

    PS
what the post before this is about? :vbconfused:

Giving gl503 (standard) such a low score based on only 1 configuration, knowing the same machine has 2 or 3 more configurations.

I think the low rating is because of the problematic HDD. About configurations and prices, as usual they will vary in each market.

    Hi, all

From what I've just heard is that the Hero version will only come with the GTX 1060 3 Gb instead of 6 Gb (not sure if this is the GTregional thing) and it should be released on October 16-19 according to the schedule. Pricing is around $1399-$1599.
I've been using the MSI GE63VR Raider with the gtx 1070. Overall, it feels nice. If I wasn't wrong, there is a comment on the top saying that the Hero & Scar have 2 heat pipes for the CPU and 3 for GPU, so that's 5 in total. I am really worried about thermal management on the Asus Scar (1070 version) because the temp on my MSI (7 heat pipes) already reaches up to around 68-76 degree Celcius (already undervolted CPU -0.1200 mV, before undervolting was 85 max) after playing Overwatch for an hour, so I fear that with only 5 heat pipes it can reach up to 80 something.
Also, I fear that there will be a delay if Asus decides to fix the SSHD issue going on with their GL503VD units, but the chance is very unlikely cuz they are releasing the new FX503 line up too anyway. But the issue really needs to be addressed cuz that is unacceptable for an over-$1000 gaming laptop.
Here is the link to the pricing and config of the GL503VS. I am sorry because my source didn't allow me to announce it until this afternoon he sent me this site, so I decided to fool around a bit for the past few days :p

What's the SSHD problem with the current 503/703 models?

Also, I personally wouldn't get a 1070 model in a chassis this size. The Raider is the first semi thin laptop with decent thermals for the 1070 models and like you said, it has 7 heat pipes.

Where did you read about the heat pipe set up in the 703 models with the 1060 and 1070?

To @jrwingate6 , I think I got the info about the heat pipes set up from one of your comments. I tried to dig info bout the heat pipes from my source, but he said even he couldn't get access to such information beside knowing the fans are now 12 V instead of 5 V. And the concern about the SSHD is just me *****ing about it because I expect the file transferring rate of the GL503/703 (takes 2 mins 38s to copy a 4.97 gb of file, according to laptopmag.com) should be faster than a 7200 rpm HDD (takes 2 mins to copy a 4.87 gb of file), but it's a whatever I guess.

To @fayth , the only model that includes a thunderbolt 3 port is the GL503VS Scar Edition (GTX 1070), not sure how many PCIE express lanes it has tho

@fayth Price for VM version should be around $1399-$1699 depends on the config (RAM/SDD). It is coming soon, roughly October 16 or around that.

@jrwingate6 my firm didn't confirm if the information is correct or not because that's beyond his capability :p

So far, the thing I hate bout my MSI is the Killer 1435 wireless card. I will use it for like another week to see whether Imma keep this permanently

I assume the Hero will be more "limited" compares to the Scar (prob the artwork on the Hero) or Asus just gonna let Amazon, Bestbuy or Newegg sell it only. I am not so sure about that. But there is one thing I spotted from another country's website is that it shows the Hero uses the GTX 1060 3 GB instead of 6 GB. I am not sure if it is a regional thing or just a typo issue. But we shall see :)

I hope Dave2D the big dawg will get an early review on it since I am eager to see how well that "12v" fans do.

For the FX503, you can pre-order it now on ExcaliburPC if u want. It comes with GTX 1050 4gb ($999) or 1060 3gb ($1349), 60 Hz display. With that price, I would rather get the Hero with that sweet 120 Hz display, better design, ? better cooling too, I guess? Here's the link:

@Mr. H Haha sorry mate xD. The prices in the Netherlands are way off of those in the states. Example is the GX501, it’s $2699 (1080 Max-Q), while over here it is an exclusive for alternate.nl and costs €3299. (But I can get a way better deal on that one). The 1070 version is not available here ?yet?.

I’m getting the 1080 max-q or a full blown 1070 anyway! So it all comes down to heat/noise/weight/portability (I fly a lot around the world) and the biggest one, price difference! (Really curious which models and prices we can expect here!).

Ps: that’s also why I think $1899 for the GL503VS is a nice price, because the latest 502VS the same specs with (without TB3 or SSHD etc) sells at €2099.;-)
