So is there any danger of running the laptop without the covers on?
My dad thinks static electricity will own my laptop.
-
-
That's just one possibility...
There's also the danger of overheating other parts of the lappy. If you remove the cover then you are disrupting the air flow to other parts like memory modules and hard disk!
You can remove the covers only if you have a chill mat underneath. But of course there's still the risk of static damage.
Cheers!

Yea, I have my brand new Zalman NC-2000 underneath it. He thinks that like the static charge will hit the cooling pad, then jump up into my laptop.
He won't let me clean the fan nor the vents either! -
You HAVE to clean you lappy once in a while, specially the fan, heatsink and vents! Just use common sense and a nice Air Can.... (Just make sure you use the air can properly so don't ever tilt the can while in use or else liquid will spray all over the components!)
-
Now if you could tell my dad that...
I might just buy some canned air whilst coming home from school. Hell I opened up my laptop in secrecy.
But yea, there is some risk involved with running my laptop without one of the covers on, a small risk though right? -
Running your machine without the pad on is a bit risky.
For one, if you EVER forget (might get drunk one night) about the opening, you might lay your machine down on a carpet or something and screw your fans.
Also, the rate at which dust invades the cooling system would increase drastically and you will have to make sure you clean biweekly.
But if you're careful, its not a big deal. I move my laptop around a lot though, so I don't want to lay it down on a weird angle and screw my machine. -
Also this bit about the static electricity is a bit exaggerated. Unless you have a very particular setup at home like highly insulating carpeting, it's quite unlikely you will develop enough static electricity to damage the laptop.
I opened up quite a number of computers including 2 laptops and never used any precautions, and nothing ever happened. Not to say that this is a smart thing to do, you should at least touch a doorknob or something before doing it -- but just to illustrate how unlikely it is.
There are also those wristbands that ground you to the same ground as the computer before you open it up, so that you need not worry about static discharge. -
Good lad! - its the way my G1S has been set up for now like 6 months. There is no danger of static, ive had x'ammount of computers and i built them all my self, at first i used the wrist band, but i haven't for the past 4 years. None of my friends ever use it either.
About the airflow someone mentioned -- FAILED ! __ -- There is no such thing as air flow over your memory banks on the G1S nor the HDD. Its more or less 2 sealed rooms. Which means if you open the lids it only increase the flow and cooling. Also by revealing more of the copper heat sink you will only increase the cooling effect.
Cleaning the fan is really important as its lots of copper plates placed about 2 mm apart that gets clogged by dust.
Oh and i tested spilling beer with the lids open, as long as the G1S in on top of the NC 2000 its so high above the table that there is no risk
-
Are you sure about that? I'm sure I have read some reports that mentioned increased HDD temps after removing the door or that tape over the grill on the door.
-
I've tested it myself and it DOES increase the HDD and RAM compartment temps. This is without a cooler or any extra devices. Removing the tapes from the CPU compartment and the plastic from the RAM compartment lead to a noticeable increase in the temps of the RAM and HDD compartments.
-
definitely adds about 5-7c to the hard drive.
-
So for about two months or so I have had my G1S shutdown on me. It usually occurred after it had been on all day and while multitasking, say exporting a batch of photo from Lightroom as jpegs and listening to mp3s in iTunes.
It's a happened about 7 times or so, always when the cpu was in use but I wouldn't consider what I was doing stressful, especially considering this thing was a "gaming" laptop.
So I'm assuming it's overheating. The laptop does shutdown right way, but there just enough of a slight hesitation. I never see the Vista "shutting down" screen or anything. The laptop does get warm at times, I've actually had to result in having a fan on it when I'm doing anything where I think I might be pushing it too much.
I just realized that the G1S is effected by the Nvidia 8600 issue, not sure if that's what causing the problem. I did try and clean the fan but it wasn't that dusty and I honestly can't see how I can really get in there and take it apart without voiding my warranty? I did remove the black tape covering the vents on the plastic - although I still got a shutdown after doing this.
Does anyone know if removing that tape voided my warranty? I'm in Australia until the end of the year, but when I get back to Toronto I plan on taking my G1S in and asking the tech to run some tests and figure out what's going on.
I never had any issues with my G1S, I don't game on it, but I do run cpu intensive apps like 3DS Mac and After Effects. I actually haven't been pushing the thing so hard for a while. The only thing that changed was about 4 months ago I switched my options so that when I close the lid I put the laptop to sleep rather then shut it down which is what it used ot od by default and then one day it clued in that I could save some time booting uo everyday. Does anyone think there's a correlation between sleep mode and overheating?
I apologize for the long post, but one more question. Can anyone suggest I good widget or app I can leave on my desktop to monitor my system temp? Something that will work in Vista (32-bit).
Thanks. -
Yes, it sounds like overheating. G1S are not at all good with heat management. If it's clean, there's little else that you can do except:
a) Make sure the GPU downclocks when not in heavy use (i.e., use a correctly configured PowerMizer -- in newer drivers it should switch clock speeds automatically; nevertheless, check with RivaTuner that it indeed downclocks).
b) Change the thermal paste... which of course is a warranty-voiding operation so probably not something that you should do at this point.
oh and c) you could try a notebook cooler.
Removing those tapes --- I don't know if it voids warranty. But if I remember correctly, they are on a plastic door, so in the worst case you just need to buy the door? (it's cheap) ASUS eStore would be my first suggestion, but that only ships to the US.
As to the widget, I don;t know one that works in Vista. I use MobileMeter with XP. Maybe some kind of Everest plugin? -
Do you know of any other places where they sell replacement doors? I would like one but I live in Australia
-
The local ASUS service point? That would be a bit doubtful though since if you buy a part from them in an out-of-warranty fashion, and then try to service the laptop with the same serial number, but this time in-warranty -- that'd be a bit odd.
-
Does anyone know of a way to make the screen brighter on the g1s, by removing asus splendid?
-
I dont use Spendid on my G1S (now G1Sn after mobo switch).
I used my wife's VAIO as the standard when adjusting the color settings on the nvidia display properties.
Brightness 55%
Digital Vibrance 50%
Contrast 50%
Image Sharpening None
Gamma 15% (this gets rid of the washout look).
You can always adjust digital vibrance and gamma to your liking.
That said, the screen on the G1S at full brightness is not even close to N10J with its backlight LED at 50% brightness. -
Hey guys, My G1s has been reliable as hell until about the last month. I've done two reformats trying to makesure its not a software issue but heres the problem. My G1s has crashed randomly about 2 dozen times now. I could be gaming, streaming tv, or just surfing these forums and all of a sudden I won't be able to do anything, then the screen will go slightly darker like its locked up, then it will just shutdown. Windows won't say anything about unexpected errors or anything either. I have NO IDEAS whats causing this. Im a total hardware newb so please guys can you walk me through some hardware testing resources or how to clean this puppy?
-
It's difficult to say, at least for me.
You could run some standard tests, like:
- RAM with memtest86+
- HDD, see my Tips and Trick question "Has my HDD gone bad".
Honestly though these lockups don't look to be caused by either HDD or RAM. More often than not it's the motherboard going bad.
However, since the GPU is the weak point in the G1S, it is actually in this case more likely to be the issue. You could monitor its temperature to make sure it's not GPU overheating that's causing the problems. Also, you could run a stress test on the GPU to see if you can get the notebook to crash; if it does you can conclude that the crashes are correlated with GPU load, and infer from that the GPU is likely to be the cause.
To isolate the notebook from Windows problems you could try running for a while in a Live Linux distro, like Knoppix. -
My G1s internal speakers stopped working. Sound is good with headphones and external speakers but I get nothing from internal speakers. I occasionally need to used them. Does any one have any suggestions?
-
Hey
Does anyone know if it's possible to install asus express gate (splashtop) in a G1s ? -
First, you could try reinstalling the audio driver to eliminate a driver problem. Do you hear the ASUS sound during POST (bootup) if you enable it in the BIOS? If not, then it's probably a hardware problem.
Next, if you feel up to it, use the disassembly guide (see the Info Booth for the link) to open it up and check if some speaker cable is not disconnected or nearly so.
If you are still under warranty, make sure you remove no heatsinks in the process, as that voids any warranty you have left.
I don't know but why not use another linux live distro such as SLAX? You could put that on a USB key or maybe even an SD card (I'm not sure if SD card can be booted from on that computer, though). -
SLAX is great but I wanted express gate because it can boot in 5 secs...
-
Don't trust SSD's so... -
Nils,
What did you do about the 1 inch space left over after replacing it w/that HD? I just got the exact same one and when I took out the stock one, it had the rubber piece attached to it to keep it in place. -
comper ; that rubberwedge you are reffering to is attached to a frame that is fastended to a frame, the frame is fastened to the HDD by small screws...
So I just moved that frame from the "original" HDD.
At least that's how it was here
I see that someone claim that HDD temperatures will get higher with the HDD compartment lid off, I find that strange.. I never tried to run the computer without the lid, but as shown on he picture there is not much left of the lid after my mod. Temperatures dropped here - not much - at the best maybe two degrees C lower temperature.
Here where I am now we have controlled temperature, it's always the same temperature wheter it is summer or winter.
FYI: http://www.ntfs.com/disk-monitor.htm thx
-
Wow, that just made me feel so stupid. I ripped off both the rubber parts and stuck 'em on the new HD and wondered why they weren't snug! haha. Anyways, I got the case on the new one now, luckily the strip was still sticky and the small piece is snug even w/out being taped on, so I'm good to go. Thanks man, I might have never figured that one out! =D
-
Ha, just got my 320 Scorpio Black in the mail, can't open it til Christmas, though. Glad I'm not the only one using it. Was seriously torn between it and a Seagate.
-
Jeez, what type of temps are you getting, Nils? Mine gets to 62c sometimes while playing games/defragmenting. Oh well, the G1S just likes to burn all of it's other components to death as well so I guess it's no surprise.
-
is g1s compatible whith p8400 processor?
it´s better than the t7500?
sory for my english...(I´m portuguese) -
I think it is compatible (someone else comfirm pls), but why would you do that?
The difference in speed won't be big, but the P8400 will give you some more batterylife, and will be cooler.
But mind! Changing the processor will void warranty, and is (as for me) too expensive... -
i don´t have warranty for my g1s and i have a big deal, one p8400 in box by 60....
-
Same roomtemperature, same test (ATTO Disk Benchmark)
Maximum temperature before mod; ~63°C
Maximum temperature after mod; ~59°
Whitepaper from WD regarding WD Scorpio® Black ( http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=477)
Temperature
Operating temperature -0° C to 60° C (32° F to 140° F)
Non-operating temperature -40° C to 70° C (-40° F to 158° F)
Guess your temperatures are over the limit according to WD, but I wouldn't panic if I were you over ~62°
I will probably keep this laptop a for a long time to come since I only use it in my 2 weeks workperiod - and after workhours - 12 hour shifts. (4weeks off between workperiods).
So I actually use it very little, but I really hate slow computers ; not that G1S is slow compared to other laptops. But my next "logical"
step is probably to pop in a T9600
PS; it helps a LOT for HDD temperatures to extend the rear tablestandoff's - easily a couple of degrees centigrades lower temperatures.
A laptop cooler is of course the better - and more noisy - alternative.... -
I believe the P8xxx series fit the G1S, but i cant guarantee you, there was talk about it like 6 months ago and i think the conclusion was that it would fit. I thought about to do the same, but its to expensive compared to what you gain.
my HDD temp right now -35 celcius, no lid on and notebook cooler.
oh and merry christmas all of yer. -
hey guys i went to the asus estore and was trying to figure out which was the cover for the gpu. i want to try the drilling a hole technique to see if its helps in cooling my g1s! wud someone kindly link it to me or maybe the part number so i can buy it. thanks
btw anyone know if they sell those rubber things at the bottom of the laptop?
-
Dude, I think the cover for the GPU is the entire case...
-
i also would know this!
i hope that anyone can help!
-
hidavi is right, the GPU has no changeable cover. It's the whole laptop, you have to take it apart.
-
ok this is weird, but my cd rom stopped working today, some driver issues aparently. Would any of you know something about it?
Or pref which driver it is i should be searching for? -
I fixed it! silly win 7 beta stupid thingy...
-
Can someone help me?
My G1S died, so I sent it to the service centre. I just got it back and now it works fine apart for 1 HUGE problem. When I gave my laptop to them, it was still running on the 8600gt (which burnt - that's why it was sent for service). When I got it back just now, the guy said that they had to upgrade my laptop motherboard to the one which uses the 9500/9600. However, it seems to not use the new graphics, like it said that its using the standard VGA. Now, my rating is down all the way to 1.0 and i cant play any games. Can someone guide me on what to do or should i go back to the service centre? -
try to re-install the driver of GPU
-
i dont think that there's a driver cause it says in the device manager that its Standard VGA Graphics Adaptor.
-
would "downgrading" to xp now still be a wise move?
-
Yes, so install a driver.
It currently has none and is running on the basic windows generic drivers which just gives a picture but doesn't use any of the card's cababilities.
Try www.laptopvideo2go.com -
it works now. thanks.
-
Hey guys, new to these forums.
I have a stock as rock G1S-B2 notebook, with 3gigs of ram and the 160gig 5400rpm harddrive. Im looking to upgrade hard drive and was wondering if all SATAII hard drives 2.5" will fit in to the original space?
Thanks -
shud fit
-
Hey guys. Just a little tip:
A great way to knock degrees Celsius off of your hdd, cpu and GPU is to use a laptop cooler that blows IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION of the CPU fan.
That's right, but instead of putting the fan placed under the CPU fan, place the fan(s) under the hard drive and RAM. It knocked 5c off of my hdd, 5c off my gpu temps and 2c off of the CPU.
Enjoy
-
No. This laptop runs much better with Vista x64 than it does with XP x86 or x64. The drivers are better for Vista x64.
Of course, the absolute best option is Windows 7 x64. Just use all the Vista x64 drivers. Its a much lighter OS and will boost your 3DMark06 score by a few hundred points.
