has anyone experienced anything good with switching to win XP x64? then the based OS that came with the laptop once bought?
also on a side note... does anyone know any good sleeves that fits perfectly with the G1? I bought the Incase 17" sleeve case which was suppose to fit the 17" macbook pro..
the G1 height fits perfectly into the sleeve but the width has a lot of free space. I wish ASUS made a special sleeve case instead of the green backpack which in my opinion.. dislike :\ no offense to those who likes the backpack. -
Wouldn't Vista 64 be a better idea than WinXP 64?

Hey ya, i got my self the Zalman Notebook Cooler NC2000.
Well its looking sweet and my laptop runs 40c idle temp.
If i turn the notebook cooler on max throttle, it wont even spin up the built in cooler when i play COD4 with overclock to 580 / 820. - i runs at 68c MAX LOAD OVERCLOCKED!!
Even the hard drive is so cool now its comfortable to touch it. - it used to be so steaming hot i couldn't touch it, which means now i probably prolonged the life time of the HDD with 2 years ...
So if you love your G1S and overclocking it, open up the lid over the HDD, Memory and CPU/graphic - then place your laptop on the NC2000, it is so fookin worth the money! -
Huge updated section 1 with new benchmarks with and without overclock with the 167.45 and 175.63 drivers!
Read it to find out how to gain another 300 points in 3dmark06 and get 4948 points in 1280*1024.
Astonishing 6149 points in 1024*768.
stable clocks at 580/820 and cpu at 2365mhz! -
You might want to reduce those heading font sizes in the 1st post on the thread, I'm using 120% DPI in 1400 res and 110% zoom in Moz Firefox and they are absolutely huge and make the post difficult to read.
-
Do you have the URL for the new benchmarks?
Thanks! -
I think they are in the 1st post on the thread? It was last edited today.
-
yes its all on the front page. Btw ive also replaced the GPU cooling paste now - - il post some temps tomorrow when i got more time testing it. I can already say, the temperature will be lower! The paste, sry the PAD is more correct that was there earlier really really stinked, it was more like a spunge of some sort then a cooling paste!
-
sry, my bad that one. I changed the size. Im running 1680 * 1050 and it was huge for me to xD
idle temp gpu atm around 54-56.
idle cpu is now 41/40 which is another 4c lower then before i replaced the paste on the GPU. This is logical as both GPU and CPU shares the same cooling, by making the GPU cooler you also help cooling the CPU.
Note btw that all the lids under my notebook is open, HDD, memory + the CPU / FAN cooler.
Note also that i have the Zalman NC2000 to cool down my notebook.
stable idle temp after 30 minutes on surfing the web, gpu 55, cpu 41/40 -
A question: usually thermal pads are added because there is a vertical gap between the heatsink and the die that needs to be cooled. Can you fill in that gap effectively with thermal paste?
And a remark, with all the doors off and stuck on top of the notebook cooler, the G1S is really just a desktop replacement machine... you can't really move it
(well you can but then you have to live with the higher temps)
-
The pad isn't more then 1mm thick so its doable. I admit the paste does get thicker then what is optimal, but i still find that it cools just as good or better.
Hehe, with some training you dont use more then 2 minutes putting the lids back on so i still consider it a portable pc
-
Updated section 1 + 10, thermal monitor, stuttering issue has been proven above 95c with the newest 175.63 drivers at section 10 and some that where posted in section1 has been moved to section 10 OC as this is where it really belongs and makes reading the post easier.
Here is 4 images of the stuttering test.
1. AVG frames increase.
2. AVG frames starts to decrease at 96c.
3. AVG frames continue to decrease, but the temp is finally stable 96c.
4. AVG frames test reset to show the true AVG frame when its throttled down.
Conclusion:
Stuttering occurs at approximately 95c. It lowered performance from 344 fps to 269 fps which is a 27% decrease in performance.
A new scary fact has been discovered, while running ATItool 3dwiev my GPU reached 104c without the cooling fan going on max. I had it at that temp for 2 full minutes without any reaction form the cooler. Then i started a COD4 and watched the CPU temp rise as the game was running. At about 70-75c the full potential of the cooling fan kicked in. It sounds like a small hurricane now. The scary thing is that it allowed the GPU to reach 104c without really caring to much about it. At the time the CPU was running at 58c, when the cpu increased in temp the built in fan responded.
What im trying to say is that the cooling fan definitively reacts to the CPU temp compared to the GPU. Also we can conclude that any OC you get stable, but reaches temps above 95c is useless as the GPU throttles down and what was gained is lost again. -
yeah I noticed that fan issue too and because of that I'm desperately looking for a way to get control over the fan. I'm using a custom made cooler, so my temps are usually 10-15°C cooler than before, but for example in 3dmark the fan doesn't even turn on during the first 2 tests - it usually begins to work when CPU test starts, so I'm getting of course much higher GPU temps during the first two tests, just because of that.
The only software that is capable of reading the fan speed is Asus' NB Probe - would it be somehow possible to "combine" that with a programm like I8KfanGUI to get control over the fan?? A programmer would be needed here... -
Yeah, this is a known problem with the G1 and probably a large part of the cause for which this notebook gets so hot. The heat needs to propagate from the GPU via heatsink to the CPU before the fan starts to cool down the entire ensemble.
-
lol i got one solution, overclock the CPU and never let it "cool down". Keep it peaked
To Asus defense it should be mentioned that the usage of both CPU + GPU is normal so that the CPU would heat up and start up the cooling fan. I guess this is mostly a problem if you are doing work that uses only the GPU.
Now i wish computer manufacturers in general would provide a manual on how to control the computer in all ways... - of course it would void warranty, but still.. -
I disagree, many games don't push the CPU to full blast but will push the GPU. So this is a bit of bad engineering on their side... especially given the G1 is a designated gaming machine.
-
Can anyone recommend me some better cooling for this laptop? Im getting sick of the heat, anything will be ok!
Thanks -
Zalman Notebook NC 2000 cooler.
Replace cooling paste on CPU. -
Won't we lose warranty for drilling a hole on it ?
-
I dont know to be honest, there is no label saying "warranty void if drilled"
You will have to read the warranty and what it covers to find that out.
Remember if you dont want to drill you can always just remove the lid completely when its stationary.
btw you loose warranty when replacing cooling paste etc, there is a little sticker on one of the screws saying "warranty void if broken", if you remove it carefully it wont break, i did so. -
Yeh i had that black tape removed long time ago. I believe the idea of having the tape there is so that the heat wont escape into your lap when you use it as a LAPtop. - but since i don't, i don't mind the heat from escaping down.
Nice score on that test. Made me want to try out the clocking on the shaders again.
For Core/Mem, a nice stable one is the 580/820 you got there, it does go higher tho. Adolfotregosa scored astonishing 5278 points with 600/848 back with the 155.xx drivers i think it was. So i got to say that score you have there is the best one ive seen with stable clockings. -
Not really that much actually considering it's only 1280x 854
Best stable with CPU overclocked is 520/1250/888Mhz for me...5600 at 1280x 1024
I've scored higher with 5648 points and 1285MHz Shader clock, however this wasn't really stable.
With 520/1250/888Mhz I can play for hours without any problems
-
U get ur points on cpu performance ... gpu performance is equal .
with the shaders on 1250 I'v played assassines creed for 3/4 hours with no problem
max resolution of mine is 1440 x 900
-
Indeed, it would explain his score.
You got some nice CPU score on that one, 2.706 ghz, what is it originally? I got the 2.2, i clock it to 2.365 and score the same as the 2.4 does on 3dmark. Some 2075 points. You got another 400 points there. So i got to ask which CPU you have? the T7700 ?
all my tests is 1280*1024 -
yes it's the T7700 -> 2,4 GHz...
2,7Ghz is however the highest clock I can go with OCed GPU, maybe it's a chipset issue. With only cpu stress test running I can easily clock it to 2,85Ghz but then I can't run anything that needs GPU power anymore.
Would really like to try if higher GPU voltages help in this case, however I don't want to be the first one doing it and then frying my GPU
-
taking 2.7 out of a 2.4 is decent. I cant take more then 2.4 out of my 2.2, it gets unstable and wont work 100% for more then tops 10 min.
-
hi , guys I didn't drill the tape, but u know there is a silver paste on it, I just removed it, I don't know but it seems keeping the tape hot, and I can't see the reason for this silver paste anyway!! the hot issue is been improving but slightly!!
-
You talking about the copper paddings in the lid that covers the CPU + Cooler? I believe the idea asus had was to insulate the laptop so that heat would not escape down into your crotch. Especially when it comes to the black tape they put on covering all the holes.
-
I am sorry, but I have a question, is it dangerous to remove it, because I did!!
thx in advance -
No that should be safe.
-
thank u so much , I was worried, cos I just bought it
thx again -
While I don't think that removing the foil is going to be damaging, it may hurt performance. I believe the foil/covered vents are there to actually keep some of the heat contained around the CPU area(in addition to keeping it off your bean bag). The reason for this I think is because the fan attatched to the GPU's heatsink/pipe/spreader is controlled by the teperature sensor of the CPU. You almost WANT the CPU to get hotter so it switches the fan to higher RPM's to try and keep the hotter GPU cooled. The result will be a noisier laptop while gaming, but maybe a cooler/stable GPU. When it comes to stuttering, it literally could be the difference of 1 degree for some people.
-
That is good thinking, but tbh i like it better with vent holes and everything because the cooling fan sucks so much on this laptop that it cant handle the job anyway. You definitively have a point tho.
-
Yay, i got Age Of Conan and the G1S kicks its ass ... - then crashes
I play the game and completely randomly i will get a major "stutter" period, the screen goes black for about 5 seconds then im back in the game. The FPS has however dropped from avg 30 fps to avg 10 fps!
I've been running RivaTuner to see what happens and it gave me the answer i needed. The performance mode goes from "3D Perfect" to "3D low power" mode. This results in the CORE/SHADER/MEMORY clock to drop from 475/950/700 to 297/500/300! So i know what happens, i just don't know why? GPU temp around 80-85c, CPU 70c, HDD 40c (so nothing bad there).
Now if it was so simple that i could just ALT+TAB and turn it back up to 3Dperf i wouldn't whine, because nobody likes whiners. However i have to reboot my laptop every single time it happens. Now that takes time and i have to wait in line to get onto my beloved FURY server. I can't force it back up, i can't overclock it back up and it doesn't help me to run a game like COD4 to enable the 3Dperf again.
Its like as if it just stops recognizing any game as a "3Dperf" mode game. I'm on a Asus G1S and i've had this notebook since july 2007 and this sort of thing has never happened to me before..
~System specs~

Reinstalled drivers, same problem, reset to default and everything..
here is an image from riva tuner when the "bug" appears for me, currently OC'd, but its the same deal when its on factory clocks:
I tried posting on AoC forums, but haven't got any good replies so far, so i was curious if anyone else with the G1S is experiencing the same problem? -
Really strange issue, I've never seen that one before, so I can't help you.
However, your GPU temps are incredible ! Not more than 86°c overclocked, I'd pay for that !! Lucky you.. -
ClearSkies Well no, I'm still here..
Wasn't there something around here a while ago that talked about the 8600GT VBIOS or something automatically downclocking if the gpu parameters hit a certain point? What you're seeing is certainly consistent with that, and was the G1 stutter thread talking about this phenomenon appearing after the chip got xx hot?
If I'm remembering all the above correctly (and it's entirely possible that I'm not
), what you'd be running into is a hard-wired protection mechanism in the chip designed to prevent catastrophic failure, which would also explain the requirement for a reboot to reset the gpu. The protect algorithm would be exposed because the gpu is being pushed over that limit by the overclocking....
-
Which i also thought might be the reason why, so i ran the game without any overclock, but the same thing happened! At a complete random moment it would just drop to "3dlowpower" mode. Also the stuttering issue only appears at over 95c, i still have 10c to go before i reach that temp. Also when the GPU throttles down at over 95c it will throttle back up when it reaches safer levels, it doesn't do that to me now
So i don't think its the temperatures doing it and i doubt it is the OC because it happened on factory clocks to :s I've also had these clocks for months now without any problems in any games!
I've currently reverted to 167.43 drivers, this because if i remember correctly it was "the driver" a time back, specially for Crysis. Also i wanted to see if i got the same bug with a different driver. So far i've played AoC 4 hours without the bug, my GPU has however been a lot warmer then with the 175.16 drivers, i don't think thats because of the driver, more likely because we had some insane hot weather today
Oh and check out the front page of this post, scroll down to the heat+stuttering issue. It shows when it kicks in. -
Yeh i've done a lot to get that temp, thats MAX load on the GPU with a "heavy" OC that i think i scored 5076 in 3dmark06 with (1000 pts over factory).
I have a zalman notebook cooler NC2000 and ive opened up all panels under the notebook to maximize cooling, i've also replaced the cooling paste on the GPU and CPU. So no warranty for me no more !!
-
Oh ok, I get it now. I'll wait next year for the end of the warranty before doing that
-
I have the G1S and Age of Conan, but it certainly isn't kicking ass. I'm playing on the lowest graphics setting at native resolution and I get get only about 8fps in the town area... it's more choppy when others are around me. I haven't over-clocked anything on it yet... I guess I'll try that.
What's the "3D-Perfect" mode you mention? Is that just a power mode setting or is it a special utility u have?
thanks,
Mike -
3D-Lowpower is a power saving mode your graphic card has.
I play the game in 1440*900 with "low" settings, tho i have modded it to my liking. View range 600m, high resolution 35%. I also use Shader V 2.0. I Know 3.0 is fancier, but i gained 10-15 fps by going 2.0. Also there is an option where you can change how much system memory to use for textures, set it to maximum. And i increased NPC view range to 200m. The Shader 2.0 is what will gain you the most fps. I peak at 50-60 and get as low as 15-20 with this setting. I normally have 29-42 which is neat. I run this OC with RivaTuner : Core around 550, Shader 1300+, Memory 800+.
OC gives me around 8-12 fps more i think.
Ive tried to play the game on 1680*1050, but it runs much better on 1440*900.
Oh and about the clockings going down while i play: I have found a temp solution, reverting to the 167.43 drivers! - not have a single time today where its clocked down! I only tried the 167.43 and 175.16 so idk about all the other drivers, but il be changing back to 175 now and see if maybe it works better this time. Computers are random things
-
@Irathi: Have you tried 175.80? They seem to be really good for me. Also, I don't use the modded inf on that one, I use the original inf found in the original inf's folder (actually, I've been using the originals whenever they're available). I haven't played that game with these drivers though.

deleted - nvm .... SPAM SPAM

Thanks Irathi. I spotted this thread called "FPS Fix" on the official AOC forums:
http://forums-us.ageofconan.com/showthread.php?t=36047
As strange as it sounds, it says to set your graphics setting to High, then turn shadows and water reflection off, set shader to 2.0, and adjust your distances a bit to improve FPS. At first I was skeptical, but I saw someone post that it worked great for the 8600m GT, so I gave it a shot and it worked well for me.
My resolution isn't set to 1650x1050, but then next one down that's still widescreen, 1600x1024 or something like that and I'm avg around 24 - 42 fps depending on location. Perhaps it's just the shader 2.0 setting that giving the improvement, not sure.
Does it looked streched out at 1440x900? -
no it looks very nice on 1440*900, its a widescreen resolution to, its the default one for the G1S that has the "worse" screen. They come in 2 mods 15" 1440*900 and 1680*1050. But both is 15" so 1440*900 looks good.
Shader 2.0 alone gives me 10-20 fps average so it does a whole lot for you. I do however not really see the point in "high" settings if you use the shader 2.0.. - il try it out tomorrow tho
-
yeah, I'm not sure that shader 2.0 setting is actually staying at 2.0... because when I re-open the video settings it's back at 3.0.
-
It does go back sometimes, but you can change it while in-game so just keep on hitting it until it sticks.
-
what's the best bios to run on the g1s? I'm using 202 atm. I've heard of issues of new versions down clocking cpu...thanks.
